@Gilm0reGirl that is so nice about the name, but also if you have a girl you get to use her sisters clothes. Mine is due 10 days before my daughters birthday! I have kept a lot of her little clothes too so will be using them regardless of gender, but then will buy some extra bits for the new baby. We are finding out because we are both too impatient for a surprise. I would love it if I could wait though as I can imagine it's so much more exciting finding out!

ancienthouse · 26/08/2022 14:32

@Longbin I forgot the NIPT could tell you the sex. I didn't find out last time but I think I will this time just so I can prepare with names really. All of DDs baby clothes are fine for either so I'm not bothered about that.

Lunabun · 26/08/2022 14:52

@Wouldloveanother I had an NIPT last time, I did get it at a good price though. I believe it was £300ish.

I had mine because my quad test came back 1 in 33 chance of Down's syndrome M. I remember my midwife saying that they were bringing in the NIPT at our trust soon, but not yet so I did have to pay for it. I think the NIPT then came back with 1 in 100,000 chance of Down's syndrome or something like that. I did really enjoy getting the gender early, I have to say.

I'm debating getting one this time before even bothering with the NHS screening. But then I think that because personally I wouldn't terminate, what's the point in spending the money? I think I'm just looking for an excuse to find out the gender early 🤣

Speaking of which, has anyone ever done one of those sneak peak tests? It uses the same technology as the NIPT but it's just an early gender reveal service. I've heard they're pretty unreliable because of contamination when you collect the sample yourself. But, I remember seeing last time round that they offer it for a increased price (£120ish maybe?) if you go to a provider to get a proper blood draw. I suppose that would eliminate the contamination, so it would be quite reliable? Not many places offer it though - I'd have to take a day trip to a city 100 miles away, but honestly I'm tempted 🤣

Longbin · 26/08/2022 13:48

I've calmed down now so I am back 😂

I'm getting the harmony test on 13th. I had it last time and I liked having the reassurance. It comes back much faster now too as they no longer need to send results off to the US.

@Margo34 the NHS don't offer it, sorry.

@Longbin 😂 I know the NHS don't offer it. I asked what is i? I still have no idea what a NIPT is. It tells you the gender as far as I can fathom from other responses?

Lunabun · 26/08/2022 15:46

@Margo34 this is my understanding but please don't take it as gospel - a NIPT test (sometimes called a harmony test as this a brand name I think) is a blood test that measures the chromosomes (or the dna? Is that the same thing? I'm not very sciencey!!) of the baby, as the baby's dna is detectable in the mother's blood from a certain point in the pregnancy.

It's used as a screen for Down's syndrome and other chromosomal abnormalities, and it's much, much more accurate than the tests offered at 12 weeks and/or the quad test at 16 weeks. It's not as reliable as amniocentesis I believe, but amniocentesis carries a small risk of miscarriage whereas a NIPT is risk free.

Because it looks at the baby's dna, it also can tell you the baby's gender.

I hope that helps - and I think some trusts do offer it on the nhs now but I suspect maybe they only offer it if you come back as high risk on the regular screens? Not sure! X

Lunabun · 26/08/2022 15:49

Oh and I think I should add that when I say an NIPT is more accurate than the regular screenings, I think the issue is that the regular screenings that the nhs uses have a higher rate of false positives. NIPT tests are nowhere near as bad for false positives, I believe. I don't know whether there's an issue with false negatives.

ancienthouse · 26/08/2022 15:49

@Margo34 it's a screening test for the three trisomies that the NHS nuchal test screens for. But it's more accurate because it takes fetal dna from your blood and screens that. Which is why it can also tell you the sex. But its main purpose is for genetic screening.

Tropicana1 · 26/08/2022 15:55

@BecksLouise ah yea later early scans seems to be more accurate date wise that the early early ones so maybe I will. Tempted to just put the scanner on myself at work but machine quality definitely won't be as good as the human ones so don't want to freak myself out 🤣

@Wouldloveanother have you been offered any anti-emetic medication from your gp for the nausea?

Margo34 · 26/08/2022 16:09

Thank you for clarifying @Lunabun @ancienthouse

Theowlwhowasafraid · 26/08/2022 16:11

Hi! Can I join please? I just got a positive test and baby is due around 28th April, but could be may I guess! 2nd baby, have an 11 month old DD so 2 under 2! I am a bit nervous as I had hyperemisis with my first and I really don’t want it again, have had a few queasy moments but can’t remember when it started last time.

how is everyone? I hope everyone is feeling well!

