Hi folks,

Anyone gone private for an early scan? you can't get an early reassurance scan in my area but there is a company - healthcarenow ltd in Edinburgh - that offer early scans from 7-11 weeks for £55.

Anyone been for something similar or know of another route?

I am also having HcG levels done next week but I would like the reassurance of an early scan since I m/c at 8.5 weeks (discovered at 11wks) last time.

shame on the heartburn for you - do you sit and read or how do you spend the time on your own?

shame your mum in in inverness - will she be able to make it over around the time of the birth? all my folks live in ireland and i miss them dearly but talk to at least one of them every day. i know they will all be over the moon. my mum was a teen mother and i think she would be a gran before now!

i really dont know anything about the kind of care / support that i will be offered through teh princess royal - it all is a bit up in teh air. vio on this thread may be in at the same time as me so it iwll be good to have another perosn around.
have you been to antenatal classes? we have decided that we are going to pay for hypnobirthing classes. that makes me sound like a hippy but as i am so frightened of the labour - i will try anything!

Vio · 18/09/2006 11:07

hi !

my sister and a friend will come and visit me from Hong Kong! v.excited about it. They are arriving this Sat. she just told me on the phone so i am v.happy. its always good to have family support. i cannot wait.

geordiemacminx · 18/09/2006 11:51

Hey Vio;

Good news about your sister coming to stay, I bet you will all have a lovely time.. I think retail therapy will be just what you all need!!!

Vio · 18/09/2006 15:46

hi everyone,
how are you feeling today? i am feeling much better now. i think my morning sickness has eased off a bit...am able to eat properly now. Went down to Manchester this weekend and went out for a meal....i could actually keep the food down and was able to eat so feeling much happier now..)

Hope everyone is well...!!! can't wait till I get my first scan cos really want to make sure everyone is fine.

liath · 18/09/2006 15:56

Ooh, is this the tartan antenatal thread now? Glad you're feeling less sick, Vio - it makes life so much more pleasant.

I'm not sure if I'm bona fide Scottish either - I was born here but both my parents are English. DH is from London.

I've decided to go for a private 20 week scan but not bother with the nuchal one.

Vio · 18/09/2006 16:01

hi liath,
how many weeks are you now then? I am 10 weeks now ..haven't had my first scan yet so i dont know how many scans i will get...if i would get only 1 scan...then like u i will go private when i get to 20weeks.

where would u go for the private one then?

liath · 18/09/2006 16:07

Snap, 10 weeks here too . Due around 12th April. I've got my scan date through & will be nearly 14 weeks then I think. Like you, I really want to see the baby and make it all seem a bit more real.

I'll go to Healthcare now in Stafford St in Edinburgh for the 20 week scan - I went there when I was pg with dd and they were good.

weeonion · 18/09/2006 21:03

hey vio - good to see you back - i was wondering where you had gone. great news on your visitors - its always lovely to have folks over! does she know about your pg? have you decided where you will go / what you will do? there is loads to do around glasgow.

we will have dp family up at the weekend - our news is still secret so it should be interesting!!

geordiemacminx - read about your weekend on the other thread - sounds a lovely night!!

i think the standard is one scan only in scotland. i have booked in private for my nuchal scan at healthcare now, will get the 16week one with my hospital and then we are paying again for the 20 weeks.

how long have we all been in scotland and liath - how long has yr dh been up here??

weeonion · 18/09/2006 21:37

chubski - we both work. panicking a bit on how we will manage in terms of money and childcare. i leave our flat at 5.30a.m and home after 7pm. long days. the plan is i will take the minimum of mleave and get back asap. dp will then stay at home part time and i will work at home 2 days / week. we have no family here and all our pals have yet to move towards parenthood so babysitters may be thin on ground. ah well
good to hear you have plenty of offers around. do you get lonely when dp is on nights? r u from lewis or did you move over?

geordiemacminx · 19/09/2006 09:14

Morning girls;

It does seem to be turning into a bit of a tartan army here although liath feel free to join us as I think... weeonion is irish, vio is from Hong Kong and I'm from newcastle.. so we are all pretty much in the same boat of not having many friends/family up here!! (apolgies if I got that wrong btw...didnt mean to offend anyone)

Apologies for bailing out on you yesterday... started throwing up so was sent home .

