@Sarah239 I also stopped shortly after 12 weeks but I take vitamin D supplements and make sure I have plenty of Vit C and iron in diet xx

@YfenniChristie getting up early for work after a sleepless night is the real killer. Grateful I can have a lazy day today at least

MissM94 · 08/01/2022 11:57

Google panicking has suppressed my worries luckily. Can't see anything online about it being linked to tongue tie so I can relax but I'll definitely be mentioning to my midwife when I see her next month

Sorry @MissM94 I didn’t want you to worry, for what it’s worth I think it’s better to continue taking vitamins that have folic acid in than nothing at all. My booking in midwife was lovely but a bit odd, she did have lots of opinions to share! All well meant though.

Bubbasmama2017 · 08/01/2022 12:40

@TashieWoo thanks I've had a sore throat and generally more tired but could just be because I'm pregnant and trying to entertain a 4 year old as well hehe. I've been really upset about catching it but can't change it now and not sure where I caught it.

Honeymint · 08/01/2022 13:45
@Sarah239 at my booking in appointment the midwife said I should stop taking folic acid after 12 weeks when the spine was formed as it can increase chance of tongue tie, so I just take Floradix, vit D and C now. Obviously I’m not telling you to stop pregnancy vitamins but just passing that on, I think you’re fine with skipping a day x
My midwife also brought up the folic acid / tongue tie thing! I stopped taking folic acid at 14 weeks after she said it, but then couldn’t find any more information about it so now I’m on pregnacare gummies.

All of the conflicting information is so confusing - I’ve even had different midwives, nurses and sonographers give me conflicting advice. It’s enough to make your head spin!

aNewYorkerInLondon · 08/01/2022 14:40

Oh gosh. I got nervous reading the above. This made me feel better:

MissM94 · 08/01/2022 15:03

@TashieWoo oh don't you be sorry! ☺️ Just had a little panic that I've potentially harmed him haha not your fault, you're only passing on what you've been told but I think it's really unfair for medical professionals to pass on information or opinions that aren't 100%

Sarah239 · 08/01/2022 17:13

Thanks everyone, yeah I heard about the tongue tie thing too but I decided on balance to keep taking the same supplement. We will deal with tongue tie if/when it happens! Almost every person I know has had tongue tie so I'm half expecting it 🤷‍♀️

Yellowbelly12 · 08/01/2022 18:05

@TashieWoo that’s interesting you were told that about tongue tie, I was told about the potential link to folic acid after my little boy was born with a very obvious tongue tie so this time I’ve not taken folic acid after 12 weeks.

I feel that the tongue tie was one of the things that impacted on our ability to successfully breastfeed as he would latch well but then slide off the latch resulting in bleeding nipples and a lot of pain for me and him being hungry so having to increasingly use formula.

All this conflicting advice is so difficult as we all want to do the best for our babies! And if they are born with a tongue tie it is easily resolved. We paid privately as the NHS weren’t helpful and now you wouldn’t know it had ever been there.

aNewYorkerInLondon · 08/01/2022 18:30

@Yellowbelly12, how did you find the best place to go private?

Kittycaz · 08/01/2022 18:31

Hey everyone, I'm quite new to mumsnet. I'm due 8th May with my first child. I'm having a little boy who is at present moving just below my ribs. Am very excited as my bump gets bigger and more noticeable.

Yellowbelly12 · 08/01/2022 18:44

@aNewYorkerInLondon my friend said she had gone private and I used Google! We went to a spire hospital close to us (we are close to Nottingham) and they listed the consultants that undertake tongue tie snips and we chose one and then had a consultation. They then snipped the tongue tie a week later, our little boy was about 6 weeks old. I breastfed him straight after and he was absolutely fine, we even went out for lunch after as he fell asleep!

aNewYorkerInLondon · 08/01/2022 19:32

@Yellowbelly12, thanks! My best friend back in the US had to do the same for her son. I just want to have some idea of how to go if it turns out we need that bum very keen to give exclusive breast feeding a good effort, understanding it's not always possible, and just want to have some resources for tongue-tie on hand if needed.

