Hell, I've just found out I'm expecting No. 3 mid November, and am very excited. A bit scared too - I can't remember a thing! How can I possibly have done this twice already??? Hope more of you can join me soon!

grommit - when I looked them up on the internet, the rental charge for 1 month was £28! Didn't bother looking at the to buy price after that. Perhaps stripymouse will beable to tell you more. Have to agree with Monkey though, I think that if I did have one, I would become obsessed with listening to it, and then if I couldn't find a heartbeat, I'd end up worrying more. Haven't really got time with playing with one of these gadgets, my house is a tip as it is, and I've found the Gamecube to be a good distraction anyway (but easy to get obsessed with too!)

grommit · 03/06/2003 15:12

Stripeymouse - can you let me know details of your model? thanks!

Shari · 06/06/2003 21:22

Hi there I'm new to this site, wow what an eye opener!! I'm 16 weeks pregnant with my 2nd which is due on Nov 18th number one will be 23 months then, can't figure out if blessed or nuts just now though!!

1stimer · 06/06/2003 21:37

Hi Shari, welcome to mumsnet, I've only been posting for a couple of weeks but it can be fun/informative and just nice to share...I am 18 weeks with my first one, scared and excited all in one.

StripyMouse · 06/06/2003 21:56

grommit - it is by a company called UltraTec and the model is a PD1 - their cheapest and most basic doppler fetal heart monitor. It runs off a simple 9v battery (came included - nice change) and has it?s own little carrycase with the contact gel supplied and a leaflet on how to find a heart beat. I just put "doppler" into the ebay search engine and came up with a few options. the guy I bought it iff was called Thomas Lensing (Ultrasound Technologies - a Greman company but he is based in England). From his write up he had almost 100% positive ratings from loads and loads of couples raving about the monitors - the reviews helped convince us it was worth it. Buying off ebay worked out a lot cheaper than from the company direct for some reason and this bloke seems to sell in batches of 8 a week via ebay last time I looked. Fast service too - ordered on a Thursday, arrived on the Monday. Hope that helps. Prices start from around £95 - £150 for brand new models - pricey but we think it was worth the price of three shirts and plan to sell it on afterwards anyway.

Hi Shari - welcome to mumsnet. I am also about 18 weeks (due 11th Nov) and it is my second - I think we must all be a llittle bit crazy to go through the sleepless nights and leaky boobs again...still it will all be worth it in the end...think positive...

Oops - meant to say 17 weeks - getting ahead of myself again! Will stop posting now. Promise.

1stimer · 06/06/2003 22:04

Hi Stripymouse, how is it going with baby beat, my friend borrowed the one I have and baby kicked at it!, asked the midwife and she said that it can be quite noisy for the little ones in there, but I guess it would be the same if you stood next to speakers!
On saying that I have used mine twice it is great for reassurrance and nice way to get dp involved in baby at this early stage when I can feel movements but dp cant feel them yet, and doesn't it give you such a nice warm feeling when you hear the heartbeat

1stimer · 06/06/2003 22:08

Oh is it only 17 weeks?, I'm due 9th Nov I guess I'm getting ahead of my time also!....have suddenly started growing thou, belly seems to be bigger by the day!

StripyMouse · 06/06/2003 22:11

1stimer - i love it - such a good buy. Not sure if my doppler is based on similar technology to the babybeat but I hadn?t thought about the noise factor for the baby. Still, once or twice a day isn?t too bad. I know what you mean about the kicking - my midwife pointed out the kicking noise last time she listened in and it is such a great noise to hear! I have also felt a few movements and teeny tiny kicks but hearing them makes it even more real esp. for my dh who gets such a kick (ho ho, sorry lame joke) out of listening in and identifying the noises. Hope you are ok and coping well - you seem positive and upbeat - good on yer!

I know what you mean about the stomach thing - my sister bluntly said to me today - "ooh - you are really podging out now aren?t you!" - charming. I was momentarily put out but I guess she is right - I am "podging" out all over the place and have a very definite bump. Just hope that my bump gets less wobbly and firmer as it gets bigger and stops merely pushing out my wobbly bits!

