I have just found out I am expecting baby number 2 and my due date is 1st May.

Has anyone else found out they are expecting and looking for some company?

That's so sad @Tigerlilli I'm sorry

holdmydrinks · 11/10/2024 20:56

@BrightGoose which brand was it?
My nausea is awful but I'm taking doxylamin which seems to be helping. Not as bad as my exhaustion and dizziness though! I'm about 8 weeks now.

BrightGoose · 11/10/2024 21:02

I was on ondansetron but now they’ve changed it to metoclopramide it’s just not working great I was heaving for hours this morning I would have just been better being sick. I’m only 7 weeks and I know it’s going to get worse I might ask to try something else.

narns · 11/10/2024 21:03

@BrightGoose which meds were you on which carry the risk of defects?

I've been taking Xonvea for the last couple of days and it has completely turned things around! I've gone from vomiting multiple times a day to not at all and only occasional tolerable nausea. I'm sleeping better too! But finding it harder to wake up and sleepier throughout the day.

In a stupid way it's made me feel a bit anxious that things aren't progressing. My DH literally had to tell me "you've started taking pills to stop your sickness and nausea and now you're worried that you don't have sickness and nausea?!". Pregnancy after loss can be a minefield!

BrightGoose · 11/10/2024 20:53

How is everyone handling their nausea ? I had to change my anti sickness because there is a slight increase in certain birth defects with the one I was on for the first 10 weeks. I also was told I need antibiotics and this has both made my sickness worse and less manageable.

anyone know they will need a section? It seems along way away but I know I’ll be having one all being well.

I'm definitely having an elective after an EMCS last time.

jollydollyirl · 11/10/2024 21:17

Me too @Flick89. Found labour v stressful which ended in an EMCS. Planning to go elective this time. Had such a good experience.

BrightGoose · 11/10/2024 21:24

The ondansatron carries the risk it increases the risk of cleft lip and palate by 4 (in 10,000) so it is small but by week 10 those are then formed so the risk is not there then.

I did read that those can make you really sleepy and I am already on two naps a day I just need to ride it out to week 10!

I had a two emergency sections but for two different reasons my first was because my baby got very very stuck then my second was an emergency cuz I went into labour before my section date.

Also had a good experience from the moment I was in theatre. It was the only civilised part for me believe it or not! 😂

california22 · 11/10/2024 22:38

I'm so so sorry @Tigerlilli - be gentle to yourself and take some time off if you can.

california22 · 11/10/2024 22:40

My nausea seems to be better since I am filling up my belly constantly! I am going to put on so much weight but better than feeling awful. I'm also soooo hungry anyway, way more than last time, perhaps because I'm still bf a bit.

I had an elective first time round and not a doubt I will have one this time too. Experience was great although I am aware recovery will be trickier with a toddler.

Dojo13 · 12/10/2024 08:14

I’m also choosing to have an elective c-section. Glad to hear everyone has had positive experiences. I know the recovery is harder but I am terrified of giving birth so I think it’s the best option for me.

fingerscrossedmumma · 12/10/2024 09:03

So I have never gone through this process before - do the NHS allow for electives or do they try and encourage "natural" (I hate that term so I apologise - I can't think of the right words!)

The thought of giving birth terrifies me so would prefer an elective if that is an option! But I didn't know it had to qualify for one?

Pheebz · 12/10/2024 10:02

I believe they can’t stop you from having a c section but they do have good reason to encourage vaginal births. Data shows that on the whole vaginal births carry significantly less risk to the mum and baby.

That said, I was all in for a vaginal birth last time but ended up having to be induced, then have an episiotomy and my daughter quickly pulled out with forceps - all without pain relief. It was horrendous and I am never going through that again - c-section for me this time!

Pheebz · 12/10/2024 10:03

@MrsKurz been thinking of you and hoping your scan went well.

24CRZZNKKA · 12/10/2024 10:25

@tigerlilli

I'm so sorry 😔

24CRZZNKKA · 12/10/2024 10:30

I started cyclizine yesterday and I think it helped with the nausea but at lunchtime I completely crashed energy wise, could barely get off the couch. Not great as I have a very busy schedule.

I will most likely be a planned section as had emergency one for first DC and planned for second.

I absolutely hate the recovery period and need to stay in for 2 days, if I could chose I'd be going for a vaginal birth.

I spent a lot of time in the birthing pool with first DC and I found it very relaxing.

