@LT103 ive made a list (basically copied my friend who gave birth in September), but all I’ve bought is a changing mat, so don’t worry 🤣

Kelvie103 · 09/01/2023 08:53

Its making me a bit nervous too so glad I'm not the only one who's not bought anything yet! I've not even heard of most of these brands haha and have no idea what baby will need. I'm only 16 weeks though so still got plenty of time and not really planning on doing anything until after my 20 week scan as I'm still quite anxious about something going wrong. I am going shopping with my mum in a couple of weeks though for maternity clothes and will have a quick look at baby things then so it's a start right?

I keep seeing adverts pop up for this free personal shop thing they do at mamas and papas so I've told my husband I'm dragging him to that just to give us some help but wasn't planning to go until March and now wondering if I should do it earlier.

BobbySD345 · 09/01/2023 08:58

@firsttimelondonmummy It might be the right one for you but have a mooch somewhere with loads of options and ask the staff to demo them all for you ! It's fun !

Dewintergarden · 09/01/2023 10:37

I went to JL and I was so surprised how heavy the buggies/car seats are and that's without a baby in them. Those ftm JL do a free nursery booking appointment in store which you can book online, I've decided to do this as it is so overwhelming and I don't want to buy unnecessarily.
Separately, is anyone else not experiencing movement at 17weeks with an anterior placenta? I'm so worried and not sure I can wait 3 weeks until my 20 week scan.

Ooh I didn't realise M&P do one as well. I feel like they have more bundle buys and sales still on. Thanks!

firsttimelondonmummy · 09/01/2023 10:54

@justbelieve I really wanted the reef but was put off by the size.
We went to John Lewis at the weekend to try a few out.
They didn’t have the compact folding carrycot for the reef that the dune had and the reef one was ginormous.
If you’ve got a big house you’ll be fine but we just don’t have that much space 😭

@Dewintergarden I’ve got a posterior placenta and still haven’t felt anything at 16.5.
I don’t believe you should be feeling anywhere near this early I think it’s post 20 weeks for anterior placenta.

OP posts:
justbelieve · 09/01/2023 11:01

@Dewintergarden ive also got an anterior placenta and haven’t felt anything, or at least haven’t felt anything that I’m aware if baby. I’ve had a couple of pops but that could be gas.

I’ve heard it’s really normal, so whilst it’s difficult not to worry, trust that everything is ok ❤️ I know easier said than done!

Dewintergarden · 09/01/2023 11:28

Thank you for the reassuring messages @firsttimelondonmummy and @justbelieve I had a midwife ask if I had felt anything at 16w and when I replied that I had an anterior placenta she was like well you should feel something soon... However, googling says this is normal not to feel anything this early. It is really hard not catastrophising everything at the moment.

BobbySD345 · 09/01/2023 12:48

For everyone talking about feeling movement. I had my 16 week midwife appt this morning. Heard the heartbeat 💓 but when they asked about movement and I said it seems very intermittent, they said its past 24 weeks they like you to start concentrating on movements and any changes go let them know. She reassured me by saying from 14 to around 18 weeks you won't feel much consistency and can go days without feeling any flutters. It's true to say I haven't felt a big flutter since last Monday and she was fine today, heart beating away at 154bpm 😃

To all FTM panicking about what to buy etc, I guarantee not all you buy will be used. Not everything will be suitable. All babies are different and all our home lives are different. What suits one won't suit another. I would strongly recommend buying basics and seeing how you get on. Especially with feeding bundles for formula or breastfeeding, you just cannot say at this stage what you will need. Buy a small starter pack for each and then get on Amazon prime next day delivery when you realise what you do actually need when baby is here. My DH was in Boots a lot the first few weeks buying extras and we bought A LOT initially that didn't get used. Ask friends and relatives what they found were essentials but even then they might not suit you. Have fun with it and don't get overwhelmed! It's the same with clothes. Our DS was 6lb9oz and nothing fitted him. We had to buy loads of small baby bits as we were told the whole way through he would be big so we went with mainly 0-3. My friend just had a boy and he has gone straight into 0-3 so all the newborn and first size she bought is useless.

Hope this helps 🥰 x

justbelieve · 09/01/2023 13:10

@BobbySD345 thank you, it can seem so overwhelming when you see the sheer amount of products on the market!

I’ve heard the same about nappies, so will be buying one pack at size 0 and one at size 1 and then sending the hubby to the shop once we know what size fits baby boy 💙 my friend said she really stocked up on nappies and they were the wrong size because baby was slightly bigger, so I’m going to try and avoid that!

Brownsauce89 · 09/01/2023 14:23

@Dewintergarden I had an anterior placenta last time and didn’t feel anything until 24 weeks. In my limited experience midwives are absolutely lovely and if you are concerned at all though always give them a call! This time I’m feeling the baby and still anxious as anything 🙈

I second the Amazon prime comment.. so useful and no need to buy loads early unless you want to and it makes you happy!

