@Beccaa123 you probably won’t know at first! With my DD I was complaining of lower back pain all day. In the evening I noticed that the pain wasn’t constant any more, it was coming and going. It was so mild at first though that it was hard to tell exactly when each contraction started and stopped. I started timing but had to really concentrate because contractions build up to a peak and then drift off again.
They stayed like that for around 24 hours, not particularly intense but there was pain and they weren’t making my tummy hard. The pain was all in my back and it felt like pressure building up in my back and then releasing. I spent the day active and went to my nieces first birthday party. I was still driving.
About 11pm that night they started to get noticeably more intense (but still very tolerable). We decided to go to bed and get some sleep and as I stood up I felt a little trickle. My DH thought I’d probably just had a little wee (which I was quite insulted by tbh because I hadn’t leaked any wee at all up to that point!). Anyway, even though I’d been having regular contractions for over 24 hours that were getting more intense AND my waters had (possibly) gone I was still in denial.
I woke up around 1am and by this point it was too painful to go back to sleep. I went to the loo and lost my mucus plug. That’s when I finally knew that I was for sure in labour. I woke my DH up at 3am to tell him to pack a bag. He was surprised as I hadn’t actually told him that I’d been tracking contractions all that time. We went to the hospital around 6am and DD was born at 10am.
You didn’t ask for my life story, but I thought I’d give you an insight into how it went for me! I felt all the labour pain in my back (even though baby wasn’t back to back) and in the thick of labour, it felt like someone was twisting my lower spine. I used heat to help (hot water bottle) and a tens machine x
