JW This is what the lady with the very prem baby posted today. I don't really understand any of it, so I thought I'd post it here so you can see what you think. I think she's going to start a separate thread.

From MichaelaS:
Hi all, thanks for your support and well wishes. Nathan is now 3 days and 7 hours old. Unfortunatley he doesn't seem to be getting any better, and he had a bad episode today when they tried to wean him off one of the medicines, so we have had a horrible day.

We had him christened, and we calmed down a bit and he is currently stable again but back on full (20%) NO gas and about 60% O2. They have said he needs to come off the NO within the next 48 hours otherwise it just goes to prove his lungs can't cope, even in 100% oxygen on full ventilation. So, we are praying that God helps him get stronger and especially for his little lungs and for help against the infection which is still raging.

Don't want to hijack this thread so will start a new one, please do go on talking about all your pregnancy concerns, it's great to have others going through similar things on here isn't it. I'm going to try the Bliss boards if this internet connection holds up. I'll keep popping back to see how you are all doing.

love Michaela

PS update - we have been in again and his NO is down to 10% with 60% O2 - hooray! slowly slowly reducing it to nil this time. Dont think I mentioned it but he was born on Friday 1st May, 2.34pm and once he stabilised he weighted only 620g and was 23cm including his hat.

iris66 · 05/05/2009 17:56

Tee Hope you enjoy your class At 1/2 lb weight gain per week in the last 2 months that'd give you an 8 1/2lb baby wouldn't it? ideal! (that's the weight I want mine at [iris is tired again and sniggers, slightly dementedly, at the thought of being able to request the size of her baby]

Tabitha - I did the whole shebang with ex DH when expecting DD1. HVs/MWs collectively (and erroneously) assumed I knew everything - including changes in policy and imms, when I got pg with DS1 17yrs later I did go on the hospital tour though which was interesting. I think that knowing to breathe through the contractions and panting when the baby crowns is important (especially for your birth partner to remember and remind you) but I believe that if you let go and try not to think too much when you're in labour you'll probably do it naturally anyway (and the MW will remind you too).

mrsb - Noooooooooo - go for the pole dancing - there's money to be made! There was a girl/woman (mum of 2) married to a guy at DH's work who pole danced in clubs for a living. Her DH was apparently v proud and used to show piccies of her in all her glory to the lads at work. Even paid for her to have a boob job to improve her career prospects .

iris66 · 05/05/2009 17:59

oh duchesse the poor little dot - it's sounding positive that they've been able to reduce the NO though will keep everything crossed for them x

johnworf · 05/05/2009 20:54

duchesse I'll look out for Michaela's new thread if she starts one. I understand much of what she has written. K never got to 60% O2 although there were babies in there who were on more than this. It sounds as though he might have sepsis or if not, there are many infections that babies pick up in those early days. K had sepsis at 2 days but it was played down so much that we only found out 2 days later when reading her notes.

His weight is about right for his weeks - K was 685g but was considered a 'good' weight due to my GD.

She's in for the long haul on this one but their lungs are so underdeveloped at that age that you just cannot make any predictions

I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed for this little man.

To add a note and I hope that she doesn't read this, the docs always gave us hope by saying that girls, in general, were stronger than boys but I hope, in this case, that he proves them wrong

jw nice new thread

very interested to read about baby's weight BF or FF.

thing that upsets me sometimes about these tables is that DS1 was born a big baby, tall and heavy. and he demanded a lot of milk. i breastfed him till he was 3 1/2 months old. he was quite fat until he started walking then he slimmed down. now he is nearly 5 and he is so slim that he can still wear his 2 yr old jeans. of course they are way too short now, so i cut part of the leg to make it into a groovy pair of summer jean shorts

my LO was also born big and tall for his age. he is now 16 weeks and is between 91 and 98th centile both height and weight. i breastfeed him during the day and at night he takes formula.

