Ah- if they live beyond two or three seasons, they stop laying as well. The poor things are engineered to lay every single day from 5 months until their first moult at about 18 months (hens don't lay while they rebuilding their feathers as they need the proteins for feather production). At this stage most farms will chuck them out- either rehoming them or sending them off to be made into Shipham's paste. If you rehome chickens at this stage they won't lay at all well for 2 or three months (especially if they come from a battery farm as they are indeed clapped out and traumatised ). Better to get them as Point of Lay pullets (ie at about 20 weeks of age) ime, worthy as rehoming them seems, as you avoid health problems and parasites from getting them from an intensive farm.

ermintrude13 · 20/07/2009 10:24

duchesse I love it when a MNetter shares expertise in a subject I never expected to find here. Now I'm all interested in chickens. Only we have a neighbour who kept them and firstly they ruined the entire garden and secondly got et by a fox and traumatised the DC. Also they might attack our cowardly pusscats. But I do see the attraction

Ta for Sedona tip Iris. The J Clarkson review I found was appalling, which would normally recommend it to me but DH doesn't like the look of 'em.

JJ and JW no way will DH consider anything that looks like a van. He's not a fussy or fashionable man and has never had a car less than 5 yrs old but when he does get them he cares about the style. I know the Touran is a terrible cliche but that's because it's perfect for a family with 3 kids who occasionally drive other kids around and who go camping for their hols. The room inside and the seating options are splendid. We could get an old Zafira cheaper but they're not as solid as the VWs and when you're talking a difference of £2K for a car that will last us 10 yrs we'd tend to go for durability. They're not like those massive Lexus stupid shiny truck things though! We've still not made up our minds yet. DH wants to get an electric scooter for himself

duchesse · 20/07/2009 10:31

Sorry, am a bit of a chicken-nerd.

If anyone is going to the Warrington Breastfeeding Picnic will see you there.

mornin all

Pooped,. shattered and knackered. D refused to got to bed until midnight last night and even then he went proper hysterical bawling every time we left him alone in the room. Seems it has just occured to him that this being put to bed on his own malarky is a most unjust state of affairs and wasn't going to take it lying down, literally.

Cue us running up and down stairs until he finally dropped of. He had to be dragged out of bed this morning of course. He seems quite usettled at the moment - almost anything will make him adopt a sad whingy face. Possibly more teefs on the horizon.

Sympathies to all who had similar band nights.

My brain hurts - must get more coffee down me.

Tee2072 · 20/07/2009 11:10

Back from shopping.

Did I get shoes? I did not.

Did I get a new diaper bag? I did not.

Did I get a 100% organic cotton Piglet at the Disney Store for £4? Yes I did.

mrsboogie · 20/07/2009 11:25

didn't she do well

johnworf · 20/07/2009 11:28

tee does the piglet look good on one of your feet? If so, wear it! Btw, I got some nice Clarks shoes in the sale last week. 50% off down to £25 My winter shoes sorted out.

mrsb know exactly how you feel. It's shite isn't it? The little buggers have figured out stuff and if they don't like it, they scream the place down. I feel the days of putting them down and they'd accept warm crib and full tum are long gone.

ermintrude we actually laughed at the man who showed us the Doblo in the showroom. Then I cried when I realised that DH was coming around to liking it. However, it gets all of our camping gear in the back and gets me from A to B. Style is overrated anyway. Geek is this seasons black

I've eaten so much crappy food of late I feel crap. Well they do say you are what you eat. Seriously, I feel torpid.

No plans for today. Done my cleaning stint and now I'm twiddling said thumbs until madam gets up and makes her set of demands for the day. Hurrah

Tee2072 · 20/07/2009 11:36

Don't think it would fit JW. Its a very small Piglet.

I was at Clarks. Nothing appealed to me.

iris66 · 20/07/2009 11:51

Someone please bollock me for deciding to blitz my disgusting kitchen floor Hormonal, tired moodiness always gets me cleaning but now, I feel, is not a good time

johnworf · 20/07/2009 11:58

tee got mine online and then picked up from store. Not sure what's left though.

iris sit tee down lass and get a cuppa. You shouldn't be mopping .....rest!

