@Ccatalina Labour snacks I've stashed are cereal bars and beef jerky. First time I had a small window before being induced I was 'allowed' to eat. First time in over 24 hours and all I could manage was a quarter of a wrap and a couple of m and ms.

DH not fully on board with the home birth. First he said either sounds good and it would be ideal for childcare. but after we talked to the midwife about it recently he was uncomfortable. He did find the first birth traumatic. In some ways more than me as I had gas and air and an epidural. It was short staffed and when it was just us in the room I tried to persuade him to have some gas and air (I have no memory of this) I have contemplated asking the hospital for a debrief from first birth as me and my husband remember some parts slightly differently. But it was over 4 years ago. Has anyone done this, and do you think it would be worth it in preparing for this birth?

Apparently they do birth plans at the 37 week appointment. First time round I remember I was preparing for this appointment by having some questions but I gave birth at 36+5. I guess there's a lot more flexibility and it's more safe. if you make it full term.

@greenerfingers I need to take a leaf out of your book with going against some medical advice. My heart is not set on a home birth, but it is set against staying postnatally (I stayed a week before, first baby had jaundice then I was mentally unwell). It was never an option to be discharged from labour as they disappeared for hours after birth until after handover when I was transferred to postnatal.

greenerfingers · 05/08/2022 21:46

Oh I feel you @Bramblecrumble21. In order to appease my consultant I told her I'd bring baby in an hour after delivery to have him monitored for infection. Biggest regret of my birth. I was physically battered after 22 hours labouring. Barely slept 45 mins and had the hospital ringing to bring him in. Of course I did. They said it was crucial he's monitored the first 10 hours post delivery. Well I sat (after that seriously long active labour) for 10 hours or so and wasn't seen once. In the end they just sent us home. What a waste of time and very much needed rest. I later found out other trusts say you can just check baby's temperature hourly and if alls ok then fine but if not go in. This time I'll be adding that information to my list.

If you're not set on a home birth and also don't want to stay postnatally look at your options. I didn't make any decisions irrationally, I really read so many papers on the unreliability of growth scans, many papers on the extremely unlikely nature that Strep B would pass to baby if it was positive in the mother months before. The consultant was actually taken aback at just how much I knew. So much so that she said she was happy for me to sign a disclaimer that reliability is mine and I'm going against medical advice and would then offer me the home birth and send out the midwives. I also asked all my doctor friends for their unbiased opinions and got private opinions too from obstetricians. I was set on a home birth due to trauma from a previous delivery (sadly a still birth).

Gosh such a long post!! I did go back in as my baby was jaundiced and had a great stay in all honesty- just delivering in hospitals makes me so panicky. If you feel you'd rather be sent home straight away perhaps ask for the midwifery led unit (if you have one), and then get yourself discharged providing all is well. If anything goes wrong (hopefully not) you can always just go back in. Mental health is so important especially the days after delivery when things are hard enough.

GeorgieEm · 06/08/2022 21:59

@greenerfingers I've been experiencing quite strong pressure under my boobs, usually as the day goes on. Guessing this is normal part of the process of everything stretching / growing etc .. however as it's my first I don't really know! x

greenerfingers · 07/08/2022 03:50

@GeorgieEm thank you for the reply. Sadly this isn't that sort of pain. It's such a distinct agonising pain only under one breast. I spoke to the midwife and she thinks perhaps my first pregnancy the muscle tore there and it's never healed. It's back again with a vengeance. Think she's right as after my first pregnancy if I laugh too suddenly or sneeze that one muscle spasms so badly.

Otterses · 07/08/2022 09:09

@Ccatalina I gave up swaddling DS1 within about …three hours and ordered a grobag thing to be delivered ☺️ He was much happier, absolutely hated being swaddled. Plus it saved me the fear of him wiggling free and ending up with a blanket over his face.

