Friends trip to Portugal but I’m 4 weeks pregnant

I’m around 4–5 weeks pregnant, no symptoms yet aside from mild stomach cramps/hunger and it’s very early so I’m not telling many people.

A group of us booked a trip to Portugal six months ago. We’ll be going when I’m about 5 weeks. My husband isnt coming, but my close friend and her boyfriend, one friend and my best friend.

I’ve told my best friend and she thinks travelling that early is fine, which I agree with logically. The other girl isn’t someone I’m close enough to tell yet. She can be quite naggy/nosy and I’m already worrying about questions if I’m not drinking. I was planning to say I’m on antibiotics but concerned she’ll push.

So…
– Is travelling at 5 weeks actually fine?
– Would you still go?

I think I am overthinking it but wouldn’t want anything to happen abroad while being this early into pregnancy plus friends don’t know (aside from best friend who I am sharing a room with)

I think I need to stop being anxious you’re right, if I have weird symptoms next week I won’t go otherwise I’ll go

Go. Have fun. Don’t drink alcohol. And perhaps be careful with anything like raw fish/ seafood.

I went long-haul at 5 weeks pregnant. Absolutely fine, enjoyed it, glad I went!

That’s lovely! Did you get any symptoms and did you pass through the security x ray machines? X

Won’t have any sea food! A bit off as husband ended up in IcU last year with fish poison abroad!

Travelling at 5 weeks will be fine, and the scanners at the airport are safe for pregnant women.

For reasons not to drink, if I were you I'd probably say Im just getting over a nasty UTI/kidney infection and have been advised not to drink until the symptoms are completely gone.

Enjoy your trip!

You’re overthinking it. Many women don’t even know they’re pregnant at your stage. Is your period late yet?

DappledThings · 29/01/2026 14:31

Absolutely fine to travel. Don't make a big deal of not drinking or make up any excuses. They will always sound fake. If someone guesses they guess. Try to stay chilled on the whole it has to be a secret thing. You don't have to announce it but no point stressing if it isn't a secret.

Yeah I’ll say I’m on antibiotics if one of the girls gets shots otherwise no need to explain

Saying you're on antibiotics is the equivalent of holding up a neon sign saying "I'm pregnant"

But I’ve genuinely not been pregnant before and on antibiotics you can’t drink on they all know I constantly have tonsilitus issues anyway, my friends also know I drink drink when going abroad so I think it’s more suspicious if suddenly I’m not drinking

I'd just go the simple route then of saying "I'm not going to be drinking because I'm pregnant but it's very early days and anything could happen".

That's what I did at a couple of weddings. Meant no speculation or gossip or having to tie myself in knots making up stories. And it shuts down the conversation nicely.

Peonies12 · 29/01/2026 15:11

Honestly just tell them, they'll guess anyway and that'll be more awkward. but say you don't want to discuss further. There's no risk from travelling.

I work with one of the girls and she’s a bit of a talker so I don’t want to tell her. I also don’t want my friends boyfriend knowing that I’m 4 weeks pregnant.

Normally I would but I work with one of the girls and she will definitely tell someone and my manager doesn’t know yet so I don’t feel comfortable at all telling her right now. If it were just my friend T and best friend I would 100% said something

Mazel tov on the pregnancy. Absolutely no need to worry about flying, it can't affect the pregnancy. I think it's only late pregnancy that's a concern for a healthy pregnancy and that's only in case baby arrives early.

Antibiotics fine as an excuse - I hope nosy friend minds her own business!

You can't drink on metronidazole or approx 5 days after either @Miaxx92 But you could just say you don't remember the name of the antibiotic. No need to complicate things.
