Private ultrasound scans - Scotland

Hi folks,

Anyone gone private for an early scan? you can't get an early reassurance scan in my area but there is a company - healthcarenow ltd in Edinburgh - that offer early scans from 7-11 weeks for £55.

Anyone been for something similar or know of another route?

I am also having HcG levels done next week but I would like the reassurance of an early scan since I m/c at 8.5 weeks (discovered at 11wks) last time.

I dont think you are entitled to any extra scans until you have had a few m/c's but the doctor told me I could ring the early pregnancy unit and ask if they would scan me at 7 weeks. Because I was already registered with them as as I had been there for m/c they said it wasnt a problem. They also said for me to make an appointment for 2 weeks time. I think its more dependant on your area than history.. the scan was lovely cos you could see the heart beating but apart from that there wasnt much else to be seen... a little bean shape? Still I have it as the wallpaper on my fone which makes me smile.

Vio..if I was you I would chase up your appointment.. but thats just me..very impaitent!

Vio · 21/09/2006 14:16

HI geordie, i have called my GP about a week ago...she said...dont worry...just wait for another 3 weeks ...you should get one at around 12 weeks. thats what she said.

Had you have a nuchal scan? will you get one private if you dont get it from NHS?

My plan is that i will not book any private scan yet till i have my first appointment with the hospital...then i will find out what i will get and what i wont get and i will then decide next. ( thats what my husband thinks too)

I am impatient too but i just feel that theres not much i can do..i have chased them and they have told me to wait..you know.

I guess we are all very nervous first time mum and just eagar to find out everyone is going well..just need that assurance i suppose...

You want a girl or a boy then?

geordiemacminx · 21/09/2006 14:27

Ah had forgotton that they had told you to wait 3 weeks.. last time I got my m/w appointment the day after I cam out of hospital after m/c.... was great timing!!!

Not sure about the scans thing..with only be 24 I guess my chances of downs are slim... but I'm not sure, like you am going to wait until after I have spoken to hospital/midwife. I'm sure that if it was necessary then we would get it..

Definatley going to have the 4d scan at 27 weeks or whatever it is.. as I think they are amazing, plus I would like to find out the babys sex.. secretly I would love a little girl but, I know it sounds like a cliche I would be happy with either as long as its healthy.. what about you?

got my first pair of maternity jeans today.. they were a realy bargin off ebay- £8 including p&p.. they are brand new m&s!!!

So much for the storms up here btw... I can see for miles out of my office window!!!

Vio · 21/09/2006 17:17

Hiya,

you only 24 this yr? i am 32..blush...much older than you then.

I would like a boy but i am convinced that i am having a gal..i dont know why...sad...the truth is like all mum-to-be...as long as my baby is healthy....it really doesnt matter whether its a boy or a gal.

I bought a maternity M&S jean about 3 weeks ago in Braehead centre..i can't remember how much it was..but you got a BW M & S maternity jean for only £8 thats really a bargain..maybe i should start searching ebay as well.

My sister is arriving this sunday and will stay for about 6 days...any sugguestion about where to visit in glasgow or edinburgh? i hv only been to edinburgh once ( cos i moved to scotland in May)...any ideas..pls let me know!

weeonion · 21/09/2006 19:38

ahem - i feel like the eldery stateslady on this thread - turned 35 the day b4 teh doc confirmed pg!!

i secretly would like a girl but as you say gmm - a fit healthy baby is the priority. i think i always imagined myself with a wee girl so getting my head round the idea of a boy is taking a bit of work. boys seem to run in my dp's family - there is only nephews and as it is him that decides the sex - looks like it will be a ds for us!

i dont know if either of you go for the cheaper end of the clothes market but i went into primark yesterday and got black linen trousers with a large elasticated waistband for £3. i reckon they will do as work matrnity clothes so bought 4 pairs in different sizes. i have scoured cahrity shops and have a bag hidden under the spare bed ready to come out (guess who was wanting this to happen for a while!!) i cant wait to get into pg clothes tho'. i want to look pg and blooing! for years i have been conscious of my body shape and size having lost a lot of weight when i was younger so - i cant wait to be HUGE with a reason

i feel ok - no ms but just soo tired. i struggle to get through the day. i am ususally rushing around alot with work and now i feel like i trudge. vio - do you work? GMM - i think you are selfemployed - how are you finding it?

