@firsttimelondonmummy I had meant to reply something suitably disparaging about your experience with the NHS midwife. They want people to take responsibility for their health, and then when we do it’s ignored or undermined. It annoys me that the “system” only accepts one model of maternity care and doesn’t always acknowledge the nuances. Have you got the choice to see a different midwife?

BobbySD345 · 10/05/2023 07:06

@tigerlily0 I heard that gas and air can make you vomit. It made me dizzy and I'm not good with feeling faint dizzy or nauseous so I kept refusing it, much to the midwives annoyance for some reason - surely it's my choice! I also felt I completely lost control in established labour. So much so I don't remember a lot of it except for the pain and the sudden urge to push. My Husband said I looked possessed and my eyes were rolling into the back of my head. I also ripped his t-shirt 😬 I am torn between just going all natural again knowing although it was hellish, I managed, or opting for an epidural for a more relaxed experience where I am more in control. The only thing holding me back are side effects of the epidural so I think maybe I just need to do some research.

firsttimelondonmummy · 10/05/2023 10:34

@BobbySD345 I thought with an epidural you have less control as you then often have to give birth on your back and that they can prolong labour due to the numbing?
Thats what completely put me off was the loss of control.
I have tried and tested gas and air due to an awful open fracture last year and so know it works pretty well so I’m hoping to stay on that if I am able to birth naturally! 🤞🏻

I have lots of ‘up to 1 month’ size vests / sleepsuits etc from Next but now thinking whether I should buy some ‘first size’ bits as well?

In June / summer will they be wearing sleepsuits much? I have lots already in the other sizes, but thinking whether I’ll be using them?

I don’t want to have another size and then not use them, feels wasteful!

Why don’t you ask about a mobile epidural? I like the idea of feeling in control mentally with an epidural, whilst also being able to move around a bit, so was suggested that by the midwife at my bump and baby class. Although if you know gas and air works for you then maybe you won’t need/want to!

Algor1thm · 10/05/2023 11:23

I'm also very torn still! I had a long, unmedicated labour last time, and I'm completely undecided on whether I want to go for another natural waterbirth or whether I just say screw it and have the epidural 🙈 Although I'm proud of myself for my first birth, wow it was tough!

firsttimelondonmummy · 10/05/2023 11:33

@FLA92 I want a water birth and don’t think it’s possible if so?
I also want to push baby out as quick as safely possible rather than have any possible delay 😂

firsttimelondonmummy · 10/05/2023 11:35

@Zaalfruit @PurBal I’m honestly baffled by it all.
I’m seeing my less than ideal midwife Friday so I’ll let you know how it goes 😬

Algor1thm · 10/05/2023 11:42

Yeah, you can't have a waterbirth with an epidural because you can't get your spine wet.

BobbySD345 · 10/05/2023 11:52

@firsttimelondonmummy I mean more in the sense that as I went into established labour or whatever the proper name is, I was in that much pain I was just writhing around. Couldn't focus. Couldn't understand what was going on. Very upset. That sort of thing. Position wise I found being on my back the least painful anyway. I just wondered if I had the epidural whether I would be more part of the experience if that makes sense. More able to remember and to listen and understand what my body wants me to do. I don't think there is a right or wrong way and being honest if I plan for an epidural I bet I won't end up getting one lol.

BobbySD345 · 10/05/2023 11:55

@FLA92 up to 1 month and first size are probably about the same. Its tricky to know how warm it will be and what we will need. We are fortunate that we have the up to 7lb sleepsuits and newborn from our DS which are neutral. I wouldn't spend much. Maybe consider the plain white packs from Asda in first size if you feel you need a few more in? X

BobbySD345 · 10/05/2023 11:56

@Algor1thm this is literally me and my dilemma ! Toughest thing I've ever done but I have done it so, I can do it again without the epidural, right?! Lol

tigerlily0 · 10/05/2023 12:12

@BobbySD345 I know exactly what you mean, I could have written what you said... I even ripped my husbands T-shirt from the sleeve. The urge to push came very quickly because the mw broke my waters without consent and then walked away from me and said il be back in couple hours, I had already been in Labour 24hrs and when she left the room babys head literally was at the entrance so I was in shock.

