@Ihatewinding just wondering if you have any more suggestions for congestion I have been trying both of your suggestions plus other nasal sprays & snot suckers but it’s still really bad this is goin on more than 3 weeks now I have had wee man @ the doctors 3 times & in hospital 4 observation once. Some days it’s so bad he struggles taking the bottle & spits up a lot it’s really upsetting as I feel no matter what I do I’m not helping sorry 4 the rant but 2day he’s been bad 🤦‍♀️ he was premature so wondering is that a factor 2 why it so bad
Any help so appreciated

Has anyone else noticed their baby being really gassy and passing lots of really foul smelling farts? Our little girl is just over 3 weeks and the past 4/5 days has been passing lots of farts that smell and her stool has been more loose, initially yellow but this evening it was green. It’s not frequent loose stools just once or twice a day, but I’m more worried about the gas. We’ve been giving her Aptimal to supplement breastfeeding since birth but for the past two days I switched to Aptimal comfort for colic to see if it helps and there’s not been much change. She’s also really fussy after a feed and doesn’t go straight to sleep. Once she’s asleep she sleeps 3 hours with formula and 1/2 hours with breastmilk as usual but it now takes a good 45 mins-1 hour to get her to sleep after each feed. I have no idea if this is related to the gassiness.

Any advice would be hugely appreciated. Also going to speak to the health visitor tomorrow for advice.

@Ebonythoughts my LO one 4 weeks tomorrow and for last 4 days or so we’ve getting started the witching hr in the evening where she cannot settle herself, she has quite ally of wind & wee pains, cries feeding or anything u try to do with her etc.. it’ll last an hr or 2 until she exhausts herself and will conk out and sleep a few hrs after it.
anyone else entered this phases? The pains seems so sore too 😔😭

Thewildthingsarewithme · 11/03/2024 05:07

@Ebonythoughts could it be CMPA? Symptoms include green poo and foul smelling gas, does she have mucus on her nappies?

redxlondon · 11/03/2024 08:48

My baby has been really gassy, lots of farts. He doesn’t cry but makes lots of noises during the night after a feed. It kept me up for 3 hours. I was told I could just leave him if he’s not crying, but I find it hard not to check on him if he’s making noises. What do you all do during the night? If baby is noisy but not crying, do you just try to ignore and sleep?

Do you think he could have reflux? It can make them sound hoarse/congested and the not taking a bottle/spit up would fit with reflux too.

Cheetocat · 11/03/2024 10:03

@redxlondon I just sleep through his grunting, as soon as he's distressed and crying I'm rushing to get him though!

Gardenfingers23 · 11/03/2024 10:09

@Ebonythoughts my LO has suffered with sore tummy /gas/colic since birth it seems. She’ll be 3 weeks on weds and it’s perhaps improving a bit but the nights are pretty horrendous. She doesn’t appear to suffer during the day weirdly but it gets to 5/6pm and then the screams and cries start after feeds but feeding is the only thing to calm her. We’re using infacol but not sure it’s really making that much difference, we just have to jiggle her about and try and get the gas out which helps and then just sway her until she eventually calms down and falls asleep. Last few nights have followed similar pattern of inconsolable crying 7-10pm and 2-4.30am. It’s heartbreaking seeing her so unhappy and what looks to be in pain but she’s fed, changed and we’re doing what we can to release the gas so just have to hope this phase passes quickly
…oh and noise cancelling headphones are a lifesaver for the OH 🤣

Sunshineclouds11 · 11/03/2024 10:28

Very gassy here too, I can't say they smell though and along with green poo I'd get some advise from HV/GP.

I don't get them up when grunting or moving round. But I do pop my head over the Moses every now and again.

She also didn't settle after a feed for awhile and I found putting her on my chest with legs scrunched up, patting bum, rocking up and down she managed to get rid of some gas. It was the only she was comfortable and would fall asleep.

Angelslookingafterus · 11/03/2024 11:18

@RachLeeds not sure would reflux only be happening now @ 10+ weeks is there anything I can try just 2 help him I would try anything atm

RachLeeds · 11/03/2024 12:41

@Angelslookingafterus sorry I thought you had a younger baby. Yeah, reflux would usually start earlier than 10 weeks. Hopefully other posters might have some ideas for you x

Also, anybody with a colicky baby - Colief works miracles but it is expensive for a tiny bottle. GP’s aren’t suppose to prescribe it because of the cost but it’s the best one.

CheeseAndCrackersx · 11/03/2024 12:51

In terms of wind problems etc, those which can now use gripe water have they found much change?

