dawntigga I'm wondering why you love BLW? Have you tried it already?

This is a conversation we had on here a while ago. There are a lot of ...hmm....how can I put it....BLW facists on MN? Not on this thread I hasten to add. I don't have anything against it per se but after already having 3 children, when BLW wasn't around nor fashionable with those that like to adopt each trend as it appears....I fed the older ones puree, they ate it, they thrived and grew up.

The fact that Katherine will only eat semi solid food is because she is such a willful child. Nothing to do with how I think she should be fed.

I am not keen on her shoving semi-solid food in her mouth as she has a tendency to choke. Which she does on a frequent basis.

The last time we went to Cornwall and stayed on a campsite we had the couple next door arguing in their drunken state at 4am. I am very much hoping that by paying through the nose for Centre Parcs next year we will be outpricing the chavs from our enjoyment

yeah - its the choking I don't like either - D is always choking (not really choking but gagging - still scary) and I hate it.

There's nowt wrong with doing whatever it is that gets the food down their throats whether it is mush or bits of sticks.

jeanjeannie · 31/07/2009 07:35

Morning all. Another action-packed day at jjHQ

Iris is off to nursery where the Paediatrician is doing an assessement today - now not sure how i feel about it all and a formal diagnosis. There been some wonderful discussions about it over on the SN children board....the pros and cons of getting it all down on paper - some amazing people on there. Anyway - at least I don't have to be there and Iris won't be aware of it. Be interesting to see how she behaves as we're getting some real toddler manipulation at the moment!

In other news - everyone here has a runny bum

What about everyone else - how was you night? What great excitment lay before you all?

It's FRIDAY! tee I hope the gas behaves today and you're not evicted and forced to roam the streets!

Tee2072 · 31/07/2009 07:35

Good morning all!

JW magic baby sleep dust worked! A slept from 930 to 415!! And then 5 to 7. And now he's asleep again. I am not counting on this ever happening again!

BLW seems daft to me. I mean to do it deliberately, obviously if the baby leans that way (like K), go for it. But to only offer finger food? Sounds like a recipe for choking for sure.

dawntigga · 31/07/2009 08:48

jw not done the blw thing yet and tbh heard about it through the book rather than here but it feels right to me. I'm not value locked into anything really when it comes to raising ds (except I hate the idea of controlled crying, not saying that if anyone else wants to go with it that's wrong, it's just not something I can't do).

As I understand it K is a bit older and the gag reflex will have moved to the back of the throat now making choking a hazard for both of you - how do you cope with that?

Also jw I'm far to lazy to go mashing things up to feed him, it's hard enough getting up and making sure my socks match! It's one of the reasons I bf, the idea of making up bottles all day and night makes me shudder!

Tee my understanding after doing quite a bit of research (and asking the only pediatric dr I trust) is that the gag reflex at 6 months is very near the front of the mouth. This means that your baby will gag but not choke. This slowly moves backwards to the back of the throat as the baby gets older helping avoid choking as baby gets use to the size of food they can have in his/her mouth. The pincer movement required to manipulate the tiny food that can be a choking hazard doesn't kick in until about 9 months by which time (hopefully) baby will have learned exactly what they can and can't fit in through the gag reflex.

I get what you mean about blw on here it can be a bit of a evangelical experience talking to some about blw. Each to their own is my moto.

Still if blw doesn't work for us we can always go back to mashing things up. Although, as I am the laziest person in the world I hope not!

jj good luck with today

morning all
tee well done A for sleeping so well
i am on escitalopram 5mg, but been quite anxious and saw psychiatrist he upped my med to 10mg per day. DH not keen for me to up my med cos he is worried it will be hard to come off it. he said he would rather i go see my psychologist again for CBT. not sure what to do!

ok fri today. a bit behind ideal schedule this morning

expressing milk now. LO having a small nap. pretty soon we will have to make tracks, DS1 has got summer club this morning and LO going to creche for a couple of hours so i have some free time cant wait!

johnworf · 31/07/2009 09:03

Morning ladies!

tee I am so glad that the magic baby sleep dust worked for you...alas, I was up at 4am with Princess K whilst she stocked up on milk We're regressing with the sleeping arrangements it seems. I know what it is down to...the fact that she isn't getting enough to eat during the day. I guess we're gonna have to ride this phase out (like we did with all the other phases!)

How on earth a 6 month old can get any food down their throat when most don't even have teeth is beyond me! I'm struggled with a 14 month old (10 months corrected) who has 5 teeth and even she can't make enough go down to satisfy.

