@LeeanneD11 i have read online that Aptamil is basically cow and gate as they are made in the same factory by the same company. I’m thinking of moving over to either Hipp Organic or Kendamil as I’ve read that both are slightly gentler on the tummy. My little girl isn’t throwing up after every feed it’s maybe twice a day and she doesn’t cry in pain, just grunts and wriggles which I think is due to the wind as she gets so windy even when bringing lots back up. I’m willing to try everything to try and find a way of making her more comfortable but I want to start with the methods that are most likely to fix the actual cause and then work down so the SMA Althera milk is bottom of my list at the moment, it’s her rash making the GP think it’s an allergy but it could just be simple eczema. We shall see, if she starts in pain at any point then I’ll switch right away

Oh really I didn't know that about the milk , my little one was throwing up after every feed , very unsettled was sick even after winding and pooing straight away after every feed I will change him before his feed and then he will poo again , so we are now on a trail for 2 weeks to see how he gets on with it hopefully you see some improvement soon when your little one it's hard seeing them in pain and upset , we tried everything possible to settle him but it wasn't helping us at all xx

WriMum22 · 07/12/2023 10:39

@LeeanneD11 see my little girl isn’t as bad as that which is why I’m just not sure it’s CMPA. She feeds perfectly fine, but after a feed she’s really noisy and wriggly, grunting all the time like she’s got trapped wind. Then that’ll just continue for hours after, but she doesn’t murmur with it as in she doesn’t cry at all or appear to be in any kind of pain, it just looks uncomfortable that’s all. It gets worse if we put her down on her back so she tends to settle much better held up on our shoulders. She’s covered in a rash though but the Aveeno Baby moisturiser is really keeping that at bay and has almost cleared it. She throws up every single day, maybe twice a day, like projectile vomit, it flies out everywhere and soaks multiple muslins plus me and her. It’s always after a feed and she gips whilst bringing pretty much the entire bottle up, but it’s not every feed. She has about 8 feeds a day and only vomits after about 2 of these feeds. It’s so difficult because in some ways she fits the diagnosis but in others she doesn’t. I will see how the gaviscon alone works over the weekend and then will maybe switch milk to Hipp or Kendamil and then if that all fails I’ll try the SMA, unless she gets worse and then I’ll go straight for the SMA. It’s just the doctor saying she may lose weight on the prescribed milk so make sure you get her weighed weekly, and I’m like but she’s gaining weight lovely so now you’ve scared me as I’ll never forgive myself if we try the SMA and she loses weight and it wasn’t even an allergy after all.

My doctor said to try this milk first and if this doesn't work the next step will be medication, he doesn't have the rash tho but gets a red lip after the bottle . So hopefully we will both see how we get on at the weekend with our little ones xx

Feeling a little deflated today. Seeing all new babies posted on our hospital page and they are all bigger then my lo, she’s 7lb at 5 weeks old, will be 6 weeks on Monday. Are there any smaller babies here? Or any of your older ones small - when did they catch up, if ever!
Shes feeding well and isn’t a sicky baby. She’s very alert. Just doesn’t put on weight very quickly!
She is getting in the festive spirit though and is going to be the star in her playgroup nativity 🤣

My first has been small all the way through and she's now 14. Some kids are just smaller but perfectly healthy. She looks adorable in her little outfit.

FlyingHighFlyingLow · 08/12/2023 04:55

We have a healthy baby boy 😍🥰

Went into labour naturally at 4am yesterday morning, was in triage getting assessed when labour ward rang me to say I could come in for induction! Never ended up needing induction. It did however all go very pear shaped, ending in a category 1 c section this afternoon but I'm so so so grateful to all the medical staff that kept us safe. Now enjoying all the cuddles with our prefect mischievous little boy 🥰

Crazybrowncow · 08/12/2023 06:05

Yay! Congratulations @FlyingHighFlyingLow such happy news!

