Well that was frustrating

Went for first NHS scan this afternoon

Went with full bladder as instructed, waited over an hour without knowing they were running late (or I'd have had a wee then got a cup of tea or something), got to the point I just had to wee as it was hurting

Got called in, baby wasn't in the right position for screening measurements, so went and had another bottle of lucozade before having another go

Still not co operating so have to go back Monday to have another go for measurements, apparently if they can't get them Monday they will have to do a quad test which only does downs not Edwards and the other one it would need to be at the 20 week they could test for them, which I really don't want as it will be all the more upsetting if they are picked up that late

Does anyone know if you can get private Downs etc test?

There was a little heartbeat and hands and feet, which is at least some reassurance, but the worry still can't be alleviated without the proper screening test and of course we don't know if it'll be able to be done Monday, as the same could happen again. Plus if they're running majorly late, the blood section closes at an hour after I'm due for my appointment so then what will happen?

At least there was a little heartbeat but the screening feels a major thing I need to know is ok

Ellsx6 · 06/09/2024 16:59

@PlumpHobbit sorry you've had a crap time today. Congratulations on baby's heart beating! You can get a Nipt test private that tests for all the 3 things It's around £500 where I am but different in each area!

So I’m not really sure but think I’ve felt some movement! I’m 15 weeks and was sitting on sofa and had this pop feeling in my lower tummy that made me think of those fidget toys that were really popular. Being pregnant has made me realise how much grumbles and movements tummy’s have and it seems so hard not knowing if it’s baby or gas.

Ellsx6 · 06/09/2024 19:49

@GlitteringCat I've been having a few pops and just brushing it off as gas because I really can't tell if it's gas or baby it's strange how much noise your belly makes and you don't realise usually!

Jellybelly888 · 06/09/2024 19:58

Anyone else feel like they have put weight on in weird places? My chin, hips and back are so chubby right now!!

Ellsx6 · 06/09/2024 20:36

@Jellybelly888 yep my chin and back fat is another level. My self confidence is 0 right now haha

PlumpHobbit · 06/09/2024 20:42

I was already rather plump, so probably not as noticeable 😨

ChristmasJumpers · 06/09/2024 21:39

No weight gain in strange places, but I was bigger at the start of this pregnancy and have a shelf over my c section scar, so my new bump is wobbly at the bottom and I can't enjoy it as much 😣

PlumpHobbit · 06/09/2024 21:40

I'm fretting about not being able to get the measurements for the screening test Monday, as what if baby refuses to cooperate again?

It will mean having to wait until the 20 week scan, so would need to tell people as presumably by then there will be a bump, but it'll be awful having to then say it was one of the awful conditions and we had to make a decision- it'll feel like we can't properly celebrate being pregnant

I've looked at the private costs but they're extortionate, I'd have gone up to 100 for peace of mind but they're 400 and up, that's a he'll of a lot of money

It's making me worry. We have a couple of scan photos and they're really blurry and don't properly look like a baby, bar a very vague head and body

I'm good at catastrophising so this isn't helping!

I'm surprised the NHS don't have the transvaginal scanner things, that's what they used for the 9 week private one. I've messaged the private clinic to see if there's anything they can do

Apparently my womb is tilted back, which was picked up at the private scan

For love nor money, baby was not moving, despite all the wriggling and bouncing I did! Bar a bit of feet wiggling!

Not yet, it’s all bump, but I was reminiscing over photos of last time earlier and couldn’t believe how fucking wide my face got by the end 😂 I was unbelievably sick the whole pregnancy last time so hadn’t put on any weight really but my jaw and nose just seemed so wide! Pregnancy is weird 🤣

Ellsx6 · 06/09/2024 22:19

@ChristmasJumpers no c section over hang here but I did lose a good 8 stone a couple years ago so have a saggy pouch at the bottom of my belly too so I'm not really embracing the bump just feel like my fatty bits have been pushed out to be more noticeable so feel really uncomfortable 😖

Ellsx6 · 06/09/2024 22:25

@PlumpHobbit nhs do have trans vaginal scanners..I had one done at 7 weeks with nhs and they used one maybe just the hospital you went too?.. the lady I see weekly for private scans said baby's with Edwards/pateaus very commonly have very obvious defects on scans. Someone she scanned her baby had 3 eyes , intestines on the outside of the stomach and about 10 fingers per hand all picked up at 11 week private scan. So hopefully god forbid anything like that was wrong they'd be able to tell by looking at baby? Also please remember it's very very unlikely that baby will have any of the 3 above. I know nothing anyone says can stop the anxiety but if you can't have control over it, don't stress about it. Baby may play ball on Monday you never know until you get to Monday. I always eat some fizzy sweets and drink a bottle of fizzy Lucozade before a scan so baby moves enough to get an in depth look at everything. Try and enjoy your weekend and keep busy. Monday will come before you know x

Ah I wonder why I wasn't offered one, can they use them to get measurements?

Baby is obviously already practicing being as stubborn as its mother! I did down a bottle of lucozade once we were sent out for a bit before attempt 2 (and didn't half feel slooshy!) But nope baby wasn't cooperating for love nor money, bar some wriggly feet!

Interesting to know that Edwards babies look visibly to have problems, I think he said generally all looked OK, but looking at the print outs it just looks like a blurry shape to me (I know I have 0 training!) He did a few angles etc. The photos from the private scan look so much clearer, but I guess that's because they're transvaginal, so in there with baby, rather than my blubber.

It's so hard not to worry, I'm great at doing that at the best of times, usually I'd take some Kalms but you can't when pregnant!

Reading up, you can't even have the Quad test yet so are just kind of in limbo

I did look at private costs, and would have been willing to go up to £100, but can't afford £400-£500 that's just too much despite wanting peace of mind

Just got to hope baby plays ball Monday.