Yes!
I just dip her dummy in it and she pumps away

CheeseAndCrackersx · 11/03/2024 13:06

Ah thank you @Sunshineclouds11 😀
Little man is 1 month tomorrow so he can finally have it x

HopeAndStrength · 11/03/2024 13:40

Hi everyone, my little man is 5 weeks old and I've noticed that he has a developed a preference for sleeping with his head looking to the right. He resists turning to the left, has anyone else experienced this? I'm a first time mum.

Ihatewinding · 11/03/2024 13:59

@Angelslookingafterus it's miserable isn't it and you've got a week on me and yours must be worse if needed observing at hospital 😢

Their airways are so small and they struggle to clear them, especially if prem. We have found a dummy helps as means baby swallows the snot, but does seem to mean bad wind so swings and roundabouts. I was wondering about reflux too but I think it's actually post-nasal drip and he's choking on the snot going down his throat from the back of his nose 😖

He's still resistant to being laid flat so holding him/slinging him for most of the day to help drain the snot.

But honestly I think main thing is gonna be time sadly. Take any offers of help and get them to hold the baby upright and both of you get some sleep. Check minimum weights on any slings, usually at least 8lbs.

Also given he's struggled so much feeding it may be his latch is poorer than usual so when well and recovered you could look into underlying tongue tie. Can affect bottle feeding and contribute to feeding and potentially speech issues long-term.

Only other things I can think of would be keeping temp 18-20 and humidity around 55-60%, seems to help with the sneezing. And Snufflebabe vapour oil if not tried it?

Really hope out babies get better soon 🤞🏻

Ihatewinding · 11/03/2024 14:17

@Ebonythoughts did the green poo start after using the comfort/colic formula? As that is a recognised side effect.

Seems like colic is hitting everyone now! 😴 But do agree to consider reflux and CMPA if symptoms seem extreme, a 2 week trial of dairy free formula or diet exclusion if breastfeeding is unlikely to hurt. You may find you get fobbed off by HVs/GPs though, we did with our first who had both. Tongue tie can contribute too - we had the trifecta!
Word of warning, gaviscon for reflux can cause bad constipation so use cautiously for the worst feeds to start and gradually increase number of feeds using (if helps).

@HopeAndStrength sometimes their muscles can be a bit tight on one side. You can try encourage him to look the other way during tummy time to stretch things out? If still an issue bring it up at baby's 6-8 week check. Sometimes babies can develop something called positional torticollis, especially if always held/sleep in one position, and can need a physio referral.

HopeAndStrength · 11/03/2024 14:37

Thank you @Ihatewinding I'll see how he responds to some gentle encouragement during tummy time and switch the way that I position him for nappy changes etc. I have call booked with the health visitor for next week I think.

A1b2c3d4e5f6g7 · 11/03/2024 15:30

For anyone breastfeeding with wind and green poos, I was told to do laid back feeding positions, as the milk was possibly flowing too fast and making her gulp too quickly. I've done this the last few days and it has really helped. No more greeny loose poos, and better on the wind front, but still some wind unfortunately

Hankthehonk · 11/03/2024 15:34

@HopeAndStrength I have been going to baby massage classes and the lady who takes them is also a pediatric physio. She advised someone else about this turning preference in class the other day - she said turn them fully onto the side they DO have a preference for as this will encourage them to look the other way in order to look up, and develop muscles on both sides.

A1b2c3d4e5f6g7 · 11/03/2024 15:34

@HopeAndStrength we got a private physio with my first to check it if was a physical problem or just a preference. It was really well worth the money for one session. Advice was to move their head to a different position regularly. And switch up which end of the crib you lay them in. There are exercises if it is torticulosis.

We also got the Babymoov Lovenest pillow (for daytime sleeping only/ the pram / bouncer etc. If they favour one side/ sleeping position it can lead to a flat patch, which worsens the problem

Ebonythoughts · 11/03/2024 16:48

@Ihatewinding yes the green poo started after the formula change. Health visitor doesn’t seem worried because baby is feeding ok and not visibly in any pain/discomfort. I’m more worried about the frequent and pungent wind than anything else… worried it could mean problems with digestion.

My parents were staying, which is why Dh and I went out on Saturday. He’s at work then at football game all night. Parents have left and I feel broken. I usually love alone time but it’s all changed post baby. I’m just so sad.

I understand this wholeheartedly!
During pregnancy, I was adamant I didn't want my mum staying over lots and that it would really annoy me.
Now, I cry every time she leaves 😂 I constantly keep asking her to come back, the days are so lonely!

Aw thanks for sharing.
It’s making me want to move, they’re a 6 hour drive away and it’s just so hard.