Lunabun · 26/08/2022 16:18

@Theowlwhowasafraid hi!!! I'm due on the 27th of April, so close to your date! I'm also going to have two under two, my son is currently nine months old 😬 I don't know much about hyperemisis tbh but I will keep my fingers crossed that you don't suffer with it this time round! X

Theowlwhowasafraid · 26/08/2022 16:19

Sorry just read the thread back and saw some of you are in anti sickness meds? For me cyclizine did sweet nothing last time, it actually seemed to make it worse. Odansetron is better but more expensive, I was prescribed that though after being in hospital on a drip due to the HG and it was amazing, I still threw up but it wasn’t as bad or as frequent. If cyclizine isn’t working it may be worth asking your GP for odansetron (I think they have to call your local maternity hospital though) but honestly it worked wonders for me x

Theowlwhowasafraid · 26/08/2022 16:21

@Lunabun yay almost due date twins! Congratulations! How are you feeling about the age gap? I freaked out a bit I must admit, we weren’t really trying and I had a big panic. But now it’s sort of sunk in I feel much better.

Lunabun · 26/08/2022 16:24

@Theowlwhowasafraid also freaked out. But we did try so have only ourselves to blame 🤣

No, I am mostly excited but yes it's definitely going to be full on. I'm mostly stressed about all the things I'm going to end up buying. Are you thinking about a double buggy? Or will you just try to make do with a single? X

Theowlwhowasafraid · 26/08/2022 16:35

I think we will have to get a double, as I don’t know how much walking my daughter will be doing haha she’s only just started crawling so I think I’d like the option for her to be in there too! What about you?

Lunabun · 26/08/2022 16:37

@Theowlwhowasafraid I'm slowly, reluctantly accepting that I will need to shell out for a double 😭 but still clinging onto the idea of having the new baby in a sling and my son can be in his normal buggy 😬

Theowlwhowasafraid · 26/08/2022 16:41

@Lunabun yup it’s all just an expense isn’t it! As well as another car seat, high chair, cot etc 😂😂

ancienthouse · 26/08/2022 16:42

@Lunabun @Theowlwhowasafraid I can't imagine having 2 under 2 you're both amazing! Mine will be a 4 year age gap and I'm still having a mild panic of what on earth have I done! DD wasn't the easiest toddler and I can count on one hand how many times she's slept through.

OttilieKnackered · 26/08/2022 16:52

@Theowlwhowasafraid i have tried cyclizine and also found it useless. DP is just out picking up a new one but I can’t remember what the GP said it was on the phone.

I am desperate for something that works. I am already exhausted with this nausea.

Theowlwhowasafraid · 26/08/2022 17:11

@ancienthouse aghhh don’t scare me haha I am on board with it now, I think my daughter is just at a lovely age at the moment so I was like arghhh why am I signing up for the newborn days again? But then the thought of sniffing their head and lovely milky breath and I’m like IM IN! haha

@OttilieKnackered I honestly feel your pain, it’s debilitating to feel sick constantly. Have you been sick a lot too? I had one also beginning with M but I can’t remember the name, it wasn’t much use either! The doctor in the hospital gave me one they used for vertigo and that was amazing but she could only give me a couple of weeks worth as it can have some side effects but odansetron was great! Have you got the sea sickness bands? It’s rubbish because often the normal remedies don’t work, if someone said to me to try ginger biscuits once more I was going to kill them!

Skylark1990 · 26/08/2022 17:28

@Theowlwhowasafraid welcome, how exciting you'll have two under two! Sorry to hear you were so sick. I hope it doesn't hit you the same way this time.

Argh the nausea is definitely getting worse in the evenings now. Feel like crying, just so emotional and sicky feeling. Definitely helps to lie down.... Wish I could do to bed at 6pm! 🤢🤢🤢🤢

Theowlwhowasafraid · 26/08/2022 17:39

@Skylark1990 im so sorry to hear about the nausea! It’s truly awful-first trimester is rubbish!

RabbitJungle · 26/08/2022 17:39

Ladies, what temp are you running your baths at? All I see online is advice not to have a 'hot' bath and instead aim for a 'warm' bath... but no guidance on what that means in practice😕

I haven't posted since I first joined but have been keeping an eye on the chat on and off. I'm 6+1 (or 6+3, depending on due date calculator 🤔), and the only symptoms I have are mildly sore boobs, some tiredness and irritability - can definitely relate to those of you saying you have been snapping at your OH 🙈 And I decided to book an early scan for 7+5 in the end.

Leanne053 · 26/08/2022 17:40

@RabbitJungle I was doing the same googling the other night, I figured you want nothing more than body temp around 37.5, I've ordered a bath thermometer from eBay for a couple of quid just to be doubly safe!

YellowTreeHouse · 26/08/2022 17:45

My daughter will be 2 years 4 months when baby is due so not quite 2 under 2 but similar 😅

I wanted a close age gap though, and I didn’t want to have to reset on the sleepless nights and nappy era all over again! She’s still waking every 2 hours at 20 months so at least the sleepless nights won’t be a total shocker this time around 😅
