I've only bought a Teddy bear and a babygrow @EL27 After our dating scan, my view was that if anything happens to baby it be nice to have at least those for a memory box as I have aimialr for my losses.

I don't imagine I'll be buying anything else now until beyond 34 weeks. But in fairness I have most of the stuff from DS3. And things like new mattresses etc, I can buy easily enough after 34 weeks and if baby comes before 34 weeks, they'll be in NICU for a little while so can get prepared for baby hopefully coming home during that time.

Still so so nervous we will lose this baby. I won't feel at ease until baby is home.

sashastuck · 23/08/2023 10:20

So lovely to hear about everyone’s scans going well! ❤️ Enjoy yours today @EL27 hope it goes well! Mine is tomorrow, so excited but nervous. Baby has been kicking like mad since 5am.

@Kalodin totally understandable, can’t imagine the worry. But if all is looking well so far then I just pray for a wonderful outcome for you! X

Speaking of maternity tights (saw someone mention on last page), has anyone got any recommendations? Or just to size up in normal tights?

Mummyme87 · 23/08/2023 10:24

I’ve been buying bits, got a few baby grows. Got maternity pads as like I said were reduced and my favourite of there were to be a favourite maternity pad 😂😂 if I delivered anytime from now or waters broke would need them anyway 🤷🏼‍♀️

wheb you buy clothes, check the weights for the sizes. Some newborn only goes up to 7lb, I get the up to 10lb and my 10 and 10lb5 babes both fit in to those for a good few weeks. Mainly get ‘up to 1month’ and start 0-3m but they are usually massive as up to 14lb.

is anyone planning on going to the baby show in October? It’s at Olympia in London 21st oct, fri-sun, obvs for people not too far away. I love a baby show just need to decide which day we can go

buckingmad · 23/08/2023 10:47

@Mummyme87 ooh I might see if my Mum wants to go and tie it in with a visit to her. I didn't do anything like that with my first as it was covid.

MrsJ6921 · 23/08/2023 11:26

I’ve also been buying baby bits from clothes to changing baskets to wipes etc and my husband has panelled the nursery. It’s the first grandchild for my parents and the first granddaughter for my in laws so naturally everyone is excited and have bought us/contributed to both clothes and the big things. I don’t think there’s a right or wrong answer it’s just whatever you want to do.

It’s my first baby so I’ll never get this experience again so I’m quite happy to shop. And being due the beginning on January I don’t fancy rushing around last minute over Christmas.

I do think you can’t go wrong with Next, we’ve bought quite a few sleepsuits and vests from there and their sizes seem the best and they’re a similar price but softer than supermarkets.

buckingmad · 23/08/2023 11:35

I'm a huge fan of next for baby clothes. Their sleepsuits and vests wash so well and are so soft. I don't buy them from anywhere else. I hated the one pack I got from mothercare, felt horrible and got holes immediately.

Sainsburys are also good. Jojo are gorgeous and I think great quality for the price, I buy a lot in their sales. I got a lovely smocked dress for my daughter's 2nd birthday with matching nappy cover and it was about £5 more than the Next equivalent which didn't come with nappy cover and was no where near as nice.

Bims2019 · 23/08/2023 12:04

Great to see all the clothing recommendations, we haven't bought anything yet except one baby grow! A friend has given us a load of newborn and 0-3 things so hopefully we won't need to get too much, but I would like to buy some of our own things too.

We also really need to book an appointment to look at prams, does anyone else already feel like they're running out of weekends to get things done? 😂

Good luck for your scan today @EL27! @Hummusanddipdip got to love the baby brain, hope your consultant appointment goes well. I have my first one next week, need a loyalty card for hospital visits atm.

Thanks @Mummyme87 @lilluce95 @Onedayatatime24 @Salamander91, it would be great to have another scan but I don't think my trust do them. Might have to resort to a private scan in a few weeks time, but feeling movements now does help 😊

Matildahoney · 23/08/2023 12:42

Just back from my scan, all was good, which was nice after the worries we've had so far!!
I've bought a couple of baby grows, from Sainsbury's and M&S & some in Primark the other day, but was trying to get through the scan first. We were in Next a few weeks ago browsing, their stuff did look lovely! But like DP says, they do next day delivery so we can get stuff once baby is here & we know what size it is, he also wants to wait until we get closer so if it's the wrong size we can take it back! My niece is due in Oct with a 💛 so she will pass her unisex stuff on to us too.
We have our pram & my aunt has bought us a bouncer. The prices of baths are insane so we're looking to go nearly new with that, we're off to a Little Pickles market this weekend, so we'll see what's there.
DPs mum will be knitting, and sewing & she does patchwork til her hearts content, DPs dad makes toys out of woodwork so he made a family friend a rattle & teething ring, he's chomping at the bit to make things!