Anyhoo, more pressing matters today. We're off to see the cardiologist at the brand spanking new children's hospital in Manchester. He's a really lovely, lovely man and I'm very impressed with how he puts things to us ('why do an operation for the sake of it'? was his last quote). I'm hoping, as ever the pessimistic optimist I am, that he'll say it's closed by itself and job is indeed a good one. I'll know by this afternoon.

JJ all I can offer is the experience of DSS's classroom assessment. Ed Psych's been totally non-committal saying that yes, he displays signs of AS and then 'but on the otherhand he doesn't'. This was based on a unplanned visit. This is the report that is challenging the consultant psychiatrists diagnosis. Methinks hers is about pounds, shillings and pence I hope that you have lots more luck and that they all come to the same decision on their findings

Happy Friday to all of you lovely ladies.

ladies, your opinions please

DH has got to go to mumbai for a couple of weeks late august. should i and DS1 and LO go along with him?

reason i am hesitating:

  1. long flight - swine flu?
  2. long flihgt - screaming baby?
  3. bad weather in mumbai rightnow monsoon!

reason i am considering it:

  1. no housework for couple of weeks
  2. no cooking!
  3. can get babysitter while i relax?
heron22 · 31/07/2009 09:05

btw, LO is 6 months old

johnworf · 31/07/2009 09:31

heron FWIW if it was me, I'd stay at home. Seems like a lot of upheaval.

OP posts:
jeanjeannie · 31/07/2009 09:41

Good luck jw and i hope the nice Dr man tells you want you want to hear - and if he doesn't I'm sure it won't be too scary xxx Lets us know as soon as poss

heron I know nothing about meds I'm afraid - I'm generally one of lifes 'labradors' for which I'm eternally grateful for although after having both girls I did come darn close to cracking up. As for Mumbai - gosh - probably not with a little one, just because of the upheaval. If you go, will there be anything for you guys to do in the day? As much as I'd love to go (puts self forward for the trip!!!) I think the stress of it may finish me off!!!!

tee fab news on a having such a good night!

Off for a cuppa and to get her majesty out of her cot as she's wailing!

mrsboogie · 31/07/2009 10:15

morning all

hmm difficult one heron tempting for the trip but not for the baby hassles. Then again what about being left at home for two weeks?. Would leave the swine flu out of the equation because if they are out and about in the world they are going to be exposed anyway. Will your DH be in meetings all day while you are stuck indoors in a hotel? will the hotel be a nice 5 star one? these issues are also important .

re blw- D has no idea at all what does and doesn't fit down his throat - he has about 10 teeth and can bite chunks off things v effectively but can't chew obviously so has only a certain amount of control about how much goes down. He gags all the time.

jw hope all goes well at the hospital and no intervention is deemed necessary.

must go - meeting.

mrsboogie · 31/07/2009 10:21

ooh and well done baby A on the good sleeping!

D slept from 9pm til 8am! but had no bottles at all after leaving grandparents and before bed. V dry nappy this morning. He is full of manky cold.

Tee2072 · 31/07/2009 10:21

jw hope all goes well today with nice doctor. Do let as know as soon as!

heron I wouldn't go due to upheaval. I agree with mrsb that SF shouldn't even be in the equation.

Also, heron I think CBT is total crap. Has never worked for me. But then again, I've had an anxiety/borderline agoraphobia/bi polar disorder (delete as necessary) diagnoses for about 25 years, so I will never be off meds again. And thank god for that.

mrsb have a lovely meeting

johnworf · 31/07/2009 10:30

heron what kind of depression/anxiety has been diagnosed for you? I believe, although may be wrong, that CBT only responds to reactive depression. Clinical depression will not respond to it. If your physician has put this forward then I'm guessing he/she knows what he's talking about (unlike myself!)

mrsb well done on D sleeping through. Might be on catch up if he's had a couple of broken nights sleep. Whatever the reason, hurrah! Have a fab meeting - if poss

I had the opposite problem at 4am with K's nappy, absolutely wet through. I think may be what woke her. Having a sodden cloth nappy when the wee has gone cold must be v uncomfortable! Anyway, whatever the reason, she's having a zizz now. Out the door when she wakes up.

As for hospital will let you know when I get back. Hoping for good news

OP posts:
heron22 · 31/07/2009 10:54

thanks for your input

ur all right, the upheaval is not worth the effort. yes DH will be at work all day. the hotel is lovely. but just checked the weather in mumbai. it is monsoon season, pouring rain everyday. so i think we will stay at home, where we have our regular routine!

about depression, jw i have reactive kind of depression/anxiety. reaction to major life upheavals eg having baby!

tee it is great that the meds work dont they? my meds is making a difference to me thats for sure!

i wish i was more easy going! i think most of my problem stems from the fact that i am too controlling and always looking for perfection!

heron22 · 31/07/2009 11:04

jw yes let us know when u get back from hospital! fingers crossed for good news !

