Hi everyone and welcome to thread 3.
Please ask if you’d like the link to the private Facebook group. It expires after a couple of days so I won’t add it to this post.
If you’re new to the thread, we are a friendly and supportive bunch all in it together and hoping to welcome our new additions in November 2024!

@strawberrycake12 star snugs ! And a good white noise machine ! X

i never had a white noise with my DD who is now nearly 10! 😕 do they really work? x

taytay2020 · 23/04/2024 12:46

@piechipsgravy @SouthwestSis @y0rkier0se oh gosh ok, thanks for the advice! I think I'm going to have to try and move it cos if it did take that long it would be disastrous. Eeeeek.

1yearplan · 23/04/2024 12:51

@strawberrycake12 I've not bought anything just yet, although I haven't been able to resist having a browse at some baby clothes online and in the shops. I've got a few things in mind that I'd like to buy though, like Ewan the sheep (white noise machine)

@Bratzy re finding out the sex of the baby, I think the 12 week scan would be a bit early to be able to see anything. However, in my last pregnancy, one of the other mum's looked at our 12 week scan pictures and used the 'nub theory' to predict the sex of the baby and she was correct for me.

UnravellingTheWorld · 23/04/2024 12:59

@strawberrycake12 you cannot do without a sling. Trust me on this 😄

My advice is don't go overboard with buying things because people will give you gifts. We ended up with ENTIRELY too many 3-6m clothes the first time around!

sabretoothtigger · 23/04/2024 13:49

Out of interest, did you have a pushchair as well as a sling @UnravellingTheWorld ? I've been wondering how feasible just baby carrying is until they can walk. I guess a lot of that depends of lifestyle and location, but would be easier for me in many ways.

Meatballsandpasta · 23/04/2024 14:02

@sabretoothtigger we're hoping to not buy a pram... just use a sling or carrier until they can walk. I'm prepared to laugh at myself in about a year's time though 😁

sabretoothtigger · 23/04/2024 14:04

Haha, me too! That's why I thought I'd ask some experienced mums and see if they just fall about laughing, cause that'll tell me the level of insanity in this plan 😂

Meatballsandpasta · 23/04/2024 14:04

My thoughts on what to buy for a first baby is that there's a lot you only need for a couple of months and then it's useless - and a lot of that can be rented nowadays. Even clothes. Saves space and money - a win win!

I think it partly depends on the baby - some just hate being worn. But we have a "sling library" near us and we're planning to just keep trying until we find one baby likes.

Also with a November baby there's less chance of them overheating in a sling than if they're a summer baby, but once it gets warmer you/they might hate being worn.

waryandbored · 23/04/2024 14:21

Slings are fab and I’m a big fan of baby wearing but I think you will definitely want a pram as well. You can get quite hot and bothered with a sling on so being able to put them in a pram is helpful. Prams are also great at being able to carry stuff for you!

My DS started walking at about 15 months but there’s no way he’d have been able to walk around a supermarket or to the park until the last couple of months (he’s 2y 3m now). Even now, we use the pram a lot because he’s slow, easily distracted and often wants picking up if he’s walking.

Oh yes absolutely, have both. You don't want to carry the baby ALL the time. But there are going to be a few times when you have no choice but to carry the tiny dictator in the sling while pushing a pushchair, and there's just no way around it 😅

Kinsters · 23/04/2024 14:36

@Bratzy you probably wouldn't be able to see at 13 weeks - you might though, especially if the baby is a boy. With my last pregnancy I had a scan at 14 weeks and we'd wanted a surprise but his willy was so obvious!

That might be doable when baby is tiny, but when they're about 9 months you will not want to carry them everywhere! And they might not walk for 18 months. Best of luck - you must have biceps of steel!

MrsS11 · 23/04/2024 14:43

Hello! Can I join please? I was in the Dec chat but I had an early scan on Saturday, which put me at 8 weeks, due 30th November. Booking appointment is tomorrow, and this is baby number 4; others are 9, 6 and 20 months.

sabretoothtigger · 23/04/2024 15:06

"tiny dictator" 😂😂😂hilarious, and oh goodness, yes it would be, being a mix of both me and OH!

