I'm curious! I've only just come across this term!
What did your partner/husband give you if anything? And for which number baby?

I'm pregnant with my first and our midwife mentioned it in our NCT class, specifically an eternity ring! Apparently it's quite common..? I fit in the 'millennial generation' and apparently have been living under a rock 😂

I don't know about 'push' present (i had an emergency c section and it was horrible) but my husband got me a beautiful art deco sapphire and diamond ring which i adore rather than an eternity ring (which I wasn't interested in).

I was 32, baby is now 1

Buying gifts for people? No, I believe it’s a world wide phenomenon

Have you deliberately missed the point, or just not understood?

and29ineachleapyear · 04/02/2023 10:35

DH bought me a ruby pendant when DD was born (her birthstone). Nothing when DS was born but i did buy myself a locket with his photo in it.

Yesthatismychildsigh · 04/02/2023 10:35

push present is a revolting term. And this is the sort of questioning used by what passes as bone idle ‘reporters’ at low rent media.

GrazingSheep · 04/02/2023 10:35

My eldest is 26. Dh got me an eternity ring. I wear it every day. When our second was born we got a new car!

chupachump · 04/02/2023 10:36

@Johnnysgirl I don't think they've missed the point at all. Maybe they're just trying not to be such a joyless little fun sponge. 👍

IME it’s something the high earner finance type group do as well as the Insta crowd
Higher earner types? No. Insta crowd? Absolutely.

Well I know quite a few high earner finance types who do it. IME. It may not be yours.

Snugglemonkey · 04/02/2023 10:38

My mum got an eternity ring when she had me, 42 years ago. I got an eternity ring after my first. We have never called it a push present. I think an eternity ring is lovely. A baby cements a relationship forever in my mind. I know some people do walk away, but I know neither of us ever would. Having a child, for us, means that no matter what happens, we will always be a family.

I got pâté, cheeses, wine after both dc.

Sux2buthen · 04/02/2023 10:38

Yes @chupachump life is short it should be nice and fun as you can make it

Saschka · 04/02/2023 10:39

My mum brought me a latte (I had been an inpatient on bedrest for the previous 8 weeks). It was fantastic.

DH did all of the 6am feeds for the first two months, which meant I could sleep through from 3am-9am. I valued that far more than a poxy ring! (DS was prem with low blood sugars, so we were mixed feeding anyway)

feejee · 04/02/2023 10:39

Nothing for me. But my father in law bought my mother in law a new swarovski crystal ornament as a new grandchild present!

I'm sure you do. It doesn't make it a "thing".

MatildaJayne · 04/02/2023 10:39

On the day, some garage flowers! But I did get an eternity ring. This was 25 years ago. It’s definitely an old tradition.

I think a push present is all kinds of tacky and wrong.

I think the term push present it awful. But I don’t think there’s anything inherently wrong with a man wanting to buy a nice gift for the woman he loves after she’s been through pregnancy and childbirth.

I got an eternity band a couple of years ago, not sure if it was a “push present” or a 40th birthday present to be honest, they were within a few weeks of each other. We went together to pick it about a year later (wanted my fat fingers to slim down first, then covid, so….).

RudsyFarmer · 04/02/2023 10:41

This is a wealthy person thing. We just ploughed straight into sleepless nights and cracked nipples. No one was thinking about jewellery or art.

MotherofBingo · 04/02/2023 10:42

I didn't get anything for my first, for my second I got reeces pieces and a bottle of Pepsi max that I wasn't allowed to eat or drink straight away anyway because I was nil by mouth and on tiny measurements of water for the first 24 hours afterwards 🤣 so nothing spectacular but honestly I was happy with my babies. I think push presents are a fairly new concept, I'm 28 and still only know one woman who actually got a push present.

Businessflake · 04/02/2023 10:42

MistyFrequencies · 04/02/2023 09:51

Art. I got great art. It hangs on our walls and the plan is to pass it on to the kids when they move out.

This is a great idea, the starting of family heirlooms.

MatildaJayne · 04/02/2023 10:43

My friend had a non-traditional wedding ring and had a new stone added with each child. This was 20-25 years ago. She was German so maybe it’s a German tradition, or just of their own devising. Never called a push present though.

Johnnysgirl · 04/02/2023 10:44

Of course there isn't. It's the "I've pushed your baby out, gimme diamonds" thing that people think is gross and tacky. Although I'm a complete fun sponge for saying it 😁

JaJaDonkey · 04/02/2023 10:44

Never used the phrase 'push present,' but DP bought me one of those litter grabbers for reaching things (c-section), a flask for keeping coffee warm while feeding, and a photo book of our relationship so far. Perfect.

shinynewapple22 · 04/02/2023 10:44

I've never heard the phrase 'push present' before - but I think that an eternity ring after the birth of first child is quite an old tradition for some people.

MatildaJayne · 04/02/2023 10:45

Coincidentally, a stone fell out of my eternity ring just as my marriage foundered and my exH was starting his affair. Weird!

CountryLifeIsTwigsAndShit · 04/02/2023 10:45

My parents in their 60s - dad gave mum an eternity ring baby 1.
Me in my 40s - nothing.

AWholeNewWorls · 04/02/2023 10:45

Somebody said cracked nipples.. first time I've come across that one 😭 My breastfeeding workshop is in a couple of weeks still. Be brave @AWholeNewWorls

Nothing! I find the idea a bit tacky. After having our second he got me a big bunch of flowers (because I asked him to 😆). We were both more focused on the baby than getting gifts.