LeeanneD11 · 08/12/2023 07:36

Congratulations @FlyingHighFlyingLow 💙💙

Travellingislife · 08/12/2023 08:00

@FlyingHighFlyingLow congratulations! I’m glad it went well in the end!

Thank you everyone for the advice about cleaning the Haakaa!

My little girl slept from 20:30 to 2am last night when I woke her up as I got worried 😅 I need to try and relax and take the rest when I can..

PinkPlantCase · 08/12/2023 08:59

Congratulations @FlyingHighFlyingLow ! Hope your recovery is smooth xx

JoyApple · 08/12/2023 18:45

Congratulations @FlyingHighFlyingLow :)

@GreenAventurinee we've got a small one too, and honestly don't worry, it'll work to their advantage as they get older. My eldest is now approaching teens and despite having a crap diet, doesn't put on weight easily. I wouldn't worry at all, as long as baby is happy and not falling down many centiles.

Thack · 09/12/2023 20:53

Lovely news @FlyingHighFlyingLow how are you doing?

@GreenAventurinee we were 7lb3 at 5 weeks. Some babies are small! If she is following the line then she's textbook, but as long as she is growing then she's doing as she should 🙂
Don't worry about catching up, these babies are so very young! We are still in the Fourth trimester and it's very true that babies do things at their own pace.
7 weeks now, babyThack is starting to get some chubbiness. Next weigh in is next week, I can't wait to see the numbers.

Has anyone had their 6-8 week GP appointment yet? Ours is after Xmas. From what I remember it's rather dull.

Nov2023 · 10/12/2023 08:05

Does anyone else have extra checks for babie's weight? My little one feeds well , latches nicely, has lots of wet nappies etc but isn't gaining as quickly as they would like. I am following the feeding plan easily but it is still hard to have him checked every couple of days and not see enough progress! An average breastfeed is 20-25 minutes does that sound right to you guys?

FlyingHighFlyingLow · 11/12/2023 06:41

Home and doing well thank you 🥰

Day 3 check shows 6% body weight loss, my milk came in today so hopefully that will help! He doesn't like to feed for very long, average 10 mins, but he feeds a lot and has already had 3 wet and dirty nappies tonight.

BabyBabyBaby123 · 11/12/2023 07:55

@Nov2023 how old is baby? Have they been checked for tongue tie?
We are on the waiting list for a tongue tie referral and DS was gaining slowly, with one week only gaining 1oz.
He is almost 6 weeks old and seems to have turned a corner with her weight gain and I’m hoping this means his tongue tie has stretched and won’t need treating - if we ever get an appointment!
I bought cheap baby scales from Amazon when DD was struggling with her weight due to jaundice and have been weighing him on a Sunday, but now he seems to be gaining better I am going to stop as it’s easy to obsess about.

@FlyingHighFlyingLow sounds like you’re doing great!

Has anyone’s baby started to get a flaky scalp? I remember DD having a bit of cradle cap on her eyebrows, but DS’s is much lighter and more white than yellow, so I’m not sure whether to try a bit of baby oil on his head or just keep gently brushing it out with a baby brush? Any suggestions are welcome!

Nov2023 · 11/12/2023 08:25

@BabyBabyBaby123
My baby is almost 2 weeks old. He had a slow start with both of us having issues with birth and infections afterwards and a longer hospital stay.. He lost just over 12% but no tongue tie and a touch of jaundice. He is gaining but slowly. I think he is showing signs of reflux-very windy and sicks up so that won't be helping his weight! he feeds well and often and has wet nappies etc so I hope it is a question of patience. The scales are a good idea but this is making me anxious as it is so I might avoid buying them and weighing him daily! I am already finding the appointments make me anxious. Silly but I feel like we are on trial!

I hope your son gets a tongue tie appointment soon.. it is such a shame it is not a priority appointment. I can't imagine it takes that long to sort? Even better if it resolves itself naturally 🤞

BabyBabyBaby123 · 11/12/2023 09:12

@Nov2023 I know exactly how you feel, DD2 lost 13.5% of her birth weight due to jaundice, but once that passed she just gained and gained and is currently 23 months and on 97th centile. I call her my little meatball! Keep doing what you’re doing, the wet and dirty nappies are a great sign.

