ah yes - saw the "brake lining plant" sign. And I do live near you (I think) - am just ignorant {grin]

duchesse · 19/07/2009 20:16

We are a chick grandma now. Notoriously unmaternal hen managed to hatch a clutch and I really wasn't expecting them today! Most remarkable thing is that I found two of the poor little things halfway across the coop, looking dead (glassy eyes, the works) and pretty much stone cold. I picked them and thought I saw a toe twitch on each, so popped them back under their mother, and a couple of hours later they've come back to life and seem fine! It's a miracle.

Baby guinea pigs virtually teenaged already. You're only ever in for the short-haul with creatures... Not sure if that's a good thing or not. Although after the dog's performance in the night (several piles of crap dotted around the house) I think possibly good.

johnworf · 19/07/2009 21:00

JJ glad your OH found it funny. If only it wasn't true!

Flops down and demands a hot earl grey inside her

I'm pooped. Had a few chips and bit of fish that fell off someones plate. K is ready for partying..no signs of sleepiness at all. Better get the calpol out

mrsb K can also stand in her cot but only if we stand her up. She's can't get there herself like D. Think we'll need to put the base on the cot down soon though just in case she feels the need to bail out.

Some b'day pics on FB if anyone interested. There's pic of cake too

Duchesse Think of all the cakes you'll be able to make with all those extra eggs, or are most of the chicks boys?
We have a Dyson but it isn't used much .

dawntigga · 19/07/2009 21:32

Today was poo day.

DP changed him and during the change he deposited more. I think the increased feeds are going to make poo day more interesting from now on.

Tabitha- Alas I cannot eat eggs, for they make me ill. Not even in cakes... If they are hens, they should hopefully lay green eggs.

Some people can tell at this stage whether the chicks are boys or girls (my neighbour says sturdy legs means a boy), but I didn't really get a good look before popping them back under their mum. Plus she's a bit protective (I have the peck marks all over my hands to prove it!).

johnworf · 19/07/2009 21:56

Think I'd peck you if you messed with my eggs!

OP posts:
Tee2072 · 19/07/2009 22:00

Mental note: don't mess with JW's eggs.

Okay, A has had two longish sleeps today. One of which is still happening, although I am changing him into PJs in about 30 minutes, awake or not.

So who wants to bet that he'll wake up in the next 30 minutes (which he probably will) and won't go back to sleep for hours. Or if he does, he'll only sleep for two hours at a time. All.night.long...

johnworf · 19/07/2009 22:03

It's a phenomenon usually known as sod's law tee. Or no rest for the wicked

OP posts:
Tee2072 · 19/07/2009 22:06

Yes, but am I the wicked? Or is my 5 week old son?

hedgepig · 19/07/2009 22:11

Tee I expect you are right, but I hope you will be pleasantly surprised.

duchess well done on the chicken rescue it's amazing they revived so well. Green eggs, sounds yummy I asume only on the outside .

DT B used to do these projectile poos when he was little, it hit the wardrobe once!

johnworf · 19/07/2009 22:16

Green eggs and ham?

MrsB lol @ The Host . Muffins sound fab - those are the kind I have to resist in Sainsbury's.

JJ A compact MPV is the kind of thing - a phrase I'd never heard of a week ago. VW Touran but you pay for the make, Vauxhall Zafira, poss Renault C4. Something which can go up to 7 seats so if I take DD and DS1 swimming with a friend each there'll still be room for Arthur. Or when the 5 of us go camping there'll be plenty of boot room for baby gear. If we sell both our old cars and find something round 3 yrs old with lowish mileage for sale below £9K we can put in another £4-5K. DH fancies an electric scooter to get him to work and then we'd just have to work around days he needs a car for travelling out of Nottingham etc. We've never had a car worth that much, or only 3 yrs old, so would plan to keep it for a decade. Any recommendations folks?

Duchesse I think that's brave, picking up dead looking chicks and reviving them the way you did. I'd have gone yeeurk and poked them with a twig

Tee Arthur has slept too much today too - and woke twice the past two nights - so the happy period of one wake a night lasted precisely 3 days.

Dawntigga is that Chapel en le Frith?