vio - places to go in glasgow. how about to princes square for coffee to look at the nice tiles and inerior? you could get the underground to the west end and have a potter round byres rd - some dinky shops and tea places? what about a trp to edinburgh to do the castle, wander round the royal mile and high street. i took my folks on those hop on hop ff tour buses and tehy loved them. if you let me now what you & her like - i will get my thinking cap on!

anyhow - what a ramble --- off to get my dinner. v v hungry... xoxo

weeonion · 21/09/2006 19:43

vio - if you are due on the 22/04 tehn i think you are 9 weeks 5 days (only 2 days behind me!! )
check it out using this site??
www.justformumz.co.uk/pregnancycalculator.html

liath · 21/09/2006 19:46

34 here & will be 35 by the time baby's born so no spring chicken here either! I'm shattered too but only work one day a week now so that makes it easier I think.

We didn't find out the sex first time around but am seriously thinking about it this time!

Vio, Hervey Nicks in Edinburgh is a nice place to go for afternoon tea, and I'd second the open top bus. Have a great time with your sister.

weeonion · 21/09/2006 20:22

liath - how you doing??

vio - you could take her to teh elephant house coffee shop in eb where jk rowling supposedly started to write harry potter. its a bit of a tourist trap now but they do lovely cakes!!!

i do the commute on the bus and i'm finding it hard. i had to ring dp on the way home to meet me as i was gonna pass out whilst on bus. i had struggled across eburgh with a laptop, a projector, a heavy work bag and 2 bags of clothes. what a sweetie - he told the driver he had to come right on the bus to help me off. i think his protective gene is kicking in. he is gutted that he cant get off work to come to the nuchal scan.

liath - have you had yr 1st scan yet??

liath · 21/09/2006 20:32

Ugh, what a nightmare journey! You'll be counting the days to mat leave at this rate!!

Scan 2 weeks today, am getting a bit twitchy and want to see that everything's OK.

weeonion · 21/09/2006 21:20

wow - we both go on the same day - 5th oct? i am going at 10.30am to healthcare now - is yours at the hospital?? what time at? i can sned you physic well wishes from the same city!

geordiemacminx · 22/09/2006 09:03

Vio - let me know what sort fo things you and your sister are into and whether you have a car and I will give you a list of things that you could do.. I have loads of good ideas!!!

Yep, looks like I'm the baby of the thread, although my dp is 43 .

WO, I'm self employed but pimp myself out to telecoms companies, its more like being staff to be honest, just without the perks!!!

Was very poorly sick last night and this morning... just in time for the weekend... OH GOODY!!!

Vio · 22/09/2006 11:01

Hi everyone!

My sister has never been to the UK before so its going to be a big trip for her.

Pls tell me where the elephant house cafe is in Edinburgh? that sounds quite interesting. Also, if we are go to the underground in Glasgow to the West end....which station is it?

I took a friend to the willow ( ithink its called willow tea room) last time when a friend of mine visited...it was okay..when you said princes square for a coffee, where exactly is it? i don't know too much about Glasgow to be honesst

Yes, i do have a car but and a licence...well,...the thing is that i have only started driving it for about 2 weeks....I am not confident enough ..at the moment, i am driving it with my hushand sitting next to me..i don't drive it on my own..but i am getting better so hopefully i will be a good driver one day!

Well, actually, i am not working at the moment...I got married in Feb and thats why i moved from HK to the UK in May.....I thought I will find a job when i feel i can drive my car safely...but then i discovered im pg in Aug then my plan has all changed now...( anyway, its difficult to get a job while you are pg)).

I would go for cheap maternity clothers, definitely, no point spending money buying clothes you would only wear for the next 7 months. where can i find Primark? can you pls tell me?

Thanks v.much!

geordiemacminx · 22/09/2006 11:19

Rightyo before I forget..

