@AliceinBunniland nothing has been published yet the research is still being examined but most midwives will be aware of it.

What they are not sure if its anecdotal as more tongue ties being identified (a midwife used to usually severe it without a second thought) or because there is a bigger focus on BF compared to bottle feeding its being picked up more. One of the researches suggests folic acid but still no publication yet.

My son had a very tight tt (90%) which was snipped at 5 days but reattached at 60% at 4.5 months so had an operation at 8 months to rectify as it effected his weight gain and weaning.

Nobody really warns you the issues that tt can cause to BF so worth doing some research so your aware of it. Only a specialist can spot a posterior tt though!

AliceinBunniland · 02/01/2021 09:18

@Scottishskifun I wasn't even aware of tongue ties. I just had to look it up. I was fairly well informed (I thought) in my first pregnancy but wasn't aware of that. I rhink I just took pregnancare or similar pregnancy multivitamins throughout.

I probably don't need to be on high dose folic acid so for now I think I'll just take pregnancare (which I know has folic acid in it anyway) and find out how much vitamin d I need, as I have been low on vitamin d for a while.

Scottishskifun · 02/01/2021 09:37

@AliceinBunniland they are rarely discussed as they make BF difficult if tight (cause latch issues, nipple damage, milk supply issues due to ineffective transfer etc).
Go onto any breastfeeding forum or support group and any post about latch issues etc they will always say have you checked for tongue ties.

They don't mention it in pregnancy or even BF classes as there is the aim of increasing BF and its thought that it will put mothers off.
But if you know what to look for at birth you can get a referral to the infant feeding team straight away (they don't tend to cut before 5 days) it's a quick and painless procedure when they are little gets more complicated after 5/6 months. Or can go private if a long wait time.

If I'd of known the wait times for the reattachment I would have gone private straight away as my son then needed a general.

Some babies manage to feed perfectly fine with them it just depends on the tightness and the baby and also if it causes pain when feeding other than the initial latch on.

Hi guys and Happy New Year!

I am pregnant with my first - EDD of 29th so thought I really ought to reach out to fellow expectant mum's as feel quite isolated with covid-19.

Had an 8 week early scan for piece of mind and also so OH could go along in case things get stricter by the time of the 12 week scan in 2 weeks.

How was everyone's experience so far of the 12 week scan and maternity services? Aware the experience and current rules varies quite a lot!

Lindz8634 · 02/01/2021 10:26

Hi Everyone, I’m new to the group Smile I’m due July 16th, it’s been 10 years since my last baby so I feel like everything’s new starting all over again. I was looking for a bounty chat but it doesn’t seem to exist anymore, is there a Facebook group I could join? Thanks

strawberrycherryblossom · 02/01/2021 10:31

@Beansprout2021 this is my second baby and partners are allowed here but I went to my dating scan on my own as we didn't have any childcare. I saw other women on their own too so I wasn't the only one. I suppose it might have been different if I had received bad news but it was absolutely fine. All staff were really nice and chatty so I didn't feel strange on my own. I just got lots of pictures.

I would have done my booking appointment and all midwife appointments on my own anyway so no change there!

Luckyelephant1 · 02/01/2021 11:22

@Beansprout2021 my booking appointment was on the phone. Husband was allowed in for less than 2 minutes for the 12 week NHS scan so I'm glad we had an earlier private scan which felt more special. The NHS stuff all feels a bit conveyor belt/perfunctory but I guess that's to be expected with the sheer volume of patients they need to deal with. The staff were lovely at the scan though.

I also noticed quite a few errors in my notes so make sure you read through everything yourself and raise any errors. For example the midwife who did my booking appointment noted my weight totally wrong and wrote that I have a family history of diabetes when I don't! No idea what happened there. So every note that's written now I'm going to look through with a fine tooth comb!

Scottishskifun · 02/01/2021 16:41

Hi ladies
Afraid I have had a MMC was due to be 14 weeks but baby stopped growing at 10 weeks. Confirmed with a scan today as I was in a bit of pain so went to the unit.

I'm due for surgery next week. I wish you all the best for your pregnancies and when your babies arrive.

They are hard work and nothing really prepares you for it but they are definitely worth it.

Just be kind to yourselves take each hour with your babies as it goes and always reach out for support. Fourth trimester groups are brilliant for help.

