@ALHCTPS oh wow okay! That was one of the reasons I thought not to because of size, so if they take you up to two years I’m definitley investing!! :) thanks!!

Also this is very TMI but has anyone else had a bad run in with thrush? I thought it was normal and haven’t asked the doctors for help, but I called before Christmas (dr doesn’t seem to think it’s thrush so I have no idea), sent off for a swab before Christmas and it came back that I didn’t label correctly (I did but…), having to wait this long until I can do anything is literally a pain. 😤 I’m tempted to just buy canestan and get on with it.

3yearstrying · 05/01/2022 10:55

@Unarosaes yes i feel little one all the time! Im 18+1. Started 16 weeks exactly like gas bubbles and flutters, now i can feel them doing all sorts in there having a great time. Such a strange sensation!

TTCjourney2021 · 05/01/2022 11:03

Great nappy advice here: thanks! I'm definitely up for trying it. Is drying then an issue? I've read many don't go in a tumble dryer. Anyone get any experience to share, or types that are easier to manage laundry-wise?
I was wondering about a two part system as maybe the liners are more tumble-dryable...

InvisibleDragon · 05/01/2022 11:26

@MrsNT my husband has one of these plastic teapots! Safe to say the top thing on his list when we move to our own flat is adding a hose function to the toilet!

RoseValleyRambles · 05/01/2022 11:28

Ooh, looks like the Bambino ones tumble on a low setting... They look good!

PeeAche · 05/01/2022 11:28

Just catching up on all the reusable talk. I have my eye on a couple of bundles on eBay for the nappies. Plan on using disposables for a week or so until the meconium is all out / I have had a bit of time to acclimate to being a mother and then phasing in resuables.

I'm aghast at the price of wipes. I am making my own. I'm going to use a solution of water, baby oil and baby soap (shampoo) and buy 4 big tubs / Tupperware style boxes on Amazon. I already have all the cloth I need, I'm a dab hand at sewing and I have waterproof bags galore knocking about.

I will supplement with "eco friendly" disposable wipes for desperate times.

ALHCTPS · 05/01/2022 11:37

@RoseValleyRambles - I was concerned about drying too, but the qualities that make them absorbent actually help them dry pretty quickly. We don't have a tumble dryer and i thought it would all go wrong come winter, but you pull the insert bit out when you wash them and they dry in an hour or so. Sooner on the radiators. That said, i ended up buying more nappies in stages (to soften the financial blow) so i could get away with doing a nappy wash once a week. Still occassionally failed to keep on top of things and would fall back on disposables occassionally.

@PeeAche - I promise you, you only need a flannel and water. Anything more extreme, where a flannel and water won't do, and you're better off dumping them in the bath. Oils and even mild detergents are best avoided. Though I did use food grade almond oil for baby massage every now and then, but not as a regular thing. They even recommend you only wash babies in water without soap, as their skin is so very sensitive. Once food enters the equation and you're washing mush out of their hair etc, that's when gentle shampoo etc comes into play. A lot of babies have eczema too, though most grow out of it, so the gentler you can be the better. Children don't really get BO like we hormonal adults do.

RoseValleyRambles · 05/01/2022 11:43

@alhctps great advice, thank you. Was looking at cheeky wipes but sounds like a cheaper option would be just as good so I will join @peeache in improvising a homemade solution :)

ALHCTPS · 05/01/2022 11:46

@RoseValleyRambles and @PeeAche - you can totally make your own. I'm just too lazy to. There is absolutely nothing about the Cheeky Wipes set up you can't replicate with some cut up towels and tupperware.

ALHCTPS · 05/01/2022 11:53

When out and about, just take a few damp cloth wet wipes in a wet bag, and shove them in another wet bag along with the dirty nappy when used. Or, alternatively, take them dry and wet them as you need from a water bottle. Bloody good for wiping hands and faces too. One and you're done - with disposable wet wipes you end up using half a dozen as they come out in a clump and often leave a greasy residue. Be warned, though: if the cloth wet wipes sit around in water or damp for too long, they start to smell a bit musty (you can use a bit of baby-safe essential oil in the water to make them smell nice), so i tended to have about ten or so at any one time sitting damp in the tupperware box of clean ones and then had a stack of dry ones alongside and topped up as needed.

And, if you don't have one already, those little frames with multiple pegs hanging off them are a godsend for drying all those little flannel squares. Frankly, they're brilliant for tiny baby clothes full stop. Baby socks are the devil!

Unarosaes · 05/01/2022 12:01

@czycoup yes it's my first one and I am completely clueless as to what to expect!

@jennixxx @3yearstrying it's so exciting to feel anything, isn't it? I almost don't care if I'm mistaking gas with baby J 😅

rathernotshare · 05/01/2022 12:17

I got a right kick yesterday 😍 I've not really had any movements that I've been sure of but this was a whacking great thump!

