Friends trip to Portugal but I’m 4 weeks pregnant

Miaxx92 · 29/01/2026 14:10

I’m around 4–5 weeks pregnant, no symptoms yet aside from mild stomach cramps/hunger and it’s very early so I’m not telling many people.

A group of us booked a trip to Portugal six months ago. We’ll be going when I’m about 5 weeks. My husband isnt coming, but my close friend and her boyfriend, one friend and my best friend.

I’ve told my best friend and she thinks travelling that early is fine, which I agree with logically. The other girl isn’t someone I’m close enough to tell yet. She can be quite naggy/nosy and I’m already worrying about questions if I’m not drinking. I was planning to say I’m on antibiotics but concerned she’ll push.

So…
– Is travelling at 5 weeks actually fine?
– Would you still go?

I think I am overthinking it but wouldn’t want anything to happen abroad while being this early into pregnancy plus friends don’t know (aside from best friend who I am sharing a room with)

You'll be fine. At lot of people don't even know their pregnant at 5 wks and carry on as normal. I wouldn't lie about why you're not drinking just tell them straight out you're pregnant.

And have to keep up pretending to have pain or at least twinges and answer questions about what the dentist thought was wrong? So much pointless effort that will just draw more attention and make more people think "antibiotics eh? Bet she's pregnant".

I'd still assume it was a pregnancy cover. I wouldn't say anything but I'd definitely assume.

I think that’s why I don’t want to go if I go they’ll be guessing and one of the girls at work that’s on the trip will end up sharing my business before my own manager knows. I think it’s better to not go maybe at least I can say I came down with a flu

I would normally do this but as explained one of the girls isn’t trustworthy and we work together I don’t want people at work knowing I’m 4 weeks pregnant

I went long-haul at 5 weeks pregnant. Absolutely fine, enjoyed it, glad I went!

Oh lovely! Did you get any sickness?

When is this trip? If you have had a missed period and positive tests you must be at least 4-5 weeks now but you are talking about going at 5 weeks so either you will be further along on this trip or you should be on the way to airport now.

Going to be very late to pull out.

Eifla2o18 · 29/01/2026 16:34

Sorry. Little confused. You are 5w now and going at 5w. So when is the trip? Like now?

The trip is next week Friday to Sunday so I’ll be between 5-6 weeks. I am estimating since my last period currently I am around 4 weeks

Your pregnant not incapable of going anywhere/ need to be wrapped up in cotton wool. If you are being this ridiculous now, you'll be a wreck by the time it's born. Get on with it!

I went to Portugal at 20 weeks.

Sorry but if you're cancelling trips because you're 5 weeks pregnant you are in for a very long 9 months! Life doesn't stop because you're pregnant. I say that as someone who struggled with infertility for years and had a high risk pregnancy, there is absolutely no reason for you not to go.
So what if people do find out? What's the worst that could happen?

PluckyChancer · 30/01/2026 10:43

I travelled long haul to Japan when 43yrs old and 10 weeks pregnant. It was fine. 🤷🏻‍♀️

A good get-out is saying you're taking antibiotics for a wisdom tooth infection. They're the ones that you get very sick from mixing with booze!

Hope you have a fantastic time!

margegunderson · 30/01/2026 11:40

If one of the “girls” guesses and even tells the manager it’s no biggie. She’s got no proof and you haven’t told her anything so it’s pure speculation.
You’re pregnant not sick. Enjoy your weekend away.

StrawberriesandBrylcream · 30/01/2026 11:46

Its not the point of the thread, but if you genuinely believe one of the women on this trip would "guess", interrogate you into confirming and then tell your manager before you felt ready then you really need to reassess that friendship.

I get why you'd want to hold off until further along to tell work, but there are no general risks to travelling, your morning sickness is more likely to kick in the week you get back and you have a couple of options to present in terms of why you're not drinking.

Make the most of your trip

TommyAtkins · 30/01/2026 12:01

I flew to SE Asia while 8 weeks pregnant on a trip I’d long pre booked.

The flight was fine, but a couple of days after arriving felt a huge surge in morning sickness. Long story short, I ended up paying for a scan at an international hospital to discover I was in fact carrying twins. It was both the most fantastic and terrifying moment of any trip I’d ever taken.

I hope you have an amazing trip to Portugal.

PurpleThistle7 · 30/01/2026 13:36

I think you have a friendship problem honestly. Are these people you even want to spend time with?

You know you can drink alcohol on almost all antibiotics, right?

Not on metronidazole which is often prescribed for infected wisdom tooth.

Doodlestar · 30/01/2026 13:46

I had a trip with a big group of friends last year, the weekend I found out I was pregnant, so also 5w. I find it easier just to pretend to drink and act as normal, so I would fill a glass to look like wine (diluted apple juice 🤣), order plain tonic in a g&t glass, get drinks for my friends and just make myself something different. Or accept a drink and pour it away/ replace later. In a restaurant, you could order one alcoholic drink, just pretend to sip it, order a soft drink after. Even a few sips of a real drink, in my opinion (having googled it), would do no harm especially so early on before placebta develops etc, however obviously many people wouldnt be comfortable with even that, which is fine.

I find that mostly, people don't actually pay much attention to what other people are doing, but if you make an excuse like antibiotics I think it's more obvious.

Also if one friend knows , she can help you keep it discrete from the rest. Bit more tricky if it's a big party holiday, shots etc, but you can always just say you fancy an early night etc.

Exactly this!

I went to Portugal at 4-5 weeks pregnant (positive test and hopped on a plane the the following day). I was a bridesmaid for a wedding and it was lots of friends / family out socialising the whole week. Not one person copped that I was pregnant.

Obviously my husband knew and my dad knew (nobody else). So we opted to stick together when ordering drinks... so if I said Mojito they both knew I meant non alcoholic (sprite and some mint leaves 😂), If I said Gin it was just tonic or sprite in a Gin glass, if I said Beer they would get a Non Alcoholic beer and get the barman to pour into a glass for me.

Portugal is really good for N-A stuff. And if knew friend knows I'd just set the scene early on that the two of you are stickkng together in rounds and the others can stick together.

Wolfe5507 · 30/01/2026 15:12

I will be 12-13 weeks when I fly out to Portugal end of March...I do feel anxious but will try and enjoy the trip regardless! 😊

Herewegoagain85 · 30/01/2026 18:27

Morning sickness generally starts after 6 weeks so I'd definitely enjoy this early part of feeling fresh before any rubbish symptoms kick in!!

Hiptothisjive · 30/01/2026 18:38

Completely overthinking it. Absolutely no reason to not travel at all. What are you worried about? Millions of women travel while pregnant all the time….

Don’t lie , dont indulge just don’t order alcohol or drink. If asked say it your New Year’s resolution.

Yeah maybe I’m a bit anxious for no reason. I’ll just drink water or coke or something
