Can I ask anyone who has had an epidural before, did it make you sick at all? I did it all with paracetamol the first time until right at the end where they gave me pethidine but I have never known pain like it, absolutely excruciating. Re the epidural, I have a nausea and vomiting phobia you see...weird I know !

PurBal · 09/05/2023 15:00

@BobbySD345 not at all, I was advised not to eat though (not sure why). I honestly felt “normal” and preferred it to gas and air (which I did use as well).

Zaalfruit · 09/05/2023 15:01

@PurBal I packed my bag - just need to add my outfit for when I leave the hospital . I also realised I forgot to buy milk and newborn baby vests 😫😫😫😫 will pop out later to Asda just to grab some vests . I have 0-3 months vests but they look huge. I also needed nipple cream
but found a small sample which I think is enough for now . I really don’t like the outfit I have packed for baby but I’m sure it will be fine.

Did you pack snacks? My hospital told me to pack a isotonic drink and snacks . I feel if I buy them now I’m going to eat them.

PurBal · 09/05/2023 15:06

@Zaalfruit I will do. I packed them with DC1 but then had an epidural and wasn’t allowed to eat them. Also didn’t pack enough savoury snacks (lots of custard creams I replaced twice 😂).

BobbySD345 · 09/05/2023 15:18

@PurBal thank you that's really helpful. Because of having GD first time round I couldn't eat anything because they were monitoring my levels. I think this time i will have a better experience all round as I can snack and keep my energy up with drinks. I may also consider an epidural.

BobbySD345 · 09/05/2023 15:19

@PurBal Just re read your message and you say advised "not to eat" ! Lol sorry. Mis read it. I've done a bag of snacks this time but they're more for my DH who struggled last time as he has to graze all day. Mainly biscuits and crisps so far plus red bull.

BobbySD345 · 09/05/2023 15:22

@Zaalfruit I have almost packed the bags ! Still got a bit of a list of bits. Like you I need to figure out a going home outfit. Hard to know what the weather will be like. I may just come home in PJs to be fair !

Bit of a weird one ladies.
Don’t really get on with my midwife and she thinks we are stupid for having private scans and thinks they are a waste of money.
She tends to refer to inaccuracy but I have these at an expensive ultrasound clinic in London where anyone with private maternal care would go not at a window to the womb etc.
I’ve had a scan today and he’s gone from around the 50th percentile in week 26(+5) to the 12th in week 33(+5).
My private sonographer has said to show my midwife and that she would expect the NHS to offer me a scan given this but I know my midwife is unlikely to take any notice of my report (attached for reference so you can see the depth of detail).
She said I need to come back in 2 weeks if the NHS won’t give me a scan but I’d rather not spend another £220.
Anyone got any advice? Should I ask to speak to a consultant?

For the second time mums what size sleepsuits and vests would you recommend I pack? I’m being induced at 37 weeks, could go in to the beginning of 38 weeks and he is predicted to be 7 pounds, me and my partner are both tall so thinking he could be a long baby!

Hlc86 · 09/05/2023 15:50

@firsttimelondonmummy I was told they would only offer a NHS is baby drops below the 10th? (mind you my midwife is useless aslo) but I don't know why she is so anti private as they all have to pass the same training, NHS, private, fancy ones etc all have the same training and exams so if she thinks you should be offered one in her expert opinion then you should be, if you have no luck with her as another one they may be more willing

So we have done the same - private scans at the FMC in London as in my first pregnancy, baby's growth slowed at 34 weeks (picked up when midwife measured my bump and confirmed on a growth scan) and he was delivered 2 weeks later by emergency c-section. We have, however, also had the same scans done on the NHS due to what happened last time. I like the comfort of getting the private scans done at the FMC though as they are done by a consultant and my consultant-led care at my local NHS hospital has been anything but (I have only seen a consultant once and I'm now 34 weeks). I ask the private consultant all the questions my NHS consultant doesn't have the time for, and get them to double check the plan that my NHS hospital has come up with. Sounds OTT but in my first pregnancy my NHS hospital were reasonably relaxed, until they read the private reports which then informed their whole plan from that point onwards.

This is 100% something that your midwife should be taking very seriously and you should be getting growth scans as a result, and potentially also CTGs every other day and dopplers a couple of times a week if baby's growth continues to drop. If your midwife won't listen, then I would rock up at your maternity day assessment unit and ask to see a doctor. I have learnt this time round that it pays to be demanding when you have concerns like this.

We are in the same boat with this pregnancy - baby has dropped from 50th centile at 28 weeks to 10th centile at 32 weeks. We have a repeat scan tomorrow at my local hospital and if growth has dropped again then they will (hopefully!) be following the plan above, with a view to getting me to 37 weeks but probably not any later.

Hlc86 · 09/05/2023 15:52

@Ally1992 I would go tiny baby and newborn just incase as their estimates are never right

BobbySD345 · 09/05/2023 16:12

@Ally1992 Hiya. Our son was born at 37 weeks and was 6lb9oz. Newborn (not Asda "first size" which seemed bigger) were fine for Hospital and once we got home we bought some of the 7lb and under sleepsuits from Next. Hope this helps x

BobbySD345 · 09/05/2023 16:15

@firsttimelondonmummy I think if it was me I'd go to triage. If you have to pre book tell them your anxiety is through the roof and need to see a Doctor. Tell them everything and I'm sure they'll check you and baby over.

