Just had my private anomaly scan at 19 weeks (nhs one in a few weeks). Baby is on the 82nd percentile! She said he's measuring about a week ahead. She's not concerned and everything looked perfect with heart kidneys cleft lip ect. He's just got quite big abdominal circumference and long legs/big feet! Has anyone else with previous children measured like this and the baby's not been huge. I'm imagining having to squeeze a 11lb baby with a big Buddha belly out right now!🤣

My friend recently had a little boy, 4 weeks ago! He was measuring big from the very beginning, towards the end she was having lots of growth scans and they were considering inducing her early, he ended up naturally making his appearance a week early and was a tiny little thing at 7lb 1oz. I've always been told take the growth measurements with a pinch of salt because it's not always reliable!

If the NHS think he's going to be big they'll give you additional scans, until then probably best to not picture birthing a giant😂

Ellsx6 · 07/10/2024 09:38

@veggiebuns I already have 3 growth scans booked in for the 3rd trimester from the 12 week appointment although no one has said why exactly..we will see! Why am I excited for my anomaly scan next week to see how big they officially make him 🤣😅 his dad is a big guy now but was 8lb7 at birth so not huge as a baby!

AdventuresInMothering · 07/10/2024 14:36

@Ellsx6 I've got monthly growth scans booked for 3rd tri as well, I assume cos my BMI is high because I don't have any other risk factors. I'm in my late 30s too but where I live that's such a normal age to be having babies they don't usually start calling mums "geriatric" til they're over 40!

Ellsx6 · 07/10/2024 14:50

@AdventuresInMothering yeah my bmi was a few points over so assume it's because of that no other reason why it could be..

horchatatresleches · 07/10/2024 14:59

No one has mentioned growth scans yet. Is that a 16 week appointment thing?

Has anyone else here had any problems with their teeth? The front of one of my molars broke off on Saturday, and I’ve never had anything like that before. I had a bit of cry this morning because I’m not in pain so the dentist can’t fit me in until November.

AdventuresInMothering · 07/10/2024 15:08

@horchatatresleches oh god poor you! My teeth are hurting in sympathy!

Not everyone has growth scans, they usually offer them if they have a reason to think your baby will be much bigger or smaller than average. I had one in my last pregnancy cos my belly measured big at 24 or 28 week check up, and cos I was marked down as high risk for gestational diabetes (BMI 30+, close relatives with diabetes). Not totally sure why I've already been booked for 3 this time but I'm guessing it's cos my BMI was 35 at booking. You don't have to attend extra growth scans and I did ignore the Dr who told me last time my son would be 10lbs (and he wasn't) but imo it's nice to see the baby extra times for free :)

I haven't but heard that it's either your hair or teeth that get ruined! It's annoying that the wait is so long..I can't even get into an nhs dentist where I've moved so hopefully no major problems as I pay private for checkups! I was told about the growth scans at my 12 week scan when I see the midwife after it. Some may be told at the 20 week scan if baby is measuring small/big ect

I lost two teeth in the year or so after having my son. I was so consistently sick all through my pregnancy with him, and they just.. crumbled. I was (am!) gutted, but I think it’s relatively common.
Just had my 16 week midwife appointment this morning (albeit im actually 17w2d) and she mentioned that she could refer me for growth scans if I wanted, but that was because my son was quite big, 9lb9. I said no cause it’s just extra hassle imo, and I’m not remotely worried, so doesn’t really make sense!
Midwife couldn’t find baby’s heartbeat this morning, tho she tried and tried. She could hear bashing about so she’s not concerned but it would’ve been nice to have heard the heartbeat really.

That's such a shame! I know at my private gender scan a 14 weeks we were literally watching the baby escape the doppler while the sonographer tried to record the heartbeat for a bear! Haha I'm glad you still had evidence of movements so you don't need to worry :)

Ellsx6 · 07/10/2024 17:03

@Muffin101 baby was probably just very active so hard to get their heartbeat. Every private scan I've been to he moves around so much they find it hard to actually get his heartbeat!

Coffeenotes · 07/10/2024 17:50

I've been getting quite a bit of pain/a heavy feeling in my groin and my midwife thinks it may be a pelvic organ prolapse. I'm booked in to see a physio on Thursday but wondered if anyone else had been through similar and had any advice please....

IMBCRound2 · 07/10/2024 19:32

I’m having extra scans because ivf + hopefully having a homebirth. It so lovely to see baby but I always feel bad because they wiggle away and I don’t know if they like them? Little one kept kicking the Doppler at my last appointment. I guess it’s very weird having some big thing pushed down on your home randomly!

Muffin101 · 07/10/2024 19:39

@ChristmasJumpers @Ellsx6 thanks, yes I think you’re right… which is a scary thought as my son was always absolutely bonkers on scans and he hasn’t really stopped since… a sign of things to come perhaps 😅 disappointed not to hear baby’s heartbeat as that’s always lovely but not the end of the world!

PlumpHobbit · 08/10/2024 08:44

Is anyone else still completely and utterly exhausted?

Everyone keeps on about how it'll suddenly lift but I just feel like I'm wading through treacle.