I finally contacted midwives to get booked in, after last two mc I was delaying this. Haven't heard back yet though so don't have any dates for appointments or scans.

Considering booking a private scan for next week when il be roughly 7+5. Will it be worth doing it then? Worried I won't see much and it won't be particularly reassuring.

LeBonBon · 12/10/2024 10:42

@Tigerlilli so sorry about your loss.

I ended up with a planned CS last time because they induced me too early with my DD - they were concerned she was IUGR but came out 5lbs13oz at 38 weeks exactly. Definitely on the small side considering my height and size, but still healthy and may have hit 7lbs if been allowed to go to term or even longer.

Really hoping for a VBAC as I didn't even have a single contraction or any changes even though I'd had two pessaries and the gel. We just weren't ready 😞

I think I will refuse an induction this time (unless my cervix looks favourable) and book in an elective if I don't go into labour myself by 41 weeks.

california22 · 12/10/2024 10:44

@24CRZZNKKA from 7 weeks you should be able to see a heartbeat. For some people it is reassuring for others it's not so it depends how you feel about it? The only thing to be aware of is that sonographers at private scan places are very rarely trained medically to detect any issues as opposed to doctors at the early pregnancy unit (but they won't see you unless needed). With my first pregnancy I went for a private scan, we saw a heartbeat and then I misc. Looking back, I am pretty sure the heartbeat was not appropriate for gestation but nobody said a thing. So after that I never again went for a private scan. Not wanting to scare but just to make you aware of that xx

LeBonBon · 12/10/2024 10:49

Also I'm 10+3 today and still not had my scan appointment through.

A consultant called me at 9+6 trying to scan me that day but I was away for work, and then the hospital tried again at 10+0 but by the time I called them back they said all appointments were taken and they didn't propose a new date. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm really confused as surely they can't expect people to drop everything last minute to attend - what happened to scheduling them in advance? At my hospital last time it wasn't unusual to be in the waiting room 90 minutes after my appointment time still waiting to be seen. My work are good but it seems unrealistic for this to be OK with such short notice?

narns · 12/10/2024 10:51

@24CRZZNKKA I went for a private scan at 7+4 last week and found it reassuring. You can't see much to be honest, they are just a little blob, but it will let you know that it isn't ectopic or a blighted ovum and you will be able to see/hear the heartbeat.

Just do a bit of research into where you plan to go. You can get a lot clearer imaging with an internal scan and a lot of high street places offer external only. The problem with external is that it might be tricky to see properly at this gestation, so if they aren't able to offer internal, you might leave feeling more anxious.

We chose a private clinic and saw an obstetric consultant for our scan. He saw everything he needed to externally so there was no need for internal, but the option was there if necessary and I knew that we were in very good hands.

24CRZZNKKA · 12/10/2024 12:21

Thanks everyone

BrightGoose · 12/10/2024 13:15

I would say with a section there are things you cannot do after birth. You can’t drive for 6 weeks in the uk you have to have blood thinning injections for 10 days. You can’t do any heavy lifting or cleaning for a while so it comes with it’s own complications as does everything.

anyone feeling very week and shaky ? Even when I eat I’m feeling shaky don’t know what else to do

MrsKurz · 12/10/2024 18:56

@Pheebz it went really well! I am 5 days behind my last period date (but not a surprise to me), so I’m just over 7 weeks now. Heard a strong heartbeat. Symptoms have fully kicked in now, I feel like sh*t but I know it’s a good sign. Just need to get through the next few weeks. I know the second trimester is so much better.

GraySweatpants · 12/10/2024 22:24

It’s really surprising to see how many mums here end up having C-section. I genuinely thought the majority of us had vaginal births.

My first birth was a pretty positive experience I thought. Of course the pain was awful but I made my point of “give me all the drugs you’ve got” and after the epidural went in it was pure bliss! Then DD got distressed and nearly needed an emergency C-section but I luckily managed to push her out really quickly. The recovery was pretty quick too. Highly recommend vaginal birth if you have an uncomplicated pregnancy. 4 stars!

narns · 12/10/2024 22:29

Agree @GraySweatpants! Absolutely elect for a section if it's the best birth choice for you, but if you're going back and forth on the decision and worried about horror stories etc I just wanted to add that I had a really positive experience with my DD. Spontaneous labour, not instrumental etc. It did hurt like a bitch (no pain relief as not time!) but it was textbook really x
