I like:
Thomas
George
Toby

but dh doesn't

Dh likes:
Cassius
Montgomery
Edmund
Rupert
all of which I think are ridiculous and will lead to ds2 being laughed at in the playground

Names we both vaguely think are OK, but are very much a compromise:
Douglas
Fergus
Edward
Dominic

Names we both like but cannot have because they are taken by famiy members or clash with our surname:
Freddie
Henry
William
James
Christian/Christopher
Sebastian
Matthew
Hugh
David

There must be some good, ordinary names we are missing? I don't like anything too biblical or popular (Zach, Oliver, Oscar, Archie, Jake, etc are not my cup of tea).

Also cannot be Robin for complicated reasons, even though this is the only name acceptable to MIL.

has to be monty

Blu · 03/01/2008 12:18

Finlo
Finn
Luca
Louis
Arlo
Simon
Henry
Timothy

Egg · 03/01/2008 12:21

I think Monty is great, but like pufferbear I also think of pervy Uncle Monty in Withnail, and it puts me off.

tangent · 03/01/2008 12:21

Don't go for the compromise names. I've got one of those and it's shit. Apparently my parents hated each other's suggestions and mine was the only one they were indifferent about. Don't do it!

NewYearNewCatkin · 03/01/2008 12:30

I let my DH name our son and he chose 3 names for him.
Our DS couldn't be anything else now - the names suit him so much and DH was proud to name him.
Saying that, If he'd chosen something really horrid I think I would've vetoed it!

robin3 · 03/01/2008 12:33

Not a fan of Edwin but huge fan of Edward and all his abbreviations...Ed, Eddie, Teddie, Ted.

I loved the name Robin but wasn't allowed it as it is the name of an ex, hence my choice of mn name!

I think you should imagine how you'd feel to date that name i.e. make sure your son gets a name that sounds manly and fun...so IMO (gonna get shot down here)

Matt
Tom
Dan
Joe

carmenelectra · 03/01/2008 12:42

Louis was another name i thought of after id named ds! really like it.

Lucas is ds middle name. I am very much liking Luca too!

Pollyanna · 03/01/2008 12:44

Charles or Henry go really well with William I think.

I am pg and my list is:

Freddie ( I know you can't have this)
Barnaby
Nathaniel
Hugo
Max
Jesse
Finn
Jonny
Sebastian
Arthur
Benjamin

My dh doesn't like any of these names though! He wants Tom or Will or Joe.

Heated · 03/01/2008 12:52

Love George!

How about:
Stanley
Albert (Albie)
Arthur
Frank
Henry
Jonas
Patrick
Hugo
Gideon
Cosmo
Vincent
Titus
Rufus
Angus
Ed ward
Fergus
Jonty
....

MuffinMclay · 03/01/2008 20:10

Sorry, been away all day so have only just got round to reading suggestions.

Freddie is our dog's name. I did toy with the idea of renaming him, but I guess that wouldn't be fair.

Hugh could be an option. The trouble is that it is my useless brother's name (but spelt Huw) and he is hardly a role model (although my mother would of course disagree).
Perhaps Hugo as an alternative would be OK.

Mulling over Cameron. That was on our shortlist for ds1, but I'd forgotten about it.

Can't have Henry (or Harry) - that is ds1's middle name.

Charles is Ok (hate Charlie), but then I feel like a royal family groupie.

This is too hard.

at how many people like Monty. Actually, I think Monty is OK, but not Montgomery. I don't think I've ever seen Withnail and I, so wasn't aware of

OP posts:
MuffinMclay · 03/01/2008 20:11

sorry, post went haywire

...wasn't aware of pervy uncles called Monty, nor was dh.

OP posts:
Coby · 03/01/2008 21:12

Monty can also be Montague if that is any better than Montgomery for you or just stick to Monty.

sambrads · 04/01/2008 08:24

hi ya my ds son is called bradley and i love it!!!

i am really picky about names and dont have too many to chose from .

a boy would be called dylan
max
bailey
alex

a girl would be called kirsten or
brooke
hope this helps!!!

Mumblesmummy · 04/01/2008 10:44

What about Adam.

Dominic's nice. Jacob is too.

Though I think when you've got the name, you just know it, so you perhaps havn't come across it yet.

MuffinMclay · 04/01/2008 12:46

Thank you all.

Sambrads - sorry, those names really aren't my cup of tea. No offence intended.

Mumblesmummy - Dominic is OK. Love Adam, but wouldn't go with surname at all. Don't like Jacob, and there are far too many round here.

Think you're right about 'just knowing' when a name fits. Haven't got there yet.

Pondering Bruno this morning....

Muffin, you have my sympathies! We had a girl's name all picked out but could not find a boy's name we both liked.

In the end ds was born and instantly we both knew he was Patrick! A name that had been on our list but neither of us for some reason were overly keen on!

Maybe keep a shortlist of two of your favourites & two of your dh's and then wait until he is born.

Mumblesmummy · 04/01/2008 13:23

Ooo sorry to chip in again but I've just thought of a name you (or your DH) might like. Neville (sp?) it's quite out of the ordinary, but sophisticated like your other choices.

Hope you find something in the end. We went on name sites and the pampers baby name mixer to get ours.

scorpio1 · 04/01/2008 13:24

Dexter?

Mumblesmummy · 04/01/2008 13:26

oh and Nial/ Nials and addison. Elliott? Ellis? Gerard? Sorry, getting carried away... I just know how hard it is when all you want to hear is that name that makes you go 'yep, that's it!!'

rosmerta · 04/01/2008 13:32

Elijah/Eli?

rosmerta · 04/01/2008 13:32

Mind you, that's quite religious isn't it?

Sorry, ignore me!

MuffinMclay · 04/01/2008 13:59

Sorry, really don't like Neville, Dexter, Elijah, Elliott at all.

Niall is OK. Would never have thought of that.

I'm worried that if I leave it until after the birth that my sleep-deprived brain will make some stupid choices. I'd probably agree to any name dh likes then if he offered to take care of dcs whilst I had some sleep.

LoveAndSqualor · 04/01/2008 14:19

When our boy finally pitches up in March, he'll either be a Kit or a Jem, depending on what he looks like. I like them because they're short, simple and neither ubiquitous nor outre ...

rosmerta · 04/01/2008 19:02

Fair enough Muffin! Want any more suggestions?

My latest ideas are Peter, Finn, Noah and Alex!

Coby · 04/01/2008 19:57

Hasn't been mentioned so far from what I have read..Marshall?

There were twins at DDs nursery who were Max and Mitchell.