BonzoDoodah · 31/07/2009 13:11

Afternoon all.
Good grief what a day you lot had! Duchesse buggeration about the car! and Tee with the gas leak ... nightmare. Am v impressed with your speedy departure!

Jw good luck at the cardiologist.

heron I was going to say blooming well GO to Mumbai! 6-7 months old is really easy to travel with a babe - before they're walking and crawling - they don't mind the plane journey as they are sitting on your knee and don't want to get down all the time. If the hotel is a nice one (with a pool) you don't have to worry about the environment for the LO and you can have a couple of weeks with no cooking or cleaning etc. Plus Mumbai is a fairly good city to travel about in. And you'd have decent taxis etc with the hotel. Plus it's going to shed it down with rain for the next month here so why not go somewhere warm! Monsoon season enerally means it rains A LOT but all at once. Usually lashes it down for a couple of hours and then is okay for the rest of the day. I'd LOVE to go back to India though so I may be biased ... but going with someone else paying and staying in a nice hotel instead of backpacking on a budget would be lovely!

BonzoDoodah · 31/07/2009 13:25

Thanks for all the birthday wishes yesterday - I had a lovely day. DH made me a delicious breakfast of fresh cherries and blueberries with Greek yoghurt and honey (mmmmm). A stash of ace presents includind two Fleetwood Mac CDs, An Outnumbered DVD and the book of Humph's introductions to cities from ISIHAC (BRILLIANT!). Oh plus Sunflowers and a touch-dimmer bedside lamp for easier BF in the night. [Spoiled face]

My Best friend then came round with more ace presents including some mega red shoes from Next. We went for lunch at the local pub which involved my first trip out after coming out of hospital. Took the Phil and Teds with baby in cocoon and it was great. Had DIVINE lunch then back for some of THAT chocolate cake [slurp]. THEN parents came round (more presents and money for a bra from Bravissimo) and brought a fantastic Indian Take-away which we all slurped and then had MORE chcolate cake.

BURP !!!!!

So ... I weighed myself yesterday morning and I had lost 7 lb in 3 days making it nearly 2 stone in 8 days (including baby and gubbins) ... but I think by today most of that will be back on. Hurrah!

jeanjeannie · 31/07/2009 14:00

OMG Bonzo that is one HECK of a birthday AND weight loss

johnworf · 31/07/2009 14:15

Jeez bonzo I feel full just reading about that food

Ok we're back. Nice doctor was not there (didn't ask why). Substituted by some elderly australian lady doctor who looked like she should have been at home, knitting some tea cosies. She was very disorganised, muddling through the whole appointment, dropping stethoscope and all the notes all over the floor Then said she couldn't get a measurement on the duct as K was too wriggly. Actually, K was the best behaved she has been in ages for a lying down wriggly baby...anyhoo. The verdict is thus.....wait another 6 months to do the procedure. Better for K as she'll be bigger. Better for surgeon as the artery will also be bigger. This consultant likes to do them at 10kgs which K is nowhere near. She's 17lb 7oz today and has fallen down to the 9th centile. Tbh I'm not that bothered by her weight (or lack of it). She's so active, bright, alert and eating what she wants and guzzling milk to make up. So there we have it. It's going to happen but just not yet

heron if you do go, won't LO need injections for India? Won't you need injections too?

OP posts:
jeanjeannie · 31/07/2009 14:48

Great news jw and I'm lol@the Ozzie doctor!
Another six months of letting K just get on with it and get bigger.

Iris is back from nursery with a barage of words/sentances. Todays fave so far is "you DO like chocolate biscits don't you?" Random!

johnworf · 31/07/2009 15:07

JJ and the burning question is, well, do you like chocolate biscuits? You wonder what is going on in their heads sometimes don't you?

We had to take DSS with us today. Cue fretful brother in the corner. He was almost on top of K in the consulting room..frightened that she'd be whisked off somewhere (where? no idea, but somewhere not v nice in his head). He's been following me around like a shadow all day...well, me when I've got K with me. It's really very strange that he's so worried about her. I'm sure my older 3 aged nine couldn't have given a rats arse about anything unless it involved Power Rangers, Ninja Turtles or if their sibling had more peas on their plate than them. Anyway, I think he feels a bit better now that the op is put on hold.

I wonder if Iris has her own little worries? At the moment I think it may involve biscuits