Weeonion - the railway club is in Hamilton, its like an old working mens club only worse.... definately off the list of possible venues for a christening!!!

Everyone heard about the storms that we gonna get on the west coast on wed/thurs... gail force winds and upto 60mm of rain... although knowing the weather forecasters it'll probably be 28 deg with a flurry of snow!!

kittyb · 19/09/2006 09:49

At the Queen Mum's in Glasgow there is an early pregnancy unit, and my GP referred me there straight away for two pregnancies. First time there was a "reason" in that had had a bleed, second time it was just for reassurance.

Also midwives told me I didnt have to go through my GP, I could phone them direct and refer myself.

Crazy that there are such inconsistencies in care.

Vio · 19/09/2006 12:53

Hey, how are you girls? I am feeling fine today. About scans, the first scan we will be offered is called dating scan right? so then i suppose it is likely that we will get this one only.

Nuchal scan ( I suppose its to look at a pad of skin at the back on the baby's neck) to help assess the risk of Down's syndrome. My question is that if we don't get that, how would we find out whether or not we are at high or low risk?

The 20weeks scan -to check for spina bifida & other possible abnormalities.( so if we don't get that) we have to go private? does anyone know how much they are?

Yes, weeonion, my sis knows i am pregnant and shes v.happy. My older sister who lives in Canada had an ectopic pregnancy about 2 months ago so everyone in my family worries alot about me. Fortunately, i am feeling okay and seem to have no problem. My older sister is a very nice, shes v.happy for me...I do honestly hope she will convince again soon cos i think she will make a very good mother.

chubszuki · 19/09/2006 13:19

hi everyone,
weeonion i was born in inverness came here 5yrs ago with dp, quite like it here, very different to living on mainland no shops, bad weather as geordi says its very windy and wet here already yuck. what a long day you have!! that wont get easyer as u get bigger im sure all will be fine withe money and childcare, i was worried being self employed about mat pay but thankfully it all worked ot fine. are you telling dps parents at wknd?
hi vio here at 15 weeks you get offerd a blood test for downs etc (will check notes see what else) as well as scan. baby bond in glasgow do private scans think it was about 90pounds for an abnormality scan same as hosp and 195pounds for a 4d scan with pics and dvd!! they have website jus google babybond. hope you are all well not to sick or suffering with heart burn!!! im off to my first a/n app, eeek.

weeonion · 19/09/2006 17:39

chubski - hope the appt went ok.

vio - it is all a bit confused but i think as are both at the princess royal and due around the same time - we wont get a scan til around 16 weeks. this is a booking scan and will not be a screening / diagnostic scan. they will do bloods for tests then - down syndrome included. if you want this nuchal scan - you will have to pay. i am going to healthcare now in edinburgh for this. it costs around £190 and it has to be done between 11 - 13.5 weeks. if we want an anomoly scan done around 18-20 weeks - again we have to pay. this costs around £150.

bit poo that we have to fork out hard earned cash when these are offered for free as part of a package of care. i got really peeved about this the other night and emailed my msp (not at all like me!) he has got back and has contacted the chief exec of glasgow health board asking for info. i also sent an email to a friend who works in the equality unit in the scottish exec. she is vry interested and i have to keep here posted as to what is happening withme. if you are happy for me to tell her your expereinces and views - please let me know.

sorry for teh rant. i am really not a political animal but this has really hacked me off.

anyhow - onto other things - the weather!! what wa liek today and geordie - what is this about wed / thurs??????????? wish i could throw a sickie and have a day in front of the telly with 80's girly movies.............

Vio · 20/09/2006 12:55

hi everyone. feeling a bit sick again today..(

Anyway, weeonion, are you doing both scan private? i mean the nuchal scan and 20weeks anomoly scan & if the blood test we will offered will tell us the risk of Down's syd..is it ness to do the nuchal scan then? I am not sure what to do now cos i still haven't received the letter from the hospital...i assume, like you, i will probably get it at around 16 weeks.

