Potty shots…should they be allowed?

Hi all
It makes me very uncomfortable when people post ‘potty shots’ on here, for me they should be private photos. I’ve seen a thread on here asking women to post potty shots which got alarm bells ringing. I work in children’s safeguarding so I don’t know if I’m just overly sensitive.

interested to know others thoughts? I am thinking about emailing mumsnet about it.

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

What exactly are you worried about? I think the term “potty shot” is worse than any image!

TooTiredOfThisShit · 18/08/2024 17:59

I work with kids, and it also makes me a bit uncomfortable. But in reality, it's not actually a picture of a baby's genitals, it's just a fairly grainy image, from which the child couldn't ever be identified. I don't think it's actually hurting anyone.

TripleESept24 · 18/08/2024 18:03

Well it wouldn't just be mum's net you'd have to be emailing about it. Potty shot is the term for it and all over the nub expert websites/Facebook pages etc. it really isn't how it sounds is it the photo itself shows nothing other than a scan photo.

I once received an e-mail in a professional capacity from an American colleague with a proud photo of their baby "going potty" for the first time in the footer. I don't think it was a mistake, they honestly thought everyone of even the slightest acquaintance would be as thrilled as they were with their child's "achievement".

‘Potty shot’ is what they are generally referred to on here and elsewhere. I thought it would be obvious that my concern is people posting photos of their babies genitals.

I don’t understand what you mean by the last sentence

Aren’t they photos of unborn babies when it’s not even obvious what sex they are? Never occurred to me to think it’s inappropriate.

It's hardly a photo of actual genitals though is it? It's a 2d scan photo which either shows something sticking out or not. To someone who doesn't know what they are looking for you wouldn't even really know what it is!?

quickturtle · 18/08/2024 18:20

I don't like seeing them. It's like the baby doesn't count as a human or something.. they wouldn't post a similar shot of their own undercarriage

Aussieland · 18/08/2024 18:21

I think it’s pretty weird tbh and the name is disgusting. Not sure I would be worried about safeguarding just think it’s a strange thing

FTMaz · 18/08/2024 18:22

I think you can clearly make out what it is. When I had a sex scan it was very obviously a penis. I would never dream of putting it online for strangers to look at.

Same.

OnAndOnAndonAgain · 18/08/2024 18:24

It's a scan picture , most of them you can't even tell

And? I wouldn't put a scan of my own bum on mumsnet

Irridescantshimmmer · 18/08/2024 18:44

It's gross, invasive and disrespectful to the child. I don't like it, I don't condone it, especially nowadays when images can be manipulated.

Thats you, wouldn't bother me it's just a scan

ineedtogwtoutbeforeitatoohot · 18/08/2024 19:15

I don't like it either. Not sure if it's safeguarding though.

Manipulate a scan photo? It's literally internal organs

No I don’t mean there are safeguarding implications as no child is being harmed directly I was just saying my line of work for context

It’s not internal organs it’s a photo of in between the legs which shows a penis or vagina

I know what you're getting at but really, a scan photo itself is a woman's womb! When you start to think like this, where does it stop.

But the woman has decided she is fine with publishing a picture of her womb… the baby obviously can’t consent.

I personally do find it odd how some women are so eager to post pictures of their unborn babies bits.

Shibr · 18/08/2024 19:42

I think this is bonkers. I would never post a photo of my womb, but I think possibly the results of your work is making you sound slightly depraved if that’s what comes into your head when you see a grainy black and white shot of a fetus.

BusyCaz · 18/08/2024 19:43

It's not actually a photo though, it is literally created by soundwaves bouncing off tissue. Nothing similar to a photo.

FTMaz · 18/08/2024 19:49

I’m actually really surprised how many people don’t have a problem with it. When the thread was creating asking for women to post their ‘potty shots’ there were quite a few who commented saying it was wrong, it was reported and removed.