I hadn't really had any hunch about gender and of course they can't tell yet, but I have just suddenly got a strong wave of "it's a girl" because it's being so stubborn!

Ellsx6 · 06/09/2024 22:54

@PlumpHobbit I'm having a boy and he always plays ball so yes probably a girl!🤣🤣

The 2 week wait for the screening results was so hard too as I just kept saying I'll be 14 weeks when I find out it's to far if anything's wrong so I get exactly how you feel! If I was you I'd go private again for a scan and ask if they can do a good in depth look and give you a NT measurement. Mine were able to and the nt was always between 1.3mm and 1.6mm indicating there wasn't really a high chance of problem so that was reassuring.

I agree £400 is crazy hence why we didn't. We can't afford that when we're preparing for a new baby.

Remember the genetic testing aren't 100% either and there's still a chance it comes back low risk and baby's born with a condition so even if you were to get a low risk result we're not in the 'safe zone' apparsntly nhs screening test aren't really amazing either and give out incorrect results or it wasn't picked up. I think the quad test can be done at 16 weeks if baby doesn't play ball at 12...
It's worth to mention my mums had 4 children starting at 21 and last at 35 and she's never had no testing and all baby's born fine. You see it's very uncommon!

Ellsx6 · 06/09/2024 22:55

@PlumpHobbit from what I can gather transvaginal gets baby facing down not from side profile so wouldn't of been able to measure NT from that position anyway

PlumpHobbit · 06/09/2024 23:10

@Ellsx6 that's an idea about using another private scan, do you think they have better/clearer equipment or could we risk baby being difficult again (I'm already considering a private scan at 16 weeks as I'm too nosy and want to know the gender!)

Is there a time we'd need to do it by? I think he said I'm 12.5 today and understand the window is quite narrow and I'm getting close to cut off - probably wouldn't be until the weekend due to work

I think that would be even sadder, thinking your result strongly implied you were OK, only to not be 😥

How is everyone feeling symptoms wise? Has anyone’s morning sickness and nausea started to ease? I’m 13+2 and no let up yet.

Just to say solidarity, same, I'm now 15 weeks today and had nausea first trimester but actual vomiting so far in second trimester - it's gotten much worse... another one of those possibilities you don't always hear about. "It'll get better now", they said... Nope! Got much worse. Have since spoken to other women who had the same.

I've been quite sick the past few weeks and having to eat very limited bland food. Little, bland and often helps. Filtered or mineral water. And sleep.

Hope you're managing it (what's working for you?) and feeling ok!

Thank you for the response, sorry to hear you’re feeling it too!

I’m patiently waiting to wake up feeling like a new woman but like you, it seems to be getting worse.

Rest is really the only thing I’ve found eases symptoms but that car sickness feeling is constant. The vomiting comes as soon as I lay eyes on a toothbrush.

Have you thought about taking any medication?

Edited

My little one decided she was auditioning for cirque du soleil in her scans and refused to get into a normal position (got a great picture of her in full splits !) which was both amazing and adorable - but also absolutely useless for scans.

Thankfully they were able to see me later that day and she had moved and decided to be helpful for all of thirty seconds.

so there’s always hope that take two will be a success- they are little people and they do move!

m00ngirl · 07/09/2024 11:06

@PeachMartin has yes same, also looking forward to "the glow" as am currently working with "the eyebags"... toothbrush is also key vomming time for me, I don't know what it is. I personally haven't considered medication as I have quite a high bar before I'll take anything and it's manageable, I'm not losing water or weight, when I am sick not much comes up it's just really unpleasant. But I know a lot of ladies here had it worse and did take meds in first trimester, are you considering it?

Oddly adrenaline seems to help too? Like I'm mostly ok at my desk at work and am so distracted but have been sick at lunch time and before/after work. I've had some rough weekends as well

Moomoo20 · 07/09/2024 11:56

Tw 💔 loss

I should be 11 weeks today however I had some pink light bleeding this morning so I went to the hospital and had an ultrasound and internal scan and they confirmed no heartbeat baby stopped growing about seven weeks. Absolutely heartbroken after seven months of trying for this baby. I just feel so numb never been through this before 💔
I had similar bleeding with my daughter and everything was fine, so I just went to the hospital alone thinking it would be okay. I'm just in complete shock.

Onthedouble123 · 07/09/2024 12:40

@Moomoo20 in so sorry to hear that 💔 it's genuinely heartbreaking. I suffered a loss last year and there's just no words to make it better really.
I hope you have good support around you. Be very kind to yourself. There's no one right way to feel or one right way to deal with it- just whatever feels right for you. Sending you hugs and strength. Xx

Onthedouble123 · 07/09/2024 12:45

@m00ngirl @PeachMartin I'm also not feeling any better into 2nd trimester 😩
I did think I was starting to earlier this week but think it's the adrenaline for me too as my days off work have been horrendous.
Obviously don't want to take time off work but, equally, I really don't want to hold myself together for work and then have zero capacity to spend quality time with my little girl when I'm off 😔
I've missed out on so much with her already this pregnancy and the guilt of splitting yourself between the two children feels like it's starting already! When I was pregnant with my little girl I could just take it as easy as I wanted and so feeling torn about spending time with her but also getting plenty of rest to keep myself in best shape for the little one growing inside me too! Xx

Jellybelly888 · 07/09/2024 13:17

@Moomoo20 i am so sorry to hear this. I was part of the ‘Nov 24 Babies’ group on here and went for a 10 week scan and baby had died at 8w2d. It was utterly devastating.

Take time to process it all because the shock and grief will come in waves. You don’t need to rush feeling better. I hope the hospital is being supportive and explaining your options. Sending love xx