AliceinBunniland · 02/01/2021 16:56

@Scottishskifun I'm so sorry to read your update. You have been such a support on this thread. I have said before, you have always been so kind in your replies when I have posted about my own concerns, even today when you must have had other things on your mind.

We lost our first baby at 40 weeks and it was a very dark time. We will always miss our little girl but time has helped to heal the hurt.

I hope you have support in real life and that you get through this tough time. If you are hoping for another baby then I hope you have your rainbow baby soon 🌈 💗

Runnergirl1 · 02/01/2021 17:12

@Scottishskifun so sorry to hear this. Sending you lots of love your way xx

Scottishskifun · 02/01/2021 17:25

@AliceinBunniland thanks and your one remarkable woman and a fantastic mum I wish you all the best for the rest of your pregnancy with your second and you get to hold your happy healthy crying 2nd born when fully cooked and ready to welcome the world.

It hurts like hell and I can rationalise it all I like but it doesn't take it away especially when I thought I was past the worst risk point. Should have known better though knowing the number of friends who have had similar. It's probably why I never join Facebook groups or tell anyone bar parents.

I struggle with pregnancy and as much as I hate it doesn't mean a baby is any less loved or wanted. We will get there when the time is right for now I will get my skis out in a few weeks hopefully and have some mountain reset time (I live in a local authority with 2 ski centres)

AliceinBunniland · 02/01/2021 17:49

Thank you @Scottishskifun for your kind words as always. Enjoy the skiing and if you ever find yourself wanting to chat please PM me if you feel like it xx

strawberrycherryblossom · 02/01/2021 18:43

I'm so sorry @Scottishskifun. I lost my last one at 5 weeks, I can't imagine how it is for you at 14 weeks. Look after yourself and I hope in time you get your rainbow.

Thank you ladies it is what it is and unchangeable regardless of hope and wishes. I was on my own when told as my DH was at home looking after our son. Even with a mask on I could see the look in the midwifes face as the sonographer took measurements and then called a consultant.

But I have the best heart remedy ever of a toddler who never gives a crap and my mum is also travelling from England to help out whilst I have surgery.

@AliceinBunniland thank you for your support and I will also stay about on mumsnet honestly I had every feeding issue known, had a neonatal baby, became a milk donor for neonatal units and helped friends out with feeding.
Anything I can help please shout when you need Smile I'm always happy to help!

jewelsx · 02/01/2021 22:24

Has anyone used the Tommie tippee bottle maker? For feeds? Is it worth buying?

AliceinBunniland · 03/01/2021 08:23

Scottishskifun 💗

strawberrycherryblossom · 03/01/2021 08:48

@jewelsx they aren't recommended by the NHS & I have no personal experience as DC1 was ebf but I do have friends who have them and think they are worth their weight in gold.

I think it is a personal decision but probably partly depends on what your plans are for feeding. If you want to exclusively bottle feed, you might feel they are worth it to make your life easier. From what I've heard the key is being really strict on keeping them clean. I would also check the hot shot is hot enough to kill any bacteria in the milk as there is some speculation that it isn't.

On the flip side, if you want to combi feed you might think the cleaning/maintenance is a lot of effort for the small amount of bottles you will need it to make.

Personally I wouldn't risk it but I've also never had to make bottles and probably don't appreciate how much easier the prep machine makes it, especially at night.

@Scottishskifun so sorry to hear your sad news sending lots of love Flowers

WarrickDavisAsPlates · 03/01/2021 17:50

@scottishskifun so sorry to hear your sad news, I have been where you are before and know how devastating it is. I hope you manage to relax and that you have plenty of real life support to get you through.

WarrickDavisAsPlates · 03/01/2021 17:53

Posting in a separate post as it's a change of tone.

Is anyone else still feeling really sick?

I've just heard my daughters schools aren't going back next week so she will be at home when I have my scan on Friday. I'm terrified of getting bad news and then having to come home and be OK for the kids, I could cope with ds as he's 1 and will just carry on but she's 8 and will know somethings wrong.

Sweetpea12 · 03/01/2021 18:40

@WarrickDavisAsPlates I’m 12 weeks tomorrow and still feeling really sick I got anti sickness tablets from the doctor but not many so taking them when really needed but they do work. I also have a scan on Friday and a nervous wreck. All was ok when I was scanned at 9 weeks 6. Baby was measuring 10 weeks and 4 but I don’t think the worry goes away

stickytoffeepud1991 · 03/01/2021 21:03