Also completely and utterly unmotivated? Have a project to do at work that's just so meh I can't motivate myself to start, but I have to get it done before maternity

Doesn't help I can't go to bed earlier as I'm a night owl so just won't fall asleep, and DH was up really early for a training course and I don't think I got back to sleep

Feels like you're just expected to get on with it and power through 😔

26dX · 08/10/2024 08:46

@PlumpHobbit 18 weeks and still going to bed at like 8pm like a little old lady😂 I thought I'd feel better but still taking 1 anti sickness a day as well. Was a breeze with my first but struggling second time round!

Paperboats · 08/10/2024 09:16

Hey all,
I hope you don't mind me joining this thread? I've actually been reading since the beginning but I've been too nervous to post, kind of a tempting fate thing after 3 previous losses over the last two years (37, no living children). I'm now at 17+4 and my anxiety is still getting the better of me. I hoped that after the 12 weeks scan I would let myself be excited, but instead I've been finding out about I competent cervix and having private scans every two weeks! I had some cramps across my belly yesterday and spiraled thinking something was wrong and I can't snap out of it, even though I heard the heartbeat with the midwife last wed. I'm on the train to London for work and my hormones are so wild I feel like crying for absolutely no reason :D x

Ah bless you, I think even without any previous losses or issues we can all be anxious but can't imagine how you're feeling, nothing anyone can say or do to ease the anxiety but welcome 🫶🏼✨

  • can I add my daughter is 3 and still gives me anxiety 😂 I think we'll always worry because we love them so much x
Ellsx6 · 08/10/2024 12:23

@PlumpHobbit yep unfortunately it's like I got to 19 weeks and the exhaustion maxed out. I've been having a 3hr nap in the late afternoon then sleeping from about 11pm until 10am😅

Ellsx6 · 08/10/2024 12:26

@Paperboats welcome!🤍 I'm sorry to hear you're experiencing high anxiety still..even though I've had no losses before and this is my first pregnancy I'm still so anxious so can't imagine how you feel! Have you spoke to the midwife about your anxiety if it's affecting your day to day life? Also may I ask how you found out you had a competent cervix..any symptoms or anything? X

Ellsx6 · 08/10/2024 13:40

Finally 5 days of trying to contact the midwife I get through just to say contact the gp. Contact my gp and I can't be seen for 3 weeks. My headaches are turning so intense and I've been taking paracetamol non stop. Got my own blood pressure machine and I'm just a few points over 'high blood pressure' I am honestly shocked at the service here!

26dX · 08/10/2024 14:13

@Ellsx6 that's awful, please just walk into mat triage or A&E, better safe than sorry. Appalling service!! X

Ellsx6 · 08/10/2024 14:18

@26dX I've contacted triage and they won't see me as I've not 20 weeks yet (litterally 4 days until I am!) I went to a&e at about 14 weeks about heavy anal bleeding I'm on blood thinners so wanted to be checked over incase I should stop them. I sat for 5 whole hours and they said contact the midwife if it continues contact the midwife and she said contact the gp so I waited for an appointment with them for a few weeks and that was that problem resolved🤦🏾‍♀️ it is honestly quite scary how bad the lack of care is and I'm worried about giving birth here. Unsure if I should try and switch trust but I've had all of my extra scan dates through ect so would probably be a ballache to change. And I wonder if the other trust near me is just the same?! It's an hour from the hospital if I move trust so probably not amazing if I'm in labour!

Contact the department who commenced you on blood thinners. If it's an anticoagulant this should be injections whilst pregnant. If you're on an anticoagulant for risk of blood clots, your risk increases whilst you are pregnant. There are certain tests you can do to ensure you aren't under or over anticoagulated and your bleeding vs. Clot risk should definitely be assessed.

The blood thinners won't cause bleeding but can make it more obvious. It's important the reason for the anal bleeding is investigated usually with your GP.

Anyone else get baby kicks that make you physically jolt? I’m 19 weeks (can’t believe I’ll be 20 in a few days and half way!!) and it’s mostly flutters but every few days I’ll feel more of a kick. But a few times I’ll get maybe 3 kicks in a row and each time my whole body will uncontrollably jolt. It’s really bizarre 😅

LV1987 · 08/10/2024 15:37

Hi everyone, hope you're all getting on well.

I had a private gender scan on Sunday afternoon... We've got the results in an envelope waiting for my Step-Sons to visit during half term. It's really hard knowing the answer is in the house so OH has hidden it 😂

We also got a 4d sneak peek at their face, and it's switched my allegiance to team girl! I'm not sure what it was, but there was something more girly about their little features. Still can't believe there is an actual baby in there, after 5 years of disappointment it just doesn't feel like real life 🥹

Had my 16 week midwife appointment this morning (at 16+6) and was a bit underwhelmed to be honest! She couldn't get her computer to work, so wrote my BP etc down on a paper towel (not even a note book!), and she'd forgotten her doppler so I didn't get to hear baby's heart beat.

I'm also booked in for 4 weekly growth scans from 28 weeks until 40 (if I get there). In our case it's because that's normal procedure for an IVF pregnancy here. When I asked why, they explained it's because IVF babies tend to be small... Even though I measured 5 days ahead at my 12 week scan 🤔 I think the system can be very "computer says no" at times, but absolutely not complaining about the opportunity to see baby a few extra times!