Tee2072 · 19/07/2009 22:29

One Fish
Two Fish
Red Fish
Blue Fish

Night all!!

duchesse · 20/07/2009 05:30

JW- I wouldn't have minded but I was only trying to help the stupid bird with her chicks! She'd calmed down later and stopped minding me hauling them out to check on their progress. I'll go out and check on them again in a few minutes when it's a bit lighter.

heron22 · 20/07/2009 08:12

gosh duchesse what are you doing up this early? hiw are you?

iris66 · 20/07/2009 08:17

morning

Nocturnal N tried matricide last night keeping me up until 3.45!! aggh DH went to work at 7.30 but luckily should be home by 11. I think I may stay in pjs today.

duchesse - congratulations on chickgrannydom blimey you've really got your hands full haven't you!

ermintrude - we got an ex demo Sedona in Feb and I love it. 7 seats - all removable (apart from drivers seat ) loads of storage and handles brilliantly - paid just under 11k and, to my mind, a bargain! worth a look.

..........I hear boys screaming.... back later

Tee2072 · 20/07/2009 08:18

Morning all.

Up twice, but not too bad of a night. And I've showered and am having a cup of coffee! And going shoe shopping in a little while.

Lovely weather here. Hope it is the same all over.

dawntigga · 20/07/2009 08:45

erm why yes it is

It'sASmallWorldButIWouldn'tWantToPaintItTiggaxx

jeanjeannie · 20/07/2009 08:57

Blimey - awful night - Iris up screaming then stayed awake playing for two hours

duchesse Oooo, sweeet, we're really thinking about having chickens next year. I gather they don't live long, so if it's not for us we won't have long to wait. Not like buying a parrot

erm Oh, I nearly bought a touran...but it's one of the yummy mummy choices round here so now I'm glad I didn't! There were three Lexus monster when i picked Iris up from school the other day and those monster truck BMWs....pur-lease! We've only got 2 girls but already that means I can get mum and dad in the car if I need to. Good luck in the search and yes, about 2-3 yrs old is the way to go - let it depreciate most of its value before you get it!

tee congrats on getting a shower - that's a mere pipe dream here!

jw fb pics are gorgeous. Cake? what cake?

Dull day ahead. Everyone is staying inside due to pig flu. Lots of stuff is cancelled because of it....so it's going to be a very dull 6 weeks

BonzoDoodah · 20/07/2009 09:03

Morning all
I'm off to my mate's house for lunch (invited last night) - only it was her birthday and I haven't seen her since and have bought precicely nothing yet (bad Bonzo). Cue rushing to "the drawer of random presents" to find something inspired ... phew - found a lovely photo frame and some silly slipper socks. Now just need a dash to Waitrose to buy some organic hand cream and I can relax. Must remember to re-stock the drawer!

Congrats on chickygranny ... or could that be GrannyChic duchesse? Our neighbour has chickens but no cockerel (thank goodness). M loves visiting them to feed them sweetcorn (chicken heroin apparently).

Dawnhopethepooratehassloweddown.

duchesse · 20/07/2009 09:24

Heron- I'm in my last month, during which I can officially sleep at any time of day or night.

Yesterday I was asleep literally all afternoon (about 12-6, give or take a couple of spells up) and went back to bed at 9:30, so was quite awake at 5. I actually went back to bed at 6 and only just got up. By my reckoning I'm heading for sleeping about 20 hours a day, just at fairly random times!

duchesse · 20/07/2009 09:28

jj- if you get those brown cross breed hens reared for intensive farms, they live for only a few years (3-5) but lay very well! They are also very cheap (about £4 each around here), so they have everything going for them in the novice chicken keeping dept! Most pure breds will live anything up to 10 or more years. I have a rehomed bantam from a friend that is 15 years old. Totally blind in one eye but still going very strong.

johnworf · 20/07/2009 09:33

Morning all. Just catching up. Had early night and good job I did as madam herself was up at 5am demanding milk. She did go straight back down but interrupted sleep aint the same is it?

Anyway, think Poirot here has found out the cause of the coughs/sneezles of last week; two more teeth up top. That's 5 actually through in her mouth and 1 sitting there ready. It's a really funny look as 4 are at the bottom whereas it's usually 4 up top and 2 down below. Trust K to do it arse about face!

ermintrude we've got a Doblo. Think they do a 7 seater version but won't be any good to you. It's praps the most uncool car you can buy apart form anything with a Skoda badge on it. JJ has something akin. We both look like ice cream men when we go out

There is some cake on FB pics somewhere...unless I ate most of it

OP posts:
jeanjeannie · 20/07/2009 09:34

Oh duchesse that's interesting. We had a long chat the other week with a lady who was telling us all about intensive farm hens - she didn't mention that they lay well. In fact I go the opposite impressive - that they were knackered out old things who didn't lay much!

And we fell in love with the bantams last week at a farm - the cockerel was lovely. My mum had them as a kid. Now I'd no idea they lived that long...with or without 20/20 vision

I can see I'm going to have to lurk on the chicken keepers section of MN!
