How’s everyone doing? Does anyone have any advice on waking during the night? My little one is going through a fussy phase and feel like I’ve spent the whole day trying to get him to settle. Finally slept around 11ish. Seems nuts to wake him for a feed, not sure what’s best. He’s gaining weight well - 1kg in two weeks since discharge. Xxx

jbx10 · 16/03/2021 04:22

@Muriel84 me and Myla are doing well thank you! Seem to be setting in nicely now and getting into more of a routine now. I'm not sure what the textbook answer would be on waking him up, but I certainly wouldn't wake him 😂 if he's been fussing throughout the day but eaten, I would leave him to sleep. I'm sure he will let you know he's hungry when he wakes up. Take the rest!! Plus if he's gaining healthy weight pushing his feed back an hour or two won't harm.

I'm trying to get Myla to sleep in her cot for longer, if she's sleeping in my arms she can sleep for 3hrs in her cot it's 1hr30mins max!! Xx

wannabe123 · 16/03/2021 09:39

@Muriel84 as long as they're putting on weight fine I don't think you need to worry about waking them

pampero · 16/03/2021 10:25

@jbx10 we are having similar cot issues. She was fine for first couple of weeks but won't entertain it at the moment for any length of time, on us though she'll go for ages, often in the most uncomfortable looking of positions! Not sure how to persuade her the cot is just as good!

@Muriel84 not sure what to suggest on the waking front in earlier days. Now ours is 5 weeks we wait for her to wake as she was putting on weight ok....she too has been fussy these last few days so once she's asleep I dare not wake her!

Muriel84 · 16/03/2021 11:59

@jbx10 @wannabe123 thank you I’ll stop waking him. It’s so hard cos he was very underweight. Trying to decrease formula and increase breast feeding. We we’re having weekly weights but community midwife has discharged us now cos he’s way over his birth weight. God knows what’s going on with the health visitors where I live. They’ve not been doing visits since last March.

@pampero my LO is becoming increasingly intolerant of being anywhere other than on me, either on the boob or asleep with his head just under it. He does like the bath tho!

The sleep deprivation is unreal... it’s really hard to “nap when baby naps” when baby only naps on you or when you’re walking... x x x

Muriel84 · 16/03/2021 12:01

@jbx10 glad you’re both doing well. Mine boy is just a day older than Myla I think. We don’t have any sort of routine tho I am thankful he does seem sleep for a chunk in the night. X x x

jbx10 · 16/03/2021 12:26

@Muriel84 glad your doing well too! Aww your little one 3 weeks old today then? Hope your settled in your new home too. I know when people say nap when baby naps I think I wish!! She's either on me, or I have a house to tidy up or tea to cook 😂🙈 I'm trying to build confidence going out and about with her more now I was so worried of her just screaming when taking her for walks or to the shops but she has been ok! I have had 1 health visit last week and she's coming again Thursday to weigh her xxx

LBoz39 · 16/03/2021 14:05

Had my baby girl Isla Grace at 6.49am on 12th March.
I was induced at 10am on 11th, went into labour at 5pm the same day and she arrived the next.
Absolutely horrific birth, begged and begged for an epidural as both my other children were very long labours and had a feeling this one would be too, epidural was in my birth plan but I was totally ignored after being reassured leading up to the birth it would be available if I needed it.
One midwife actually said to me epidurals was like swearing to her😔
She got stuck in the end and ended up with 4 people trying to help me get her out whilst they kept getting me to move around the bed.
I'm still feeling very spaced out and completely let down but so happy she's here

pampero · 16/03/2021 16:12

@Lboz39 congratulations! Delivery sounds frustrating but glad little one arrived well.

@Muriel84 I agree on thr nap when they nap, not a chance for me in the day at the moment!

I was lucky in that hubby had 5 weeks off work, tmrw is the first day just me so @jbx10 ill be on that confidence building journey myself, fingers crossed she's well behaved on day one 😊

BL89 · 16/03/2021 16:54

It's so reassuring that you guys seem to have similiar experiences - it can be such a lonely experience.

