I know that there are a few of us struggling on here with hyperemesis. Anyone fancy joining a support thread?

A little about me...

I'm 10 weeks pg with dc2 and am on stemetil for the constant sickness. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Today is a bad day. I can cope with the HG but I do get a bit irate when people tell me about their 'miracle cure' as if I haven't already tried everything

I feel sooooooo depressed. Have just got out of hospital for the second time today. Don't know what to do with myself. I feel awful and nothing makes me feel better.

Littlemisskiwi · 21/11/2008 01:24

bettybomb and hayleybootes

I feel so much for both of you and everyone else still suffering with HG.

I had it bad earlier on in my pregnancy and think i might be through the worst and getting better at 23+5 weeks. I take maxalon every morning and am coping, even having some days where I feel bouyant and happy.

All I can say is that from reading other threads with similar topics, those who were sick all the way through say it all goes away with the birth. Hang in there, you are doing an amazing job.

hayleybootes · 25/11/2008 13:44

I can't handle the nausea and the vomiting, It's too hard, It's hurting soooooooo much and I've quit all the medication because it was making me feel worse! When will it end???? I'm losing money too from not being able to go to work, so stress on top of everything else is not good! How's everyone else?

kayme · 25/11/2008 20:28

Hi all it continues! I?m pleased to say I?m seeing an improvement have managed to go back to work in the afternoons. Being signed off in the morning, still being sick every couple of days and still feeling sick morning and evening but its getting better. If your bad get your doctor to sign you off then your work legally has to pay you, I?m a teacher didn?t even think it was possible to have the mornings off. Was signed off all day for about 7 weeks. I?m 19 weeks now my stomach muscles are still really sore, hurts to stand, cough, and even wee! are you guys finding that? Trying to do up my new house and did too much at the weekend. The midwife said I?m not supposed to lift any more than 7 pounds, but finding it hard.
my moan, Live in a flat, brought up the light shopping, asked my husband to bring up the heavy bags when he got home, but he said why cant you do it! So I did it anyway, I hate having to ask other people to do things always been strong and independent. I always thought he would be supportive, has been really good but think he has run out of sympathy now. Just want to enjoy being pregnant so far is a bit crap! Makes me frustrated!!!!

But positive note for all those that are really bad, there is some hope. I do feel better compared to 15 weeks when i was in hospital, but it did really help. I recommend to anyone if your getting weak go to hospital I was in for 4 days they said I should have gone in sooner. But it helped me get my meds sorted and gave me a needed boost.

Take care all, big hug you will get through it.
xxx

hayleybootes · 01/12/2008 18:49

Hello!! 9 weeks now and feeling a lot better than I was. The nausea is still there 24-7 but the vomiting is now only all morning! I do have to eat every 2 hours though which is a pain when you don't fancy any food!! I feel sorry for everyone going through this, I hope everyone gets better really soon x

hayleybootes · 10/12/2008 12:38

I spoke too soon. 10 weeks and feeling horrific. I had a few good days and presumed it was getting better, no such luck! It doesn't help that i've got a bad cold, sore throat and am aching all over!
I'm just praying that it doesn't last the whole way through, the depression is too much!!

minouminou · 11/12/2008 22:32

I'll join!
I'm 22 weeks now, and it's pretty much gone, but at its height i was pole-axed by nausea, constant retching, and, when I managed to eat anything, vomming - say 5X a day, even with anti-emetics.
Poor DS (2) used to hunch over the toilet making "hhhhuuueerergggrggrgghhhhh" noises, thinking he was being all grown up like mummy.
Yeahhhhh....ginger biscuits - shove 'em up yer arris.
One friend really pissed me off with her bloody "Mmmmmm, well....I don't know if you believe this, but it's SUPPOSED to be a sign of a healthy pregnancy" (in the same tone of voice, as if i should just stop feeling sorry for myself and be grateful) EVERY time I (had to) explain how bad i felt/how many times i'd been sick that day
Yeah right, because I'm so crippled with neurosis that chucking and feeling like death all the time is a blessed reassurance.
Thankfully, my GP is fab. I called the surgery, he called me back, i said "I'm on the vomit comet again" (had HG with DS), and he sorted me with some Buccastem.
I lost 3 kilos in a couple of weeks (and I don't have much to spare).
So, yeah....advice, rants, sympathy etc.....i can dish it out if needs be.

Littlemisskiwi · 12/12/2008 04:37

Hey

I'm nearly 27 weeks now and would like to say the sickness is pretty much gone, but I am generally sick on Monday and Thursday mornings, weird.

Just wondered if those of you who have experienced HG before found you continued to be tired and worn out throughout the pregnancy if the HG went away?

