OK it's a boy. DH is Irish, I am English but half-Indian. Here is the shortlist:

Irish:
Killian
Malachi
Taigh (not sure of spelling; pron is first syllable of tiger)
Dara

Other (i.e. mine):
Inigo
Noah
Emmanuel
Inyaki
Rafael
Raju
Damien (DH's)

He hates mine, I don't like his enough to name my son any of them. Killian is probably the frontrunner although I have huge issues calling my son anything that includes the word 'kill' (and rhymes with Gillian )

Any comments/suggestions gratefully received

I'm currently rooting for Rafael for mine Skid. DH doesn't know yet. He works with someone called Rafael and mentioned him on Friday and a little lightbulb went off in my head. Otherwise DH wants Willie.

Lauriefairycake · 29/10/2007 15:44

Is Raju pronounced rajew?

Cos if so I like it.

I'm sorry but I hate the rest (like Noah), particularly rafael - isnt that a ninja turtle thing?

goingfor3 · 29/10/2007 15:44

I'm not keen on any of the Irish names at all. Rafael or Damien are my favs from the lists. If you call a child Ragu it will be constantley reminded of pasta sauce!

DirtyGertiefromnumber30 · 29/10/2007 15:46

i like Noah.

My cousin is Dara and i do like it, however, in this country is would get pronounced to rhyme with Tara (which would be all wrong)

I toyed with the name Malachi when i was pregnant (i am irish too) but agreed that he would have a lifetime of 'how do you pronouce that?'

Not keen on the rest of them im afraid

skidaddle · 29/10/2007 15:48

Laurie and goingfor3 - Raju is Indian and is pronounced Rajew (comes from Rajan) - don't think it would be confused with ragu sauce would it?

blackcatwizzkas - I'll fight you for Rafael then!!

OP posts:
goingfor3 · 29/10/2007 15:50

As it's written Ragu he will have to correct people quite often. Rajan is a great name!

skidaddle · 29/10/2007 15:51

but it's written Raju goingfor3 - would that still be confusing (doesn't matter anyway DH hates it ).....

dirtygertie - malachi is my fave irish name - but I think it sounds like the boy who is always in trouble, "MalachEEE, come here right NOW!" kind of thing

OP posts:
EffiePerine · 29/10/2007 15:53

Isn't Dara spelt Daire? I rather like it.

skidaddle · 29/10/2007 15:54

effie - there is another spelling, not sure what it is though - I thought it was something like Daraigh?

OP posts:
claraq · 29/10/2007 15:54

Skid - aaagh names! We're stuck on girls names but that's another story ;)
I really like Inigo - that's very different but not too poncey. The only Inigo I can think of is Inigo Jones - was he a garden designer or something?
Of the Irish ones I like Malachi best - could be shortened to Mal, which is nice.
Killian is ok but would almost certainly get called Kill or Killer or something at school!!!

EffiePerine · 29/10/2007 15:54

I would have pronounced it malachEYE but is that biblical rather than irish IYSWIM?

nailpolish · 29/10/2007 15:55

i know a Dara
is spelt Daire though

PuppyDogEyes · 29/10/2007 15:55

in order of preference

noah
rafael
rajan (rather than raju - you could nickname him that at home)
malachi

thats my vote!

EffiePerine · 29/10/2007 15:56

either by the looks of things

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dara

nice meaning

EffiePerine · 29/10/2007 15:56

Malachi was a minor prophet I think?

skidaddle · 29/10/2007 15:57

hi claraq!

Inigo Jones was a British architect in the 20s I think. I really loved it until I read a magazine article taking the mick out of posh parents and their pretend children were called Inigo and Jemima!

effie - it is an old biblical name - I think it's pronounced MalachEE in Ireland but I've heard it used for children of African origin pronounced the way you say...

EffiePerine · 29/10/2007 15:57

he was indeed

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malachi

riotgrrl · 29/10/2007 15:57

I really like lots of these... Inigo, Rafael, Malachi and Noah. Lovely!

nailpolish · 29/10/2007 15:57

oh i didnt mean Daire is the correct way
i jsut meant this particular boy i know has his name spelt Daire

SqueakyBroomstickBrushes · 29/10/2007 15:58

Go for Killian but spell it the celtic way 'Cillian', that way you don't have the word 'kill' in your son's name

ImBarryScott · 29/10/2007 15:59

The "Dara" I know spells his name "Daragh"
Love Noah and Malachi

skidaddle · 29/10/2007 15:59

ooh that is a lovely meaning for Dara/Daire effie!

I'm so fickle - every time someone says they like a certain name best that suddenly becomes my favourite - why can't you all say the same thing?!

OP posts:
EffiePerine · 29/10/2007 15:59

here as Kilian

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Killian

nailpolish · 29/10/2007 15:59

Cian is nice
so is Keir and Keiran

i think Dara is my favourite from your list though

the Dara i know is a sweetheart
