OK it's a boy. DH is Irish, I am English but half-Indian. Here is the shortlist:

Irish:
Killian
Malachi
Taigh (not sure of spelling; pron is first syllable of tiger)
Dara

Other (i.e. mine):
Inigo
Noah
Emmanuel
Inyaki
Rafael
Raju
Damien (DH's)

He hates mine, I don't like his enough to name my son any of them. Killian is probably the frontrunner although I have huge issues calling my son anything that includes the word 'kill' (and rhymes with Gillian )

Any comments/suggestions gratefully received

nailpolish - those are all nice but DH has an uncle/cousin or some other male relative called all the more common Irish names.

he doesn;t like the Cillian spelling, squeaky - thinks it sounds liek we are calling our son after that actor Cillian Murphy

arent we allowed to choose names any more without someone thnking up someone famous with that name , and being accused of "naming after" that famous person???

if you are famous do you then own your name? grrrrrrrr ffs

well i like Dara. or Daire. oh but then arent you naming your son after Dara o'Hanlon, that rib-ticking comic?

sorry, rant over.

i ahve been accused of naming both my girls after famous people. it just so happens they have the same name...!

skidaddle · 29/10/2007 16:07

totaly agree nailpolish, especially as there are so many famous people with so many names it's hard not to give your child the same as somebody famous. However, don't think this will change DH's mind...

phew

sorry for rant

Noah is nice

dd2 has a little friend called Zion which i think is very cool.

skidaddle · 29/10/2007 16:11

ooh nailpolish I like Zion - do you know any more about it - origin etc? I REALLY like it - have you solved our problem? If so I love you (and completely forgive you rant!!!)

OP posts:
skidaddle · 29/10/2007 16:13

although actually does it come from zionism?

OP posts:
harpsicorpsecarrier · 29/10/2007 16:14

Raphael but I would spell it like that

nailpolish · 29/10/2007 16:15

oh go for Zion

dds little friend is mixed race - his mum looks indian although Zion has darker skin than his mum and afro-ish hair. ive never met his dad.

i dont know where his name comes from

its nice though isnt it?!

nailpolish · 29/10/2007 16:16

she also has a little friend called Aric which i also like!

nailpolish · 29/10/2007 16:16

isnt Zion a place in Israel?

goingfor3 · 29/10/2007 16:18

Raju and Ragu won't get mixed up, I'm just very tired!!!

skidaddle · 29/10/2007 16:20

yeah I think Zion refers to Israel as a holy land... hmm don't think my atheist DH will go for that one..

Quite like Aric too - what are your dd's other friends' names?!

OP posts:
nailpolish · 29/10/2007 16:21

instead of

"Taigh (not sure of spelling; pron is first syllable of tiger)"

why not just go for Tiger

skidaddle · 29/10/2007 16:21

lol at tiger, dd would love that, she thinks she is a tiger

OP posts:
nailpolish · 29/10/2007 16:23

the nursery dd2 goes too is full of names from all corners of the world
there is a Raphael, an Emmerson, Diego, Dimitri, Zion, Aric, Rad, and a Saladin. those are the boys i can remember

i quite like Rad. he is Polish.

nailpolish · 29/10/2007 16:23

Tiger is a great name. seriously.

nailpolish · 29/10/2007 16:25

oh and a Ronan

kittylouise · 29/10/2007 16:27

Of your lists I like Malachi, Noah and Emmanuel - all of those would be a lovely name for a boy IMO.

But I LOVE LOVE LOVE the name Inigo and if I had a baby boy on the way would love to call him that. It's a great name.

skidaddle · 29/10/2007 16:28

that sounds like a great nursery - at dd's nursery there are 3 Josephs, 2 Harrys and 3 Bens!! Poor things - only 2 or 3 but already being called Joseph P, Joseph N and Joseph H

Do quite like Tiger!! I can imagine my FIL's face when we present him with his first grandson Tiger... (he suggested Derek)

lol @ derek

skidaddle · 29/10/2007 16:29

Ahh thank you kittylouise - it is nice, isn't it? Apparently it's really popular in Spain. Just worry that it is associated with being mega mega posh (which I'm not at all)..

Like Noah the best out them all

I believe the correct spelling is Tighe (pronounced Ty or Tie) friends DS is called it

nailpolish · 29/10/2007 16:31

my favourite Irish name is Seamus

skidaddle · 29/10/2007 16:33

Hope I didn;t offend any Bens Josephs or Harrys btw - they are all nice names - just feel sorry for them being in such a tiny nursery and having the same name as two other little boys...

not too keen on Seamus

Tighe - that's it - thank you - thought you pronounced the 'g' as well though?

Dalon is a minor Irish name.