1stimer · 06/06/2003 22:18

It does sound like the one you have is slightly different.
Thanks for asking am feeling good actually, I guess with all that has happened it makes me realise life is too short anyway so positive thinking all the way, got issues at work at mo but again all insignificant compared to bringing a new life into the world. I am getting more and more excited about the little one, as its morning on this side of the world, I'm heading off to town soon as there is a closing down sale at a childrens boutique- ooh flash I know, so it will be my first real baby shop Have avoided it until now so I thought I would treat myself a little bit. How's things with you?

StripyMouse · 08/06/2003 17:08

1stimer - glad to see you are ok and hope you enjoyed your shopping spree. We are in the middle of trying to sort out my 2yr olds bad sleeping habits and it is leaving us all grumpy and a bit out of sorts but otherwise I am good thanks. I am starting to feel my bump move much more frequently which is lovely. My dh is so keen to be able to feel the movement himself but I guess he will need to wait a few weeks yet - doesn?t stop him trying constantly though, poor thing. All I need now is some decent sleep and I will be top of the world...

Rachael17 · 12/06/2003 12:29

great news
my b/f wants to be there at the birth i was so worried he wudnt want to be
also both sides of the family all know now and most friends so huge weight of my shoulders i felt like i was lying to everyone
getting very good reactions considering my age and a few friends are even gonna throw me a baby shower i cant wait!! all baby clothes make me get emotional

StripyMouse · 13/06/2003 10:12

Rachael17 - that is brilliant news. i am so happy that you are finding a good support network around you, believe me you will need it and often at the most unexpected times over the next few months.
If your bf is keen to attend the birth, do encourage him to attend some of your antenatal sessions to meet the mw and listen to the heartbeat etc. It is also important that he attends your antenatal classes to help prepare him. To be honest, not much can prepare you for attending the birth of your first child (according to my dh) but the classes can help a little bit, particularly watching a full video of a birth, going round a labour ward and being aware of pain relief, birthing positions, possible complications etc. The more you can get him to feel involved beforehand, the more he will feel able to cope when the time comes. My husband found my labour very emotional and even quite horrific - however, he wouldn?t have missed it for the world. He is a calm, parcatical guy in his thirties who copes well in a crisis and still found it very daunting and difficult at times. I am not trying to panic you as i am delighted he wants to be there, just trying to warn you that he might need a bit of "work" preparing him so that he can cope with it all and, by coping, he can give you the support you will need and deserve.
Have you had a scan yet? Sorry - can?t remember! I imagine you have one in a few weeks and strongly suggest you take him along if possible - it is such a wonderful and emotional moment seeing your baby looking like a little baby for the first time. A great way to help him (and you) bond as a family.

StripyMouse · 13/06/2003 10:13

parcatical?!! sorry - practical! Spelling up the creek.

M2T · 13/06/2003 10:16

Great news Rachael! You must be about 17 weeks now?? Are you getting a wee bump now?

I was 17 weeks pregnant when I started to feel the baby move. And I heard his heartbeat during my gp appointment. It was wonderful!!

Enjoy the next 3 months coz this is by far the best stage of pregnancy. No nausea, loads of energy, a nice neat bump..... savour every moment!

Rachael17 · 14/06/2003 07:32

p.s im 16.5 weeks and next scan is mid july cant wait as will be b/f's first chance to see the baby!!

whellid · 16/06/2003 16:48

Had my 20 week scan today - seems to have flown by this time - and it's a boy! Really glad as that's what I wanted (already have a ds) and had told everyone that I was sure it was a boy. All seemed fine, and we have some great scan pictures. Ds still totally uninterested!

chanelno5 · 17/06/2003 14:03

Great news, Whellid. Have got my 20 wk scan next week. Thought of any names yet?

whellid · 17/06/2003 14:08

Thanks Chanelno5. No names yet, but at least we can focus on just one sex! I'm hopeless with names and find a reason against all of them. Took ages with ds, and even then we weren't sure. I've had lots of disapproving comments about wanting to find out the sex, but once you know everyone else wants to know too!
Hope the scan goes well next week, everyone (in the UK) must be coming up for them now I suppose.