OP posts:
johnworf · 20/07/2009 12:00

Golf has finished. Wish the cricket had too.

OP posts:
jeanjeannie · 20/07/2009 13:10

jw I had to look it up but I LOVE the word 'torpid' - that's exactly how i feel after my Kentucky last night [bleugh emoticon] Golf is the devil's invention and cricket isn't far behind.

duchesse cheers for all the info. erm yep, you're right, it is really nice to get interesting info from unexpected places! FWIW - I would have got the Touran if I'd had my way - but I didn't !

mrsb EEEk - midnight Gosh, do you have a plan for tonight? Medi-sed cocktails around 7pm perhaps Joke ...before SS come a knocking!

tee organic piglets...priceless

iris sit down and STOP! Cleaning is only necessary when they're crawling on the floor and licking off the bits from it and you've gto a fair few months yet!

We went to John Lewis ....empty! Got a shopping trolley and play fruit for Iris - i think we need to move on with her toys.

I'm a bit worried about Verity. She still can't roll over and shows no signs of pulling herself up - plus she is really, really small. I mean, jw I've seen pics of K in her tripp Trap and she looks double the height of Verity. Am wondering if I should see a HV - but something just tells me they're all potty and I should avoid.....

Tabitha8 · 20/07/2009 13:14

Ah, I like the cricket. I hope we win. Benjamin enjoys it, too. He's asleep at the moment. A miracle. He never sleeps. Ever.
Tee I love Piglet. (Not to eat, he'll be pleased to note). Was he in hiding, because of pig flu? I hope he isn't being blamed .

johnworf · 20/07/2009 13:50

JJ I can't believe that Verity is tiny. She was looking like a toddler at 6 months old. All the pics I've seen of her she looks well in proportion. You know what you've done don't you? You've swallowed all the crap they've sold you at the clinic! What do you think when you look at her? Does she eat well?

K is long but there's no fat on her. When I looked at the babies at the mother & toddler group, they're huge compared to her. All fat wrists/knees/cheeks. She's just not like that and never will be. But I accept it and when they start sucking their breath in cos she's hovering somewhere between the 25th and the 9th centile, then I start asking them why they're worried and I'm not. She started on the 25th centile so it's not a big surprise.

As for the crawling/walking etc I wouldn't sweat that either. My two boys were still bum shuffling at 16 months and I had visions of them doing it around the school classroom! This was following on from my first child who walked when she was 10 months and was reeling off nursery rhymes at 1. They get up in the end, when they're ready. I'm afraid that's the bottom line really; when they're ready. I'm hoping that K will be walking by xmas but I'd be amazed if it happens before

At least you've learnt a new word today

OP posts:
johnworf · 20/07/2009 13:52

tabitha cricket is over. We won. Apparently not done so in donkey's years. Enjoy the silence in the meantime.

I suppose I should manage a (feeble) hurrah!

I wish I could buy Medi-sed but they've restricted it for over 2's now haven't they? I was interrogated when I asked for it

OP posts:
jeanjeannie · 20/07/2009 13:59

Yeah jw i know....sort of. It's just that Verity isn't on the charts Not for length - I mean she's that short.... She's gone from the 25th centile at birth to ZERO! Now, I know she was BF and those charts are being dumped fairly soon, but I can't help wondering why she's so little? I mean Iris was WAY bigger and she was prem...just keeps ticking over in my mind.

It's not the crawling- it's the rolling that worries me. Apparently it's a key autism sign and i think I'm worried about having 2 LO's on the spectrum - I'm finding out how hard and off-the-beaten-track life can be with Iris. And apprently there is at least a 30% chance that Verity will follow.

Not my best day - but like you say, I have learnt a new word. Oh and I think the overwhelmingly bad farts Iris keeps letting out are starting to adle my brain. What has she eaten?

ermintrude13 · 20/07/2009 14:11

Iris DO NOT clean your kitchen floor (/whispers But if you want to pop round and do mine, feel free, it needs it desperately. Don't tell the others ).

