Yep - I had an elective with my first and cannot recommend it enough. It was my choice, not medically necessary. We had music playing, it was calm, I felt able to take in every moment. There's no doubt in my mind I will have another.
I don't think all the money in the world would convince me to go for a "natural" birth. I know so many women whose epidurals didn't work - if they were reliable that would be an option for me but you have to hope it works and hope that there's even someone available to do it.
Recovery wasn't that bad for me, but who knows second time round?
The 24 hours was of course very hard. I had the catheter taken out same day, as I was able to waddle over to the toilet. Went home the following day after one night in the hospital.
My only advice is take the painkillers like clockwork. The night staff didn't give them to me in time and I was crying in pain, and DH was hounding them, and they weren't very empathetic. If they were rushed off their feet I'd have understood but they were seemingly chatting and taking their time with everything. You wonder why some people go into the profession. Day staff were completely different - they were wonderfully attentive.
By day 3 we were going for local walks for 10-15 minutes. My tip is to get up and about as soon as possible but for very short walks, not up and down the stairs all day or anything like that. DH took four weeks off as we didn't know how it would be. Anyway after two and a bit weeks we needed a prescription for my daughter, DH doesn't drive, so I drove to the pharmacy and back. If I couldn't then DH would have got a taxi.
We have no family or close friends nearby really, but did NCT so had a new group of friends who were willing to drop over and pick up anything we need (and 2.5 years on DD will probably have a sleepover with one of them while we are in hospital). So I'd say make sure you've got some local resources in case things aren't smooth and you need longer for recovery!