I’m just glad that other than the slow weight gain at the start we have no symptoms of tongue tie, I was told it was mild in the hospital, we would have definitely had to have it looked at privately otherwise if he was still struggling to gain weight, or I was having pain feeding. I’m convinced some of the private places are snip happy, everyone I know who has been to our local one has needed a tie snipping and I’m not convinced ties are so common.

DS is just going into 1 month baby clothes - 0-3 are still swimming on him, so at least he had good wear out of his newborn size outfits!

DollyGx · 11/12/2023 12:39

Hope everyone is doing ok! I’m still very sore ‘down there’ so have an appointment this afternoon to get my stitches looked at, I’m 4 weeks post birth now so would have thought the pain would have subsided but I’m still not walking properly or for any long periods of time without pain so something definitely isn’t right!
Also have baby girl at the osteopath tomorrow, she’s so unsettled and is staying awake for very long periods of time so I’m hoping (maybe grasping at straws) that they might be able to either pick up on something or release any tensions left over from birth. Has anyone ever tried osteopathy for their little one? The guy I’m going to see is very highly recommended for babies and at this point I’m willing to try anything for a bit of sleep 😅

foodislife1 · 11/12/2023 15:33

@DollyGx I've not seen one yet it have heard good things.
We are currently battling with severe baby acne. GP advised dairy free diet incase its CMPA but I hope it clears up soon. Anyone else had this problem? Baby's cheeks are so red and look so sore :(

WriMum22 · 11/12/2023 17:00

@foodislife1 weve had this and GP advised they thought it was CMPA. I started using Aveeno Baby cream on it and it literally cleared it up overnight. I’ve been using it twice a day for over a week and her skin has been crystal clear ever since. Worth a try, it’s a very gentle cream designed specifically for eczema

foodislife1 · 11/12/2023 17:26

@WriMum22 I'm so pleased it's worked!
Thank you for the tip..will try (and keep my fingers crossed!)

Katiec1 · 11/12/2023 17:40

Hope all the ladies and babies are keeping well.

I can finally say I’m home after a 5 day stay in remissions in my maternity hospital, quite possibly the worst 5 days being away from all my family.
Turns out I had picked up a staphylococcus infection in the wound itself (the only place I think I could have contracted that is the hospital before I was discharged)
And Group Strep B was picked up on a vag swab 😩 I’ve been on a course of 3 different antibiotics and finally coming through the other side. Another 7 days to complete and hoping I’ll be done 🤞🏼
Also feeling very thankful now that little lady was born via section after all.
I’ve been told by a few nurses that I’m very lucky that came in when I did and didn’t leave it or wait another day or 2 as it could have been a lot more serious.

If I can give any sort of advice from my experience is that if you feel anything different down below, whether it’s pain, lumps/bumps, heat, redness…get it checked and don’t leave it.

Nov2023 · 11/12/2023 18:19

@Katiec1 That sounds very tough but glad you are feeling better now. It is such a horrible feeling having to go back to hospital when all you want is to be home but seems that you are lucky to have trusted your gut and had it checked. Thanks for sharing to keep the rest of us alert to what can happen. Rest up and enjoy being home

foodislife1 · 11/12/2023 18:58

@Katiec1 poor you - that sounds tough!
Glad you're on the mend and at home now

DollyGx · 11/12/2023 20:34

@Katiec1 yikes that sounds tough, but glad you are out the other side now! Take care of yourself.
Totally agree re. not leaving things unchecked - I went to the GP today as I was concerned I wasn’t healing properly after my episiotomy as I still felt sore after 4 weeks. After an internal exam the GP suspected my internal wound was infected and I’m now on antibiotics. Really hope this does the trick, I just want to feel normal again and enjoy this time with baby.
