I like:
Thomas
George
Toby

but dh doesn't

Dh likes:
Cassius
Montgomery
Edmund
Rupert
all of which I think are ridiculous and will lead to ds2 being laughed at in the playground

Names we both vaguely think are OK, but are very much a compromise:
Douglas
Fergus
Edward
Dominic

Names we both like but cannot have because they are taken by famiy members or clash with our surname:
Freddie
Henry
William
James
Christian/Christopher
Sebastian
Matthew
Hugh
David

There must be some good, ordinary names we are missing? I don't like anything too biblical or popular (Zach, Oliver, Oscar, Archie, Jake, etc are not my cup of tea).

Also cannot be Robin for complicated reasons, even though this is the only name acceptable to MIL.

Happy new year Berolina! Do you still have your eardrums intact or have you been deafened by the Silvester fireworks?!

Yes I'm coming round to Montgomery actually. How about Cecil, Leonard, Hugo? Might be more your dh's kind of name. Charles?

fortyplus · 02/01/2008 21:43

I know a boy from a frightfully classy family whose name is Miles.

But I guess it could get the mickey taken... miles further, etc.

Trying to think of ones similar to your 'can't have' list:

Harry
Charles/Charlie
Ian
Nick/Nicholas
Tony/Anthony

berolina · 02/01/2008 21:43

We were OK here actually - dses slept right through it

berolina · 02/01/2008 21:43

oh, gesundes neues!

Top 100 boys' names

fortyplus · 02/01/2008 21:46

Spencer and Gabriel are near the bottom - are they unusual enough for your dh?

LynetteScavo · 02/01/2008 21:46

Miles is no longer classy around here. Since mynfirend named her son Miles - ha ha (hope she's not on MN tonight!) I did a double take in A&E when a really chav chavster bloke was with a small child called Miles.

Benedict?

SSSandy2 · 02/01/2008 21:48

Benedict might suit, Nicholas is good too.

ingles2 · 02/01/2008 21:48

Samuel?
William?

Washersaurus · 02/01/2008 21:48

William?

fortyplus · 02/01/2008 21:50

Shame about Miles...

Apparently it's always been the same - the 'upper crust' adopt a name, it increases in popularity until all the proles are loving it, by which time the aristocracy won't use it any more and have moved on to something else.

ingles2 · 02/01/2008 21:53

Ooohhh great minds think alike Washersaurus

Washersaurus · 02/01/2008 21:57

That was so weird Ingles - I nearly typed William and Samuel in the same post

Hatrick, I take it you don't watch "Waterloo Road"

coby · 02/01/2008 22:22

What about Nathan?

Montgomery is quite nice and will be put on a our shortlist when I get round to writing it..Monty is cute. Reminds me of Monty Don (although he is actually a Montague) down to earth and fun but with a little bit of a wild streak .

chunkypudding · 02/01/2008 22:23

am i the only person who thinks of Blackadder when i hear 'Edmund'???

sorry

What about Nat / Nathaniel?

coby · 02/01/2008 22:28

chunky - thats the first thing I thought of with Edmund too, doubt it would be a problem for the DS though - they haven't repeated it for ages now have they ?

Orchide · 02/01/2008 22:32

Gabriel is lovely- high on our list for imaginary
baby no. 2

MrsJohnCusack · 02/01/2008 22:33

hatrick - wow, a boy! how very exciting

chunkypudding · 02/01/2008 22:33

they do on cable... prob not a big deal for lots of people, its just a bit of a classic for me! sad probably

at least its not bernard, that was 'nursey's real name

my boy is due tomorrow so I really do sympathise with the name thing... have you got any closer to an agreement?

ivykaty44 · 02/01/2008 22:41

Mark

It is original, but not popular and easy to spell - as in not really many variations.

Or Rohan

threestars · 02/01/2008 23:50

Choose a name you won't be embarrassed to call out in the middle of a supermarket or public park at the top of your voice. Because you'll be doing that alot...