Yellowbelly12 · 08/01/2022 19:50

@aNewYorkerInLondon we were always on a difficult path with breastfeeding as my little boy was put on antibiotics when he was born as he had suspected sepsis and he was given an extra dose by NICU so the doctors made us use formula from him being 2 days old to ensure he was taking milk. So there were other factors that disrupted our breastfeeding and not just the tongue tie. Hopefully this time we will have less disruptions and will be able to exclusively breastfeed 🤞

aNewYorkerInLondon · 08/01/2022 21:04

@Yellowbelly12, fingers crossed for us on that!

In that situation, if they know ahead of time that you wish to exclusively breastfeed, could they not let you pump? (Sorry if that is a stupid question. FTM here!) I really want to avoid formula if we can.

TashieWoo · 08/01/2022 22:27

@Yellowbelly12 glad you got your baby’s tongue tie was resolved successfully, I think going private is a good idea and would probably do the same, although you’d think the NHS would be onto that.

Welcome @Kittycaz 😊 it’s so lovely feeling the baby move, I’ve only felt proper movements for the last 10ish days but she’s not reached my ribs yet.

Yellowbelly12 · 09/01/2022 08:39

@aNewYorkerInLondon a midwife was going to help me pump in hospital but then we were put on the feeding regime so that didn’t happen. I had a feeding coordinator visit me at home to help with positioning which was really good and I also went to a local support group - this was a few months before Covid! I did buy a pump to use at home and it was the most soul destroying thing as only a few drops came and it made me think I wasn’t able to feed at all - post birth hormones are a killer! It’s another case of mixed messages though as you may also be told not to pump for the first six weeks so you don’t cause nipple confusion. I was able to combination feed for about three months though so we didn’t have that problem at least. When we did move to formula I used Kendamil as it’s British made from full fat milk and has no palm oil etc.

@TashieWoo if this baby has tongue tie I will push for the hospital to sort it before we leave. Last time i didn’t really understand what it was as they just said he had it as a matter fact and I had no idea how it would impact on us. It used to be that you could self refer to the hospital to fix the tongue tie but now you have to go through the GP and mine was just not helpful telling me that ‘breastfeeding is painful’. We just wanted it sorted so paid and it was all done in a couple of days!

fattycatty82 · 09/01/2022 08:40

Welcome @Kittycaz I'm loving feeling the taps and little kicks too! Definitely feel a connection to baby now, like she is secretly communicating with me! I sometimes wonder if she can feel when I put my hands on my belly too especially if my hands are cold/warm

We're driving down to see an old uni friend of mine this morning who has not long had a baby, she's giving me lots of bits and bobs which is so kind of her. I've been really surprised by how many people have wanted to give us things as wasn't expecting it

Actually managed a fairly decent nights sleep last night with only one nightmare!

aNewYorkerInLondon · 09/01/2022 09:20

Thanks so much @Yellowbelly12! I'm trying to gather as much info as possible and you've been so helpful!!

Kittycaz · 09/01/2022 09:26

@fattycatty82 I know the feeling I feel like I'm drowning in things for our little one allready. He even got Christmas presents lol.
It's truly amazing feeling him it's mainly taps, punches and kicks so far. Hubby has felt quite a few of them too. I read my little one stories and talk to him allot (looking crazy in process lol)
Am glad you had a good night sleep pregnancy nightmares are just so horrible.

SerendipitySunshine · 09/01/2022 16:50

@aNewYorkerInLondon

Thanks so much *@Yellowbelly12*! I'm trying to gather as much info as possible and you've been so helpful!!
Our DD had a tongue tie too. It's quite common. We got it snipped privately too as the NHS waiting list was 12 weeks and privately it could be done the same day. I wish the NHS would offer it to more people. It is such a simple procedure and makes breastfeeding rates so much higher. We were able to EBF afterwards and I'll definitely get it done again if this baby has a TT.
Bubbasmama2017 · 09/01/2022 17:59

My daughter had a tongue tie but it was minimal so they snipped it when I was readmitted to hospital a few days after giving birth. I don't think she even really noticed what had happened she was so tiny! Best to get them checked if you're worried when they're born or seem to be struggling with breast feeding.

aNewYorkerInLondon · 10/01/2022 11:07

Good morning, ladies! Happy Monday!

Having a really hard time caring about my job this morning. 😒

How's everyone else feeling?

robyna · 10/01/2022 11:41

@aNewYorkerInLondon same, already fed up! Was considering taking early maternity leave this morning cause I didn't want to get out of bed 😂

fattycatty82 · 10/01/2022 11:47

I'd be ok if I could just manage a full nights sleep!!