Ally1992 · 09/05/2023 16:22

@Hlc86 and @BobbySD345 thank you that was what I was thinking, I need to go and get some newborn sizes as we have loads of 0-3 months and they look massive! I have a couple of tiny baby sleepsuits just in case and suppose newborn vests underneath would be fine?

Whentwobecomesthree · 09/05/2023 16:30

@BobbySD345 I wouldn't say I'm a vomitty person at all so it wasn't usual for me but the epidural did make me vomit. My blood pressure dropped (I think that's what it was) and then I went all dizzy and started vomiting. Of course it happened right when the midwife and my partner left the room. But I pressed the button and there were literally about 8 people in my room instantly. They injected something and the nausea cleared right away. It wasn't particularly pleasant but I would not hesitate to have an epidural again. They are magic!

BobbySD345 · 09/05/2023 17:06

@Ally1992 if we have a hot summer our babies may just end up in vests anyway ! They will just look a bit baggy round the neck and sag under the nappy if theyre 0-3 and she is little. It doesn't really matter ! I'm sure our DS moved into 0-3 after about 8 weeks and that was mainly because his feet were getting squished in the smaller sleepsuits !

Funfamilytimes · 09/05/2023 17:45

@Belami I’m going for a water birth hopefully and if not then epidural (hopefully!) with giving birth on my left side 😬

rllrsk8 · 09/05/2023 17:58

I'd like a water birth too but everything is a bit up in the air until I find out next week whether will be induced or not. So I'm just keeping an open mind!

I've packed mainly first size things - they are generally up to about 9lb, because I was worried that newborn would be too small as think baby will be on the bigger size. Having said that if I get a date for induction I might panic buy some newborn stuff just in case, as likely will be a week or so early!

firsttimelondonmummy · 09/05/2023 18:21

@ireneadler101 that was unbelievably helpful thank you.
It is good to be prepared for what the next steps could be.
Sending you all the positive energy for your scan tomorrow 🤞🏻
Totally agree with you on the NHS by the way.
My private appointments have been the only ones to reassure me.
Ny NHS 20 weeks she told me she thought he had club foot, private said no way, private was right.
I’d have been so stressed had my private sonographer not been able to sense check my previous scans.
I don’t think I’d ever trust the NHS solely.
Not for lack of skill but for the fact they are overwhelmed.
I’ve felt like a cattle cow at every appointment.

I rang triage as @BobbySD345 suggested (thank you @BobbySD345 🙏🏻) and the lady said she’s emailed my midwife to book me in for a scan given this information.
(So glad I don’t have to talk to my midwife about it).

@Hlc86 I don’t get it either? It’s not like I’m going to some back street clinic.
I think because of his dramatic drop they scan (50th to 12th in 5 weeks).
Just hoping it all gets checked sooner rather than later.

Hi all! Sorry, not sure if any of you remember me! I actually started off the original thread for the June babies, but then slipped completely off the radar for a lot of this pregnancy. I've been so busy this time round with a toddler and work that I haven't been on mumsnet in months. I hope you're all doing well and not too uncomfortable getting towards the end!

I'm 37 weeks now and have just finished work 🎉 Bump and baby are both measuring obscenely large, so I'm having serial growth scans, and feeling a lot of pressure to book in for an induction which I'm currently resisting.

Hoping to spend a little more time on mumsnet now I'm on mat leave, and looking forward to seeing all of the babies make their appearances 😊

PurBal · 09/05/2023 20:39

Hello 👋 @Algor1thm

Zaalfruit · 09/05/2023 21:05

@firsttimelondonmummy just catching up - that’s so blasé of the nhs midwife . A private report should trigger a check up or even worth a conversation- why is she discrediting the private scans ? I’m glad you rang triage - if in doubt you can always get them to arrange any further check ups . There is always atleast one consultant on the triage ward and they will see you and most likely advocate for you.

@PurBal Deffo going to bring some savoury scans last time after giving birth I was craving ready salted crisps and peanuts. I will tell my husband to hide them from me.

tigerlily0 · 09/05/2023 21:31

I was vomity for both my pregnancies - antthing I are just came up 5 min later. I thought that was normal until I have seen women eating and drinking during Labour, I was running on empty for 24hrs with my daughter.

Both were only gas and air and this time I want the option of epidural as someone mentioned u feel more in control and I hate losing control, which I felt I did with both mine when I was in the transition stage near the end.

I'm 37 weeks tmrw and had a growth scan today baby is growing fine and is head down and in the correct position. Hope s/he stays like this now until birth and not move positions! I haven't packed my hospital bag at all, washed some new baby bits and finally opened up my Doona and isofix after a month of it being sat in its box. Still need a chest of drawers for baby's room!

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 09/05/2023 22:43

@BobbySD345 I didn't vomit with gas and air but I did seconds after the second epidural. I had a spinal block too later but I don't think it made me sick. I felt really faint and fizzy though for a few hours but I think it was because my blood count dropped.

Next has nice small clothes if anyone has a less than 6lb baby. We got some lovely 3lb and 5lb sleepsuits. Outgrows quickly though!