@Muriel84 how would you go about increasing breastfeeding and decreasing formula? Little Mila lost weight so was told to give her formula after every breastfeed, not sure she'd be satisfied or settled without the formula now and I can't bear for her to be hungry.

@LBoz39 well if she doesn't like epidurals then she shouldn't get one herself - awful for them to ignore your wishes. I can't cope with pushy midwives, at a time when you're most vulnerable it's the last thing you need. Really glad baby is here safe and sound xx

Muriel84 · 16/03/2021 18:07

I agree it’s so nice to share our experiences, I was missing our chats on this board.

@jbx10 he’s three weeks and two days. I’m so impressed you’re doing cleaning and cooking! I literally feel chained to him. He’s been an absolute monster today as well, some real inconsolable screaming sessions. The only thing that stops him
Is a walk in the sling or feeding and now my right nipple is cracked. 😭

@LBoz39 congratulations - beautiful name. So sorry you had that experience that’s awful you were denied pain relief.

@BL89 feeding has been so tough. My boy was 11 days late but very underweight because of problems with the placenta. I lost over 2 litres of blood and had v traumatic delivery. He was starving but I couldn’t feed him. Awful first night on post nates. So he was formula fed initially and we have been topping up with formula since. He’s put on a lot of weight tho so now cutting down the formula and putting him on the breast as much as possible to increase supply. Was also expressing lots too but just don’t have the time at the moment as he’s feeding so often. Keeping an eye on nappies and getting him weighed regularly to make sure he’s getting enough. It is so so hard tho as you just don’t know what they’re taking like you do with the bottle. X x x

jbx10 · 16/03/2021 19:02

@Muriel84 it's really not that much cooking and cleaning trust me 😂 when I say cooking it's been a lot of ready or pre-prepped meals!! Cooked properly for the first time tonight and was v basic! I've been really lucky that my OH has just gone back to work half days and my mum comes round on an afternoon and the support has just been invaluable. I found the first 2 weeks unbelievably overwhelming!!

I was also missing this thread ❤️ so nice to have other ladies in same boat to turn to for advice!

@LBoz39 sorry to hear about your birth experience. Really not fair for the MWs to project their personal view on epidurals onto you!! Glad your LO is here safe & sound though wish you a speedy recovery!

017HF · 21/03/2021 17:30

How are you guys all doing? Haven’t really had a chance to come on here for a nosey for the past few weeks!

Does anyone else have a contact napper and have any tips on how to get them to not open their eyes the moment they touch their crib/cot/any other surface that isn’t my body? I know it’s normal for babies to need the security and waken up the second they no longer you it but it’s exhausting! Otherwise I think I have it pretty good - apart from not having a moment to myself but on the flip side I have a very cute little baby!

pampero · 21/03/2021 19:11

@017hf I have one of those napper too, I also haven't quite figured out how to solve it! These last few days I'm just trying to persist little by little sometimes with more success than others. So I'm also open all ears if anyone has any great suggestions 😁 other than that and the odd meltdown things seem to be going ok I think x

LBoz39 · 21/03/2021 19:36

Mine is the same, I'll feed her then she'll fall asleep on me then as soon as I put her down she wakes, thinks it's called the 4th trimester 😂
Ended up buying a ewan sheep that mimics the sound of the womb, and a few other white noises. It didn't work at first but seems to be helping loads now, she goes into a sleepy stare then drifts back off

Stef92 · 21/03/2021 22:15

We are just playing an 8hr YouTube clip every night of a tumble dryer - it's pot luck whether he sleeps though unless it's in our arms

017HF · 22/03/2021 06:47

@pampero @LBoz39 sometimes if I lay him down on my bed he’ll stay asleep, not sure if it’s because he can smell me and the mattress is a bit warmer, or if I lay him down and sort of lie over him then slowly ease off and then other times it seems like no matter what I do as soon as I put him down he’s wide awake - it’s only daytime though that’s the problem so I’m pretty fortunate!