So yea I'm considering epidural so I don't have the loss of control of losing my sh*t. I did both with just gas and air and the whole Labour I managed by swaying and breathing. But I think cos it's my third, I know too much now and what to expect so know what I am willing or not willing to do. Both times I was in a crouching potty position, so I don't like the idea of laying on my back on a bed at all but maybe I can do side with epidural.

firsttimelondonmummy · 10/05/2023 12:15

@BobbySD345 makes total sense!!!
As you said you have to do what it right for you and there certainly isn’t a right or wrong way! ❤️

tigerlily0 · 10/05/2023 12:16

Also I was looking forward to a water birth and honestly hated it, with every contraction I was just slipping, there was nothing to grab hold of and I felt really out of control. Plus my waters hadn't broken so really I don't think I should have been in there because my waters couldn't break and I think that must have prolonged my Labour.
I'm just not looking forward to any of it, will say this though, expect the unexpected literally.

My friend has just had a third baby and her first 2 were normal birth and just gas and air etc. this one- she had to have an induction, ended up with complications , won't go into detail to scare anyone. But then had to be rushed into emergency c section where both her and baby were at risk. Theyr both doing well now thank god, but it has been traumatic and very unexpected

Belami · 10/05/2023 12:18

I've said to the midwife ideally I want to start in the pool but then have an epidural if needed as I've no idea how I'm going to react to the pain. Does anyone know if you can have gas & air when you're having a water birth? I keep wondering whether they'd be more likely to try and talk you into staying in the pool and going unmediated once you're in though...

One thing I'm really scared of is being in loads of pain and then not having access to epidural because of staffing or something. I get what you mean @BobbySD345 i'm such a wuss and I really want to feel mentally in control.

I asked about mobile epidural and I've been told you can get into other positions with help generally.

firsttimelondonmummy · 10/05/2023 12:23

@tigerlily0 that is disgusting!
Not sure if it’ll help but did you take a birth preference sheet in last time?
I’ve made my partner learn mine back to front so at least then he can advocate for me if I can’t do it for myself.
The one I found online was pretty comprehensive and I added in notes (attached the one I used for reference).
I’ve filled in three copies to account for changes of staff etc.

@Belami gas and air is fine for water births 😊

tigerlily0 · 10/05/2023 12:31

@Belami not sure if they can deny u an epidural. But in my hospital the pools were in the birth centre so if u wanted epidural that was in the Labour ward.

@firsttimelondonmummy thanks for that il have a look. I have spoken to my consultant about my birth preferences so Theyr on my record too

Zaalfruit · 10/05/2023 12:34

@firsttimelondonmummy I asked my brother about private and nhs . He works for nhs icu and said that a private report is valid and the nhs takes referrals all the time from private so you should contact pals and lodge a complaint. He said it doesn’t matter who spots what - everything is valid and a case of where it should be looked into. ( Even window to the womb if they pass on details from a scan to the nhs - it’s part of duty of care for nhs to look into it )

BobbySD345 · 10/05/2023 13:47

@Belami I think in the hospital we use the birthing centre is very much water births, calm environment, gas and air. Anything requiring a doctor like an epidural I believe has to take place on the main labour ward. I could be wrong though.

BobbySD345 · 10/05/2023 13:50

@tigerlily0 100% you can't plan for it but i think aslong as even if you have a birthing plan, you accept the fact it may not follow the plan and that's OK. I know friends who have had a plan and it's gone to pot and others that haven't had a plan and had an amazing birth. You're so right with expect the unexpected. I can't tell you the things that they did to me which I never expected were even going to be a thing while I was ripping my husband's tshirt and growling like a dog (so he says lolll) 🙈🤪

Algor1thm · 10/05/2023 13:55

Yeah a birth centre definitely wouldn't allow an epidural, the only place an epidural can be carried out safely is a hospital labour ward because you need continuous monitoring for the rest of your labour with an increased risk of baby becoming distressed.

Anyone else's baby breech??

We are having fortnightly growth scans at the moment and CTG monitoring twice a week. Growth scan yesterday at 33+6 and baby is on 11th centile (where she was last time) and bum first!! Got another scan at 36+2 and if the has turned and stays head down we will have a sweep at 38 and 39 then induced at 40 but if she's still bum down I don't know what will happen!

Any advice on how to get her to turn??? Xx

Mine was breech at 30 and 33 weeks and then head down by 36. Did all the spinning babies tricks - have a look at their website 😊