DH is a tall man while i am of average height

reading various stats and charts worry me. obviously i dont want my kids to grow up obese!

just wanted to share my feelings on this matter. i worry my LO is too big for his age.

jeanjeannie · 05/05/2009 21:53

Evening all.
Gosh duchesse poor little bean - his parents must be besides themselves. I find it so hard to believe it's almost a year ago that our thread was on constant alert with K. A few times I felt my heart was in my mouth waiting for news!

heron I shouldn't worry - there's a difference between fat and big/tall. Although I do think that the paranoia we all seem to suffer is a modern malaise that starts from the time your bump is measured Then it's weight and HV's addiction to charts. Then there is schools and testing....and so it goes on. It's like everything in life is a performance to be measured.....I'm not a fan. Common sense is much maligned.

Dinner went down like a lead balloon with Iris. She threw most of it on the floor in a fit of annoyance....although the home made potato and sweet potato chips did make it in her cake-hole

johnworf · 05/05/2009 22:13

JJ you mentioned that she probably wouldn't be eating the pork you made. Does she have an aversion to meat usually?

K scrapes everything off the dining table and onto the floor; food, mats, toys, spoons etc. She then peers over the side of the chair as if to say...how the bloody hell did that get there? I pick it up and so the game begins......

Trick du jour is squashing the sweetcorn/carrot puffs I bought onto her clothes/face/hands/table. Then scraping them off and rubbing them into whichever surface is closest. Weaning is such fun!

I refuse point blank to get embroiled in the chart paranoia. I've had this out with my HV already and I've said that I think she's doing fine. To me, to look at, she's fine. Mind you, did anyone see the 'underweight' baby on DM website that was born early and has to eat 3,000 calories a week to try and catch up? Her consultant has ordered this and she's eating stuff like olive oil and clotted cream. Madness!

JJ my advice is just give her what she wants............a greggs pastie followed by chocolate rolls and a bag of skittles.

I have to confess I wasn't aware of the fuss about weight and centiles and such. D hasn't been weighed since he was 2 months old and I wouldn't bother to get him weighed unless I was worried that he was too thin or too fat -which he doesn't look to be. Obesity is about a lot more than just bfing or ffing or the weight of a baby.

D eats all sorts of stuff at nursery - whatever they cook for lunch then pudding and today for his tea he ate a sausage sandwich They said he sucked the whole thing away! He wouldn't eat that at home.

Fingers crossed for that little man and his family.

D has a cold and has passed it on to me. Work is gonna be great tomorrow! Not.

Wonderwitch · 06/05/2009 05:41

Oh Ello, you have all moved lol

Good Morning fellow 40ers

iris66

The test results I'm presuming you mean for the protein in my urine?? I found out today, have to ring about lunchtime, will let you know, thanks for asking

Thats really interesting what you said about my ankle, i am going to ask to speak to a doc bout it today when I ring for results.. just incase, as it is still swollen and painful.

The only thing that worries me a bit when you say that is when had DS I had an ovarian cyst which had to be removed when I was 18 weeks PG, it was the size of a small water mellon apparently, an as I also have these period like pains, lower tummy and back, maybe I should ask for an early scan to put my mind at rest. I'm sure its all nothing though and I'm doing the usual mum to be worry wart thing

Hope everyone is ok today and you all have a brilliant day,

Love to all

xxXxx

Morning all

Well last nights class was half useful, have bull. The useful part was about normal labour. The bull part was physio. Only bull because I have had joint problems for most of my life, so it didn't really pertain to me! Only thing being pregnant is doing is making them worse.

duchesse oh, poor wee thing. I hope he pulls through. His poor parents. My due date thread has been relatively lucky, except for one still birth at around 25 weeks, which was bad enough. Everyone else seems to be headed to term, or close to it. We're all 33 - 36 weeks at this point.

mrsb according to all of my brothers and sisters, their kids always ate better for someone else. If they wanted to get the kids to eat, they'd invite our mother over. Grandma's cooking always got inhaled!!

