Support thread for those with hyperemesis/bad ms

I know that there are a few of us struggling on here with hyperemesis. Anyone fancy joining a support thread?

A little about me...

I'm 10 weeks pg with dc2 and am on stemetil for the constant sickness. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Today is a bad day. I can cope with the HG but I do get a bit irate when people tell me about their 'miracle cure' as if I haven't already tried everything

My sympathys are with you, I suffered this with both my pregnancies and at the time I felt very alone and that I was over reacting and 'doing it wrong' when others around me were 'blooming' i was the only one losing weight, I was down to six stone with the first one. I think its a great idea to form a network of support I only wish I had had one! no miracle cure except have something very small to eat before even attempting to get out of bed in the morning, a tiny piece of cracker anything as low blood sugar really doesnt help. I know it sounds odd but someone told me to have a plate of sliced lemon next to me and before attempting to eat anything sniff it or suck it a little I still cant work out why it worked but it did (slightly) then really try to get some goodness into yourself veg soups, very small amounts little and often. Lots of love and I hope it doesnt last too long. I seem to remember there was a book written about hyperemisis I will try to remember the title it had a few things to try in it, no miracle cure but it did help me deal with the feelings of being the only one like it.

My sympathies - I've had it twice and I literally felt as though I was dying right until delivery both times. Nothing can fix it (IMO) and I'm really sorry you are suffering. It's the majority of the reason why I'm not having any more children.

I'm sorry you are having such an awful time. I had hideous morning sickness with my first pregnancy. It was truely hellish and I had a horrible human resources lady who didn't believe that morning sickness existed. For me the only cure was actually giving birth.

Although it probably not much consolation to you. In spite of being sick about 5 to 10 times a day during my first pregnancy from 9 weeks until I got to 36 weeks, I have got to 11 weeks with this pregnacy and I have not yet thrown up.

I am really scared that I am tempting fate now.

Have you tried acupuncture?
Am 7 weeks nad have been sick for the last 3 having a horrible time. Had 2 sessions of acupuncture last week which has helped. It is definitely worse this time than with my DS. Before I had acupuncture with my first pregnancy I was so miserable and could have quite easily strangled any midwife who said ' try ginger biscuits'. As far as I was concerned everyone could shove ginger biscuits/ginger tea/ ginger cake and seabands cos none of it worked.
So many people you tell about MS tell you that 'they were absolutely fine and never had it'. like that helps!
Soory to sound cross because we are just supposed to grin and bear it - I think it is the worst thing that a well person can have.
Even now when I am 50% better than last week I spend my day retching and belching.

Hurry up 2nd trimester.

Well said, WobblyPig! I would like to try acupuncture but not sure where to go to try it in Southampton. My MIL is a medical acupuncturist who normally does my treatments but she lives 200 miles away.

Really sorry for you. Suffered with all 4 of my pregnancies, actually hospitised with 2nd. 1st & 2nd were the worse with sickness lasting on and off all the way through, 3rd and 4th were better or I had developed techniques to cope better. Stemetil did work for me quite well. It's what they don't tell you about that I found difficult - I suffered from excessive saliva which I found difficult to swallow as it made me sick!

For what it's worth I found that letting an ice cube melt in my mouth helped a bit - well it got fluid down ! When I was in hospital they were recommending "flat" coke for rehydrating but it's very "clawing" even when sipped.

It is a dreadful time and termination did cross my mind when I was at my lowest (and it can make you extremely depressed) but it will end eventually.

It does help if people around you are supportive - fortunately (or unfortunately) my mother suffered really badly aswell so both she and my dad were very helpful to me, helping with my younger children when I was in no position to do so.

Don't ask me why I ended up having 4 kids when I felt as bad as I did (all boys BTW which could have been the reason for my sickness).

Sorry to hear about your sickness Swaliswan, it is horrible (I had it hyperemesis first time round, in hospital twice for rehydration)

I was going to have 4 children but stopped at 2 because I could not physically or mentally risk going through that experience again.

Hope you have some better days soon. Hugs for you if you accept them, otherwise ignore my last sentence.

Re: acupuncuturist .Try yellow pages or ask around at GPs- sometimes have post-it board. Enlightened midwives might know. It's not particularly comfortable but nothing compared to MS IMO.
If you can travel the 200miles I would- its good to have someone you trust. I would have travelled to the Artic circle I think.

Can I join you? Bit about me:
First preg. MS started at 6 weeks, got progressively worse as weeks went by. By 11 I was being properly sick and up to 5 times a day. I went to the doctor who said I had ketones and was dehydrated. Gave me metoproclamide as the alternative to admitting me to hospital [hadn't been able to eat and had lost a stone and a half].

Took the pills for a week and they reduced the vomiting, but was still throwing up once or twice a day. Plus they were making me feel really depressed, tired and restless, so this Sat I decided to stop taking them. Had a great weekend, felt much better and was only sick once in the morning. I also got some ginger root capsules from the health food shop and started taking two a day, so not sure if that was why I improved.

However, yesterday, had a really bad day again. Threw up five times and nothing would stay down. Even threw up the ginger capsule which was pretty yucky. And them couldn't bring myself to take another one.

So, to today. I am now officially in the second trimester (14 weeks today) so I really hope I start to get better now. Many people say 16 weeks or 20 weeks is when you get that magical turn around so I am clinging to that with dear life!

