I have just found out I am expecting baby number 2 and my due date is 1st May.

Has anyone else found out they are expecting and looking for some company?

@Beccaa123 I'm in the same position, although I know it's highly recommended you don't.

I've decided not to as I know it was make me more anxious if I can't find it, but do always get tempted if I'm having an anxious day.

narns · 19/11/2024 12:44

@Beccaa123 I've never tried but I really don't think it's a good idea unless you're trained in how to use them. They have the potential to cause more harm than good!

Cause more harm? Do you mean to the baby? Or anxiety wise?

Has anyone used a fetal doppler to hear the heartbeat?
Have you been successful with it? I'm unsure whether to buy one

Also not tried one but I’ve read you can often just pick up your own heartbeat so they are pointless really.

If you are having an anxious day you’re better off booking a private scan to ease your mind ☺️

narns · 19/11/2024 12:51

@Beccaa123 not harm to the baby, harm to you in terms of anxiety. You might struggle to find the heart beat one day because of the position of the baby and worry unnecessarily that something is wrong.

Alternatively, you might experience worrying symptoms and use it for reassurance but pick up on your heart beat rather than the baby and think everything is ok when it isn't.

It's obviously up to you but I don't think they are recommended unless you have training on how to use them x

This is why I don’t use one despite being anxious and experiencing several losses. @Beccaa123 can you just call in to see your midwife if you’re having an anxious day/week. I think most of them are happy to squeeze you in and find the heartbeat for you if you’re feeling anxious- at least until you’re feeling regular movement. I know mine would do that if I asked her to x

Beccaa123 · 19/11/2024 13:23

Thanks everyone.
I don't actually have a midwife, I live in the middle east and you are seen by your Ob.
In regards to a private scan, again it's not really a thing here as health care is private here.
I'm definitely in two minds on whether to get one, purely on an anxiety level if I didn't find the heartbeat!

My experienced midwife took a few minutes to locate the baby's heartbeat with my first pregnancy.

I really think it's pointless to use medical apparatus unless you're trained in how to do it and what to look out for.

I think if you are anxious to the point that your mental health is affected then you need help for prenatal anxiety/depression, not to try and effectively "self-medicate" with a Doppler.

And I mean this all kindly, I had a lot of very anxious borderline unhinged behaviours with my first pregnancy, so I really do understand the anxiety. I won't list them as I don't want to give anyone any ideas Wink but misusing medical equipment was definitely on there.

I had my 16 week check today and I'm feeling a bit shaken actually. I've been having headaches and visual disturbances for a few weeks. They did protein in my urine and immediately took me off for a blood sample to test for preeclampsia.

I didn't have it in my first pregnancy so it's new ground for me. I hope they process the results quickly so that I know where I stand.

Beccaa123 · 20/11/2024 05:37

I need to try and be more confident in the fact that my 12 week scan went well and I'm around 14 weeks now so it is unlikely something will go wrong.

I had protein the entire way through my last pregnancy. Headaches too. I always seem to have headaches in pregnancy. Nothing came of it though. No pre eclampsia, they just monitored me more closely throughout. There can be lots of reasons for the protein, most of them unthreatening :)

Toothfairy0113 · 20/11/2024 11:05

I've been getting migraine type headaches more regularly.. I usually get them about once a month generally but been getting them weekly recently, sometimes multiple in a week. I remember getting headaches more regularly with my other 2 too, especially my first so I think it's just hormones for me. I almost had to cancel a full day at work one day last week 🙈

BrightGoose · 20/11/2024 12:13

I’ve been having headaches too and had a day off work last week because of headaches. There no fun

LeBonBon · 20/11/2024 14:23

I've been getting headaches too, almost daily. Was starting to worry about high blood pressure...my mum was in hospital for two weeks with pre-eclampsia back in the day, but 16 weeks is too early for that isn't it? Think it's just hormones playing havoc. Apparently more headaches mean a boy is more likely? Anyone got any evidence for this?! Haha - my first is a girl and I had no headaches.

I have suffered with really bad headaches- I had days off work for it.. Found out I'm having a little boy last night! So maybe😂

BrightGoose · 20/11/2024 18:02

Haha I thought boys give you a headache after birth 😂 I was pregnant with my son 8 years ago and other than craving water and chocolate cookies I didn’t have symptoms of a boy or girl although the heart rate theory was very accurate for my boy and girl. With my girl I was very spotty very sick.

Zeeha · 20/11/2024 21:24

I've been getting a lot of headaches too! Paracetamol has hardly been taking the edge off. I tried that 4head stick for the first time today and wish I'd of known about it sooner!

fingerscrossedmumma · 20/11/2024 21:33

I recommend those cooling gel patches too! They've been a lifesaver for me

4head is soooo brilliant. It’s been a life saver for me both pregnancies, I’ve been trying not to have too much paracetamol

Toothfairy0113 · 21/11/2024 08:21

I'll have to get one and give it a go.. woken up with another this morning that's knocking me sick x

LeBonBon · 21/11/2024 08:31

Ooooh @ThatGladSwan- interesting! Congratulations on your boy😊
I can't wait to find out 😆Last time I was 100% sure it was a girl, DH didn't have an inkling until the 20 week scan. This time I really don't know, but he's convinced himself it's another girl and has apparently happily resigned himself to live forevermore in a household surrounded by girls. We'll see!

@BrightGoose - undeniably true! 😂

I don't mind which we get though, I just want to know.

Thanks for all the tips about 4Head - going to get myself one today.

How long till you find out? I booked a private as I just couldn't wait😂I was adamant it was a girl, but the headaches were unbearable for me! They made me sick as well! I don't know if it correlates to having a boy, but the theory was true for me! Let us know when you find out it's so exciting

Poster57 · 21/11/2024 08:58

I’m off to buy 4Head today as well! I used to use it years ago but I didn’t know it was pregnancy safe - I think we’re just so used to assuming nothing is 🙈😂

Hoping to find out at our 20 week scan, but will be patient if no luck. My DD was upside down and showing her (lack of boy) bits to the camera so we had no choice but to find out last time😂I was shocked as I didn't think we would see so clearly, but with DD we were at Kings in London and I think they're a centre of excellence/have better equipment than most places in the country. We've moved since so I'm not sure we'll have the same experience.

Ahh that's amazing she was moving about though! I love seeing that🤗I had an early one I'm nearly 17 weeks, It was VERY clear for a private scan and we chose to keep it a secret and so they did a potty shot in an envelope, and it was very clear it's a boy😂It was at Window To The Womb, I'd recommend them highly, our package was a wellbeing scan (obviously nowhere near as thorough as NHS 20 week), we heard the heartbeat, had a 4D sneak peek, 2 free printed images, and all of the photos sent to us for free digitally!
I bet your so excited to find out!
