@laurenGame no don’t bin it. Once baby is out of the early months it will be fine (im
told) I’ve just read things online and my health visitors advised me to stop using it and I noticed a difference. It could be a fluke but don’t bin it. I kinda wish I didn’t even get it because I find using the kettle just as easy. Lol. More a waste of money I think.

aw that’s tough though. Are you using anti colic bottles ? Sometimes people change the bottles they use and that can help. I use the advanced anti colic bottles tommee Tippee but people swear by the dr browns and also mam bottles. Maybe try a bottle switch.
I also sit baby up for longer and burp at every ounce of feed she has. Maybe it’s an accumulation of all things that’s helped. X

I am glad I gave come back on to catch up..I was struggling I think week 6/7 were the worst for me. Louie is now almost 10 weeks and I feel like we have turned a corner and I am enjoying him more.

That being said I have asked my work if I can go back to work early as I am struggling not working, I feel like I need it just to feel a little more like me and not just mum. I am going back in October 3 days per week .

fpeg · 24/07/2022 09:24

@laurenGame could it be silent reflux? I've heard people talk about it and had baby omeprazole prescribed and has apparently been a complete game changer. Don't know much about it apart from that but thought I would mention it x

annie1994 · 24/07/2022 14:28

@laurenGame I know you’re not 100% sure what is causing your baby’s discomfort but incase any of this helps…

My eldest had colic and it was HARD. We formula fed him. We changed formula to Aptamil comfort, changed to MAM bottles, used infacol before each feed, lots of burping during feeds, sitting him upright for at least 15 mins after each feed and we gave probiotic in his milk each morning. Nothing got his colic completely away but all these did help. He grew out of it around 4 months I think it was!

DaimDillyDoo · 24/07/2022 21:06

@laurenGame We got prescribed baby gaviscon but it made her poo hard and she didn't go very often, so I didn't want her to get constipated so I've taken her off that and replaced it with Carobel.

She has omzoperzole (probably spelt wrong) and carobel to thicken her feed. I can't say I've noticed much difference to be honest. I'm now thinking she may be lactose intolerant. Babies who are poorly who have a course of antibiotics get it apparently! My baby was poorly from birth and had 7 days of antibiotics.

@GrowBabyGrow I haven't approached the GP yet but I think I need too.

DaimDillyDoo · 24/07/2022 21:07

@laurenGame what bottles do you use? Our baby prefers MAM bottles. If you aren't using them give them a try.

DM me if it's easier and you need someone to talk to. I dreaded the evenings as it meant crying all night and me getting stressed. It's passing slightly now.

laurenGame · 24/07/2022 22:24

Thank you- I've just ordered 2 MAM bottles. And brauer baby colic (it was in the suggested section so I'm trying everything).

I'm speaking with a GP soon he'll prob fob me off again. I wonder if I can just switch to colic/reflux formula or does the baby need to get diagnosed? So much formula choice in the shops I really don't know what to get him. We're using Bubs organic atm (Australia)

I went to get nappies yest evening for him and just sat in the car in the car park crying because I was dreading going back home.

@DaimDillyDoo how do I inbox people? I click on the icon to the right of your name but no such option there. X

Rolledthedice · 24/07/2022 23:05

So sorry to hear about people struggling. I can definitely still relate to the reflux/colic problems! I’m wondering how to tell the difference between silent reflux and wind. I feel like every week the symptoms change somewhat. I hope it improves soon, my LO is nearly 6 weeks old and constantly feeds but grizzles, back arches, coughs, honks, and cries out after feeding and won’t settle to lie flat. I also dread the evenings and post-feed during the day, here’s hoping we all get respite soon.

GrowBabyGrow · 25/07/2022 01:54

@DaimDillyDoo I hope you're able to get an appt soon. They should take it pretty seriously if you tell them it is because you think you have PND. I've been talking to my GP fairly regularly as my midwife wanted me to be monitored given how traumatic the birth was and I've had mental health issues in the past and I've found having someone who isn't family to talk to is really helpful. Do DM if you want to chat

MrsTwentyNine · 25/07/2022 02:55

@DaimDillyDoo @Prema112 thank you

And yes on the shaving legs! I cut myself in multiple places trying to shave quickly the other day 😩

@laurenGame me and DH are also doing shifts! 7pm till 1am today and I feel so good after that 6 hour sleep (albeit at the weirdest hours) Any form of uninterrupted sleep needs to be cherished at this point however.

We are 7 weeks now and things have gotten slightly better mentally for me I must say. Baby still feeding 2 hourly! Combi feeding here with breast first then formula but at times I wonder why I'm bothering as he gets so angry within 5-10mins at the breast!

annie1994 · 26/07/2022 13:42

@laurenGame I think the Aptamil comfort formula (for babies with colic and constipation) said you should discuss with health visitor or GP before using but I must admit we didn’t do that with DC1 and we just bought a tub from the supermarket and started him on it ourselves.

Heads up if you do use the comfort formula - it can make their poos dark green and pretty grim 😂

laurenGame · 26/07/2022 18:37

Thank you @annie1994 is it good consistency for flow? I've tried s26 reflux and it's so thick it get stuck in the bottle constantly !

GP recommended NAN comfort but I admit it's one of the cheapest formulas so I wonder if it'll be good. I have bought it and will start trying.
But I'll try aptamil as well, I have been looking at it in the shops.

unknownscot · 27/07/2022 07:09

Hi 👋🏽
Sorry I've been AWOL. My baby boy is 7 weeks tomorrow.