Oh yeah, and ginger frigging biscuit advise from well meaning friends is so bloomin' annoying!

minouminou · 12/12/2008 14:09

ban ginger nuts
just ban them
this advice generally comes from people who've been a "bit queasy, but i was never actually sick"
i find even now, if i'm tired i feel a bit more sick than usual
also, we've all had a bit of a cough, and it doesn't take much for a mild bout of coughing to turn into retching
thankfully, though, i'd say i'm being sick once a week now, which is heaven

Cosmogirl · 12/12/2008 19:08

Can we ban crackers as well as ginger nuts please?

SwalisWantsaPeacefulChristmas · 12/12/2008 21:18

The most annoying advice I had was 'just eat' as I would 'feel so much better if I just ate'. Now, maybe that does help for normal MS, but trying to explain that it doesn't matter what or how much I eat, it all comes back up took a lot of self control

minouminou · 12/12/2008 23:32

Oh, and people who think your anti-emetics are thalidomide and shout at you in horror.
That was a good one.
ban them, as well.

Littlemisskiwi · 15/12/2008 01:02

Grrr, I spoke too soon

I was sick on Saturday morning and exhausted all day. The weekend was a bit of a wash out. I'm so tired of being pregnant. My hips hurt. I don't know what or when to eat and hope the next 13 weeks pass quckly.

I'm also a bit scared of being sick during labour and running out of energy... any experience of this anyone?

Astrophe · 15/12/2008 02:46

Hi everyone. I am 9 almost 9 weeks with number 3 and feeling seriously crappy too.

I was sick 5 times a day for a while, but the last few days have been a bit better, with constant sickness but no vomiting. Today I am feeling particularly horrible though.

The worst thing for me is the constant floods of saliva, which, when I swallow, make me feel even more sick and really bloated and gassy too. Does anyone else get this?

I do find some smells really set me off, but clean smells like lemon or peppermint are refreshing and seem to help just a tiny bit.

I the mornings I can't keep anything down at all except for milk with Milo. It is made by Nestle unfortunately, which I normally don't buy, but its a vitamin drink, and qite filling, so a great thing to drink nutrition wise, if nothing else will stay down.

Here is Aus the GPs seem extremely reluctant to give any meds, so even 5 pukes a day did not convince them I needed anything

stiefyloo · 16/12/2008 22:45

Hi, I'm 13 wks with number 4 and have had HG with each of my pregnancies. How is everyone coping with preparing meals for partners and/or kids? Find am spending my whole day worrying about it. Also, can someone please promise me that this will go away at some point?! Have felt so ill for so long, find it hard to believe I will ever feel well again.

Astrophe · 16/12/2008 23:24

Congrats on number 4 - I want 4, but ca't imagine having another after this one...I just hate being pregnant.

I guess try to take it one day at a time. When did it stop with your last 3 pregnancies? I had a cuddle with a friends 3 month old yesterday, and it was lovely t be reminded of the 'prize' at the end of this horrible time.

hayleybootes · 17/12/2008 14:04

11+4 now, came out of hospital after 4 days of IV fluids and a whole concoction of different drugs to try to stop me being/feeling sick. Whilst there they found out I was allergic to Maxalon and Stemetil, they made me lose the plot, so I was frightened of any new medication they gave me. As soon as the vomiting stopped I had a migraine and the vomiting began again!! Great!! I had 12 bags of fluid and I still had 4+ Ketones!! Hell!!
One of the midwives told me I was being so brave as most women with hyperemesis have a termination because it's just too difficult to cope. I think they've had enough of me being there!!
Yes, ban Ginger biscuits, ginger tea, crackers, and people that say 'just eat little and often and you'll be fine' !!!!!!!

hayleybootes · 04/01/2009 17:59

I hope everybody had a good xmas. I am still sick and have had enough of it now. Have got to go back to work tomorrow after being off work for 7 weeks, am still not well enough but am going into no pay in January and I can't survive on nothing!!! When does it get any better?!!

Cosmogirl · 04/01/2009 19:10

Hi Hayley, I found I noticed improvements at 16 weeks, then again at 21 weeks. Up until 16 I could barely move, speak, eat etc I think it is different for everyone but 16 and 20 seem to be turning points for a lot of people. However, those who said 12 weeks were no help to me as I felt really dreadful between 11-15 weeks.

I am now 28 weeks and vomiting has pretty much stopped but am unfortunately suffering from nausea all day everyday - worse in the evenings. It is helped by the eating little and often thing that everyone recommended in the early weeks but did no good then.

Hope it gets better for you and you don't get stuck with it for the whole 9 months - it really takes a lot of the joy out of being pregnant and for me that took a long time to come to terms with. Now, I realise I am just in that unlucky 2 per cent who get it until the end and I am counting down the days until the birth and getting to meet my baby.

HeftyMutha · 07/01/2009 19:53

Hello all!

