Friends trip to Portugal but I’m 4 weeks pregnant

I’m around 4–5 weeks pregnant, no symptoms yet aside from mild stomach cramps/hunger and it’s very early so I’m not telling many people.

A group of us booked a trip to Portugal six months ago. We’ll be going when I’m about 5 weeks. My husband isnt coming, but my close friend and her boyfriend, one friend and my best friend.

I’ve told my best friend and she thinks travelling that early is fine, which I agree with logically. The other girl isn’t someone I’m close enough to tell yet. She can be quite naggy/nosy and I’m already worrying about questions if I’m not drinking. I was planning to say I’m on antibiotics but concerned she’ll push.

So…
– Is travelling at 5 weeks actually fine?
– Would you still go?

I think I am overthinking it but wouldn’t want anything to happen abroad while being this early into pregnancy plus friends don’t know (aside from best friend who I am sharing a room with)

Morning sickness generally starts after 6 weeks so I'd definitely enjoy this early part of feeling fresh before any rubbish symptoms kick in!!

I think my clear blue said I am between 4-5 weeks which means next week is either 5-6 weeks! My sister got morning sickness around 7-8 weeks so hoping this!

Go. Have fun. Don’t drink alcohol. And perhaps be careful with anything like raw fish/ seafood.

Will keep off the fish!

Mazel tov on the pregnancy. Absolutely no need to worry about flying, it can't affect the pregnancy. I think it's only late pregnancy that's a concern for a healthy pregnancy and that's only in case baby arrives early.

Antibiotics fine as an excuse - I hope nosy friend minds her own business!

Thank you!

Absolutely fine to travel. Don't make a big deal of not drinking or make up any excuses. They will always sound fake. If someone guesses they guess. Try to stay chilled on the whole it has to be a secret thing. You don't have to announce it but no point stressing if it isn't a secret.

Probably best for me to act cool as a cucumber !

When is this trip? If you have had a missed period and positive tests you must be at least 4-5 weeks now but you are talking about going at 5 weeks so either you will be further along on this trip or you should be on the way to airport now.

Going to be very late to pull out.

The trip is next week Thursday- come back Sunday night. Test said I am 4-5 this week. I’ll be 5-6 next week

Sorry but if you're cancelling trips because you're 5 weeks pregnant you are in for a very long 9 months! Life doesn't stop because you're pregnant. I say that as someone who struggled with infertility for years and had a high risk pregnancy, there is absolutely no reason for you not to go.
So what if people do find out? What's the worst that could happen?

I suffer from anxiety that’s probably why I am acting like this! Hopefully it’s fine

Just keep mind this is normally prescribed for vaginal or skin infections, but that might help you more with a vague allusion to an issue "down there"

No it’s not. It’s usually prescribed for a tooth infection!

Shoemadlady · 31/01/2026 00:12

You’re really overthinking it. I travelled all around Europe early on and other than being a bit tired had a fab time! Go and have a great holiday with your mates, it may be the last you get for a while!

I can promise you, whilst it might also be prescribed for a tooth infection it is also normally prescribed for skin and vaginal infections. Which in itself might lend itself to the op staying vague and not having to "prove" she has a sore mouth

I was about to say this. Feign toothache over the weekend, dentist on Monday, you then cannot drink for a week. Might be a myth but I heard they sometimes give Metronidazole to alcoholics as a tiny amount of booze will make you really sick.

I was on it for a abscess, I started having heart palpitations and nausea I rang dentist said I absolutely hadn’t had alcohol (they had been very clear I had to avoid) and they asked if I was using a anti bac hand gel which had alcohol in it (it was 2020) I was! Stopped that and the symptoms stopped.

Normandy144 · 31/01/2026 08:08

You are definitely overthinking this. I would use the one friend you have told to your advantage. Explain you don't want people to know and get her to help you e.g. ordering drinks without alcohol which could pass for alcoholic ones. And so what if the other friend guesses? That's all it will be is a guess - you're not in the witness dock, you don't have to admit anything. If she tells anyone at work then it says more about her trustworthiness than it does about you. Go and enjoy.

Rayqueen2026 · 31/01/2026 08:18

Erm the guideline on some antibiotics is don't drink but actually causes no harm. Tell the truth best way forward or just don't go

Tattletail · 31/01/2026 08:40

Absolutely go! And have a blooming fabulous time. Make the most of these last few months.

HarryVanderspeigle · 31/01/2026 08:45

I'd just say you did dry January and are continuing for February. Congratulations!

Minjou · 29/01/2026 15:37

You know you can drink alcohol on almost all antibiotics, right?

You can’t on metronidazole, makes you violently sick. But yeah pretty much all
the rest are ok.

I’m going so excited now! I’ve decided I’m going to say “I am continuing with dry jan so not rly drinking much”

“I got so drunk over Christmas and I feel like my alcohol is becoming an issue for me so I’m doing dry Jan and I’ve made a promise to stick to it this time” that would be what I’d say haha

Good one

She’s going to order a fake drink for me! I’m also going to say I have a headache one of the days the girls know I get migraines so normally don’t drink which isn’t new

Yes it can be dangerous I was on it in the past was careful enough not to do anything with alcohol! Glad you’re ok now

I’m coming from a place of someone who has had multiple MC, including one on holiday abroad.
congratulations on being pregnant! MC is very common in early pregnancy, and while I sincerely hope it doesn’t happen, I can tell you that if the worse does, it won’t be because you’ve gone on holiday. So go and have a good time! This early, if the worse does happen it would be like a heavy period, upsetting but shouldn’t cause and big medical issues.
Like I say I hope it doesn’t happen but I know from experience that when it does (especially the first few) you try and find something you did wrong to explain it. You don’t need to do that x

atamlin · 31/01/2026 21:14

Your best friend knows and she’s going. Tell everyone else (IF IT COMES UP) that you’re cutting down on drinking as you went too hard at Christmas. For a couple of drinks every night, have lime and soda dressed as alcoholic drinks. Have a great time!

MushroomQueen · 31/01/2026 21:25

I live in Portugal and was flying back and forth early pregnancies all 3 times. They have alcohol free beer here (ceveja sem alcohol) or just say you have a headache etc definitely go as it’s great fun here