I plan to decide what to do next after i have visited the hospital...( you know, whether or not to go private for the 20weeks one..i think if it is confirmed that i will only get the dating scan only, i will definitely pay for anomoly scan & have it done private.

So, why do you have to go to Edinburgh? can you do it in Glasgow? i wonder if i want to get a 20weeks scan ...( private)..do i have to book now?
Becos my husband thinks i am too nervous..he reckons we should wait till i have my first scan and appointment with the hospital first then see what they say and see how i feel and decide later whether or not we want to get one private.

I talked to one of his friends wife who have just given birth in Manchester..since she had 2 m/c before she seemed to have recieved v.good antenatal care and she assured that theres nothing to worry about and no need to think about going private..you know..i just don't know is the right thing to do.

geordiemacminx · 20/09/2006 13:55

Hey you lot.

God this scan thing is getting realy confusing... really not sure what I am going to do, or indeed what I will get offered.. havent got an appointment with the midwife until the 18th Oct... I really cant believe that you dont get offered any of the semmingly "routine" tests that are necessary to determine the health of your unborn child. Well thats my rant over.

The only thing I do know is that if you want to go private vio there is usually no rush - the wonders of private healthcare usually mean that you can get an appointment almost straight away...

Sleeeeeeepy.....

weeonion · 20/09/2006 17:20

hey gals - wet day up here!!
i booked my scan with healthcare now in edinburgh as i have heard good reports about them but they are really booking up fast for early october. i guess i have turned into a worrier while i am pg - not like me and like you gmm - i have been ranting about this.
i wanted a nuchal scan as i want to know as early as possible if there is something wrong to make decisions. my doc is not sure what i will be offered at 16 weeks - whether there is any screeningelement to taht scan at all. i am not inspired by what i have heard so far about antenatal care in glasgow so whilst i cant eally afford it - we have decided not to have xmas pressies for each other this year and pay for scans. i really do not want to take any chances and given that i have only seen my doc once, no word from hospital and no contact with a MW - i want to get sense of control back. one way of doing this for me is to go ahead and book private!!
that is my rant over for today...........
anything nice planned for the weekend - are we all going to pamper??
oh vio - when is yr sis here??

geordiemacminx · 21/09/2006 09:02

Morning ladies!!!

Good news about your scan weeonion. I have another one next thursday - will be 9+2 then I think, and a mw appointment when i'm 12 weeks. It would be really helpful to find out exactly what I will be getting and what I wont so that we could start and make plans for private scans if necessary. Do we know when the nuchal scan has to be done?

Weather doesnt seem to be that bad today - they never seem to get it right!!!

Pleased its thursday, really bored with this week!!!

weeonion · 21/09/2006 09:11

hey folks - doign a sneaky post in work. the su nis shinig outside but there is a strange glint in teh skies. ni signs of gales either in glsgow or eburgh!

with the nuchal scan - it has to be done between 11 weeks and 13 weeks 5 days. it is a pretty short time span for it. i am paying £190 but feel better as it is the first time i will have actually had anything that feels like it relates to me being pg!

hope you all have a good day
xo

Vio · 21/09/2006 13:19

hi everyone,
how are you? i am feeling a bit sick again today..not good...

Anyway, -weeonion- I still haven't received anything from the hospital yet. ( are we 10 weeks now or 9 weeks? ) i get a bit confused sometimes. Last time i saw my doc on 4th Sep..she said to me that you are 7 weeks now due date is 22 Apr 07.

Geordie, you get a scan and a appointment that early...is that becos you had a m/c before?

weeoion- i suppose -as we appear to be healthy and no history of m/c we just need to wait ? ...but I do feel the same stimes...you know, like there is nothing has been done so far.....the baby is growing inside me but i just don't know whats happening...oh well...nevermind..just hv to wait for another two or three weeks or more.

Could you two let me know how you are getting on...say after you have your scan done? i would like to know what to expect you see.
Thanks v.much in advance..
