My friend was just moaning about how skint she is on maternity leave and it’s made me really worry about our finances! Has anyone thought of how long you might want off yet?

I took 11 months with my DS and would like to take the same this time but we are also worried about finances. Will see how the next few months go I guess!

Meatballsandpasta · 26/03/2024 15:56

My booking appointment is at 8+6 in a couple of weeks time. No date for the first nhs scan yet but we're having an early clinic one next week at 7+4 before they officially discharge us to routine antenatal care.

Meatballsandpasta · 26/03/2024 16:01

@Welshcake15 you are my new favourite person. DW went out at lunchtime to buy some Gin Gins for me and they WORKED. I then promptly fell asleep from the relief so I just feel altogether so much more human with a bit of good rest. Thank you so much for the recommendation. Not nauseous for the first time in about a fortnight. What the heck. I have the chewy and hardboiled ones. They're like Werther's Originals but spicy 🤣

hicketypickety · 26/03/2024 16:34

Congratulations to those of you with strong heartbeats and good measurements! Loz I am so sorry to hear your news, that's devastating, please do take care of yourself ❤️

Feeling a bit deflated today. Went for my second reassurance scan at EPU and she said the sac has grown and she could see embryo and heartbeat (tho she refused to measure it so I have no idea whether it was fast or slow or what). Last week was measuring somewhere between 5-6 weeks and today she measured it as six weeks (by dates I'd be 7+1).

She did say it was hard to get a measurement as I have an axial uterus but I left instead of feeling happy that we saw a heartbeat a bit deflated that it's not where it should be and that the progesterone is somehow delaying the inevitable. So hard 😕

She's said they'll see me again next week and they would scan me every week until the 12-14 week scan. I was planning on registering with the midwife if today went well but I still don't feel like I can. Might help if I was vomiting my guts up every three seconds but I just don't feel sick or have many symptoms at all. Bit of discomfort in my upper abdomen every now and again and really hungry but that's it.

Magicmushroomsauce · 26/03/2024 16:38

Hi everyone,

im the person from the other thread who had a bit of a worrying scan at 6+1. Anyway my follow up is tomorrow, I’ll be 8+2. My husband will be able to come with me which is good.

I’m having lots of symptoms, like exhaustion and all day nausea, so I’m hoping that’s a good sign.

I'll be taking a year off again. Absolutely loved it last time - staying home and kissing your baby all day is the best! (especially if you get paid for most of it). No, it's not cheaper, but you only get these months once.

I'll do what I did last time, I'll take about 9 months off and then my husband will take the remaining 3 months. It worked really well as it meant he got time at home with the baby too and I'm the higher earner so we got my salary back sooner.

piechipsgravy · 26/03/2024 17:01

@Sparksi I'm really torn! I want to take a year but I'm a teacher and last 3 months are 0 pay whereas if I go back mid July, I'd end up getting the 6 week holidays off on full day so then am essentially getting an extra 6 weeks mat leave full pay but would have to be back properly in September/October.

@hicketypickety so sorry it wasn't as it could be, it sounds like the skills of the EPU staff could do with some polishing. But try to focus on the positives as that is all really good news! Progesterone support can do great things but it can't keep a heartbeat going. One step at a time but that's a big step to see a heartbeat 😊

BellatrixK · 26/03/2024 17:07

Jellybelly888 · 26/03/2024 10:03

Progesterone ladies - what dosage are you on and how many times per day? My new consultant (who hadn’t even seen me yet) already wants to halve my dose, despite previous recurrent MC and me being on 2 x 400mg per day with my DS (my only live birth). I’m furious!

I’m on the same as you and got the same reasons: 2x400mg - one pessary in the morning, one at night. However, my previous pregnancy I was with a different team and on one… it was successful then too.

I’d definitely push for it staying the same though- why lower it if it’s working?!

I want to take 9 months off, my partner wants me to go back to work after 6 months but that will not be happening.

Try not to get too deflated @hicketypickety as others have said your baby has a heartbeat, measurements are not always accurate at this time they said that to me yesterday as she said position of it was just too awkward. I also haven't been advised on how fast the heart beat is and tbh didn't ask as I'm sure if they were worried they would say. Try to stay positive 🙏 I also have minimal symptoms other than stomach/bowel discomfort and the odd cramp.

Totally understand your nerves about registering, I said this to my gp who said to do it as they can support you at the same time when your anxious x good luck and I hope it turns out positive for you x

Obviously depends on where you work, but I took a whole year and then I got accrued holidays on top. So I got a year, back on pay roll for a few weeks, back to work for 2 weeks then Christmas holidays.

I had a November baby last time too. All being well I plan to go off from the start of November this time which is 2 weeks after I did last time.

1yearplan · 26/03/2024 17:40

@hicketypickety I'm sorry you've left the scan feeling deflated. At this stage they're so so tiny and each mm their off with their measurements can mean the difference between a few days. Perhaps today because it was difficult to see the dates are a little off? I don't really have any symptoms either and I know that feels scary.

If everything goes to plan with the baby, I won't be going back to work. I took a year off with my first and 18 months off with my second. We are moving just after the baby is born, so I'd planned on being off for a while to settle the big kids into life in a new country. I'm just praying this little one sticks around. I like the idea of having a chunk of time off work!!

y0rkier0se · 26/03/2024 18:09

@piechipsgravy have you looked into shared parental leave? You can take it all yourself and “return to work” during the Feb half term, Easter half term and summer hols to prolong your paid mat leave x

How’s everyone feeling?
just 5 weeks here and my symptoms are still quite mild.
I seem to have come down with a rotten cold which is not fun at all. I had covid at 6 weeks when I was pregnant in Dec and I’m sure it’s what caused the MMC (had a temperature).
so understandably feeling a bit nervous right now.

mrssunshinexxx · 26/03/2024 18:49

How exciting @1yearplan where are you relocating to? We plan to emigrate to Australia in a good few years time I wish it was tomorrow to be honest!

Bratzy · 26/03/2024 18:55

My symptoms are still mild as well. @CurlyWurly1991 it's understandable that you're nervous, but hopefully it's just a cold and everything will be fine.

J18 · 26/03/2024 18:57

@CurlyWurly1991 I'm also 5 weeks today and just bloating after eating and very minor twinges. Feel very normal other than that so doesn't seem very real yet!

@Sparksiit took us a year of ttc so managed to save for mat leave in that time so hoping I can take the full year, was planning on doing some shared but DH will be starting a new job in September so won't be eligible 😕

I'm just getting over a rotten cold too. Had to take a few days off work which I never do! Didn't even know I was pregnant yet but I'm guessing that was what made me feel worse than usual with the same symptoms.

Sorry to hear about the MMC. Rest up and I hope you get better soon and nothing adverse happens to baby.

Mummysparrow · 26/03/2024 19:07

Random question but has anyone started to find their husband really irritating since pregnancy. I will be honest, he was a little annoying before but now I have no patience for it and I am constantly giving him dirty looks and he is making me cry quite easily (he isn't being particularly nasty but I feel extra sensitive to his sarcasm).
I think I am 6 +6 and I feel time is going very slowly 😂

CurlyWurly1991 · 26/03/2024 19:35

Thanks @Bratzy @J18 @Rolly321
It’s just the worry about another loss. I don’t think you can ever experience pregnancy the same way after that.
Think I might need to take time off work, too. I also never do that but am not going to jeopardise my health/pregnancy for my job.

I can only imagine how hard it must be. Sending you lots of love and strength to get through the scary bit!

Definitely don't worry about taking time off work, if it's pregnancy related they can't even include it on absence scores etc (at least at my work).