MrsJ6921 · 23/08/2023 14:40

I had my whopping cough jab this morning and it was fine. I have a sore arm but that’s to be expected 😊

Luhou · 23/08/2023 15:53

EL27 · 23/08/2023 08:42

Hey all got my scan today 20+5 today! Afterwards (all being well) we will be going in to town to look at baby things! I haven't bought anything yet and am feeling a bit overwhelmed when researching all the stuff we need. (First baby 😅)

Anyone else not bought anything yet? I will be popping in to Mamas and Papas and John Lewis to look and feel of the prams - not planning on buying one today though. I am hoping to be picking up some baby clothes, just don't know what sizes/styles to get? Any advice appreciated 😁

Exciting!

I'd avoid overhead babygrows either ones with poppers or zips.

Ones with built in scratch mits ideally. Difficult to judge if you'll need newborn size or not. My DD was 6lb 7.5oz and was in newborn size for the first 6-8 weeks. Then 0-3. I'd be aware that most people gift clothes in 0-3 so we found we ended up with so many!

Babygrows
Vests
Cardigans
Pramsuit
Outdoor hat!

I bought my daughter dresses but tbh this time round I'll be sticking with babygrows as long as possible.

Lightningrain · 23/08/2023 19:06

I was also wondering whether to get much in newborn size but I suppose you just don’t know until they’re born. I think I’ll end up ordering online or sending DP/DM to pick up whatever extras we need once baby is here.

I’ve bought a few sleepsuits and vests in 0-1 month size from Next and Mamas & Papas and a few cheaper supermarket bits so far.

Also got some blankets and a 2.5 tog sleep bag but I don’t think that’ll be suitable straight away unless it’s a big baby. Does anyone have any recommendations for what to put them in for sleeping in to begin with? I guess swaddle blankets?

I noticed there’s a sale on in Mamas & Papas so we’re thinking about going to have a look at nursery furniture and travel systems whilst that’s on. I feel like we can start to look at bigger things now that we’ve had the 20 week scan but it still doesn’t seem real as I haven’t felt any movements yet.

Luhou · 23/08/2023 19:14

@Lightningrain swaddled in a cellular blanket (ones with holes in)

Hummusanddipdip · 23/08/2023 20:05

Glad scans went well @Matildahoney hope yours went well @EL27 and shopping was fun. We still collected ds early and were going to go to the park, but he fell asleep in the car so we all came home and had a nap 🤣 helpful for me as I was up from 3 til 6 this morning. Bedtime however is fun, he's still up and playing with dh as he isn't tired 🤦‍♀️

Consultant apt went well thanks @Bims2019 she said they're tracking growth at 28, 32, 36 and 40 weeks, if baby is showing signs of being small, they will induce me at 37 weeks, which means that baby will be here between Christmas and New Year...

She explained why I'm on asprin in more depth and the risks of me continuing from 37 weeks if baby is small. I had a cry when I got home because I felt like it was my fault ds was sga, but then he's still tiny at 4, dh and I are short adults, we were both less than 6 and a half lbs at birth, so the odds are pretty high this one will be small too. But I got scared and upset.

No idea what to do with bedding ds slept in a nappy under a cellular blanket because he was born when the heatwave peaked in 2019, this time its a real winter baby, so total opposite needs.... Will I need growbags or would blankets be sufficient?

I have sorted through the bits I've been given back and what I'd kept from ds, I've got a full outfit (vest, full grow, trousers and jacket top thing) it's off white coloured with brown and beige animals printed on it, so fairly unisex.
Lots of teeshirt vests in newborn/small baby and all the larger wintery bits are 3 months as ds was still that small at 5/6 months.

Also a second fully recommending zip up and front popper grows, so helpful for poonarmies! The little envelope bits on overhead grows are useful, but you still risk poopy hands 🤣

EL27 · 23/08/2023 20:11

Thanks for all well wishes for the scan and baby clothes info!!

All went well, no issues everything normal. Only issue was trying to get baby in right position. made me get up 4 times and run around doing star jumps and all sorts to get baby to move to check the last thing 😂😂 Certainly the most exercise I've done in a while, baby did move in last 5 mins thankfully!