Good to know I'm not alone. I had horrible hyperemesis from weeks 8 to 18 - puking several times a day, unable to even drink water let alone eat on some days, and vomiting so much that my throat was sore from regurgitated stomach acid on some days.

Am now 30 weeks and have had a miraculous week of managing without my trusty bottle of cyclizine. Personally, I was very grateful for cyclizine - it seemed to break the endless vomiting cycles by stabilising my stomach, and the drowsiness was a welcome relief from shivering over the toilet and puking. I often went to sleep with a bucket by the bed and puked when the cyclizine wore off!

Hang on in there, girls - we're not alone. My sympathies and best wishes for everyone on this thread - REALLY hope you get some relief soon. xx

Littlemisskiwi · 08/01/2009 00:03

Sorry ladies, i need a little rant to vent my frustration.
I'm so fed up with being sick every morning. It seems to have come back again. Even when I take maxalon at 6.00am to try and empty the bile/ stomach acid, and have something to eat (a nutrition shake) when it is time to get up at 7.30 I puke. I shiver and shake and feel foul, then don't feel like eating but know I have to.
It has been getting worse over the last three weeks. I'm 30 + 4 now so I know it isn't too much longer. But I am so anxious that it might not go away when baby is born, that I might not have the energy to deliver baby naturally and that I am failing to be pregnant successfully.
I've had acupuncture earlier on, am going to try a homoeopath next week.
God I hope it gets better. I can't think of anything worse than being at home on Mat Leave and feeling like a wimpy pathetic wretch on the sofa for six weeks on my own.
It is so tiring and wears you out completely.

People still suggest dry crackers or just shrug thinking it can't be that bad as I continue to grown and baby gets bigger.

Astrophe · 08/01/2009 11:32

oh, just wated to offer my sympathies littlemisskiwi and everyone else. Isn't the worst thing the fact that people think "Its just morning sickness...can't be so bad". I keep trying to make people get it, saying "Imagine you have an awful stomach bug, feel exhausted, weak from vomiting, sick...now imagine it lasts for months"...but people don't get it really.

I am 12 weeks now, and thankfully, have noticed a very gradual improvement over the last few weeks. Still have dreadful days, and at least a few awful hours a day, even on a 'good' day. My mouth is always full of foul tasting saliva and by evening I am so bloated from swallowing it...yerk, so disgusting.

But I am so thankful that for me it is bad MS, not HG. Really hoping that we all improve over the next few weeks.

Littlmiss, try not to worry about how you will fell once baby is out. You will feel tired, but it will be a completely different type of tired, and you will feel so much better for it I'm sure.

hayleybootes · 08/01/2009 20:43

Everybody has my sympathies, it's an awful thing to have to go through. I feel so exhausted all the time now but at least I do have a few hours each day now where it isn't as bad as it was. I find the feeling sick much worse than the being sick. At least when I am sick I feel better for a couple of minutes after but the nausea is always there!!
I find a lot of people keep saying to me 'I had that in my pregnancy, I was sick every morning'. No one really understands HG, but it's one of the worst illness's ever!!
I'm not taking any meds anymore as I got bad side affects on all of them. Maxalon was the worst, my whole body took on a mind of it's own, it was as if i'd have a stroke or something. Stemetil made me feel weird too. I got horrific headaches with Phenergan and Cyclizine makes me be sick!!! The last meds I had were Domperidone, has anyone else had these? They speed up your digestion so you don't have food in your stomach for very long. That was horrible because I felt hungry all the time and when I feel hungry, I feel sick!!
So if anyone knows of any other meds I can convince my doctor to give me, let me know please!!
Get well soon everyone xxxxx

HeftyMutha · 13/01/2009 08:50

Have you heard of something called "ondansetron"? That's meant to be worth a try, but I don't think doctors routinely prescribe it in the UK. Google it and see what you think...

I quite agree that severe MS, and hyperemesis, are quite a lot more than just "I feel a bit sick and I throw up every so often". It takes over your life, and you feel so sick all the time that you can't think straight or function like a normal human being.

Something I've heard, that will hopefully be a consolation to readers of this thread, is that even if you have hyperemesis all the way through the pregnancy, almost the minute you give birth, you feel miles better. Just knowing that your nausea and discomfort will have an end might help. You can get yourself through it one day, or one puke at a time, while telling yourself that you won't feel like this for the rest of your life!

Cosmogirl · 14/01/2009 10:08

Hi ladies,

Hefty - great to hear that many hyperemesis sufferers feel instantly better once they have given birth. I am still suffering with really bad nausea at 30 weeks and it is so draining...

Anyone who has been through it, how did you find the birth experience? Was it easy compared to the nine months that had gone before? Were you relieved that the end had finally come? Also, how far afterwards did your eating get back to 'normal'? Sorry, lots of questions, but as a first timer I am quite curious as to how things will be post-pregnancy.
