Welcome to all those who are pregnant following a miscarriage/s. A space where we can share our anxieties and our joys.

@suz2285 yes, it's so strange how they do things differently depending where you live! It's like this blood flow thing, I think I understood that in most places they check it only if you are at risk, but in my hospital they test systematically at the 20 weeks scan (I'm not sure about that, but it's my understanding) in any case, I feel grateful that they have done it. It's worrying, and more stress for me (like I needed that...), but at least that means I will have extra growth scans, and they will really keep an eye on me. Thank you both, I think I will start taking some aspirin and will see next week what the consultant says. I have some at home already: I was taking it with my last pregnancy in March (not prescribed, but like you I decided to try after reading a lot about it), but it didn't make any difference and I still miscarried. That's also why I didn't bother to take it this time as blood clotting doesn't seem to be my problem. Preeclampsia is something else though 😬

suz2285 · 26/09/2023 13:38

@LuneDArgent I don't think starting asprin now will be an issue, but you could also probably just wait another week. I know they did check some blood flow on my 20 week scan but not sure what blood flow it was, maybe the heart? Dont recall them mentioning pressure. Also the same when people talk about cervix length, it's not something routine here but then lots of people talking about it makes me anxious they haven't checked at all! it is good they'll keep an eye on you though and hopefully it'll be absolutely nothing to worry about!

Most of my friends who've had issues like high BP, low Papp-A and things like that have all had extra scans etc and babies all born safely with no issues 😁

LuneDArgent · 26/09/2023 13:58

@suz2285 ah maybe they checked the same as me for the blood flow then, but didn't mention anything to you if it was normal.
About the cervix length, I understand your worry. I had a scan to check it at 21 weeks, but it's only because I had a lletz last year, otherwise they wouldn't have done it (it was fine hopefully).
I think we are just so aware of everything that can go wrong because of our experiences. My sister had a perfect pregnancy and never worried about anything: every time I mention something to her that I'm worried about (blood flow, cervix length, sleeping position, reduced movements, what could be harmful for the baby, etc.) she doesn't even know what I'm talking about and tells me that they never told her anything about all that 😂 I wish I could be like her!

suz2285 · 26/09/2023 14:07

@LuneDArgent oh that's the reason 100%, my mums a midwife and half the stuff I ask her about she's all "very rare, don't worry about it" etc... but you can't not worry about things after you've had a bad experience, also I think social media doesn't help as it make "rare" things seem much more common as people can gather and talk about it so freely now, they didn't have so many scans and no internet back when my mums generation were pregnant so lots of people had no idea about things, and back when my gran's generation were pregnant it was just normal that people had issues in pregnancy a lot more! Both my gran and my MIL had a miscarriage and neither talk about it, having said that i've only told a handful of people about mine!

Lots of people sail through pregnancy without thinking about anything! Or even really knowing what is going on! I like to have all the information but yes it can cause anxiety when you know too many things... Anyway i'm trying to remember that "most" pregnancies go fine, even ones with small issues along the way 😀

Brokenpancreas94 · 26/09/2023 14:48

@suz2285 @LuneDArgent blood flow that is checked is whether it's going in the right directions etc and reaching everywhere that it should...I only know because on my rescan my consultant had a registrar in the room training and they were talking about everything.

I also think it depends on the doctor you see in regards to what they suggest you take! In my last pregnancy at my booking in appointment the midwife I saw said I'd need to take blood thinning injections that wasn't even a doctor who said it, but this time round it's not been mentioned once 🤷‍♀️

I don't think a doctor would advise against taking aspirin to be honest, but again I'm not a doctor 😅 xx

ChloeN · 26/09/2023 16:30

@SparkleFly I had one too but I never bled, it went by 15 weeks xx

tulipsunday · 26/09/2023 18:40

Glad all was well at the scan @SparkleFly.

I had my 25wk appointment today. Heard the heartbeat and yes she measured bump for the first time.

She said I will get some scans nearer the end of pregnancy due to my baby being big last time (9 pounds 6). So although they aren't always that accurate I am glad it will be monitored.

Hope you all are doing ok x

@suz2285 it's so true!! I really like to know and understand everything, but yes, it causes anxiety...

@Brokenpancreas94 Ah I see, then I don't think it's the same thing. Mine was a uterine artery Doppler measurement, checking if there is some resistance in the blood flow. They take a measurement in the left and right artery, and the the total should be less than 2.5 (mine was 2.63)

@tulipsunday it's good that you will have extra scans!

Brokenpancreas94 · 26/09/2023 18:55

@LuneDArgent ah yeah I don't think I had that, I've had a fetal echo too! I've got to go for a 3rd attempt of a fetal echo next week, which is making me very anxious! Xx

Brokenpancreas94 · 26/09/2023 18:57

Glad your appointment went well @tulipsunday always good having extra scans isn't it! I have so many still to come! Next week and then after 28 week scan every 4 weeks!

tulipsunday · 26/09/2023 21:03

@Brokenpancreas94 hopefully third time lucky! 🤞🤞

Brokenpancreas94 · 26/09/2023 21:11

@tulipsunday he blooming wants to behave 😂😂 should be more visible now as he's bigger! Excited to see him again but also nervous too!

suz2285 · 27/09/2023 09:20

I'm waiting for my 24 week midwife appointment now, see what they say!

Then we've got the last try at our 3D scan tomorrow 😂🤞 a bit like @Brokenpancreas94 only ours is just for funsies 😂 feels like a lot of scans!