I won’t be bothering with a birth plan this time round, all my efforts went out the window with my first. I think being flexible is the best way with it, specifying what you’d like to avoid if at all possible. At least I know it’s a planned section this time - I’m more concerned about convincing them I’m good to go home as soon as possible than I am the birth plan 😁

sarahj878 · 07/08/2022 11:08

Just catching up with messages. @Otterses i was exactly the same with swaddling, love the sleeping bag things and have stocked up already as this baby due different season so needed different togs to what I had previously. I’m also having a section. Had one last time and still made a birth plan for the things I wanted that were important to me, music, delayed cord clamping, husband cutting cord etc.

Cocobeau · 09/08/2022 13:10

Hi Mums, hope you're all doing ok. I've been really enjoying the second trimester so far. Bump is right out there now and my DMIL keeps making comments about my weight, despite the fact I've put on 8lbs since pre-preg, which I don't think is bad. I'm looking forward to seeing her next time so I can happily tell her the midwife said my bump measurement was basically spot on.

I have started getting some pains from Coccyx and SPD/PGP so waiting for physio appointment but determined to keep as active as possible until I simply can no longer.

I've just bought a she-wee for a trip we are taking soon and seriously considering using it just for getting the urine samples now the appointments are increasing in frequency. How does anyone pee into that pot without getting it everywhere?!

Bubbano2 · 09/08/2022 15:40

@Cocobeau I literally have a small pyrex jug especially for my samples😂Wee in there and pour it in I had enough of getting it everywhere lol! Just keep it in downstairs bathroom cupboard so no mistaking it in the kitchen😅

CurlyNo2 · 09/08/2022 18:09

Hi everyone,

I hope everyone is ok. Gosh I feel like I’ve been steam rolled today, sheer exhaustion. I actually cried earlier because I was so tired. I have a 6 year old and I’ve taken a week off work to spend time with him and I’ve no energy at all. I feel horrendous guilt as it’s probably going to be the last time it’s just me and him so wanted to spend some quality time with him and I can just about climb the stairs.

Baby has been doing somersaults today, I’ve been having really down kicking with some mild discomfort and braxton hicks. I had these really early with my son.

We’ve also just started the process of buying a house (we’re first time buyers) and I already feel stressed out at the idea of moving either heavily pregnant or with a 6 year old and a newborn.

I met with my consultant last week and we’ve agreed on a c-section at 40+1 but if I go into labour beforehand, I’ll be on the consultant ward and try for a vaginal delivery. I had a very traumatic delivery that left my son with a birth injury for the first 18month of his life, so this caused a lot of distress as well and a brutal recovery.

Hope everyone is coping so far with this heat, I already have trotters!

StrongUsernameHere · 10/08/2022 09:43

Hi all, this is my first post on Mumsnet. I am due 19 November with my first baby, a girl.

I'm very excited! And mostly enjoying pregnancy, despite the nausea in the first trimester and now aches and pains. I went to my 25 week appointment yesterday and I wish I'd seen the other posts here saying you can get your Mat b form then – I didn't ask for it as in the blue folder it said I had to wait for my next appointment.

Anyway this midwife was much better than the appointments that were so rushed. She diagnosed me with SPD and I have a physio appointment today (they kept cancelling but now I've got an in-person one, yay). Just walking hurts all the time and I'm hobbling, which makes me feel rubbish.

I've bought a pregnancy pillow (XXL Niimo) and that has helped with sleeping the past two nights.

I feel baby move quite a bit but not had any Braxton Hicks. I have got colostrum leaks though! Which from googling seems quite unusual this early? It's only very little drops. They were clear until yesterday, when I got yellow. I forgot to mention it yesterday, but hoping this can only be a good thing!

Ccatalina · 10/08/2022 09:59

@StrongUsernameHere

Hello and welcome ☺️

also pregnant with my first, also a girl and due on the 18th of November !

I callled and requested my Matb1 before my next appointment and was able to go and collect it,worth an ask?!

