Does anyone else just feel very numb and in disbelief? I am around 5 weeks and 2 days and I only found out on Tuesday but it still hasn't settled in yet. It was unexpected so I don’t know whether to feel excited/scared/nervous!
I called doctors today they said nothing they really do I just have to wait? I did call midwife and they told me to fill in a self referral form so just waiting to hear. What happens at my first appointment if I get one? Do we get scanned at 7 weeks like some people are saying above?
appreciate any help I’m all new to this! Thanks x

Parks17 · 21/11/2024 19:35

I understand that it's the same for everyone but I find it so weird that we can find out we're pregnant so early and then we're just left for WEEKS until our first appointment

First pregnancy here and questioning every little pain and cramp. Wondering whether to do the 6 week private scan or wait and go at 8 weeks where it's more likely to see something?

Any advice? Currently 4+1 (I think!!!)

Superscientist · 21/11/2024 19:44

@Thetravellover the first trimester is quite low contact and generally underwhelming!

If you have had previous miscarriage or have bleeding the early pregnancy unit (epu) can offer early scans but under most circumstances your first NHS scan is between 10 and 14 weeks. This is the dating scan and they can also do testing for downs, Edwards and patau syndromes. You can opt in or out for that and have a choice about doing all or some of the testing.

There are private testing places if you want an early scan. It's possible to see a heartbeat at 6 weeks but it's variable. The epu in my area scans at 7-8 weeks as then if you are a bit behind where you expect there's still the possibility of seeing a heartbeat. Timing it too early can cause more anxiety than it resolves. There is also quite a lot of variability in the skill level of private places and you might get inaccurate advice. On the thread for my last pregnancy there was a lady who was told she had lost her pregnancy at a private clinic but a scan at the epu the following morning found a perfect baby at the correct gestation with a heartbeat!

The first midwife appointment is between 7 and 10 weeks normally and is the booking appointment. The midwife will weigh you and measure your height. They will run some blood tests to look for your blood group and screen you for STDs and hiv. They then go through your medical and family history. You will be asked to provide a breath sample for to check if you smoke. There are the usual questions about heart disease and what not but also things like fgm, if you are related to the dad, if there are any issues with the pregnancy. You will then be assigned as low or high risk. High risk can be for a long list of things and usually means you will have some input from the obstetricians. I'm bipolar and on medication for that. Even though it seems quite removed from pregnancy it means that I might need more support for my mental health in pregnancy. I'm at risk of severe episodes post partum and my baby might need some extra monitoring after they are born. What it meant in my first pregnancy was that I had one appointment with an obstetrician who stressed the importance of staying on meds and I had a preplanned 3 day stay on the maternity ward after she was born. Otherwise everything was the same as a low risk pregnancy. Its just a way of making sure everyone is aware of things that could cause complications and that they are aware ahead of them happening so don't get panicked if you do get assigned as "high risk". My midwife filled in the form for the scan referral in my booking appointments. I had a choice of 2 hospitals - the one I will give birth in or my local hospital that doesn't have a maternity ward and only deals with outpatients maternity care.

Superscientist · 21/11/2024 19:48

@Parks17 I would wait for 7-8 weeks tbh. That's when my epu offers reassurance scans. If you are a bit behind, which can be perfectly normal, you might not then be able to see much if you go at 6 weeks by waiting a week or two it means that if you are behind you will still have a chance of seeing a heart beat. I was scanned at 7+3 and measured 6 weeks with a heartbeat. If I had scanned at 6 weeks and was behind it's unlikely I would have seen a heartbeat which could have been more anxiety provoking that reassuring!

MrsS11 · 21/11/2024 19:57

Hope all goes well tomorrow @TrulyMiss @HonestPinkTiger and @LifeonMarss the emotional rollercoaster in pregnancy is wild! I think it's also really normal to have a 'wtf have I done!' time when you first find out you're pregnant, it's a such a big change. I've certainly had it every time (6 times!) I've found out I'm pregnant, no matter how desperately wanted the baby is. I don't think there's any need or point in feeling guilty for it, it's just the understanding that it is actually a massive deal!

Hoppityhophops · 21/11/2024 20:02

@superscientist thank you for that comprehensive break down of what to expect. I still can't face making any firm plans like booking a midwife appointment or a scan. I'm only 6 weeks 6 days so it still feels too early in my mind. IRL noone knows yet. Fortunately (or unfortunately in the sense that I hope all is ok) I haven't started feeling sick yet. Is anyone else not feeling sick at this point? By now with the other 3 I was heaving all the time and wanting to throw up. My boobs are ridiculously sore and I'm more tired but that's it.

I am 6w4d and exactly same as you. Sore boobs and tired but no other symptoms. With my first I was nauseous and had very strong food aversions. This time nothing like that so it's hard to feel excited as I feel something is wrong?! Even though so many people have no symptoms and very healthy pregnancies

Superscientist · 21/11/2024 20:17

No problem @Hoppityhophops I had my booking appointment this lunchtime so it was still all fresh in my mind!

I'm 7 and a bit weeks and much less nauseous and sick than previous pregnancies by 7 weeks I'm normally quite debilitated with the sickness but I only dated as 6 weeks with my scan and my sickness is more consistent with where I am normally at 6 weeks. I switch between not being able to face food and liquids to ravenous and I never had the ravenous bit previously. I'm hoping it lasts but am prepared to get with the GP as soon as it gets worse for meds. The fatigue is hitting me more and I think that relates to my nausea more. I tried to do a pilates class this evening and managed 15 minutes before I had to throw up and lie down! I was able to eat afterwards I think it was more the physical exertion than nausea. I've barely moved from the sofa today so it was probably a bit optimistic to try the class!

