@msp2023 it depends, mid way through a feed if I take him off the breast and squeeze I get a squirt. If I squeeze before a feed usually just drops, then it becomes a squirt if I keep at it. After a full feed and for some time after then just drops.

I should note I'm 6w pp, I think I only started noticing squirts at around 3-4w

I have a slightly odd question for those breastfeeding...

When you squeeze your boob/nipple, do you get a squirt of milk or some drops?
I'm trying to ascertain what may be 'normal' and whether my milk supply is sufficient.

I know this isn't the right way to do this but I'm just interested to see what this looks like for other BF mamas.
I only got a tiny squirt yesterday, normally it's just drops.

I don’t think that’s a good way to test, as the force of what comes out is about your flow, not the amount of milk. You could have a fast flow but low supply. The best way to know your supply is sufficient is number of wet/dirty nappies and weight gain, also if they settle after a feed. You could express, but that’s unreliable because some because have great supply but expressing by hand or machine doesn’t get much out compared to the baby.
Would recommend you go to a lactation clinic though for expert advice.

Thank you both @redxlondon @LavenderSweetPea

I know it's not a good indicator, I was just more intrigued than anything else! 🥰

DmcinT · 09/03/2024 09:03

just wondering are we waiting on anyone else or have all Feb babies been born? ❤️

how is everyone else doing, Anyone doing anything nice for Mother’s Day on Sunday? It’s my first, I’m really looking forward to it🥰🫠 it’ll just be low key, walk on the beach and dinner but I feel it’s so special

RaspberryTreehouse · 09/03/2024 13:14

I'm a bit late, but my baby girl was born on Monday afternoon. It was a stressful couple of days getting her here and ended up with an EMCS under general followed by a severe PPH, so it's taking us a while to come to terms with.
She's absolutely perfect, and worth the nine months of vomiting it took to get her here (I was still throwing up the morning of my scheduled induction, so glad that's gone now!).

It's lovely to hear everyone settling into newborn life, although I'm a bit nervous about everything to come now I've caught up on the thread! 😬

anony1111 · 09/03/2024 14:24

@RaspberryTreehouse congratulations on the arrival of your baby girl 💕 sorry to hear it was a stressful time and I hope you are recovering well.
Don't let the thread make you nervous, enjoy the baby bubble 🥰 although hard work it's absolutely amazing and everyone's journey is completely different

RachLeeds · 09/03/2024 14:30

@DmcinT that sounds lovely! I am looking forward to my first Mother’s Day too. We’re going out for a family meal. My little boy will be exactly 4 weeks tomorrow, so I’m also celebrating that I’ve survived a month with a newborn! 🥰🤣

@RaspberryTreehouse many congratulations! Wishing you a speedy recovery. The first 2 weeks were just a blur for me tbh but you soon get into a routine. My only regret is wishing I had taken more photos of baby, or booked a newborn photo shoot because he’s changed so much already… 🥲 Don’t put any pressure on yourself and just say no to visitors if you don’t feel up to it! I felt a lot more confident in my third week, it does get easier x

redxlondon · 09/03/2024 18:46

We’re having our first night out tonight for a meal locally while mum and dad look after the little one. I was so excited, slightly anxious now heading out but felt so good to put on makeup and get dressed up. I read A LOT of threads seeing what was “acceptable” and when other people first left baby for a few hours to go out. The answer … we each need to do what’s right for us. Have a lovely Mother’s Day tomorrow. Feels very special as the first one.

DmcinT · 09/03/2024 19:00

@RaspberryTreehouse huge congrats on the arrival of ur little girl🎀🥰 I’m sorry it wasn’t what u had planned❤️ how are u recovering after CS?

@RachLeeds ah lovely to have double celebration for tomorrow. My LO will be 4 weeks on Tuesday, I can’t get over how much she’s changed, myself and DH were looking back on pics of the night she was born and few days after and it really hits u how fast they grow. Great advice on all the pics, I’d say deff take lots of short wee videos too🥰 we got a newborn shoot when she was 2 weeks so we are just waiting on getting those back 🤞🏽 there’s even 1 nice one of the 3 of us as you’d swear our LO had never been fed before and tried feeding on me the whole shoot 😅😂 even after getting lots of wee feeds throughout it to try pacify her😬

@redxlondon good for you going out, hope you enjoy your evening! You're absolutely right that it's about what feels right for you.
We went out for dinner on my birthday when my daughter was 6 weeks old, leaving her with my mum for just shy of 3 hours between pumps (I exclusively pumped for her).
It feels a bit harder to leave both kids, it's a lot to ask of my mum, might need to get my sister involved too. It's not really on our radar yet - also my son is sooo much more clingy and constantly breastfeeding.
I did have my first post partum glass of wine out for lunch today! Small wins haha

Happy (first for some of us) mother's day everyone💗

A quick question for those who are formula feeding, baby is finishing her 4oz bottle 90% of the time now. Should I move to 5oz? The guide says not until 2 months (she's 4 weeks) but I remember my health visitor saying to ignore the guide!

anony1111 · 10/03/2024 08:41

Happy Mothers Day 💐

@Meeting if she is draining the bottle I would start giving her 5oz and see how she goes

Sunshineclouds11 · 10/03/2024 09:07

@Meeting offer the extra oz.

Sunshineclouds11 · 10/03/2024 09:08

Happy Mother's Day everyone 💗💙

My little girl gifted me no sleep 😅

Happy Mother's Day!

@redxlondon hope you had a great time! That sounds idyllic and you have someone trusted to look after the baby, so that sounds perfect.

Happy Mothers Day, ladies 🩷🩵

Cheetocat · 10/03/2024 16:43

anony1111 · 10/03/2024 21:21

Has anyone else's baby had sticky eyes? We are 11 days old now and Leo's eyes keep getting gunky 😔 I have been keeping clean with cooled boiled water and hoping it will pass quickly! I read it's something to do with the tear ducts?
Any advice would be appreciated 💕

undercoverhero74 · 10/03/2024 21:31

@anony1111 my little girl has a sticky eye too! I have been cleaning it with boiled water and cotton pads but it hasn't had much effect.
With my first born I was advised to wipe them with a bit of breast milk and it worked wonders. I have started doing that with baby girl and it really does help.
The midwife advised me that their tear ducts are very narrow but as they grow they widen and the problem will resolve itself. It really isn't anything to worry about unless the whites of their eyes go red and it starts to look sore. My wee girl wakes up most mornings with her eye glued shut but it doesn't seem to bother her which is a relief

anony1111 · 10/03/2024 21:41

@undercoverhero74 thank you! I think my milk has dried up but I do have some colostrum in the freezer, would that be ok to use do you think? His eyes look fine just the horrible stickiness 😔 he's not bothered either but I feel awful for him

Hankthehonk · 10/03/2024 21:46

My boy also has a gunky eye, it persisted for 10 days despite cleaning regularly with cooled boiled water and also breast milk. Health visitor advised pharmacist, went in on Friday and he suggested cleaning with Johnsons baby shampoo in the cooled boiled water. I was a bit taken aback but after two days of this it's definitely helping!