Cosmo, I think that we have met on a previous thread which seems to have dropped off so I thought that I'd start a proper support thread. I'm so sorry that you are having such a hard time. When I was pg with DD, things did get quite a lot better when I was 16 weeks but I'm hoping that it might happen soonder this time!

Lollipop, I've already told DH that I'm not sure that I can face having a DC3 anymore. I'm not surprised that you decided to stop at DC2.

Yep think we have crossed paths on a previous thread. Think it is a great idea to have a support thread running though, as there must be lots of us feeling like this and it is nice to know you're not alone.
I hope it does get better at 16 weeks - that would be amazing! Not sure at the moment if I could go through this again. Guess I won't know until it is all over and I look back on it. I would definitely need a strong support system around me to even consider it again, esp with a LO to care for too. Tho I have a friend who had terrible sickness to 20 weeks with no 1, she is now preg a second time and hasn't been ill at all - so there's just no rhyme or reason to it.

Hope your day isn't too bad. I haven't been sick [yet] and it is nearly 11am, which is unusual for me. I have also just eaten what my body was telling me to [one pain au chocolat and two toasted scotch pancakes with butter]. Will see if it all manages to stay down! I am getting to that point where I just feel like saying 'to hell with the sickness' I will eat what I want and if I throw up then so be it.

Big sympathies to everyone going through this at the moment.

I had hyperemesis at the beginning of this pregnancy - from roughly weeks 6-16, tailing off towards 20 weeks-ish. It was one of the most horrendous experiences of my life. I couldn't eas a thing, could barely hold down water some days, was hospitalised, got ill with cystitis and tonsilitiis because I was so rundown and dehydrated, got incredibly bad constipation because when I could eat I only wanted white toast and pastries and Coke...God, it was grim.

I didn't go down the medication route as I've had a miscarriage in the past and am completely paranoid about taking meds. All I can say is, thank God it passed fairly quickly.

hello, all, I am 17 and a bit weeks pregnant and was SO ill this time (3rd) and both others actually

but I am feeling so much better - have gone from feelign sick ALL day and night, retching, pucking to feeling a lot better and I reckon it started about 15/16 weeks.....

carrying a lemon to dig nail in and sniff did seem to help me a bit when was at my worst, hope it passes for you soon

if it is of interest, my m sickness went like this:

dd - 5 weeks - 14 weeks (puking about twice a day. felt sick constantly)
ds - 5 weeks - 22 weeks ish (puked 8-10 times a day, off sick loads, very poorly)
this one - 6 weeks - 16 weeks (somewhere in-between 1st and 2nd pregnancies in terms of pukiness)

CAn I just ask has anyone tried cyclizine? Im suffering really badly MS, First tried metaclopromide (sp) which didn't work now tried this for the first time yesterday. I took 2 tablets yesterday, nothing today and I feel quite odd- kind of spacey and tired. Has anyone else had those side effects?

Hi Stary, not tried Cyclazine but I found metaproclamide made me really drowsy, restless and depressed. Only took it for a week then stopped because of the side effects.

Welcome and thank-you to everyone posting for the first time. Many sympathies to everyone having a bad day. I made my DD cry this morning when she saw me throw up for the first time. I always try to hide from her when I'm sick because she is only 16 months but didn't manage it today

Staryeyed, I have had cyclazine in the past for another cause of sickness and was so glad when it became clear that I was allergic to it! I was in hospital having cyclazine injections which are the most painful injection I've ever had. I found that it made me more sick, paranoid and it gave me a horrible rash. There are some areas in the UK that use cyclazine as a first-line treatment for HG but I think that is mainly because it is a cheap alternative to some other anti-emetics and it isn't known to cause problems (however, at the moment it isn't one of the two that are licenced for use in pg but this is such a minefield that most doctors don't worry about that).

I'm not pg at the mo, but have suffered from HG in the past. It is just horrific, so my sympathies to all of you feeling ill, and I hope that it starts easing up soon.

staryeyed I have tried Cyclizine - it was horrible. Like you I felt really spacey but also really anxious and agitated. Didn't take it for long, just a few days. It knocked me out the first time I took it (presume it was the Cyclizine as feel asleep for a couple of hours in the daytime- not really like me ). Hope things improve for you soon x

Im so happy to find out I'm normal and not alone! Been finding the last 7 weeks really hard. Never been on a chat site before no idea how it works but here goes. I feel like I am really lucky after hearing how bad you have all been. I have been signed off work for 4 weeks, Im a secondary teacher and realy feel I should go back. My lessons have not been covered properly and I feel so guilty for the kids sake.
Im now 11 weeks and do get the odd good day, but then my hopes fade as it gets worse again.
Im only being sick about 3 times a day, but have been constantly feeling sick. Does not seem to any difference what I eat, have been trying plain stuff so its not so bad when it comes back up. The doctor has given me metoclopramide and cyclizine they dont seem to do much except make me sleepy and feel out of it.
Just recently I have been feeling better late morning early afternoon but I start feeling shivery and really sick at about 2 or 3. I have no energy and doing anything that invovles moving around seems to make me worse. I keep getting really bad acid that burns my throat when I'm sick, and makes it really sore have been taking anti acid stuff but does not do a lot.

I have written too much! but so good to hear about other people that feel the same. Just feel like crying all the time and wish it would go away!