I have a bbhugme pillow, I winced at the price tag but it was amazing when I was pregnant and now 15 months in I still use it for bedtime milk/story time with my toddler. Going to have to steal it back from her room soon for sleeping.. haha!

pippabg · 09/01/2023 16:18

I'm 18 weeks with a posterior placenta and dont know if I've felt anything - hard to know when it's your first! Felt a subtle pop or scratch (!) a few times, but not flutters as described! Could this be it? Midwife mentioned it at 16 week appointment too, which worried me that I should be feeling it, but Google seems to reasssue me that for first time mums it might not be until 20 weeks.

I've not bought anything either apart from a celebratory baby grow after the 12 week scan! Like @Kelvie103, I'm so nervous about things going wrong. We've been browsing online and are going to start making a list of specific products we want after the 20 weeks scan, but wasn't planning on buying anything until 25/30 weeks! Maybe I'm being silly...

Hlc86 · 09/01/2023 16:56

Alot of places have their baby events on now, I've just bought 2x packs of 6 tommee tippee bottles of boots for £28, £14 a pack which I thought was good as aldis is £14 for a 4 pack and asda was £15 for a 4 pack so quite happy with that, they have free delivery and an extra 10% off at the moment 😁

Kelvie103 · 09/01/2023 17:01

Thanks @BobbySD345 and @justbelieve that's really useful about amazon prime and clothes and nappies, I was wondering about how sizes work. I read that newborn size is up to around 8lbs, no idea how big my baby will be but me and my brothers were all over 8lb so maybe my little one won't be so little either! Also not really sure what summer babies wear as everyone I know was born in autumn winter time.

I have an anterior placenta but when I asked at my 12 week scan if that means I won't feel movements until later they just said maybe but not always. I have a friend with a 2 month old who said his wife didn't feel anything until 24 weeks. I've felt a few minor bubbles like gas but I didn't feel gassy and also a couple of times a little flutter like a mild muscle spasm that I've not felt anything like before there but no idea how to tell if that was baby or not.

I have my midwife appointment on Thursday and really hoping they'll listen to the heartbeat but don't know if they do that where I am. Also have a private gender scan booked for Saturday which I'm equal parts excited and nervous for!

salzburginthesnow · 09/01/2023 17:02

Can I join please? It’d be great to chat to others. I’m almost 18 weeks and I felt a big flutter about a week ago and nothing much since. I also have an anterior placenta. I’m nervous that with the big flutter it should have continued? Just wish I could feel more as since the nausea has gone it feels like I’m in limbo. I think this is probably the hardest time before baby kicks…

DrinkingAllTheGin · 09/01/2023 17:28

Has anyone started watching one born every minute for education rather than entertainment?
I'm going to watch with DH and point out every time the fathers do something that would annoy me!

Just watched one where I know the mum and now strapping 14 Yr old baby!

ImHopeful2023 · 09/01/2023 17:58

Hi all like some other posts today I haven't bought anything either kindoff afraid to until after my next scan and hopefully we will find out the gender.. anyone any list of what we need to get would be handy as we will be first time parents

C1umsyGiraffe · 09/01/2023 18:01

@DrinkingAllTheGin I've already told my husband I'm going to force him to watch at least a couple episodes... worried he has no idea what it's like 😂

firsttimelondonmummy · 09/01/2023 18:26

@DrinkingAllTheGin I’m purposefully avoiding I find it traumatising 😂

ImHopeful2023 · 09/01/2023 18:39

Hi @salzburginthesnow I too have an anterior placenta and 29 weeks pregnant just wish we had a way of knowing baby was ok

BobbySD345 · 09/01/2023 19:02

@Kelvie103 If we have a summer like last year we will only need vests at most ! Maybe little rompers. Sleepsuits for cooler days. They still have to have little hats when newborn for outdoors I think even in the summer but a midwife would confirm that. If it helps we are having a girl and I plan on buying short sleeved vests and some sleepsuits and seeing how we get on. Also some lightweight blankets like muslin fabrics.

BobbySD345 · 09/01/2023 19:05

@DrinkingAllTheGin I used to love OBEM on TV but since having DS 3 years ago I haven't faced it since lol 😆

NalaNana · 09/01/2023 21:29

@Kelvie103 I did the mamas and papas free consultation today and it's so worth doing! We ended up buying one of the Ocarro bundles which was discounted in January sales. We picked up some other bits too and as we went over a grand we'll get £100 back as a gift voucher.

It was good too because you can choose when to have it delivered! I went with mid-March just in case (due 31 May) so it isn't being stored in the house for now.

DrinkingAllTheGin · 09/01/2023 22:56

My brother is training to be a paramedic, he said he will tell me what he saw on his OB rotation after I've had baby.
