I noticed the other thread was full and have started a new one.

Lovely to hear of everyone’s 20 week scans. Thanks to those of you who gave me a list of baby essentials, very helpful!

Hope you’re all doing well!

I didn't even think about an air conditioning unit! Might look into that sooner rather than later, as suspect they will be hard to get come summer!

Busyhedgehog · 01/03/2024 16:14

I'd probably go with a short body or just a nappy, depeding on how hot it gets. We can get close to 40 degrees around here. However, our bedrooms are all in the basement, which is like a natural air conditioning system and it doesn't get too warm down there.

I keep worrying about the temperature too- its so inconsistent in the UK it's really hard to buy for! I'm also worried about giving birth in a really hot maternity ward I'm going to invest in a little fan and tell my partner he needs to keep providing cold flannels!

Jess725 · 01/03/2024 17:32

Hey, happy friday!
im so with you all re temperature and what to buy ready for 0-3 months.
I think I’m going to go with lots of short sleeve body and a decent amount of sleepsuits and not much else. Oh, I have a 1 tog sleeping bag/ swaddle thing for when temperature is under 26 😊I’m being told they won’t need too much more. Perhaps a blanket/muslins could be a good buy for covering and keeping warm?!?
I have a bang on average baby currently so I think I’ll have to get some first size now too, eeeeek.

I’m a first time Mamma so feel free to correct me if I have gone total left field 😆😊

Amberellaella · 01/03/2024 18:23

Short sleeved bodysuits are the best hot weather option. That and camping out in the coldest room during a heatwave. I also have a room thermometer that I can access on my phone - v handy for a half asleep temperature check of DDs room.

Amberellaella · 01/03/2024 18:41

@Surprisedbuthappy it’s not been a problem at all. Being a first time mum is a great leveller! My best mum friend is ten years younger than me for example. Maybe I moan more about being tired and she moans more about being skint, but we both mostly moan about our husbands 😂

Most of my mum friends irl are from my NCT group, though I do also have a few from work. So I’d recommend NCT for the social part even if you’re not that bothered about the info.

Oatmilktea · 01/03/2024 18:57

@Amberellaella I have been thinking about doing the NCT classes for the social aspect as I am moving to a new area (only 30 mins away from where I live at present but far enough away from my friends!). I see that they do a Blue Light discount for 15% off, FYI if anyone has one!

Morningcoffeeaddict · 01/03/2024 19:34

On NCT if you’re not bothered about the info so much some areas do a postnatal course which is cheaper. I did this with DS and it was great, his bestie is someone we met there (and whose mum I get on well with) but we all stayed in touch for ages as a group despite the sessions being virtual (covid) and met up regularly once we were allowed. Also meant as babies were here and similar ages we were all up at night and navigating teething and sleep regressions etc as a group.

Morningcoffeeaddict · 01/03/2024 19:36

@glasshalffull0 - agree with you about hot maternity wards. Hospitals are always so warm! After DS was born there was a heatwave (we were in hospital for ages) and because of covid they wouldn’t allow any fans or air con. Midwives kept passing out with heat exhaustion and having to go home - utter chaos!

Surprisedbuthappy · 01/03/2024 20:30

@Amberellaella Thanks - that's reassuring! I'm not in the UK so no NCT classes but I'm sure there'll be something similar. I intend to join some group or other as I hardly know anyone in the area and I don't want to end up isolated.

@Morningcoffeeaddict That sounds horrendous! I'm a bit worried about the heat of summer too, but keep telling myself that lots of babies are born in the summer and it'll be fine!

Morningcoffeeaddict · 02/03/2024 13:59

@Surprisedbuthappy yes absolutely- DS was absolutely fine through it all, though there were definitely times I just had him in a nappy as it was roasting. Generally I find he’s more worried about being cold than bothered about the heat- he’s 3.5 now and still really complains about the cold.

ceruleansky · 03/03/2024 04:43

Got to see baby yesterday (18+4) and it was upside down with legs crossed. During my NT scan (week 14), baby was upside down with legs stretched out.
Does anyone know if this is okay? My doctor didn't seem concerned, she said the growth is all good, but I did see online that it starts to turn upside down only after 20 weeks.