Great Western Road/Byres Road.. tube stations are KelvinBrige for GWR or Hillhead for BR... basically there is one at either of end of where you want to be so you get off at one and walk to the other one.. lots of lovely little shops selling bits and pieces, nice coffee shops and such like. Also there is the Kelvingrove Museum not far from here which has just been done out and is free to get in although tends to be busy!

Princess Square is on Buchanen (sp) street just opposite frasers. It is an indoor mall with posh shops and restuarants and such like.. karen millen, hugo boss etc. Very good for people watching. Right in the centre of Glasgow. Not far from museum of modern art which is in Exchange square, just up from PS, not been - if you go you can tell me what its like as I have been meaning to go for ages.

Not far from us all is Glasgow Fort. Its just off the m8 near easter house, has the usual high street shops, starbucks and a mamas and papas... I dare you not to be able to have a wee look in!!

Primark - there is at least one in the city centre - Sauchiehall Street - it really is a revelation in cheapness... its the sort of place you can go in and get lost for hours, come out with 2 bags full of clothes and only spend £30!! There are loads of them across Glasgow, might be one close to you... try www.yell.com to find them? The one in the city centre is close to TKMaxx which is great for cheap designer clothes.

Not so good with Edinburgh but things to do include the dungeons - great, the royal yauht(sp!!) Britannia down at Leith Docks, next to a shopping centre place, the castle, hop on hop off bus tours, trainspotting tour, again down at Leith, the zoo, although not sure what this is like - been 22 years since I been!! Er.. er..Harvey Nicks.. drool over the designer clothes and such like..

Stirling is nice for a day out, old market town, castle, shops etc, not sure how accessible it is for public transport mind you.. also up that way you have the Blair Drummond Safari park which is absolutely fantastic!!

Loch lomond is lovely for a day out too, they have a farmers market on every other sunday selling organic meats and cakes and other home grown stuff... plenty of samples to try.. is it any wonder I cant fit into my jeans.

Right thats your lot for now.. brain and fingers exhausted!!

weeonion · 22/09/2006 11:34

great - nice long posts to respond to !!!

vio - primark has branches in sauchiehall street and a new one on queen st/ argylle st. great for t-shirts (£2-£4).

the elephant house = on george 4th bridge which on the left hand side of the royal mile as you walk up to the castle..
Princess Square is great to watch people- i like to go up to top floor, get a coffee and look down at all the yummymummys with their unruly kids...

museum of modern art has a good sculpture exhibition on at the moment. there is a small coffee shop downstairs in the library which is quite mellow.

there is a festival on in the merchant city area this weekend - off argylle street and ingram street. there is a food market, craft market, street performers and live music. it is usually a really nice vibe around there and chilled places to watch the world go by..

i agree with gmm - stirling is lovely. you can get a train frm glasgow - good regular servcie at about £10 return. full of lovely old shops, winding streets and of course the castle...

any other tourist ideas - i will put them down and if we know of clothing ideas = let's share them s well
i'm in a god mood today!

geordiemacminx · 22/09/2006 11:36

I think we are both in the wrong jobs WO... I tihnk we would make excellent tourist advisors!!!

Vio · 22/09/2006 12:28

Hi gals!

Thank you very much indeed. Got loads of idea now.

so if i want to go to the westend, just take the tube and the stations are either Kelvinbridge or Hillhead then?

So there is a train from Glasgow to Stirling then? i would really want to go there myself too.

Museum of morden art in Glasgow, ( v.interesting cos my sister is a student of Graphic design ) where is it exactly?

I think i now know where princes square is..is it the one when you walk down from buchanan street...that nice old posh building?

Would sure go to that elephant house cafe. ( think they would love to go). errr..maybe go to loch lomond this sunday ( not sure ) depends on the weather. I will get my hushand to drive..

i will look for primark next time when i go to the city centre...sure i have walked passed it before but just never noticed it. I really do need some bigger clothes cos i feel bigger myself.

Weather is lovely ...well so far...so i guess we are all in good mood. plus its friday!