I agree pregnancy pillows are a life saver! I was on the fence until joining this thread and advised to get one😊

I am on an app called pregnancy plus which gives you general updates on your pregnancy etc.. it mentioned colostrum leakage around this time so I shouldn't worry!
X

greenerfingers · 10/08/2022 11:21

Hello all, seems like we're all at the exhaustion stage. I'm so swollen too. I'm abroad and the heat is making me swell like a balloon although I hear the UK is baking too! Just glad I'm abroad till the heatwave calms over there as the constant air con and fans here are a life saver.

I need to dig my pregnancy pillow out of storage as all positions are now uncomfortable and my bump is ginormous. I look 9 months and walk and feel like it too! Glad to have hit viability though Smile

Beanniebaby22 · 10/08/2022 11:47

@StrongUsernameHere yes I have had some colostrum leakage from 23 weeks. Usually only after a warm shower. Currently on a breastfeeding zoom by my hospitals midwives and they said the colostrum is in your breasts from 16 weeks so leakage not that unusual 😊

I have my 25 week appointment tomorrow and will definitely need to get MATB1. My manager only mentioned to me yesterday that I’m nearly at the deadline for HR 🙄 I hadn’t a clue. Good of her to give me such short notice!

smiles39 · 10/08/2022 15:48

I’ve had colostrum leakage for a while now too, normally as you say after a warm shower. But weirdest thing happened yesterday, I got back from holiday and my cat was being especially needy… he was meowing incessantly for cuddles, and his crying made my boobs leak!! I had to Google it to check I wasn’t a freak. But apparently it is normal for domestic cats to mimic the cry of a baby to get your attention.

StrongUsernameHere · 10/08/2022 18:52

Thank you @Ccatalina and good to know @Beanniebaby22

OK I will call and try to get the MATB1 when I go in for my glucose test next week!

I'm a bit nervous about the GTT because most of the pregnant women I know (not many, tbf) were diagnosed with it – and they are much slimmer and healthier than me! I don't know what that says, really. But I'd like to stay low risk if possible.

I'm tired too – the SPD, the heat and the frequent toilet trips at night. I got some tips at the physio today: I now have to put my knees together when turning over in bed, and clench my bum while walking around, especially going up stairs.

My feet really hurt this week. I'm thinking of getting a pregnancy massage and foot massage at a local place I've been to before – does anyone here get them while pregnant?

ALittleBitofVitriol · 11/08/2022 01:19

I had my gtt yesterday (27 weeks today) and was pretty drained afterwards, but they took extra blood for some things that had been missed, which after fasting wasn't too fun!
Ob & midwife appointment next week where I assume I'll get the results. I'm not too worried, I've never had GD before and I've never been particularly slim, but I am nearly 40 this time around so who knows how my body is coping!

Bramblecrumble21 · 11/08/2022 06:30

@smiles39 after my first was born seagulls calling made my boobs leak! I don't think it's very specific. This was a reason the postnatal ward was horrible,. leaking constantly due to babies crying, and trying to be taught how to express colestrum with syringes, a student nurse was good at taking time but I just didn't get the hang of it. Baby was jaundice and I got very full when she was sleeping/having light therapy and after a bit one staff member gave me an electric pump to use. Gross warning:

Last pregnancy, near the beggining I had itchy nipple and I pulled one of my dogs hairs out of my nipple, it had got in a milk duct. Then it started leaking for a bit.

TFMinx · 11/08/2022 16:31

Well I don't know about anyone else, but I'm absolutely thrilled to be pregnant during the hottest summer in living memory 😩

I need a repeat prescription for iron tablets, however my GP is refusing to prescribe until they've spoken to my midwife...who's currently on leave. I think I've got it sorted now, but how annoying! The midwife I spoke to in day assessment was furious when I spoke to her about it, looking for advice.

Otterses · 11/08/2022 17:11

@TFMinx its horrific isn’t it 😩 ? I decided to head home early due to the heat but it appears the trains are melting (as well as all of us I suspect!)