I've spent my life with a weight obsessed mother. Even now, when I'm suppose to be gaining weight? I get lectured. So I have sworn I will not do that to my kids. I am not even concerned that little one is measuring a bit large in the womb. It will be what it is!!

johnworf · 06/05/2009 08:52

mrsb at least you can look at D eating everything at nursery (albeit not for you) and know that he will eat it for someone else and has a healthy appetite. It's just mummy and daddy he's got wrapped around his little finger to mess around

Most kids eat better for someone else. Mind you, I remember a friend of mine having DD#1 over when she was 5 or so and laughing when I came to pick her up....and told me she was the only kid she'd ever met that got excited over broccoli My philosophy was try and get as much variety into their diet from an early age and hopefully you won't end up with a faddy eater.

Did anyone see Madonna's crazy outfit y'day? What is she thinking?

I also note that Katona has put on a stone already...what's the betting this time next year she'll be back to her starting weight pre-surgery? All those pie, curry and chips obviously not helping either

JW should we expect to see young Kerry becoming the Face of Alli after a few tummy tucks, d'you think?

Wonderwitch I had protein in my urine a few weeks ago and it turned out I had an upper urinary tract infection. The only symptom was extreme fatigue - I could hardly lift a hairbrush and was in bed for a whole weekend, which is unheard of for me. I thought I was anaemic but 3 days of antiobiotics and bingo, I was back to normal. Hope yours either turns out to be nothing or can be cured quickly.

mrsb hope you're not coughing and sneezing at work today. My niece apparently eats everything they give her at nursery and only has bird-like amounts of a few limited things at home, but she seems to be full of energy and is always rushing about. Unless they're ill they seem to take what they need.

heron as JW says, those charts are sent to worry us. Look around at healthy well-proportioned children in a playground and you'll notice a huge variety of heights and body types, from sturdy to willowy. As long as your DC aren't carrying unnecessary fat, aren't painfully bony, and are active and happy, I wouldn't bother worrying at charts. Some people have to be at either end of them to give the range

Tabitha I'm with duchesse on the importance of breathing. It does sound weird, but the different stages of labour require different ways of dealing with, and to have a few pointers is very handy even if you don't do it 'by the book'. Also, a v useful mantra is 'wet open mouth = wet open vagina' . If you clamp up your jaw and don't breathe openly you'll clamp up Down Below...

Iris thank you for your kind comments. I thought it was important to say.

Tee Hello! /waves x

jeanjeannie · 06/05/2009 09:48

Morning all. Scooting out to a playgroup but I'd rather be under my duvet.

wonderwitch hope goes well with results - keep us posted

jw yep, Iris tends to only eat pork-based products Sausage, salami - all the things that are supposed to be bad. I think it's the Eastern European coming out in her! So, I thought minced pork (from a butchers - quality stuff) cakes would be good - but nah! She's NEVER eaten chicken...and lamb used to be a fave but foget it. Iris occasionally eats better elsewhere but unless it's sausages she won't eat at nursery either !!

ermintrude LOL@ Kerry being the face of Alli

Right - running late, although I think that's going to be the theme of the day!

heron22 · 06/05/2009 09:49

morning all! yea, throw away those bloody charts! as if us mums dont worry enough already!

wonderwitch hi, i had a tumour on my left ovary which i did not know about until i was preg with DS1. the doc thought it was a fibroid. until i was operated on at 5 months pregnant and found that it was actually a tumour! but benign thank God. how did the doc remove your ovarian cyst? not keyhole? mine was a c-section kind of surgery. horrible recovery time cos i could not take any painkillers

Wonderwitch · 06/05/2009 10:07

Hi heron22

I had full surgery, coz it was so big, got a scar from my belly button right the way down, the also thought mine was cancerous as it had grown so quickly, luckily it wasn't tho, they told me I had 85% chance of loosing baby but he's now a wonderful 20yr old

I was the same no pain relief, and I had to treat it like I had had a hysterectomy, wasn't allowed to anything at all for 3 mths, was a terrifying time to be honest, the I was advised I had to take it VERY easy for the rest of the PG.