PeeAche · 05/01/2022 12:22

Thanks for all the tips @ALHCTPS !

I had read that the baby soap and baby oil combo (a teaspoon of each in the water) prevents the musty smell as well as essential oils but is cheaper and kinder on their skin.

I plan on pre-soaking my wipes rather than having a spray bottle on hand. I feel like this will be simpler when trying to do everything with one hand, on 2 hours of sleep. 😂

But the beauty of this homemade, reusable regimen is that you can experiment, right?

Hey, ALHCTPS do you recommend having a napisan or similar type solution in the dirty box or just chuck them in dry?

I thought that I would prefer 2 x starter kits of cheeky wipes so that I can keep a set upstairs and down. So I'd be looking at about £100 to get going and it seems too much when I have everything I need already lying around.

BUT! For anyone committed to the idea of reusable wipes who wants Cheeky Wipes, is also wincing at the cost and doesn't mind second hand, there is a staggeringly well equipped bundle on eBay right now. I'll share it with you all, since I've decided I won't be buying it myself. 😂

Use Gixen sniping service to set a limit on the item and get the best possible price. It's a free service.

ALHCTPS · 05/01/2022 12:31

@PeeAche - Chuck them in the sealable bucket as is. I was expecting to have to dial them in a tub of napisan, as I remember my mother doing that (she disapproved of these new-fangled ‘American’ disposables and folded massive squares of terry cloth and secured them with those scary nappy safety pins!). Purely milk-fed poo is pretty soluble so you don’t have to soak. Any staining, just hang them outside on bright sunshine for a day (seasons allowing). Where it gets more challenging is when you start weaning and introducing solids, as then you get solids at the other end too. Sorry for the tmi, but ideally said solids are firm enough that you can just shake them off into the loo, leaving only a smear on the nappy you put in the sealable bin. It sounds a bit grim, but by then you can deal with all sorts of horrors, trust me, and the milk-fed poo feels like a walk in the park.

ALHCTPS · 05/01/2022 12:31

@PeeAche and a set upstairs and downstairs is an extremely good idea.

ALHCTPS · 05/01/2022 12:36

Oh, I tended to do a quick rinse wash first before a longer hot wash when washing the nappies.

jun2022 · 05/01/2022 12:42

@pregnancydiaries

Thanks *@MrsNT* ♥️

Is there anyone on here who hasn’t been boosted that’s had COVID? How were your symptoms?

And please don’t come at me about getting the booster 😂 xxx

I haven't been boosted and tested positive, everyone in the house has it. It's more just like a cold right now, tired, achy and really sore head and all blocked up!
Olive60 · 05/01/2022 12:46

Thank you for the tag in the new thread. Always exciting when a new one starts!

@unknownscot oh my goodness the itchiness of my boobs!! Honestly I just walk around constantly rubbing them now. So so itchy!

Coffeepants · 05/01/2022 12:59

Hello, almost halfway am 18 weeks. Inklings that it’s a boy (had a private scan done in South Africa) but I don’t want to know the gender as I have one of each already.

Anyone researched next to me cribs? Looking for something compact that I can use till at least a year.

Apricotcolouredmoon · 05/01/2022 13:10

Hi Everyone! Just joining, have been lurking for a bit. I’m due on 17th June with my second and are keeping the gender a surprise. We used clothe nappies, mixture of bambino mio and tots bots as well as cheeky wipes with our first and planning on doing the same for this one. We got quite a few of the clothe nappies from Aldi when they were doing their baby events which were quite a good deal, not sure if they still do them, worth having a look next time they have a baby event!

Annabell1 · 05/01/2022 13:10

Thanks for starting the new thread.
Hope everyone had a lovely break.
Now that 2022 is here, it doesn't feel like we have that much time left. 😄
I finally read our maternity policy yesterday, looks better than expected.
Although, I would like to stay home for 12 months, I'm not exactly sure that's feasible.
So I'm thinking of taking 9 months off.

To those of you, who already have a child. How long did you stay at home and how did you manage in terms of sleep? I will be 37 when the baby arrives.

@EarlGreywithLemon Thanks for the list. That's really helpful.

I'm also thinking about using reusable nappies or maybe a combo.
One of my friends is using wool nappies and covers that only need to be washed and waxed every 6 weeks or so. The liner obviously needs frequent washing. They are not cheap but hold quite well and are really pretty.

Turniptracker · 05/01/2022 13:18

This reusable nappy convo has been super helpful, thank you so much ladies for sharing all your insights! As first time parents we haven't a clue how they work but I'm trying to convince dh to try and be a bit greener if we can.
I don't have itchy boobs (I'm not convinced they are doing anything tbh!) But my BACK is driving me crazy, right where I can't reach as well.
Are any FTMs showing yet? I was quite horrified how much my belly is sticking out now. I can't hide it very easily anymore!!