We had a tough start. I thought he was just lazy at feeding from me so we were toping up with expressed breast milk or formula. 3 weeks in I couldn't handle the triple feeding so we moved to formula only.

He had Reflux. Got put on omeprazole.
I asked the midwife, HV and GP about tongue tie but got told he didn't have one. I did a lot of reading into Reflux and decided at 5.5 weeks to get seen by a specialist.
He had tongue tie. It got cut there and then.

No improvement with his arched back / reflux plain so asked to trial new milk for suspected CMPA

He's like a new baby.

Please don't anyone suffer in silence. Your baby should be content not in pain after feeding.

Rolledthedice · 27/07/2022 09:06

@unknownscot it’s great to hear a positive story! 😊 What were his symptoms? I’m still trying to work out if mine has reflux or if it’s just wind. She now sticks her tongue out like she is trying to clear her throat after I bf, on top of arching back, grunting, honking, coughing and small spit-ups.

We are seeing a tongue tie specialist today and I’ve been prescribed baby Gaviscon but not sure if we‘ll use it as I don’t want her to be constipated. I just want the poor love to be comfortable after feeding.

GrowBabyGrow · 27/07/2022 09:41

Does anyone know if a baby can get CMPA from other milks or if it is a protein unique to cow milk? I don't have cow's milk but have eaten goat cheese and sheep cheese and baby does seem to have the bad wind/ reflux/ stuffy nose symptoms that can go with CMPA. Also getting her tongue tie snipped this week so that could help sort it, poor girl can't really move her tongue at all.

We've found infacol has definitely improved her wind, she does some really big burps now, although she is still sometimes really uncomfortable after a feed.

laurenGame · 27/07/2022 12:05

@unknownscot what's the new milk you are trialing ?

Mine is in pain when he's asleep , it wakes him up with crying. Poor thing he's tired and falls asleep fast but the grunting starts before long. 😓

annie1994 · 27/07/2022 13:56

@laurenGame I remember the comfort formula was slightly thicker and the box advised using a faster flow teat so we went from slow flow to medium flow - have you tried this? I imagine any formula specifically for reflux will be even thicker but I can’t say I know a lot about reflux as I’m sure my boy only had colic.

Its such trial and error at this age with what helps/ hinders their discomfort. I feel for you, it’s so hard!!

CMPA is cows milk protein allergy, not goat etc

unknownscot · 27/07/2022 19:06

@Rolledthedice
His symptoms included - arched back after feeding and for a long time afterwards. Poor /wouldn't feed from breast. Snoring/loud breathing. Mouth breathing. Dry skin. Reflux. Colic.

Many of these are tongue tie or CMPA symptoms.

In Scotland very few are actually trained to assess tongue ties 😩

unknownscot · 27/07/2022 19:09

@laurenGame
We've started off with Aptamil Pepti 1

Tbh you can buy it over the counter (££££) but if you don't get anywhere with medical staff you could do your own trial

Trial on Pepti 1 for 3 weeks then add one bottle of old milk back into daily routine, increasing the amount of old milk per day
So day 1 - 1 old milk bottle, 7 new milk
Day 2 - 2 old milk bottle, 6 new milk
Etc

If symptoms come back stop the old milk immediately

Rolledthedice · 27/07/2022 19:48

Thanks @unknownscot that’s useful to know!

For those who have had tongue tie cut, how much improvement (if any) did you see? Especially with regards back arching / inability to lie flat after feeding?

Just saw a consultant who diagnosed my daughter with class 3 posterior tongue tie. But I decided to go away and research before getting it snipped. My health visitor said recovery isn’t always quick.

unknownscot · 27/07/2022 20:52

@Rolledthedice
In my opinion 100% get it cut - it can affect SO much more than just feeding inc speech etc

laurenGame · 28/07/2022 11:56

Thank you @unknownscot that's helpful. I've researched that formula now.

My little boy seems calmer now, he is 4 weeks. I have been told by a health nurse that vacuum delivery can traumatise babies so maybe that's why he's had a rough start.
He still wakes up almost hourly but at least it's not a battle to then rock him for hours around the room. I feed him and put him back in his bassinet and he goes back to sleep. It's made a massive difference to my well-being and overall happiness. I feel like I can actually sleep a bit.

In other positive news, I drove 40 mins with the bub on my own to visit a HV (they don't visit you routinely in Aus!) ☹️ and I have qualified for HV visitors to my home for the next year! Also they've provided me with free psychologist sessions. And signed me up to a local mums group.

I'm so glad I braved that 40 min drive with the baby. Feel like I have proper support now. 💓

beansprout55 · 28/07/2022 12:20

Made my day reading that @laurenGame !!
So happy things are looking a bit brighter for you xx

Clomid1 · 28/07/2022 22:49

@Rolledthedice I have seen no difference 😔. It’s been over a week now as well. My daughters tongue tie had a score of 17/24 so it wasn’t actually that bad. My main reason for getting it done was to breastfeed but my daughter still does not latch at all 😔. I was hoping even if it didn’t sort the breastfeeding issue out it would help with the issues due to bottle feeding but it didn’t help with that either.

I was told by the infant feeding team that there is not enough evidence to say it affects speech. They said that the only reason I am being recommended it is because I want to breastfeed. I am tongue tied but you would have no idea if you heard me speak.

If you do get it done my daughter fed really poorly on the day of the division but was fine the next day. As she’d ingested blood there was blood in her poo so if you do get it done don’t be alarmed by black dots in their poo.
