OK it's a boy. DH is Irish, I am English but half-Indian. Here is the shortlist:

Irish:
Killian
Malachi
Taigh (not sure of spelling; pron is first syllable of tiger)
Dara

Other (i.e. mine):
Inigo
Noah
Emmanuel
Inyaki
Rafael
Raju
Damien (DH's)

He hates mine, I don't like his enough to name my son any of them. Killian is probably the frontrunner although I have huge issues calling my son anything that includes the word 'kill' (and rhymes with Gillian )

Any comments/suggestions gratefully received

lol skiddale - just read whole thread and loving the discussion, I wish my dh was as adventurous as yours when it comes to names, he is adamant that it should be tradional-ish although we adore Noah so will fight you for that one! (my secret fav is Casper but dh has veto'd it and said he'll buy me a cat I can call casper as its a pets name )

can't make any suggestions from your list - I'm dyslexic and I'm sorry but I have issues with peoples names all the time, if its not said like it sounds then I'm lost and probably offend a lot of people, I'm still not sure how you pronounce half the names on your list!

skidaddle · 30/10/2007 16:18

I like Casper too insy and Noah is lovely - you can have it though - I know DH will never go for it

Maybe I should turn this into a name auction - have already given Rafael to blackcatwizzskas

Anyone for Mowgli?
Reef?
Don't all shout at once

I love Iñaki and Iñigo, but then I'm Spanish and couldn't live with spelling them without the squiggle over the 'n'. I'm struggling to find a Spanish boy's name that would work in English at the moment. I'd love to be able to use Iñaki (which is actually the Basque equivalent of Ignacio).

skidaddle · 30/10/2007 16:44

Hi vacaloca - where did you find a tilde or do you have a Spanish keyboard? I would definitely spell Inyaki the right way if I called my son that - just hard when I'm typing and have no tilde.

I love the name Pachi which is gallego I think - do you like that? If you are Spanish I think any easily pronounceable Spanish name is fine in this country - Pablo, Gustavo, Noe...

I also love the Mexican name Quetzalcoatl but that is a it of a mouthful for a Spanish speaker, let alone an English speaker!

You need to press ALT + 0241 on your number pad. I have to use tildes and accents all the time so know them by heart. But if you spell it like that, most people throughout his life won't be able to write his name properly, wouldn't be able to use it as an email address, etc. etc. I think Pachi is Basque too and written Patxi probably. Pablo has been on the cards for a while now but we're not completely convinced. 5 more months to go so I hope we can come up with something. We were quite relieved the last two were girls as they're a lot easier, but even this time we're struggling to find another girl's name we like!

CaptainDippy · 30/10/2007 21:18

Inigo - all the way!!

skidaddle · 31/10/2007 12:10

so it's Iñigo in Spain vacaloca - pronounced Inyigo? I think there is also an English version Inigo (e.g. Inigo Jones) or is that just a bastardisation (love that word!)?

OP posts:
kittylouise · 31/10/2007 16:52

lol at bastardisation - agree is a great word (slipping in swearing in the most refined conversations!)

GreenGlassGoblin · 31/10/2007 17:00

Inigo, I love it. See The Princess Bride (great film) - one of the characters in that!

mixedmama · 01/11/2007 13:46

Sorry no use Skid...but just made me laugh to see Zahra as a boys name as this is my name (well i have a corrupted version) and never heard a boy.

Anyway, if you dont mind Killian could you both compromise on spelling it Cillian????

By the way I love Rafael.

claireybang · 01/11/2007 14:37

Sorry can't help-we can't even choose our own baby's name!
I keep asking dd (17 months)what the baby is called and she mostly says Douggie, which I think is actually quite cute for a little boy but not for when he gets older and I don't like Douglas-any other suggestions of what Douggie could be short for?

The other day she said something which sounded like Nayari when i asked, so that is a possible contender for girls names (we are getting desperate and will consider anything she offers!). I just need to find out if it means anything...

Other than that dh has offered up Arielle which is ok but I don't love it (and makes me think of little mermaid) and that is about as far as we've got.

So, if Skidaddle doesn't mind me hi-jacking her thread, please suggest some names for us! We like quite unusual names, but not ones that are too far out or celebrity-esque.

nailpolish · 01/11/2007 14:44

my FIL is called Dugald and he gets Dougie for short

nailpolish · 01/11/2007 14:45

pronounced Doo-gald

nailpolish · 01/11/2007 14:45

or Doo-guld to be specific

skidaddle · 02/11/2007 09:25

lol claireybang - can't believe you are relying on your 17month old to name your baby!!

Quite like Nayari too. I wanted to call this ds Nkondo who was a little boy I used to play with when I lived in Tanzania but DH was having none of it - are you thinking of African-y names or just anything?

MM - Zahra is one of my names too!! (I have four )

kimisparkles · 02/11/2007 09:48

Hoah, that is a lovely name

kimisparkles · 02/11/2007 09:49

NOAH even

skidaddle · 02/11/2007 09:50

I was wondering kimisparkles

ninedragons · 02/11/2007 10:23

Dougal is very distinguished and could definitely be shortened to Douggie.

skidaddle · 02/11/2007 13:41

dougal just reminds me of the magic roundabout ninedragons

A friend of mine called her son Ruari (pronounced Rory) which I thought was great. Could also try Rian (Ryan) which means king in Irish

From your list I'd go with Noah or Mal.

toomanyballs · 02/11/2007 13:56

I called mine Zachary and love it but he was been called Zachy Wacky (woo waa for added effect!!)for a while and now we just call him Wacky

skidaddle · 02/11/2007 14:00

toomanyballs - I love the name Rory but my brother is called that and the look of smug satisfaction on his face when we tell him we have named our son after him is too much to bear!!

I also love Zachary but DH doesn't like it - love the Zacky wacky woo waa too - he'll love that when he's 14... (assuming he's not...!)

Not keen on Ryan and although Rian is not Ryan that's probably what people would call him

toomanyballs · 02/11/2007 14:12

He'll be 2 on tuesday and wheres my baby gone?

skidaddle · 02/11/2007 14:18

sounds like it's time for another one...
