I've just found out my daughter is 7 weeks pregnant, she wants to keep the baby as she has Endometriosis which can affect her fertility.
This pregnancy was unplanned and she lives at home with me and her dad, we both work and own our own home and never claimed a benefit in our life.

We have no idea what she is entitled to benefits wise as a single mum and I'm hoping you can put me in the right direction.

Also, do we need to go to the doctors first to get proof that she is pregnant? Please help we have no idea

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Why is benefits the first thought?

Why is it the first assumption that OP is only after benefits ?

She needs an urgent risk assessment at work to see what parts of her role she can safely do, and consideration of redeployment if available. Depending on how long she has been there she may have pregnancy rights to paid pregnancy sick leave etc if needed.

If she just decides to quit her job but stays living at home with you for free she is unlikely to be entitled to anything at all until baby is born and she can claim child benefit

There is no obligation for an employer to provide paid sick leave for pregnancy related illness over and above what is normally available - entitlement is the same for other employees. Employers are obliged to allow time off for pregnancy related illness and medical appointment but they are not obliged to pay the employee for these.

That is why I said ‘she may.’ My employer provides this. I am aware many don’t.

Asking for benefits advice

Asking for benefits advice

And explained that none of them have ever claimed benefits before - she and DH have always worked and DD is in work. The only reason OP gave for DD giving up work is for the safety of the pregnancy because the work environment is risky. OP clearly didn’t know about risk assessment and reasonable adjustment. Why on earth posters are assuming that someone with a clearly strong work ethic would encourage their child to leave work and have a life on benefits is beyond me. She was asking for advice and instead got a pile on because she didn’t word it the way some posters would like. It was perfectly clear what she meant.

Sorry but it was misleading. You said ‘Depending on how long she has been there she may have pregnancy rights to paid pregnancy sick leave etc if needed.’

Paid pregnancy sick leave is not a right no matter how long you have worked for an employer, whereas legal pregnancy protected characteristics apply from day one.

OP has only made one post in addition to the opener. The thread is now on page 10. Just an observation.

Because I am still not sure what angle the OP was coming from.

I think OP genuinely wanted advice as to what pregnancy related benefits there were - not necessarily, as posters assumed, to enable her DD to give up work. I don’t think a couple who have worked all their lives and never claimed benefits would want a life on benefits for their daughter - who is working herself. I just think it was clumsily worded. The only reason for DD giving up work seemed to be safety concerns and OP clearly wasn’t aware of statutory risk assessment or the protections available.

I hope OP got something from the thread before the pile on accusing her of being a benefit scrounger. As I said upthread, yet another OP chased off their own thread by unpleasantness. Seems to be the norm these days.

Well the ‘whatever’ seems to be another OP chased from their own thread - and in record time, doesn’t it ? Don’t know why anyone posts for genuine advice because more and more MN is just a nest of vipers waiting to pounce rather than a source of support.

Which is her decision alone. Her body, her choice.
