For those discussing iron. My midwife asked me if i wanted to be part of a trial where i take iron tablets daily along with my pregnancy vitamins.

She said there is evidence that it reduces the need for blood transfusions/iron post birth if blood loss. Prevention better than cure type thing.

Maybe this is a new thing....

Thanks @CluelessInLondon I know it isn’t an exact science going by LMP, I got my LH peak on cd16 so it could throw dates off by a little but not enough to put my mind at ease. Seeing a heartbeat on a scan is a really positive sign though.

For what it’s worth, my two always measured small on their 12+ scans but they were 7 and 8lbs. It’s just these early weeks can be worrying.

Bugdem123 · 06/09/2023 12:49

@Doodlestar I would go for option 2 if you can make it work. I went for a place that didn't have an internal scanner on Saturday and wish I had as she couldn't get a good view and I've been measured 6 days earlier than I thought I would be and it's definitely caused me a bit more stress than was needed.

Bugdem123 · 06/09/2023 12:51

@xxcxdonxx I had an early scan on Saturday. Was expecting to be 7+3 going by my LMP and was measured at 6+4 although she did struggle to get a good view and it wasnt an internal scan. She didn't seem concerned about this at all but it's freaked me right out so I've booked another scan at another place in two weeks and I'm hoping it'll actually be reassuring!

xxcxdonxx · 06/09/2023 13:09

@Bugdem123 yes I’m also feeling it was a not so reassuring scan! I know these early scans are based on mm so it can be tricky to be accurate. I think in two weeks you will have seen lots of growth to get a much clearer image, fingers crossed for you.

Part of me wishes I didn’t go and just see where I was in the next few weeks. My midwife was really to the point of it’s not bad news but I can’t be certain at this point. I guess I’ll know for sure next week.

I’m out with my friends at the weekend and I would have liked to have known either way for that. They know I’ve had miscarriage before and have been trying and I absolutely will tell them if I miscarry again but I just don’t want to share anything just yet.
I think I’ll tell them I’m just trying to be as ‘clean living’ as I can just now and hope they don’t pry too much.

Is anyone else finding purple bruises on themselves I keep finding random ones in places I definitely haven’t hit like the inner thigh!
They’re quite lumpy like a really bad bruise 😩

That doesn't sound very normal, how many bruises have you got? Have you had your booking in bloods yet? I'd give your doctor a call if you've got several of them and in places you wouldn't expect to bruise. They might need to check that you've not got any issues with blood clotting. Hope all's okay x

sugarplum33 · 06/09/2023 14:53

@Emma1822 I agree with @hopefulmum46, it doesn't sound like any typical pregnancy symptom so would be worth getting advice from your GP.

@Rainbow890 That's interesting, I wonder if that's what it is.

@xxcxdonxx Sorry it wasn't as reassuring as you hoped and fingers crossed your next scan brings positive news.

@Doodlestar I echo what others have said about the importance of an internal scan in the early weeks. I had a scan at 8 weeks and they tried abdominally but had to change to vaginal when they couldn't see enough.

sugarplum33 · 06/09/2023 14:55

I'm at my booking in appointment and the midwife has accidentally double booked the slot 😩 it's so hot and I feel so sick, I just want to get in and out and done. Thankfully I bought the tablet for my daughter as I don't have the energy today to entertain her for over 30 minutes in a bare waiting room.

Doodlestar · 06/09/2023 15:15

Thanks @CluelessInLondon ,@Bugdem123 , @sugarplum33 ! Did a bit more searching and found a place with better appointment times and an internal scanner. Costs a tenner more but worth it hopefully. Booked in for a week tomorrow.

@sugarplum33 hope the wait passes quickly. Let us know how the appointment goes!

ASGIRC · 06/09/2023 15:48

@Doodlestar @sugarplum33 I had a scan at 8+6 and the doc did it externally (it was a bonus scan, to be fair), and it was not great... We could see the baby, and the heartbeat, but it was blurry, and she had to apply so much pressure to get an image it was actually quite uncomfortable.
And I didnt even get a picture, because the quality was so bad!
So for early scans, definitely recommend internal, as uncomfortable as they might be, as they are much clearer!

chelau · 06/09/2023 19:23

Has anyone had experiences of having a private scan before 7 weeks? I’ve read stories about it making people more worried when they haven’t been able to see a heartbeat because it’s too early etc.