Thanks again!

weeonion · 22/09/2006 12:48

vio- glallery of modern art is on royal exchange square on queen street - straight ahead from queen street station.
hope the weather is nice for you all weekend!

geordiemacminx · 22/09/2006 13:37

If you go to Loch Lomond then on the way you can stop at Braehead shopping centre (Primark) and also a big ikea.. there is new leisure development next door to braehead www.xscape.co.uk, not sure whether its your thing or not.. probably not whilst you are "with child" but there are loads of retuarants and a bar where you can watch the sking and such like too.

Vio · 22/09/2006 13:56

HI geordie n weeonion,

Thank you v.much for your info and ideas.

I am searching the internet to find out more now. I think i need to get a map of Glasgow & Edinburgh..

I know a bit about the city centre but i guess becos i dont really drive..i don't know much about other places...but Glasgow is my home now so i am getting used to it and learning more about the place everyday.

Thanks v.much. Have a lovely weekend!

weeonion · 25/09/2006 16:22

hey vio - i know you are busy with your sis - hope it is all going well.
GMM - i know from teh main thread that you had a ms filled one - hope you are feling better today and aint in teh loo/ garden so much this week.

chubski - aint heard from you in a while. how did the antenatal appt go??

geordiemacminx · 25/09/2006 16:36

Yep saturday was a bit of a disaster... but mangaged a few bits and pieces yesterday in between sleeps!!!! I saw that you had a pretty rubbish saturday night.. I think its horrible that anyone was cheeky enough to mention your weight..it would have been even worse if you werent with child!!! Shame about your dp too.. I have to admit mine is being fantastic, weighting on me hand and foot.. sending me to mums this weekend so he can decorate our bedroom..

Perhaps he was just a bit stressed with having his family here... blokes can be a nightmare when they get with their mates, and get their drinking trousers on.. male bravado.. "I'm gonna stay up the latest and get the drunkest and then get the missus to pick me up".. I hope he was suitably hung over on Sunday!!!

weeonion · 25/09/2006 18:30

hey gmm - just posted to you on other thread.

what a poo w'end fo r us both...

dp's family can be alright but not the most sensitive. they know i have had a real issue with my weight for years - having lost ALOT at one stage. i sued to be V V thin and have put weight on - not to do with pg tho'. i think they feel they can say whatever they like sometimes.
he was suitably hungover yesterday but it didnt stop the lot of them demanding a full cooked breakfast. as if! i was up so early - i made sure the noise levels were high - hoovering, washing machine on, the Killers playing loudly..... i wasnt intending to help their heads any. revenge can be sweet.

dp is used to ne being a very independant strong willed sort and isnt used to this moddy, weeping and fearful person. neither am i. it is usually me who sorts most things out in my own and our joint lives. there is a bit of changing roles going on. he does try but hasnt a clue sometimes.......

ah well - that'll all change in another 7 mths!!!!!
u feeling any better tonight?

suis · 26/09/2006 05:09

Hello,

Just thought I would say Hi on what seems to have turned into the "Scotland" thread. I'm in Stirling, and we get 2 scans on the NHS. I've got my 20 week scan in a couple of days.

That said I can agree with folk on the level of contact you get. It's very confusing who you should phone when if you have questions or worries, and there's not a lot of contact especially early on. Even at 20 weeks I'm still pretty unclear on lots of what's going to happen.

... and I can beat you all for being an old lady.. I'm 36 now and will be 37 by the time I am due in Feb.

liath · 26/09/2006 07:44

Hi Suis!

The scan provision is bonkers!! In fact I'm sure that all Health Boards are supposed to routinely offer a 20 week scan & Lothian is trying to wriggle out of it. Grrr.

Hope you had a good weekend with your sister, Vio.

geordiemacminx · 26/09/2006 09:19

Yep its the tartan army... even though I think its only liath that is actually scottish!!

I know what you mean about being independant and such like WO... I'm exactly the same, but at the moment I cant even pack the dishwasher!!!! Had a look at the hypnobirthing site.. looks good. DP thinks its a "croc of sh*te" but hey thats just him... he would say that.. labour aint gonna hurt him one bit!!!

Welcome suis!!! We were just talking about Stirling last week... very nice place!! Is this your first?

Hopefully you'll keep popping into this thread...I'm sure we'll be having meet ups once we all get fat, and once the little ones are born. Do you know what you are having?