TrulyMiss · 21/11/2024 20:52

@MaSads that's totally understandable, I'm the same! I'm going at 9am so only one very bad nights' sleep away... Confused how about you?

Thank you both this is so helpful! @Superscientist @Parks17

Im too scared to book anything early scan wise or even contact my midwife/GP until I’ve tested and see more line progression!

If I hadn’t missed my period I wouldn’t even know I was pregnant at this stage - but bracing myself for the inevitable nausea. Sending massive hugs to anyone going through this right now ❤️ so grateful for this community!

Hoppityhophops · 21/11/2024 21:47

Awww @superscientist congrats on your first scan. What you say makes sense and I could also be measuring behind like you. Hence it may be another week or so before the sickness starts. I had the anti sickness meds last time but I've convinced myself the sickness this time might help me lose a bit of weight. I think I've totally forgotten the sick feeling though and I'll be begging the Dr for some anti sickness tabs before long. Well done for even attempting the pilate class feeling like you are.

Hey, I'm about 8+2 , and I don't have any symptoms yet (just painful boobs and very tired).. had a private scan yesterday and all looks fine, so it's possible really! I wasn't worried as with my first I never got any sickness or nausea, and I felt a bit like a fraud (sorrrry to anyone who had it rough..!) 🙈 But I can understand that it's worrying to you if that's how it was with your previous pregnancies, but all pregnancies are different 😉

Triangleflower · 21/11/2024 21:58

I have mild hypothyroidism and I’ve gone from undetectable TSH level just before pregnancy to 4.35 a few weeks later! The optimal for pregnancy is lower than 2.5 - does anyone else have hypothyroidism? It increases risk of miscarriage when over 2.5 so feeling pretty anxious! Ahh

Hoping to hear about my booking appointment soon but that could be another 3/4 weeks also

@TrulyMiss Mine is 9.20! I'm struggling to fall asleep so I'm with you with the bad night haha!

LifeonMarss · 22/11/2024 07:44

Did a test this morning and it was lighter than last weeks so very worried, telling myself it was because I had a glass of water but it was a small glass so I doubt it's that. Going to try and book a scan in for the next few days to put my mind at rest, I'm just worried after the brown stuff the other day and now this test being lighter.

OneGladTiger · 22/11/2024 08:03

Please can I join? I think I’m about 4+3. Doesn’t feel real yet but the clear blue makes it seem a bit more real!! Not sure if I’d be due end of July or beginning of August. I got this this morning:

Due July 2025
owlcat24 · 22/11/2024 09:02

It's good to read everyone's updates; good luck to those who have their scans today, hope everything goes well!

I've got a rotten cold, still feeling sick all day long and my toddler is ill and off nursery too so I'm in survival mode. On the bright side, I managed to contact the hospital and chase my booking appointment, they sorted it while in the phone but it's not until I'm almost 12 weeks!

Tests are binary pregnant or not. Line progression doesn't give you any indication about the viability of the pregnancy. I got dye stealers with my first 2 pregnancies. One was a miscarriage the other was my daughter.
As well as hydration there's the hook effect that can make tests look lighter.

TrulyMiss · 22/11/2024 09:59

Measuring about 6.5 weeks when I should be 7.5 weeks so not looking good, even with a heartbeat. The ultrasound technician was very straight with us - basically the only chance is that my dates are wrong but as I was doing follicle tracking as part of ovulation induction and also clear blue advanced opks I don't see any possibility that the dates are wrong. Preparing for the worst now. Again.

Superscientist · 22/11/2024 10:10

@TrulyMiss are they going do a repeat scan? I'm in a similar situation I'm 10days behind at 7.5 weeks.

I posted on this thread, there are a few others in our situation and some have caught up. https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/pregnancy/5189228-7-weeks-scan-showed-5-weeks-concerned?latest=1

TrulyMiss · 22/11/2024 11:33

@Superscientist thank you for your kind reply. How are you coping? they said come back in a week. I had a mmc last time and by the end of the weeks I'd convinced myself it's be fine. This time I know my chances are not good do I really don't want to give myself false hope. I also refuse to wait a week as I know it'll kill he do going somewhere else on Monday - I think it'll give me some sense of how things are going. Have my 4 year old son's birthday party tomorrow so have to stick a brave face on...

Superscientist · 22/11/2024 11:41

@TrulyMiss I miscarried 2 days before my daughters 4th birthday! It was hard but a good distraction. Just take things day by day and if that is too much hour by hour. I took myself off to bed for 20 minutes as and when I needed a break from being around people.

I had my booking appointment yesterday and the midwife was telling me to be positive but I think I feel better with a foot in both camps. I've not managed to go to work again, nausea and fatigue is kicking me. I'm dozing on the sofa with day time telly on. I had worse sickness with my miscarriage than I did my daughter so it's just reminding me of that rather than being reassuring. I've got a 2 week wait for my repeat scan which feels like a lifetime!

How are you managing?

TrulyMiss · 22/11/2024 11:48

@Superscientist I'm hoping his party will be ok, I kept it small on purpose and 2/3 of the friends coming know what's happened. But I agree it's a good distraction.
My last miscarriage was two weeks before his second birthday, so I have very poor timing!!
Last time I knew something was wrong (and there was, no feral pole) but this time it felt so much more like when I was pregnant with my son, I was really sure it'd be good news today. Feels like I can't trust my body!
Glad that you're minding yourself but totally crummy that the symptoms are reminding you of the miscarriage.
Two weeks is so long! Here (Ireland) you have to wait a week but I'm going to go to a different clinic on Monday as I can't bear to wait that long. I know it won't give me a final answer but maybe some sense of how it's going...
