Potty shots…should they be allowed?

Hi all
It makes me very uncomfortable when people post ‘potty shots’ on here, for me they should be private photos. I’ve seen a thread on here asking women to post potty shots which got alarm bells ringing. I work in children’s safeguarding so I don’t know if I’m just overly sensitive.

interested to know others thoughts? I am thinking about emailing mumsnet about it.

It's not actually a photo though, it is literally created by soundwaves bouncing off tissue. Nothing similar to a photo.

It creates an image

Blisax · 18/08/2024 21:12

I do see where you are coming from OP but I think it's maybe based on who you'd share it with
Like I know this is a public forum, personally I wouldn't share here
But between my mummy friends on our group chat I would.. I don't really see that as wrong

I've seen alot of 'potty shots' being quite clear & some just either the 3 line kind of shape or something sticking out

Suppose it's down to a personal preference 🤷‍♀️

I absolutely get what you're saying. Why on Earth would you put up photos of a babies' genitals on the Internet in any form? That's not gender-reveal, it's just weird.

You wouldn't do it once they were new born would you? If you would, ask yourself why you would share a close-up image of a child's reproductive organs on the Internet. It's baffling.

wheresthebigcarrot · 18/08/2024 21:30

This is the most batshit I've ever known Mumsnet to be. Grainy black white and grey images of the inside of a womb being safeguarding. Jesus. Give your heads a wobble!!!

gamerchick · 18/08/2024 21:40

Any women has the right to post a picture of her uterus. A fetus doesn't have any rights until it's born. It's not recognised as a child where safeguarding can be triggered.

Beenhereforever1978 · 18/08/2024 21:41

It's really great that you're living a life where you think that's crazy @wheresthebigcarrot

There is a reason that the people who work on serious CSA cases have to be rested and replaced every few months lest they absolutely lose their minds over what they have to hear and see.

Honestly, can you think of any other situation where you would be proudly putting a childs' genitals on the Internet from the perspective of them on the toilet?

And yes, I get that it's a grainy image with very little context in many ways. It's still not OK.

And that makes it ok? This isn't about rights.

So when the fetus turns 18 can it sue? I'm being glib but hopefully you take the point.

gamerchick · 18/08/2024 21:43

Nobody gets to control a women's uterus. No matter how many twists and turns you attempt to make.

FTMaz · 18/08/2024 21:45

Clearly those mentioning ‘safeguarding’ haven’t read why I mentioned it. A foetus doesn’t have human rights so it isn’t safeguarded…I haven’t implied otherwise. I said due to my own experiences of working in child safeguarding I may have a different view to others. It hardly calls for me to be told to ‘give my head a wobble’.

I agree with you OP. I can’t believe that grown women think it’s acceptable to post their unborn child’s genitals online for the whole of MN to guess their gender (probably wrongly..)

Even the phrase ‘potty shot’ makes me uncomfortable. So immature.

so You see the foetus as just an extension of the woman’s uterus? Genuine question.

I don’t actually get what ‘potty shot’ means? I know what it is but not why they call it that? Am I being dim?

It's the woman's uterus but it's not the woman's genitals being shared online

It doesn't matter what I think. The contents of a woman's uterus is her business. Not yours or any other persons.

Agreed. So why post it online for strangers to comment on?

Nirvana baby tried to sue as an adult.

Starlightstarbright3 · 18/08/2024 21:53

Honestly I haven’t ever posted my son’s however never heard the term potty shot … I think the world has gone mad worrying about a grainy pic where you may or may not see something .

There's an absolutely massive area of law that is developing now regarding what parents have a right to 'Share' with regards to their children online before they are able to consent to it or legally able to have accounts if their own.

So technically you're right, currently you can indeed share photos of an unborn child from the perspective of you looking up at them from a toilet bowl. I don't think the OP has questioned whether one can, they have rightly questioned whether one ought.

bakewellbride · 18/08/2024 21:53

I agree op. The only people who have seen my kids' scan pics are me, dh, sonographer and close family in person. I'd never even show friends. They are very, very private and special photos to me. I find the idea of scan pics online sad, the child already on the internet before even being born. What a world. My kids are 6 and 2 now and I've never posted their photo online- it's up to them when they're older and can consent.

SummerSplashing · 18/08/2024 21:54

The world is going quite utterly mad 😳😳😳

we're running out of grips!

Righto, would you please post a grainy photo of your genitals from the perspective of your toilet bowl then?

I only showed the sex scan photos to my Mum (my partner was with me at the scan) and when I sent it her she was shocked that they actually photo from that angle. That’s what made me think about it properly and decided not to show anyone else. I shared my other scan photos with friends and colleagues but not that one.

Again…I don’t think that album cover would be allowed these days. Although it different as baby vs foetus isn’t that same argument.

Doesn't matter. Still not yours or anyone's else's business.

When things change, if they do. You can turn yourself inside out all you want.