Unfortunately didn't get the best photos as i guess we had to rush the photo part. I am so glad we got early gender scan as I felt atmosphere there was a lot more chilled, photos were clearer and baby was very obviously showing his bits last time but still so grateful everything's good as I was so anxious this morning.

Had a nice afternoon then buying some baby clothes (I see how easy it is to get carried away when everything is so cute!!) Saw some lovely prams but still unsure what's best for us so will have to come back to that a later date.

It's all feeling much more real now 🥰

Mushroo · 23/08/2023 20:55

Just got back from my John Lewis appointment and it was SO helpful.

I’d really recommend as there was zero pressure to actually buy stuff - they just send you an email the next day with a link to your favourite stuff, but we spent well over an hour testing prams, playing with car seats and looking at cot options. The lady was very knowledgeable.

Lightningrain · 23/08/2023 21:08

Thanks @Luhou. I have some cellular blankets so can definitely do that to begin with.

@EL27 I had the same issues with trying to get baby to move at my scan. I ended up having to go back for a rescan and baby was in a good position the second time.

I agree it’s really tempting to buy every cute thing you see in the shops! I’m trying to hold off until the autumn/winter clothes are in.

Mummyme87 · 23/08/2023 22:17

I used sleeping bags from the start. Think they need to be over 8lb to use. Probably brand dependent. This time I may get a swaddle blanket to stop the bloody startle reflex that wakes them or one of those ones that their arms are by their head but inside a swaddle.

had bad sciatica this last few days, pelvis definitely starting to give up. This will make work very tough!!

xLJ1990x · 23/08/2023 22:59

@Mummyme87 what is the startle reflex? I hope your sciatica gets better soon!

Mummyme87 · 24/08/2023 06:18

@xLJ1990x when you lie then down and they almost shudder, arms up in the air and they bloody wake up again 😖

xLJ1990x · 24/08/2023 07:46

@Mummyme87 oh! I remember that happening to me when I was much younger 😂 hasn't happened in so long

Onedayatatime24 · 24/08/2023 07:46

So glad to hear scans are going well!! Ours is on Tuesday, starting to feel a little anxious about it!!

I've been looking at prams this week as we'll probably buy if everything okay at the scan..Spotted this on boots and seems a really good deal with the discount code. https://www.boots.com/ickle-bubba-stomp-luxe-all-in-one-travel-system-black-woodland-tan-pack-size-1-10324917-

But no idea if we'll need all that or if it looks any good. Can anyone help? What do you think?

PartRadish · 24/08/2023 08:51

Just about to go in for our anomaly scan and suddenly feeling very, very nervous 😬

lilluce95 · 24/08/2023 09:44

@EL27 I'm the same as you, this is my first too and I've not bought a thing as it can be quite overwhelming 😂 my sisters and friends have bought us a few bits though!

I have spent SO much time researching everything we'll need and I've made a checklist on my phone with everything we might need so I'm happy to share if that helps! 😊

@Kalodin I can't even imagine how that feels, but sending all the love and positive vibes your way that you'll have a wonderful outcome! Xx

EL27 · 24/08/2023 09:57

@Mushroo that's great to hear they are helpful. I'm definitely going to book an appointment at some point, thanks 😊

@lilluce95 glad I'm not alone! I have only made a mental checklist but I can't rely on that with the baby brain 😂. I definitely need to make a checklist on my phone, great idea.

@Onedayatatime24 Good luck for Tuesday! My friend has an ickle bubba pram and she really likes it so I'm tempted too. It is certainly is a bargain for all that. I saw the same/ very similar set on Argos for bit cheaper not sure what the difference is...(https://www.argos.co.uk/product/2000187)

The thing I struggle with prams some people say its worth buying an expensive set especially as we may use it for future kids as well. But other people are telling me not to bother they grow out so fast and you might want to get a more lightweight stroller when they're older anyway. Also not sure if sometimes you're just paying extra for the name or if the quality is better 🤔

Kalodin · 24/08/2023 09:57

Best of luck @PartRadish ! Hope everything is all okay and you have a lovely scan

Thank you @lilluce95 - also I'm the same as you with lists and research. I've made myself a folder with research on pregnancy, labour, postpartum and then also actual stuff we need vs want. I'm currently making a print out of labour positions. I recall in my 1st labour that MWs just kept telling me to lay down and I birthed on my back, which is why I'm sure I ended up pushing for 6 hours and ended up with nerve damage. I didn't research enough or advocate enough and DH didn't have a clue either so I thought if I have picture prompts it will remind me in labour and help DH too recall positions that may help.
