Is one large glass of wine every other night whilst pg ok, or not?

and if your friend was drinking this much, would you say something, or not?

obviously the odd glass isn't a huge risk, however it is well known that regular drinking does stunt babies' growth, physically and mentally. Do some research, any poison (which alcohol is, just like nicotine) is harmful.

Anyway it appears we will agree to disagree.

ps however, there is water-tight evidence to prove that 2 bottles of wine a night is required once you do have chilfren.hic

i'll stick to my sources and you stick to yours - again is it worth the risk? That's the real point. Is drinking alcohol regularly that important?

Monkeytrousers · 04/07/2008 20:38

StealthPB, it is every other night.

ohh, the hallmark of the shaky argument - start letting fibs!

Monkeytrousers · 04/07/2008 20:39

sorry, unconscious dilexia crept in - telling fibs

star6 · 04/07/2008 20:44

aspartame is just as bad as alcohol in my opinion... and there IS research to say how horrible that is!!!

marmalady · 04/07/2008 20:47

'official' advice on this is pants imo as is based on no evidence whatsoever but rather the assumption that women can't understand that heavy drinking during pregnancy isn't a good idea.

and i didn't drink during mine but ONLY cause i didn't feel like it.

Heathcliffscathy · 04/07/2008 20:51

am totally with you starlight.

marmalady · 04/07/2008 21:04

STARLIGHT high blood pressure can also damage one's health

Natalie1984 · 04/07/2008 21:05

i say u its ok to have a glass or 2 from time to time but not regularly but its ur baby and ur body so its up to u hun, people shouldnt pass judgemant on u

StealthPolarBear · 04/07/2008 21:09

MT you are right, and that wasn't a typo I did completely overlook the word 'other'. So she's probably drinking on average a unit per day?
Hmm...I still think that's a lot and more than I would personally choose to drink when pg but it's a lot more acceptable to me.

Saymyname · 04/07/2008 21:21

"the truth is there is no risk"

And what evidence and research do you have to back up that statement?

Starlight, you don't know for a fact that there's no risk. That's the bottom line, you choose to believe that there is no risk, and that obviously works for you. You cannot prove it.

fishie · 04/07/2008 21:30

starlight, good work. i hate this subject a lot, so much patronising illinformed smuggery.

at the more extreme end, at work the other day i saw a heavily pregnant young woman smoking (outside) and there was much judging by passersby. but she has stopped using crack and heroin for her pg so the occasional fag is a brilliant result.

You don't know for a fact starlight, you choose to believe it. Just as I choose to believe that the woman in the OP drinking around 12 units a week could be putting her baby at risk.

Heathcliffscathy · 04/07/2008 21:54

on what basis? there is NO evidence for it despite lots of people looking for it. which bit of that don't you understand?

Heathcliffscathy · 04/07/2008 21:54

i don't know for a fact that talking a lot doesn't harm my baby either. gah.

Monkeytrousers · 04/07/2008 21:58

One glass every other night is not your problem. I think people may be projecting their own stuff on to this, which is another issue all together. The woman the OP is talking about is an adult and is an individual. If you have problems deal with them personally. If she were a coke addled prosser, you might have room to manouvure, but she isn't. If this issue has moved on from the op fair enough, but I am fighting this poor woman's corner, who is doing nothing wrong, expet in peoples imaginations

Heathcliffscathy · 04/07/2008 21:59

agreed monkey.

Monkeytrousers · 04/07/2008 21:59

..and thank god we live in a liberal democracy where the only thing ruined in this is a (probably quite tenous already) friednship

Saymyname · 04/07/2008 22:01

According to Starlight it is actually very difficult to drink enough to cause FAS. But according to the FAS aware site:

"Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is the biggest cause of non-genetic mental handicap in the western world and the only one that is 100% preventable. Approximately 2200 children are born each year in Germany with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. The number of children born each year without the physical anomilies but with mental retardation and behavioural problems is offically calculated to be between 10,000 and 15,000 a year in Germany alone."

Clearly not as difficult as you claim then.

I know the debate here isn't as to whether 12 units a week would cause FAS - but Starlight you seem absolutely determined to downplay the effects of alcohol on unborn babies.