I have got the doc phoning me back bout the pains I'm having, they are getting worse, more like contractions and a swollen ankle, just feeling pretty shite at the mo. Think I'm going to ask if I can have a scan asap as I am getting very worried now.

ermintrude13

I am so hoping thats all it is with me and it will be cleared up quickly, fed up of feeling so ill now, I want to enjoy this PG and I'm def not at the mo

Will keep you updated xxxXxxx

heron22 · 06/05/2009 11:48

wonderwitch my thoughts are with you. yes get a scan asap. is a obs/gyn looking after you?

Neddie · 06/05/2009 13:17

Hi all
Just popped in to say I'm fine and hope all had a good bank holiday. I am now 21 weeks and have discovered that I am having one of each, which is very efficient of DP but as you know he's German so they are supposed to be like that I think! Have also had one colt foal but the others are taking their time (please God let them all come out before mine do!)I feel well and the sun is shining what more could we ask for?
ps I am really massive now and such a long way to go still-they appear to be growing like normal babies (gulps...I had 2 eight and a half pounders last time surely not this time?)
Lots to do on the farm and around home as I am trying to get everything doen before I get soooo huge I can't move (next week then).

iris66 · 06/05/2009 13:26

Hi ladies

I've just dropped DS1 at preschool and am about to launch into making him some biscuits, then a pile of ironing. I seem to be playing catch up again today; trying to get everything, that I need to do, done before my sister arrives for the weekend.

ermintrude I'd completely forgotten about eh 'wide wet mouth' thing lol - a timely reminder! thanks

heron/wonderwitch - all I can say is ouch

wonderwitch - I hope you get/have had your scan today and that everything is ok. Given that the pain is continuing (and your previous history I think you're wise to get it thoroughly checked. Thinking of you.

hedgepig · 06/05/2009 13:42

Afternoon, I just managed a nice long post and then O deleted it for me, babaies are so helpful!

MrsB B always ate much better at nursery than at home. It came as such as shock when he went to school and I had to cook for him in the evening.

wonderwitch I hope you get some answers soon, and the pain stops.

Iris can I have some biscuits please.

I am trying to sort out our photo albums I am up to supper 2004 this is the problrm of digital cameras I just never get around to down loading and printing the photos.

iris66 · 06/05/2009 14:20

[iris wafts in bearing a tray of warm oat biscuits, a victoria sponge and large pot of tea]

help yourselves ladies

[wafts out again]

hedgepig · 06/05/2009 14:31

thank you you are a star

heron22 · 06/05/2009 15:07

iris thanks! that was delicious special the victoria sponge yum!!!

johnworf · 06/05/2009 15:38

hedgepig what happened in the supper of 2004?

Have been doing so many piddly jobs today, unaided by a baby that wakes up when I've just started a job. Very inconvenient these babies, I must say. I'm sure hedgepig will agree

K is doing her best to delete this post so I'll go until later and baby free.

Breathing it is, then, ladies. Thanks. Hadn't heard of the wide wet mouth, but I think that'll keep me smiling all the way through . Deep, slow breaths, presumably. I planned to scream through each contraction (not a girly, "there's a spider," scream, but more like a body builder lifting heavy weights). A loud voice can tend to drown out pain.
Tee glad you found some useful stuff at Parentcraft. Did you find a mix of ages?
All these stories about feeding babies - sounds like a right laugh to me. Shall I take the carpet up?
STOP PRESS someone I know is in labour as we speak. OMG.

johnworf · 06/05/2009 16:23

tabitha I found that it's best to go with the pain/contraction. I used to breathe my way into it and out of it again. Don't fight it is my motto...rather, ride it It's much more productive than fighting against it. Btw, screaming/grunting etc is wasted energy.

Well ladies, I'm most perplexed. I figured that I'd gone down a cup size after BF this time around so I ordered myself 2 cups down i.e. 38B. Anyhoo, bra came today (beautiful nude colour silk with black lace) and it's bloomin' baggy at the top of the cup. So, I googled how to measure your correct bra size and now I know why it's baggy...according to the calculations I'm a 38AA!!! How the f**k did that happen? I knew they'd gone flat, saggy and general yuck but lordy, how on earth am I going to find a bra of that weirdness?

I guess it'll be Ebay then

Off to cry into a cup of tea at my melting body.