Thank you all for input on sling wearing and baby carrying! Pram it is!

@MrsS11 congratulations, and welcome. I'm also right on the cusp of Nov/Dec so won't know until my dating scan which thread to be in. We might be thread hopping together. I've also got my booking in this week. Hope yours goes well tomorrow.

SouthwestSis · 23/04/2024 15:17

@strawberrycake12 I think there are remarkably few things that you ACTUALLY need for a newborn. One thing I loved was a soft stretchy-wrap style sling so you can have baby on you whilst your hands are free to do other things which comes in very handy.

I do also have a pram cos it's nice to be able to put them down (your back will thankyou when they get bigger) plus you can dump all of your crap in the bottom.

My other top tip is do not buy "outfits" for your little one until they are at least 3m, yes they look cute but they are a pain in the ass and will just get poop and vomit on. Vests and sleepsuits all the way. The same with "baby shoes", yes they look cute but they are useless for a non mobile baby, cost ridiculous amounts, environmentally terrible.

Kinsters · 23/04/2024 15:44

@sabretoothtigger I'm right on the edge of October/November, there's always a few earlier or later so don't worry too much. In my Jan 2020 group we ended up with babies born in November, December, January and February!

I liked the pram for taking DD for a walk, out and about I mostly used a sling though.

Kinsters · 23/04/2024 15:47

Oh I meant to add, I tried to get by without a double pram when DS was born and we actually managed fine with DD in the pram and DS in the sling apart from going out for walks which I found too hot and uncomfortable with DS in the sling.

piechipsgravy · 23/04/2024 16:07

My bloods still aren't back 😞 feeling guilty as I thought they'd be back yesterday but it's now looking like I'll be off for a 3rd day- but don't feel like I can go back on what I said and now go in when I still haven't had results? Also obviously the longer they take the more I worry there's something wrong!

CurlyWurly1991 · 23/04/2024 17:23

Interested in the what to buy for baby chat. I have already acquired a bag of reusable nappies, bouncer and travel cot.
Have literally zero left from our DD because we sold it all - a lot only months before deciding to TTC 🤦‍♀️
Am thinking we will need a pushchair and couple of changing mats as a minimum. Need the car seat. Not sure about sleeping (will need to rearrange our bedroom - we have a super king size bed that takes up almost all the room, then a small box room). I did cosleep with DD for a long time. Maybe we will get a Moses basket for the beginning. Will be trying to spend as little as possible and get whatever we can second hand.

CurlyWurly1991 · 23/04/2024 17:24

@piechipsgravy please don’t feel guilty, you are doing the right thing.

1yearplan · 23/04/2024 18:01

Echoing what @CurlyWurly1991 says @piechipsgravy. Please don't feel guilty. Your health and your baby's health come first.

piechipsgravy · 23/04/2024 18:36

Thank you @CurlyWurly1991 @1yearplan
The GP has agreed to ring and chase the hospital tomorrow so hopefully won't be waiting too long.

waryandbored · 23/04/2024 19:26

Hey everyone. I’ve been taking cyclizine for 4 days now and I don’t really think I’m feeling any better. I was being sick less but today it’s ramped up again. I have felt really nauseous for most of the day and can’t walk up the stairs or even into another room without holding back a heave. If I talk for more than 2/3 sentences then I am sick. I only feel ok while I’m eating, then as soon as I finish it’s back again.

I can’t even looking after my little boy properly. He’s been in front of the TV for several hours today because I just couldn’t move from the sofa. I’m also utterly exhausted.

It is honestly horrendous. I’m going to have to go back to the GP again as I’m due back to work Friday but at the moment there’s no way I can go back. I’m so down right now, really don’t know what else I can do to help myself.

@waryandbored that sounds so so hard I’m so sorry it’s been so bad for you. I would definitely go back to the GP as there are other medications you can try. I hope you get through this soon and it doesn’t last xx