JJ See, your DH and JW's DH went for the practical car option that didn't cost too much. My DH has too strong a visual sense - it's because of his work, I'm sure, or his work is largely because of it maybe - so he just wouldn't drive something he didn't find at least a little aesthetically pleasing. He chose my Fiat Cinqecento for me because he knew I'd love it and it was a good shade of blue, when we could have got something much more solid and zippy for the same price. He really needs to be a kept man but for that to happen I'd need to turn into Jodie Picoult .

Re: tiny Verity - as JW says, if she eats well, looks in proportion and has plenty of energy she's fine. A petite friend of mine has an even more petite DD who has never ever made it onto the lowest centile of any chart but she's strong and flexible and perfectly formed. In terms of walking - I too was a bottom-shuffler until 16 months and never crawled - same with my DH. Apparently I was v fussy about keeping my plastic frilly knickers in pristine condition .

Tee good shopping trip . Adam can chew it - or even eat it! - on account of its organicness.

Changing bags - have you tried ebay? I got this one - v cheap, looks good and DH is happy to wear it too.

mrsboogie · 20/07/2009 14:13

but hasn't V been sitting up and saying words for months now jj? surely that's got to count for something? She doesn't look small and neither does K for that matter although jw says she is.

I just think they do different things at different times and when they are ahead at one thing they can be behind at another. D can pull himself up to standing no bother but we'll be waiting a long time to get a mama or dada out of him and he cannot, despite trying and trying, get the hang of crawling.

Tabitha8 · 20/07/2009 14:23

JW That was only the second test. Three more to go. Here's hoping.
Benjamin is screaming again. I knew he wouldn't let me down.

jeanjeannie · 20/07/2009 14:27

Ooo, nice changing bag erm
Actually I was very surprised by my DP and his car choice...as he's really, really fussy about style. OK, he's not metrosexual but he too loves the cinqecento - and anything Alpha Romeo or Italian. When i met him he had a Alpha and a Lancia! So, no one was more amazed than me when he went for the Berlingo. Mind you - fair play to him - we're constantly using it to the max.

Yep, must get it all into perseptive. Funny, it's not bothered me till recently...just feels like a long time before she's doing anything new.

Iris is a shopping trolley daemon!

duchesse · 20/07/2009 14:34

I just ordered one of these for the baby. It's not organic but it does have googly eyes and prominent teeth so was a must.

johnworf · 20/07/2009 15:07

duchesse nice choice. Please, don't tempt me with more lovely things. DH will string me up if I buy any more 'nice' stuff home

tabitha didn't realise it was one episode in a series of cricket. Head in gas oven moment. Gah!

JJ you know it makes sense. I'm sure that K will be lounging around the bottom of those centile charts before long. She's not eaten very much with this cold and there isn't much fat reserve on her. She's happy enough though and has bags of energy. More than me I think you can get down especially when there's babies of the same age doing loads of things that yours can't yet. It's so tempting to compare and all you do is fall into the trap and then end up fed up cos yours isn't doing so many tricks. Meh.

I think you're focusing on Verity now that you have found Iris may be on the autistic spectrum. I can understand that. I've done the same with K and DSS.

Btw meant to ask you, has anyone mentioned to you about claiming DLA for Iris?

mrsb you off today or have the wolves at work been kept at bay?

ermintrude my DH goes for practicality over all things. I think that is why he married me

OP posts:
mrsboogie · 20/07/2009 15:10

at work jw unfortunately,

just had to send a colleague home who was looking and feeling very ill indeed...

jeanjeannie · 20/07/2009 15:19

Yep, you're right jw!

Nah, no mention of DLA and, if the letter we got from the paed today is anything to go by then it's highly doubtful we'd qualify. That's another story, for another time - but let's just say - bloody hell, I'm confused

duchesse adore the toothsome lapin!