Bali200 · 03/03/2024 06:57

@ceruleansky aww how lovely you got to see baby yesterday and such a relief that everything looks positive! I wouldn’t worry too much about their position, at my 12 week scan mine was upside down the whole time, and I also thought it was really strange and looked very different to everyone else’s 12 week scan photo as a result, I had to rotate the pic 😂 but the sonographer said it’s very normal for them to be upside down!

ceruleansky · 03/03/2024 09:02

@Bali200
Thanks for replying! Hope you're doing well. I'm happy to hear that it's normal, that's a relief. :) 💗
I've seen the baby since it was a tiny dot and he/ she is already so big now. Very active and kicking!

BananaHammock23 · 03/03/2024 11:37

Has anyone else been getting period type cramping? It's started the past few days after a really high stress week and now I feel anxious. Still feeling movements. We've got a repeat of our 20 week scan on Tuesday (they couldn't take some measurements) so wondering whether to wait until then or call the maternity unit for a check today

CB2805 · 03/03/2024 12:50

@BananaHammock23 i experienced them quite often starting 18w and was so concerned as well. I spoke with my fertility dr and he advised to start extra magnesium supplements which I’m not gonna lie works wonders. Not only the cramps stopped but I can get a decent night sleep now as well!

CB2805 · 03/03/2024 12:52

Ladies how are your movements? I’m 20w on the dot and I’ve been feeling bubbas for the past couple of weeks regularly. But some days I can feel them literally all day and then 2 days are more quite with just some random kicks. Should I get worried?

AimeeLou84 · 03/03/2024 12:59

@CB2805 Is this your first baby? I’m 21 weeks Wednesday and not felt anything yet but had my anomaly scan this week. My sonographer said it’s normal not to feel anything until 25 weeks with first baby. I’m desperate to feel her!

Edited

I rang the other day as I was concerned as used to feel whooshing all the time and then for a few days haven't. The midwife said anything before 24 weeks is a bonus and can be all over the place. Anything past 24 weeks should be regular and routine. Hope that puts your mind at rest.

CB2805 · 03/03/2024 13:12

@AimeeLou84 yes it’s my first pregnancy. And tbh with you I was well prepared to not feel anything that early. But since it started it’s just another worry🙈 I believe I just started feeling movement earlier as there is less room I guess for the twins?
im sure you will start feeling movement as well soon and then you will start worry about that😅

CB2805 · 03/03/2024 13:14

@Sophie3003 oh that’s good to know. I mean I knew that we are not suppose to look for patterns yet but I can’t help it! I started gently poking my belly today to get them move🤣

Ahhh twins maybe that’s why as they are taking up all the space. I’m constantly panicking about every single thing, then it’ll be something else to worry about when the baby is here 🫣

CB2805 · 03/03/2024 13:40

@AimeeLou84 i know right? I always thought that after my 12w scan I will finally relax but heck no I was so mistaken😅

Morningcoffeeaddict · 03/03/2024 14:53

Had my private scan yesterday to make us feel better about NHS cancelling on me this week. Officially confirmed babe is another boy - friends are joking about how outnumbered I’ll be as all our pets are male too - looking forward to embracing the chaos though!

Mentioned to the sonographer that I’ve not really been feeling movements still at 19weeks so she checked and I have an anterior placenta that still covers most of my abdomen except a little window at the bottom where I do sometimes feel movement - glad to have an explanation for it. Baby boy was kicking up a storm during the scan and I felt nothing at all so glad to have it confirmed he’s doing ok! She said I’ll feel more when he’s a bit bigger and the placenta has moved a bit further up out of the way.