@Stef92 white noise is now just the background music to my life!! Not sure if it makes a difference but won’t dare turn it off!

jbx10 · 22/03/2021 11:41

My LO has just started to sleep when I put her in her cot. We tilted the cot at an angle after realising she doesn't like laying flat. I'm EBF and I used to try burp her after every feed which made her agitated so now I just put her straight down after a feed and she stays fast asleep. She has also started to self soothe if she stirs! We have a fan on in our room not directed toward her but she likes the noise! An also we have dimmed red lighting. Seems to be working although her sleeps are shorter when she's in her cot wakes every 90mins but more like 2hrs-2.5hrs if she's on me or my OH xxxx

BL89 · 30/03/2021 15:23

How's everyone doing? Really struggling to get DD to sleep anywhere but on us - it's so exhausting 🥺

She's fairly fussy while feeding and gets herself really overtired - I'm secretly hating everyone who tells me there newborn just slept all the time 😬

017HF · 30/03/2021 15:42

@BL89 hey - my son was the same but I’ve just been persevering and he’ll now go for a short nap in his crib but I have to rock him over to sleep then let him sleep on me a bit longer before I put him down. I have white noise on the whole time he’s asleep too and I think that helps. I’m fortunate in that for some reason he sleeps great at night and in his own crib so that makes the days a bit more bearable. I also try not to let him stay awake any longer than 45mins-1hour as that is their max awake time when they’re still so young, so as soon as I get to 45 mins after he woke up last I walk about with him and can tel he’s sleepy as he just lies on my shoulder and doesn’t fight, that really made a difference too as he’ll usually nod off quite quickly without a tantrum - thought I had it sussed then there was yesterday and he just wouldn’t nap at all for more than 20 mins at all al day, even in the Carrier which normally he sleeps for ages in! They’re still so tiny and still learning but the broken/lack of sleep makes things much tougher x

BL89 · 31/03/2021 01:18

@017HF I know what you mean, I thought I had my LO sussed last weekend but she's changed so much so quickly. I really feel for her as the transition from being in the womb where it's warm with noises she's used to and never being hungry must be so harsh. We're getting close to 6 weeks now so really looking forward to her social smiley phase 😊

Muriel84 · 01/04/2021 05:12

Hi everyone! My son is 5 weeks 4 days today. He’s been a poor day napper from the start... he’ll go hours without napping. He will sleep for ages in the sling but doesn’t like the pram for long periods. Sleeps well in a crib for the first part of the night from 11ish-3ish. I struggle to get him back down after we feed tho. He gets bad stomach ache which makes him grimace, cry out and tense up ever ten mins or so. Nothing seems to help it. He’s not good at burping and rarely vomits so I think it’s trapped wind.

I am absolutely loving the smiles. I don’t think there’s anything better than when he makes eye contact and breaks out into this beautiful big grin...

Hope you’re all keeping well! These first weeks have been super tough. X x x

babydust2412 · 01/04/2021 07:47

@Muriel84 my son struggled with trapped wind really badly during his first weeks too. We used infacol and it worked a treat for him, also switched him to the mam bottles from tommee Tippee and he's loving them xx

Char41zam · 01/04/2021 09:04

I had to change to mam bottle as well as the Tommee tippee ones were awful, I had her on detinox and would put it in her milk but it was actually the bottle that caused the trapped wind even though they are supposed to be anti colic! She had been sleeping terrible during the night but that seems to be settling too, I have been like a zombie for weeks but getting a bit more sleep now thank goodness x

jbx10 · 01/04/2021 09:31

@Muriel84 my baby also going through a phase of tummy ache / struggling with wind or trying to have a poo. Seems to wake her up the she struggles for a while and not much can calm her until she's passed wind. I read they go through a development leap between week 5-6. It's also like she wants to suckle but will not take a dummy!!
Does any one have any tips to try get her to take a dummy? Otherwise she just comforts on me xx
