Boys names - dh and I can't agree on any.

I like:
Thomas
George
Toby

but dh doesn't

Dh likes:
Cassius
Montgomery
Edmund
Rupert
all of which I think are ridiculous and will lead to ds2 being laughed at in the playground

Names we both vaguely think are OK, but are very much a compromise:
Douglas
Fergus
Edward
Dominic

Names we both like but cannot have because they are taken by famiy members or clash with our surname:
Freddie
Henry
William
James
Christian/Christopher
Sebastian
Matthew
Hugh
David

There must be some good, ordinary names we are missing? I don't like anything too biblical or popular (Zach, Oliver, Oscar, Archie, Jake, etc are not my cup of tea).

Also cannot be Robin for complicated reasons, even though this is the only name acceptable to MIL.

Monty is a great name

tangent · 02/01/2008 23:59

Solomon, Sol, Solly?

puffybear · 03/01/2008 00:01

Hmm, Edmund is definitely Blackadder and Monty makes me think of pervy old Uncle Monty in Withnail and I.

What about Linus or Milo? (Ok, I know people are bound to mention Charlie Brown and Tweenies now...!)

MeMySonAndI · 03/01/2008 00:02

Tristan

Whatever but Rupert

MAMAZONtopofKILTbeingrude · 03/01/2008 00:12

i have a George so think that is fab.

i really like Seth, Stanley and Arthur.

but then im just wierd according to my family lol

TurkeyLurkey · 03/01/2008 00:14

Louis?

You have to do the "playground" test as others have mentioned with whatever you pick.

Imagine calling it out a few times in the middle of a crowded playground and see how comfortable you feel!

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 03/01/2008 00:17

Not previously mentioned that I can see...

Philip
Bertie
Jonathan
Stuart

hunkermunker · 03/01/2008 00:18

Whatever you choose, do the play, love promote test on it.

So does it work in these sentences:

Can X come out to play?

I love you, X.

Yes, I think we'll give X the promotion.

There are some names that just sound absurd on a child and vice versa on an adult. I think girls can get away with more unusual names, but boys - well, you have to be a certain sort of boy to wear an unusual name well, I think. Otherwise you just end up getting your head kicked in in the playground.

MAMAZONtopofKILTbeingrude · 03/01/2008 00:20

i went to school with an enormous guy who was very macho indeed but his name was Lyndsey.

oh dear did he get a lot of stick for it.

Niecie · 03/01/2008 00:25

You've covered the names of both my two boys (Christian, Matthew and Jacob(Jake)) The only one you are missing is Adam!

I liked Benedict a lot but DH doesn't much like Ben it got rejected although he has had second thoughts since but of course it is too late.

We also had on our list

Cameron
Issac/Zac
Jude
Luke
Conrad
Nathaniel
Kieran
Callum
Alexander

I like Gabriel as well but DH doesn't

hunkermunker · 03/01/2008 00:34

I used to have a boss whose middle name was Tracy (with an E? Oh, who cares!). He was a landlord and refused to have his full name above the pub door as licensee - wonder why?!

Coby · 03/01/2008 09:41

'Big bad rapper' Ice T's first name is Tracy - his surname is Marrow

mitfordsisters · 03/01/2008 09:42

Theodore
Bruno
Arthur
Hector
Max
Humphrey
Robert
Charles
Henry
Boniface (only joking)

Clary · 03/01/2008 09:58

Cassius and Rupert a bit poncey imo (sorry to any mums).
Edmund and Montgomery (shortened to Monty) are OK - we know a Monty and Edmund could be Edward (Eddie, Ed etc)

I like George and Toby. Thomas very popular, if that bothers you.

How about Finn, Miles, Angus, Fraser, Oscar? All a bit unusual but not too out there. Max is a nice short name if you have a long surname (oooh easy to write too). Alfred, Albert, Stanley, Sidney, Gabriel are all ones I liked (but DH didn't).

Meeley love yr twins' names!

MuffinMclay · 03/01/2008 10:30

What a lot of food for thought.

I'm so surprised that there is some support for Edmund (dh's first choice name). I don't dislike it as such, but it is a bit 'Blackadder'. Dh regards that as a good thing as long as one doesn't remember the blithering idiot in the first series.

I don't like Edwin, but don't know why.

Hadn't really considered Richard, but do like it. Ds likes it too, but I wonder if having brothers called William and Richard, which can be shortened to Willie and Dick, is asking for trouble. DS1 is William, and his cousins already call him Williekins. I hate Rick as a name (dh shared a house with
a total idiot called that when we first met).

I like Samuel, but all the ones I've known have been a bit odd, which puts me off.

I like Nicholas but that was the name of a disastrous two-timing boyfriend.

Names beginning with A don't work with surname. The child's name would sound like a firm of accountants.

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 03/01/2008 11:29

I spotted Freddie on your list as it's already a family name. If Edmund is shortened to Eddie, you'll have rhyming boys. Are the boys close enough for that to matter?

carmenelectra · 03/01/2008 11:38

Muffin,
i agree with what you said about dh's choice. You do have to be careful with a boy as as another poster said you may be likely to get battered at school. Rupert is a bit like that. OUT of his list id say Cassius the best and Toby from yours. Like George too, its my nephews middle name.

Boys names are incredibly difficult. I loved Gabriel but DP said no way as it would be shortened to gay, wheras i thought it may be shortened to Gabe(lovely.
Loved Jude too and i always said id have that but what put me off was the thought that people would jhave thought i was naming him after Jude Law (you know the way we had a lot of Kylie's etc) which i thought would be really naff. Wouldnt mind but Jude Law isnt even his real name.

My Dp liked Jacob which i do too, but dont really like jake which it would end up being.

Had about ten million girls names lined up if course.

GreenGlassGoblin · 03/01/2008 11:45

the baby name wizard (great book!) suggests Hugh and Guy as alternatives to some of the names on your DH's list. Love Benedict (was number 2 choice for DS, and often wish we'd gone with it)

GreenGlassGoblin · 03/01/2008 11:46

Tobias (as the long form of Toby)?

Alishanty · 03/01/2008 11:54

I like Dominic

It's probably too biblical for you but my ds is called Solomon (Sol or Solly) for short, he actually carries it off aswell, he couldn't have been anything else!

Monty isn't bad or what about Ewan as someone else suggested?

FriedGreenTomatoes · 03/01/2008 12:01

Ranulph?
Lysander?

jingleboo · 03/01/2008 12:07

Dylan?

Egg · 03/01/2008 12:13

DS is Benjamin. We think it is fab.

tangent · 03/01/2008 12:16

Sol doesn't need to be biblical. DS is just Sol, meaning the sun.
I have nephews Forbes and Innes which are a bit different.

Carnival · 03/01/2008 12:16

Our boy name was Christopher.

George Edmund (Surname)

Cameron?

Chester?

Lucas?

But, I really like your DH's Monty. Sorry!
