Friends trip to Portugal but I’m 4 weeks pregnant

Miaxx92 · 29/01/2026 14:10

I’m around 4–5 weeks pregnant, no symptoms yet aside from mild stomach cramps/hunger and it’s very early so I’m not telling many people.

A group of us booked a trip to Portugal six months ago. We’ll be going when I’m about 5 weeks. My husband isnt coming, but my close friend and her boyfriend, one friend and my best friend.

I’ve told my best friend and she thinks travelling that early is fine, which I agree with logically. The other girl isn’t someone I’m close enough to tell yet. She can be quite naggy/nosy and I’m already worrying about questions if I’m not drinking. I was planning to say I’m on antibiotics but concerned she’ll push.

So…
– Is travelling at 5 weeks actually fine?
– Would you still go?

I think I am overthinking it but wouldn’t want anything to happen abroad while being this early into pregnancy plus friends don’t know (aside from best friend who I am sharing a room with)

Yep I went to Spain twice in early pregnancy and was totally fine, don’t worry.

MakeYourOwnSunshine · 29/01/2026 16:31

I'd just say I had done Dry January and found it so good I was carrying it on. The antibiotics excuse is way too obvious.

Hopeandwonder · 29/01/2026 16:31

I’d understand re considering things at 28 weeks pregnant but you’re 5 weeks… you’ll be fine OP definitely overthinking

Hopeandwonder · 29/01/2026 16:32

Yes love the dry Jan excuses

Squirrelchops1 · 29/01/2026 16:34

Many people wouldn't even know they were pregnant at that stage and would be on holiday enjoying themselves with no ill effects eg the flying. So enjoy.

Sorry. Little confused. You are 5w now and going at 5w. So when is the trip? Like now?

I think the dry January excuse is far more believable!

“I got so drunk over Christmas and I feel like my alcohol is becoming an issue for me so I’m doing dry Jan and I’ve made a promise to stick to it this time” that would be what I’d say haha

BeaTwix · 29/01/2026 16:41

Doctor.

You can drink while taking Amoxicillin. One of my friend's used that excuse (she was one of the first in our circle to get pregnant so I hadn't yet worked out the neon sign element) and I spent the entire weekend telling her she could drink on all antibiotics except Metronidazole and that I didn't understand why her partner (a GP) hadn't told her that.

So I think antibiotics is a really shit excuse and wouldn't use it.

As an aside I understand you are excited about your pregnancy but I suggest you look into the dos and don'ts quickly. Life continues while pregnant and declaring you need to opt out of perfectly safe activites because you are pregnant really won't endear you to people socially or at work.

PurpleThistle7 · 29/01/2026 16:42

Trigger warning… I went to Portugal early on for a friend’s wedding. Morning sickness well and truly struck while away so I had to tell everyone. I actually had some complications and the clinic staff were lovely and very kind. I would go no worries but be ready for them to guess pretty quickly.

Pistachiocake · 29/01/2026 16:54

If you're lucky enough not to get morning sickness, it's fine, but a lot of people get it around 6 weeks. Doctors say it's ok at this stage (unless there's something specific they've told you) but it is up to you how you feel.
No one should ask why you're not drinking, none of their business.

BigKissByeBye · 29/01/2026 16:57

I flew shorthaul every fortnight for work for my entire pregnancy until I hit 36 weeks and the airline would no longer fly me, so I had to take maternity leave.

museumum · 29/01/2026 17:01

I would 100% tell them you don't want to drink (rather than can't). Tell them you've been feeling so much better not drinking in January that you want to continue or that you were feeling terrible after Christmas and you just don't want to drink. Personally I think that not wanting to is a better 'reason' and anybody who pressures you would be a dick.

Congratulations on your pregnancy.
No issues flying and airport scanners are fine.

What part of Portugal are you going to? I've been there twice in early pregnancy and ots very easy to obtain non alcohol cocktails, alcohol free martinis, 0% beer, gin and wine.
You could also ask for non alcoholic sangria which was my fav - basically a jug of fruit punch.

Also.. get a new pharmacist, yours sound incredibly incompetent.

Antibitoc excuse won't work... everyone will know.

user2848502016 · 29/01/2026 17:33

Yes travelling is fine at this stage, and worst case if something does happen Portugal has good healthcare. Make sure your travel insurance covers pregnancy.
No need to explain not drinking, an “I’m not drinking at the moment” is enough and if anyone pushes they’re the unreasonable ones.

Cotswoldmama · 29/01/2026 17:33

I think saying you're on anti biotic is the best excuse, I would probably suspect you were pregancr but I would ask or push you to drink. I would just think it's early days and your weren't ready to tell anyone

StrawberriesandBrylcream · 29/01/2026 17:56

Miaxx92 · 29/01/2026 17:13

Ok it will bemetronidazole then

Just keep mind this is normally prescribed for vaginal or skin infections, but that might help you more with a vague allusion to an issue "down there"

Good idea I don’t think anyone will ask but I’ll say that

yeah one of my work colleagues was pregnant at a work drinks event and she wasn’t drinking and I thought she was pregnant and she’s just announced she is lol but I would never ask

Metronidazole is used for a lot of dental infections. Few days before...mention toothache. Job done.

I was about to say this. Feign toothache over the weekend, dentist on Monday, you then cannot drink for a week. Might be a myth but I heard they sometimes give Metronidazole to alcoholics as a tiny amount of booze will make you really sick.

And have to keep up pretending to have pain or at least twinges and answer questions about what the dentist thought was wrong? So much pointless effort that will just draw more attention and make more people think "antibiotics eh? Bet she's pregnant".

I'd still assume it was a pregnancy cover. I wouldn't say anything but I'd definitely assume.

Latenightreader · 29/01/2026 21:19

I went on a hen weekend at almost 12 weeks. I hadn't told anyone apart from my parents at this point, and didn't want to tell the bride until afterwards. I had a uti a week before and kept the packet of antibiotics to take with me! Trying to explain not going on the zip wires was another matter...I told her a few days later and she had indeed guessed!