WolfMother326 · 06/09/2023 19:59

@chelau I had one at 6+4 a week ago and I had a positive experience. Saw the heartbeat. It was an internal scan.

Ttcmumma · 06/09/2023 20:12

@chelau I had one at epu at 6+2, measured 6 weeks with a heartbeat. Could see on abdominal and transvaginal x

Pinkstuffs · 06/09/2023 20:50

@chelau I had one at 6+3, it was internal and saw a heartbeat. I was measuring 5+6 but I ovulated late in CD17 so was about right.

Pinkstuffs · 06/09/2023 20:51

@chelau i rationalised with myself that if they couldn’t find a heartbeat it would possibly be because it was too early not because something was wrong. I had some bleeding and the scan was worth it for reassurance.

chelau · 06/09/2023 21:06

Thank you everyone :) I felt like I was crazy for wanting the reassurance of having a scan so early, even though I knew I wouldn’t be seeing too much.

Babyrabbit1 · 06/09/2023 21:41

Heyy can someone advise me on what to expect at my first appointment? I spoke to the midwife and she booked my first appointment for when i am 10+5 (too far i know☹) anyways is it just a regular check up appointment or will they throw in a cheeky little scan too. Im from the uk and the midwife was so abrupt i was too scared to ask what will be involved. I havent seen anyone as of yet, no gp or anything so no checks have been done but have a private scan booked this friday when i will be 7+3 - appreciate the help❤

sugarplum33 · 06/09/2023 21:50

@Babyrabbit1 I just had my booking in appointment today. Nothing too exciting, just lots of questions about my health and she checked my height and weight, blood pressure, urine and took some bloods. One or two ladies on here are having their booking in appointment at the same time as their scan but this isn't typical. If you're only going to be 10+5 and nobody has specifically told you about attending this appointment at the hospital or about preparing to be scanned then I'd be 99% sure it will just be a routine community midwife appointment without a scan.

@sugarplum33 Thankyou so much and yes its at a childrens centre not the hospital. How was your appointment today and have you been for any private scans? Xx

Bluesky85 · 07/09/2023 00:27

@Babyrabbit1 i had my booking in appointment this week at 10 weeks. As Sugarplum says just loads of questions about your health, any family health issues, your mental health etc plus the blood/ measurements etc. they also said that they would book me in for a scan at 12 weeks and I’d get a letter about that in the post. I haven’t had any private scans- just waiting for the 12 week one x

sugarplum33 · 07/09/2023 07:25

@Babyrabbit1 The appointment went really well, the midwife was really nice. I had to take my 3yo daughter along who doesn't know yet that I'm pregnant so the midwife even tried her best to conduct the whole appointment without directly mentioning 'pregnancy' which was quite funny as unsurprisingly that comes up quite a lot 🤣 she asked me if I wanted to try for a VBAC and that was a definite no which she just ticked on the system and said that's fine and I'd be consultant led. She also sorted me a letter to get free prescriptions and dental treatment which will hopefully be posted out before my trip to the dentists this month. Went home with my folder of notes feeling like it's a bit more real! I've got my first private scan on Saturday when I should be 8+0 by my dates. Although the nhs due date calculator online takes into account the length of your menstrual cycle when giving you your dates, this isn't the case in your actual notes. She asked me about my cycles but my dates are still based on a 28 day cycle so I'm officially 8+5 and due April 13th (7+5 due April 20th by my calculations)

Bluesky85 · 07/09/2023 08:34

is anyone else dealing with a really unsettled stomach? I’ve had this the whole time- bloating, gas, some stomach cramps and needing to empty my bowels around 3 times a day and once during the night. Before I was pregnant I would just go once at the same time every day. Also it’s always diarrhoea/ loose. Not sure if this is normal, or because of my crap diet currently! But whatever it is it’s really annoying, especially having to get up in the night to go!

xxcxdonxx · 07/09/2023 09:24

@Bluesky85 sorry that sounds really uncomfortable, especially having to get up during the night. I am on the opposite end of the scale!!

@sugarplum33 omg how exciting its official now! Im so nervous about my scan tomorrow because ive had no symptoms apart from a dodgy stomach and tiredness. It wont feel real until i see the fetus❤

Bexxy28 · 07/09/2023 09:57

@Babyrabbit1 how exciting!! I still haven't booked in with a midwife I really need to do this just something that worries me about jinxing everything hate how im like this!! X