General question - though probably should post in parenting - is anyone pregnant with their second, third etc. and having issues at all with their first born’s behaviour? DS is usually bordering angelic, but has been really acting out at nursery the past couple of weeks and being a bit aggressive. Not sure it’s coinciding with baby now being more obvious.

In more positive news it looks like I have a new role to go to after maternity leave ☺️ Just trying to work out the logistics of my transfer as I don’t want to risk my maternity pay and needing to repay anything. I can’t believe I’m done with work in three weeks time but 100% feeling ready to leave. How long is everyone else planning on hanging on for?

Dontbeaneejit · 11/08/2022 17:33

Funny you should mention that. Just literally finished listening to my eldest have a total meltdown. He's always been clingy with me but it's bordering on obsessive now. He cries for half an hour before he knows I'm leaving the house without him and just now had a total breakdown because I wouldnt drop everything and cuddle him immediately. Like screaming hysterical tantrum. I'm getting quite anxious about how he's going to react though he's really looking forward to it and talking about it all the time but I'm worried the reality will be different. Especially since he'll be having to go to school everyday. 😕 Time will tell I suppose but you're not alone!

VolcanicProtectorMan · 11/08/2022 20:17

@Otterses how old are they? My three year old’s behaviour is awful but it coincided with her turning 3, so I think it is that. However, I could be in for a rough ride when the baby is actually here too!

Also, I cannot cope with this heat, I am really struggling!

CurlyNo2 · 11/08/2022 20:40

Eurgh this heat is slowly killing me off!!

Baby is having a proper knees up low down tonight and jumping all over my bladder/cervix(?). That each jump makes my belly flip.

Has anybody started to think of any names? We already have a 6 year old son whose name we love but there just isn’t anything else out there that jumps out at us that we like. Poor babe is gonna be nameless when they’re born, I just know it.

Bramblecrumble21 · 11/08/2022 21:42

Curlynumber2. DH and I have just had a chat about names. There one or two one of us loves and the other hates. Then we have a list of over for each sex,. but none feel quite right. First born was easy to name.

No behaviour issues with my first, but she's 4 a d I do remember her going through a threenager stage.

A question about movements, especially for anyone who's had lots of pregnancies. Do you ever get quivering baby movements? Like there awake, I feel a shuffle and couple of kicks then quiver for 1-3 secondsish (though I haven't timed it). I remember rolls, kicks and hiccups with my first (no distinguished hiccups this time) but not these quivers. Had it maybe twice and I'm 27 weeks.

I've got 9 weeks till I'm off work (only just set the date). But two of those are annual leave (soon)

ALittleBitofVitriol · 11/08/2022 23:37

Aw, sorry to hear about struggles with older kids. Mine are all quite a bit older so no tantrum stage - just teenage drama (life hack: don't be pregnant with a teenage daughter). I'm trying to remember, but it’s not uncommon for the older ones to regress in behaviour and the disruption in routine is felt. I remember my oldest suddenly un-toilet trained for a bit after 2nd was born 😯

We've had his name picked for a while. 🥰 I woke up with a very lopsided belly this morning. Wriggly little one!

NotAdultingToday · 12/08/2022 22:46

Welcome @StrongUsernameHere would you like to be added to the due date list.

Im not sure i have said it enough I HATE THE HEAT! At least work has air con. And im using it as any excuse to eat all the ice cream 😁

Thats so weird my eldest is having epic melt downs at the moment but then being really clingy! Hes getting very angry and has hit and shoved me in the last couple of days which he has never done before (and wont do again i shut that one down quickly!)

I thought maybe it was a turning 5 thing as other than being on summer holidays not much else has changed but now i dont know.

I just keep telling him i love him and give him space to calm down (he didnt talk to me for the whole drive home the other day 40 minutes of peace 😂)
I should say when he calms down and i guess processes he apologies and tries to explain why he got so angry. Thats good i think?