But if all ok with the rest of this pregnancy then this will likely be my last scan!!

TheBirdintheCave · 27/09/2023 09:28

Freaking out now as my nausea which was at 90% yesterday is at about 20% today. I've had some stretching cramps too on and off on either side, but mostly the right for the last day. Trying to stay calm but I wish our scan was today instead of tomorrow.

suz2285 · 27/09/2023 10:16

@TheBirdintheCave how far along are you now? My nausea came and went from around 9-11 weeks, some days i was panicking cos i felt ok, then a few days later i felt awful again, it's normal for it to fluctuate sometimes. Stretching and cramping also totally normal, it just sucks at this stage as you've no idea what is going on inside....

Midwife was fine, did fundal height (90% percentile so far), bp, urine, heartrate of baby all fine, got my Mat B 1 which i need to give to work this week I guess and my form for the Scottish Baby Box, which we don't get until a few weeks before but I will send that away too. Also was told our antenatal classes are still online which sucks! But i guess means we can do them from the comfort of the house! and those won't be until way later on either....

The best news- and i hope this is correct is that they're not recommending me for the GTT, they said they'll check my sugar again in 4 weeks time on my repeat bloods instead!! 😃I hope that is correct cos i did not want to have to do the GTT!

TheBirdintheCave · 27/09/2023 10:25

@suz2285 Ooh you're so lucky you get the baby box. I've always thought they looked really cool!

I'm 6+6 today. Nausea has mostly come back since my post and I was retching before when I got up to go to the loo so hopefully everything is still ok 😅 I hate panicking so much.

suz2285 · 27/09/2023 10:38

@TheBirdintheCave yeah still really early so the symptoms will definately fluctuate!

Yeah loads of people here whine about the baby box, but it's so great, loads of useful stuff and the box will be our downstairs safe area for baby if we need to put him down, saves us buying a moses basket or anything for downstairs!

Brokenpancreas94 · 27/09/2023 12:55

@TheBirdintheCave my nausea fluctuated loads too in the first trimester, and it did make me anxious as well, but in my first pregnancy I didn't have any nausea at all really. It is crazy how each pregnancy can be so different. The worrying as well probably won't help nausea either but it is so hard not to worry isn't it. If it gets worse or bothers you too much you could ask your GP for some antisickness meds? I still occasionally take one now at 23 weeks.

@suz2285 still so jealous that you get the baby box haha! All we get is a couple of samples, loads of leaflets and coupons that I won't use haha xx

TheBirdintheCave · 27/09/2023 13:06

@Brokenpancreas94 I think I need it to stick around for my own sanity 😅 It lasted until week 19 with my son and I was too scared to take the anti sickness then.

Brokenpancreas94 · 27/09/2023 13:09

@TheBirdintheCave yeah that makes sense too! Ah wow really! I just couldn't hack the feeling sick, and being diabetic the nausea made it hard to treat hypos 😫 hopefully all be okay with you though. ❤️

LuneDArgent · 27/09/2023 13:32

@TheBirdintheCave I'm glad your nausea came back and you can feel a bit reassured! Not long to wait until your scan now 🤞At this stage my nausea was not very strong and was coming and going, it was making me very anxious, so I understand the worry. I was sure it was because the pregnancy was not developing (I had really strong symptoms from 4 weeks with my miscarriage at 11weeks, with the other 3 MC, the symptoms were never very strong), but everything was well this time (and I finally had very bad nausea from 9 weeks that lasted also until 18-19 weeks 😅)

@suz2285 glad your appointment went well this morning! I'm impatient for mine tomorrow 😊

LuneDArgent · 27/09/2023 13:35

And I also didn't want to take anti sickness medication, even though it was offered to me, because I found reassuring to feel so bad 😅

SparkleFly · 27/09/2023 15:06

Ah yes definitely jealous here too about the baby box!

And I know what you mean about getting anxious about not feeling nauseous! I felt awful last Saturday night and into Sunday morning, then nothing for 2 days. My mind was on overdrive!

Well after trying to register with the midwife at 7 weeks and not succeeding because their online form doesn't work, someone eventually manually added me to the system a week ago and today I get an email saying my booking appointment is on Sunday at 1pm. I can't make it!! I just called to explain and they're like "oh but you'll be 10 weeks next week and we should really see you before then" I was like "well to be honest that's not really my fault?!" So god knows when my 12 week scan will actually be. They told me that my assigned midwife only works Sundays and they can't change it to another one and they also can't see her diary, so I've got to wait until the weekend to find out what they're actually going to do about it. Sorry for the rant, they don't make things easy though do they!

suz2285 · 27/09/2023 15:48

@SparkleFly ah man! Sundays are weird! Is there any chance you can change your plans to go? You really want to get the 12 weeks scan in the right timeframe as it causes more stress if you can't get it within the time... or like me they can't take the measurements and therefore you're in limbo for another 3/4 weeks waiting for other blood tests 🙈

That's so annoying though, If it's anything like most of us their systems don't seem very joined up and half of them have no continuity so no one knows what's going on between appointments! It's a bit fustrating! Hopefully you can speak to her maybe via telephone and get them to refer for your scan at least!!

SparkleFly · 27/09/2023 17:04

Update: they've now offered me a later time that day which I can do, phew! Hopefully date for 12 week scan will follow swiftly. Can't believe I'll be 10 weeks on Monday, then it's just 2 weeks until that first proper scan! I'm 40 as well so I'm hoping that my 'geriatric' status will bag me more scans 😅
